In preparation for the Mirrorverse event, we have to establish some site canon about it. Here's what Matthew Harmon and I have come up with.
As alluded to in the Trek canon, the Terran Empire underwent democratization reforms directed by Spock, which left it weaker. This allowed the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance to take over, enslaving humans and at times murdering them en masse.
In the core regions, the Terran Rebellion fights the Alliance. However, in our region of space, there is really no Alliance and no Rebellion.
The foremost presence here is the Nyberrite League, a pluralistic society whose mantra is the defense of the weak. The Nyberrites accept a large number of Terran and other refugees, which has made them a staging ground for resistance groups.
Also in this region is the planet Kurjaria, controlled by the Kurjarian Confederation. This theocratic regime subjugates the other species on their world, the Caldonians, to work the Trillium mines of the world. Very few dare to confront the Kurjarians, because they need the Trillium.
One of the few groups who do fight the Kurjarians is the Democratic Front. A group formed of Nyberrite and Terran Rebellion alumni, this group is led by Matthew Harmon, a man of great commitment and principle. They are underfunded and outnumbered, but they fight the good fight.
A stark contrast to the Democratic Front is presented by the local Rebellion-affiliated administration, under Commissioner Judy Eastman - a product of the old Imperial aristocracy. This group operates as one part military group, one part protection racket. By controlling the space lanes, Eastman has made herself indispensable to the rebellion, despite her lack of moral principles. This faction also has close ties with the Kurjarians.
