Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career: For the most part, Jeliel had a fairly standard Deltan childhood. Like most Deltan children, he spent his childhood as an only child and bounced back and forth between living with his mother and father so that they both could take part in his upbringing. His mother, working as an art therapist (though she simply refers to herself as a sculptor), nurtured his love of the natural word and sparked an interest in cooking. She stressed to him the importance of being open and honest with himself and those around him. His father, on the other hand, was somewhat of a local legend; he had made a name for himself within the music industry and he spent much of his time touring around the planet. He encouraged his son to chase his dreams and to always take the time to enjoy the beauty in life. Young Jeliel quickly grew tired of the stardom, but he cherished the moments that the two of them could get away for a quiet day of sailing.
When Jeliel was twelve, his father welcomed a daughter into the world and Jeliel gained a half-sister. The two of them grew close over the years as they shared a sibling bond that so few of their species had.
Jeliel was educated through a series of apprenticeships and attended a university of natural science. By his early twenties, he was attempting to make a life for himself as a botanist. He'd take off for months at a time on long sailing adventures in which he would travel from island to island (much of Delta IV consists of clusters of islands), as he attempted to study the local flora. He met a lot of interesting new people, never passed up on a good party, and he was building a sizable collection of recipes that seemed to go over well at social functions. Life was pretty great, until the Borg attacked.
For safety reasons, offworlders weren't allowed on the planet. Deltans maintained an orbital station to meet and turn away outsiders, but being the peaceful people they were, the station wasn't designed to defend against attack. Before word could reach the planet below, the station was disabled and Delta IV was invaded. The attack lasted only minutes but with it came a great loss of life, further threatening their already low population numbers.
It was Starfleet that showed up to their aid, otherwise the whole planet might have been lost.
When he was twenty-six, he gained another half-sister (his sisters each have different mothers). While having one half-sibling was uncommon, having two was extremely rare and added to his father's popularity, for reasons other than his music.
Deciding that he wanted to do more with his life, and not live in his father's shadow, Jeliel decided to join Starfleet and jumped at the opportunity to venture beyond the scope of his homeworld, something few Deltans did. Starfleet had done much to help rebuild in the aftermath of the attack and Jeliel thought he could learn so much more to help his people through the shared knowledge of the Federation. So he took the Oath of Celibacy that all Deltans must take in order to leave the planet and he headed for the academy.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet): It took some time and adjustment for him to fit in with the unusually guarded personalities of other species, but he learned to adjust at the academy once he dived in and really focused on the coursework. Having being older and already having experience in his field of study, Jeliel was fast tracked through the science program and still had some time to devote to exploring coral reefs and sampling many varied dishes from a variety of different cultures. He didn't graduate with the top of his class, but he felt he got enough out of the experience to justify the time he put in. And he passed, that's what mattered.
Previous Assignments (if applicable): After graduation he spent a few years bouncing around between assignments as a part of a large terraforming project focusing on restoring worlds decimated in the wake of the Dominion War. It was a rewarding job, but he missed getting his hands dirty and actually exploring what a planet had to offer. Spending all day in some sterile lab, running calculations on a PADD on ideal levels of biodiversity, just wasn't for him. When he heard about an opening on a station on the edge of the Beta Quadrant that would allow for some planetary field research, he requested a transfer.
Birthdate:
Birthplace: On a tiny island, within a small archipelago along the South Eastern hemisphere of Delta IV, just South of the Equator.
Marital Relationship Status & spouse name(s): "It's complicated."
Siblings Names and Ages: half sisters; Ashilia (24) and Teahan (10)
Parents' Names: Ilania (mother) and Aldeo (father)
Parents' Status: Though they frequent different social circles, they remain on good terms with one another.
Other Important Relatives: Everyone on the island back home was like family, even if not related by blood.
Pets: "I can explain to you my latest pet project, but if you mean an animal, the answer is no. Tried that once but the thing kept climbing shelves, knocked over a terrarium and made a huge mess. There was soil scattered all over my shared quarters and my roommate was not happy about it."
Best Friend: "Hmmm...can a plant be considered a friend? No, don't look at me like that, it's not that I don't have friends, I would say that I have many, but how do you go about picking a 'best' one?"
Personality
Department Preference: Science, with a specialty in botany, genetics and terraforming
Commissioned, Enlisted or Civilian: Commissioned
Reason for joining Starfleet or moving to a Federation base: In part to travel the universe and explore new life out there, that's what everyone says, right? In truth, it's partly to get as far away from the death and destruction of war and you can't get much further from that than the far reaches of the Beta Quadrant. I was also told there's a jungle that hasn't yet been properly catalogued.
Academy/Tech Majors and Interests: Botany, terraforming and genetics, with a few courses on cultures and cuisine.
Hobbies: "Cooking, with a passion. Not just cooking thought, it's the whole processes from special breeding of crops, designing the perfect dish to maximize it's favor potential and then taking the time to savor each and very last bite."
"I also enjoy capturing nature through photography, hiking and swimming, when I get the chance. And sailing, there's nothing like a nice day out on the water."
Short-term Goals: "Career goals? Life goals? Personal goals?"
"Well, I would love to get the chance to explore this jungle I've heard about, see what's growing down there, see if there's anything interesting we can bring back to the lab and research. Perfect a souffle recipe I've been working on for a few months now and meet some new people...I don't know, try a new holodeck or fitness routine."
Long-term Goals: Catalogue all the plant samples on the station. Create timed-lapsed imagery of all living plant specimens and continue work on trying to make improvements through selective breeding of samples to develop new and ever increasingly beneficial crops.
Defining Characteristic: Jeliel is an open book; Deltans aren't known for keeping secrets or hiding their emotions. He has been told that he can be annoying optimistic at times and is way too cheerful. He talks to plants and if he likes you he will probably try to gift you some or cook for you, or both.
Sense of Humor: He's still working on this. He likes to playfully tease those he considers friends, but his intentions are never to hurt someone. He's still trying to learn sarcasm and he doesn't get dark humor at all.
Phobias or Fears: Isolation, dying alone, being outcast or rejected, not being able to experience the beauty in life and all the joy it brings.
Favorite Things: A good meal with good company, spending time with his plants, and sailing.
Least Favorite Things: People who are constantly negative or complaining, boring and predictable people, people who hate plants and pet owners who allow their animals to get out and dig up plants in the botany lab only to defecate on them.
Bad Habits or Vices: A shameless flirt and he's still learning that some members of other species don't always appreciate when you speak your mind
Achievements (personal or professional): Graduating the Academy (There are so few Deltans willing to take the Oath and even apply) and navigating The Great Tropical Storm of '68
Disappointments: Disappointment comes in giving up and admitting failure or being too afraid to try in the first place.
Illnesses: None.
Strengths: He's active, physically fit, emotionally open, calm and level-headed.
Weaknesses: "Red wine, maybe a decent Rosé, some dark chocolates, a candlelight dinner, long walks in the holodeck, a nice jawline, coy smirks and a witty sense of humor. What, not the kind of weaknesses you were looking for?"
Feelings of homesickness, missing family, and longing for a sense of connection with others.
Prejudices: This concept is rather foreign to Deltans
Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience Paying witness to the death and destruction the Borg brought to his homeworld. The loss of life was unfathomable, both to his species and the environment.
Your character's best or favorite experience This would probably have to be the first time his father took him out on the water. The sea was a bit choppy that morning but Jeliel begged his father to take him. Luckily, the sky cleared up by late afternoon, they caught and cooked a nice fish dinner on the beach and his father taught him a little about how to navigate by the stars that night.
Your character's most crucial experience
Who is your character's role model and why? It's hard to pick just one, it was the combined effort of so many being involved in his upbringing that helped shape him into who he is today. The phrase, "it takes a village to raise a child," is perfect example of Deltan culture.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
[Front Ear - Shuttlebay]
"Oh, careful with that," Jeliel attempted to extend an arm out in the direction of the young crewman assisting with with unloading the shuttle, only to quickly pull the arm back so as to sturdy the specimen jar he was carrying in his other arm. Soil shifted in the jar as the sapling shifted position. "I have samples in there I've brought with me from the Alpha Quadrant that can't easily be replaced."
At the base of the shuttle sat several crates of lab equipment and supplies. How he was going to get all of it off the shuttle and to the Botany Lab, now that was the question.
"Is there any chance we can get a site to site transport?" He asked the young ensign. "Or do you think we're going to have to move it ourselves?" He had loaded all of it on to the shuttle himself, but that was prior to a three day shuttle voyage. At this point in time, all he wanted to do was find a comfortable place to relax and hopefully met someone who responded to his inquiries with more than just a nod or a shrug.
Do you have previous experience with a role-play forum? Yes, lots.
