The evening after S1M6[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters, USS Mac]Judy had gotten this one wrong. She knew it, and she freely admitted it. That didn't mean she was going to enjoy Matthew Harmon telling her so. At the very least, she could allow herself to relax, in a friendly playing field. She was on the sofa in her quarters, very casually attired in a dark-blue tank top and comfortable black leggings. She had a college football game playing on her 2D projector screen in the background, with no audio. She didn't care much for the teams, Arizona State and USC, but she found the violence of American Football somewhat cathartic. On the table, Judy had a little fondue pot, with some bread and potatoes ready to dip in it - a properly posh late-evening snack for her. She also had a large pitcher of water and two glasses, and a single PADD with a stylus. Max was in the bedroom, working on a painting he'd started. Now, all that was missing was an alcoholic, to complete a meeting that was slated to be as informal as it would be consequential.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - First Officers Quarters] Harmon entered the Commander’s quarters precisely five minutes after the time he had been invited for. He was still wearing his uniform, having not bothered to change as he was busy working and compiling reports. That and it made him a little more presentable and overdressed for this occasion. Unsurprisingly, his suspicions had been proven correct, though that word seemed a little reductive to him as he based his hostility towards the Alliance on data and experience, not speculation, gut feeling, or optimistic naïveté. He hadn’t come to gloat, however. For all her many faults and failings, the Commander has admitted she was wrong. His aim was to get her to listen to his advice this time. Rubbing her mistakes in was far to easy and in this case unproductive. “Ma’am,” he said curtly as he entered. “I was going to bring you some wine, but I recall you don’t drink,” he said. He figured she was expecting him to come grinning and declaring ‘I told you so’ but he had decided to remain as courteous and polite as he could bear to. Throw her off guard a little. “You know, you Yanks really ought to try rugby some time,” he said indicating towards the screen at the game. “Your football is weaker than your bear.” Tag Judith Eastman

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters, USS Mac]Judy was just a little surprised to see Harmon carrying on in a pleasant manner. It suited him, but it was so unlike him. However, neither that, nor the fact that he was rather overdressed, took the XO out of her zen mode. "Max actually tried to get me into rugby, however many years ago, but he's not steeped enough in the rivalries to teach me that," she engaged in the topic of rugby. "That's half the fun of watching football, the trash talk, the tribalism."Having taken this brief, introspective dive into her own love of football, she motioned at an armchair across from the sofa, inviting Harmon to sit. "It's really that tribalism that got us into this situation today, just with much, much higher stakes," she transitioned straight to business. "Is there a scenario you can see where Banks being so brazen, and so reckless, gave Vasser more long-term benefits, beyond winning, over a properly sneaky infiltration?"Judy skewered one of the small potatoes on a fondue fork, and took it for a little dip in the pot; she then ate it as she listened to Harmon.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - First Officer's Quarters]"Indeed," Harmon said cautiously as the Commander made her sports analogy. He took the chair as directed, it was quite comfortable. Fortunately, she wasn't one for small talk and they quickly got onto business. He sat back in his chair and contemplated her question for a moment before answering. "I see a few possibilities. Vasser may simply have underestimated how seriously you would take Banks' actions. The sabotage was relatively minor, and we're still running forensic analysis on the Computer systems to determine what they accessed. Another possibility is Banks went a little rogue and was not acting on Vasser's orders. I don't think that is very likely, however. Perhaps Vasser didn't give her any clear specific orders and effectively gave Banks a blank cheque. Then there's the more obvious scenarios, Vasser just really wanted to win, and or this was an attempt at inflitration and espionage," he explained the most likely scenarios. "As for what she thought she'd gain, it's hard to speculate. I don't know her and the way she operates well enough yet. If I had to guess, beyond winning, it might have been a distraction from something else. It seems like a bad move if her goal was intel, we probably wouldn't have found Banks anywhere near as quickly if she hadn't planted those devices."

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters]After finishing the potato, Judy sketched out a t-chart on her PADD, and noted some possibilities on it. Bigger game | Bigger game | - Banks a distraction - probably?
| - Vasser loves winning
- Banks rogue

"So, we can more or less consider two families of scenarios: either there was a bigger game, or there wasn't," she noted once Matt had finished speaking. "Let's assume the worst, which is that they did this to slip something else under our noses - and you know mine is a big nose. Suppose it was you, what kind of operation would you want to hide with this kind of distraction?" she asked. Judy herself was very much not playing on familiar turf when it came to Intelligence. She knew this well, and she was accordingly not speculating at this juncture. Instead, she took another baby potato and dipped it into the fondue pot, while briefly eyeing a second fondue fork that Matt could use.
