Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
2348: Bira was born the year the Federation ceded the Davon System to the Cardassian Union, in the mining outpost on Davonia. Her parents, Bajoran Resistance Fighters, had been sentenced to the mining outpost as slave labor and met during their captivity. Hidden by her parents successfully until age 4, she was discovered and given over to the hands of the commander. Taken by her striking looks, the Cardassian kept her as a pet and delighted in making her choose who would die and who would live for any given offense. Her father was executed when she was 7 as punishment for her act of defiance in slipping off of to go see her parents. At the age of 10 her mother sickened and died freeing her to plot the murder of her captor. Unfortunately he was convicted of withholding profits and was executed before she could end his life personally. With the installation of a new commander, Bira was sent out into the mines.
Surviving on little more than hatred, she learned from her fellow slaves about her Bajoran heritage and she mourned for all that had been stolen. For the most part she was accepted back among her people but there were those who sought to reject her for the part she had been forced to play. The brothers Tarn Faln and Tarn Abol took her under their protection and taught her the fighting techniques of their people. Eventually Bira and Abol would enter into a union and despite her better instincts she was to repeat her parents' mistakes. Age 17 she gives birth to a daughter whom she and Abol name Greela.
2370: Able to hide her daughter until the age of five, the child was discovered and taken away to be executed before the camp when a rescue mission from Deep Space 9 arrived. Both Abol and Greela were killed in the fighting that occured and she was forced to escape with Faln or be left behind. Although the Federation mission was to free a Horta, the slaves were discovered and managed to escape upon a Cardassian ship before the moon’s atmosphere was destroyed.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet):
2370: Enlists in Starfleet, with a letter of recommendation from one of the Federation officers on the rescue mission to Davonia, and enrolls in the rigorous Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program. Her marks are such that she is admitted into the Academy at Marseille Starfleet base where she trained for two years before being transferred to San Francisco. In her third year, during the six week course for Space Walking, she distinguished herself by coming to the aid of another student and saving their life during an incident with a malfunctioning suit. Graduated in 3 years with the Commissioned rank of Ensign due to the need to fast track cadets to make up for their losses in the war.
Previous Assignments:
2373: [ Dominion War ] Security officer aboard the USS Seattle. Before the battle of Rashanar in 2375, she receives word that her daughter is still alive and in the hands of a Cardassian who escaped Davonia before its fall. Bira deserts her assignment to go on a rescue mission with her brother-in-law Faln. During her absence the Seattle is destroyed and though her personal mission was a success, she is court martialed. Convicted of desertion, her commission revoked, Bira is interred in the New Zealand Penal Settlement for 5 years. This was deemed clemency due to the nature of the incident.
2378: Due to the extenuating circumstances of her desertion, she is permitted to make an appeal for re-entry into Starfleet only after having served three years of her sentence. Bira is assigned to the USS Hecla as a non-commissioned officer with the rank of crewman. Difficult as confronting the backlash of her reputation would be, Bira set about working to regain the trust of others. Oddly enough she is reunited with a former instructor and friend from the Academy in CQC, the trill D’yar Kiax. Their eventually romance was not hidden or kept in secrecy, but the two certainly didn’t make a point of flaunting their relationship
2380: Her service on the science vessel was more rewarding than she could imagine, for she was a bit driven to keep the fight against the Cardassians alive and would rather have been assigned to a ship with a more militant mission. However an unidentified stellar anomaly damaged their ship and D’yar Kiax was heavily wounded. His symbiote, Kiax’s life is saved by the union with the Trill Ari who fortunately survived the anomaly.
Though Kiax lives on in his new host tradition prohibits a continued relationship between the two. Barred from contacting him due to the delicate nature of the newly bonded and the conflict this may evoke within both Kiax and his host, she can only comply and try to deal with yet another loss. Biar is reassigned to the USS Mac and though she has been serving starfleet for 2 years without incident her reputation is damaged and her conduct remains under strict scrutiny with this new crew and captain. It is neither here nor there to Bira; her daughter lives and is safe being raised by her uncle in the Bajoran traditions. What are a few glares and misplaced gear at her workstation compared to that?

Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
While a slave in the Cardassian mines of Davion, her disobedience caused her father to be executed as her punishment. This eventually led to the death of her mother who did not long survive without his protection.
Your character's best or favorite experience
Finding love in unexpected places. It was unsettling to find happiness in the midst of horror but she is well aware of how essential it was to her survival. It is not something she speaks on and keeps such precious things close to her chest and in her own memories. It is almost holy to her and to discuss seems like a violation of self and the bonds she has shared.
Your character's most crucial experience
Her most crucial experience was being reunited with her daughter, whom she presumed to be dead. Even though rescuing her and getting her to safety ended up with Bira losing her commission in Starfleet due to desertion, it remains the one thing of which she is proud and does not regret.
Who is your character's role model and why?
Bira doesn’t have any role models as there are very few people she desires to emulate. In her experience kindness is a charade, loyalty is pure foolishness, and sacrifice goes unrewarded. If she had to choose someone whom she at least admires, that would be Lt. Commander Worf for he clearly knows the importance of family. Not unlike herself, he had lately come to more fully embrace his cultural heritage and sadly in that she falls short. Perhaps it is survivor's guilt which makes her keep that desire always at arms length.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:

Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
They’d tracked the man, Faln and herself, to this forsaken place and as Bira lowered her field glasses she gazed upon the wealthy estate with her naked eyes in distaste. Slavery had deprived her of everything and everyone in her life, but it sure brought prosperity to this Cardassian. The site of his affluence was obscene, where he could hide even at the end of civilization in style, and filled her with rage and feelings of vengeance. She couldn’t take back all these vile monsters had stolen from her people but she could deprive this one of her daughter. She could take back the lives of her parents by ending his, couldn’t she?
Tucking her glasses into a small pack at her hip, she was done asking herself these deeper questions. Her words came out low and hushed but full of resolve, ”Time for a little payback Faln, please do try to keep up with me because I won’t be stopping to hold anyone’s hand till we’re through here.” The grim announcement was barely out of her mouth before she darted down the slope in the darkness headed for the ornate trellis at the back balcony.
The scent of over ripe fruit filled the air, fallen fruit crushed beneath her feet as she took hold of the trellis and made her silence ascent. Her brother-in-law had needed no urging from her and had propelled himself into action heading for the opposite side of the estate. The planned light show would provide a much needed distraction and she had no doubt the elder Tarn could keep whoever responded to his pyrotechnics busy without her assistance.
Even as she moved hand over hand up the trellis and swung herself over to the stone balcony above, her mind kept hoping beyond all sense of the miraculous that her daughter would recognize who she was. Surely she was old enough to have kept a picture of her mother alive in her mind? Surely the Cardassian had not been able to erase her true family from her heart? It was as close as she had ever come to prayer in her life but Bira was too much of a realist to give way to superstition.
Her mind was mission focused and nothing was going to distract her, as the trail of prone bodies in the wake of her path could attest. Thankfully her CQC training was something at which she excelled and she didn’t pause to ask for identifications. All within this estate were culpable, all save Greela. Staring down at the sleeping form of her child was the only moment in which she nearly lost that focus. She froze, her head turning to the side of its own volition as she gazed at the changes the years had made in her features. But then the spell was broken as the loud explosion from the other side of the compound was heard.
The child’s eyes flew open and there was no time for reunions or painful evaluations on what her daughter's reaction would be. Dropping to one knee she put her hand over her daughter’s mouth and said softly, ”Go back to sleep Greela, It’s mother and uncle Faln come to rescue you.”, and within seconds the damp cloth inthe palm of her hand had done its work effectively drugging her daughter. Bira wasn’t taking any chances. The next thing she did was roll her daughter onto a cloth she quickly pulled out of her belt back. Then she lay her back on her daughter and activated the fabric so that it shrank up effectively plastering Greela to her mother’s back.
Rising to her feet, adjusting for the added weight of her daughter on her back, Bira began to long trek back out of the estate and away to their transport which would see them off this hateful world and away to freedom. With every step her heart pumped as she ran unwilling to let herself feel a moment’s victory until they were well and far away. Focus. She hadn’t even let herself be sidetracked to execute the Cardassian who had...saved her daughter’s life by stealing her away from Davian. Perhaps his life was her way of paying back for that of her daughters, though she would never admit to such an oversight. Not even to herself.
