[ PO1 Kaya Som | Frontier Station, common area in enlisted quarters ] [ Evening. In the days following Taking Flight ]The dark lenses of Kaya Som's goggles reflected the spray of sparks from the welding torch. She mumbled through a tiny screwdriver held between her teeth, holding a conversation with her mechanical subject's caretaker. "Nothing ever came of it, so I guess he just let it go," she said regarding the confrontation she'd initiated with Joshua Niles right in front of Charlie. "Smug git." She hadn't heard yet that Charlie had been on a date with the object of Kaya's disdain. With that, she shut off the torch, lifted the goggles and sat back. Then she blew on the gently smoking joint, just the first step in putting poor Olsen back together. Charlie Fox

[Charlie Fox - Common area, enlisted quarters] "I figured he would let it go; he said absolutely nothing about it afterward," Charlie responded, pulling her legs up beneath her as she made herself comfortable on a chair. In one hand she held a PADD, technical readouts in a programming language she barely understood streaming across it. She might have a passing knowledge of Olsen's innards, enough for her to manipulate some of his mods and get in trouble, but so much of the mechanical stuff was all way, way outside of her wheelhouse. Thankfully, Kaya Som had agreed to help. Charlie had helpfully brought beer. It hadn't taken long for conversation to turn toward the argument she'd witnessed between the engineer and Joshua Niles, which had taken place after their trip to the Jupiter Star. "You can't discipline someone for having an opinion." There was more to it than that, of course, but that was the gist of Charlie's take-away from the whole thing. She leaned forward as Kaya blew, expression keenly interested. "What now?" She'd asked the same thing every step of the way, like a nervous, travel-sick child on a long road trip.

"You can't discipline someone for having an opinion."At that, Kaya smiled big and barked a laugh. Merely having an opinion would never get her into trouble - it was always the method of delivery. But it didn't matter. It was just nice to hang out with a civilian. It had been awhile. Joining Starfleet had been a massive cultural disruption for Kaya and sitting here with a normal person make her feel a little bit more like her self. The little droid on the table was still unrecognizeable as the sprite-like orb. It was once a constant compantion to Charlie like her own personal satellite with an all-seeing eye. Unfortunately, he'd been reduced to a little pile of parts which were now organized on the table. "Well, this bit's our mate's little heart," Kaya explained pointing at the power source. "Now all hooked up to the net - like a wee little nervous system." Kaya's affection for the little mechanical critter was apparent. She handed Charlie a small hand-held device, a sort of remote helper for the repairs. "Give'm some juice." Charlie Fox

[Charlie Fox - Common Area, Enlisted Quarters]At the unexpected laugh, Charlie's mouth curled upward in a grin. It had been a while since she'd heard that sound, and she realised its absence was down to her own doing. She leaned over when Kaya pointed at Olsen's power source, unable to stop the little "Aw!" that escaped her when it was referred to as his heart. With interest, Charlie listened closely and watched every movement of the engineer's hands. When she was offered the small device, she took it readily, and after only a moment's hesitation, she activated it. "It's alive, it's ALIIIIIIVE!" She declared with a cackle as the device gave it the requested "juice", quoting a famous Earth horror from the 20th Century. Naturally, she didn't consider that her trill friend might think her a bit unhinged, she was too preoccupied with enjoying herself and the prospect that she might eventually get her little round drone back.

"Yeah, sure, of course it is," Kaya agreed with a slow nod, as if to encourage a child. It was sweet, Charlie punchy for her drone. Truthfully, it was a relief the little fellow's diodes lit up and the little servos buzzed with vim and vigor, ready to stabilze. Then, Kaya took back the remote and plugged in a string-thin cord and tapped in a few commands. "Diagnostics," she explained. Next she dug in her bag and pulled out a small ceramic cylindar, no thicker than a pencil, no longer than a finger. On one end and indigo light. The other, Kaya stuck in her mouth an inhaled. On exhale, a little puff of thick violet vapor. She offered it to Charlie and then got comfortable in the chair. It would take a couple minutes. "So, you ever figure out just who killed Olsen?" [Charlie Fox - Common Area, Enlisted Quarters]Charlie found herself grinning broadly at Kaya's response to her weirdness, her good mood buoyed by the fact that Olsen had indeed shown some life, and the engineer's apparent willingness to humour her. She watched closely still when Kaya took back the remote and began running some diagnostics. Charlie shook her head when the interesting looking vape-contraption was offered to her, and instead reached out to pull a beer from the small carrier on a nearby table. She twisted the top, took a long draft and considered Kaya's question as her eyes followed the curls of dissipating smoke. "Not really, bastard got away scot-free, anyway," she replied after taking a moment to swallow her beer. She licked her lips and continued, "It was something native, though. And that rock was well-shot. Flew out of the brush and clocked him right between the eyes - if he had them."She took another sip and leaned back in the chair, fingers absently tapping on her knee. "Nobody is offering me a look at any official reports, but it looks like none of us civvies will be going back down on that planet for a while, at least not until whoever the intruders were have been dealt with." The irony that they too should be considered intruders to any wildlife on Kerelia was not lost on her. "And the Kerelia piece the FNN was planning on putting out was pulled." She shook her head, obviously having no faith in any of them to sort out the mess. "I hear you saw some action, too," she said, index finger uncurling from the neck of her beer bottle to point at Kaya.

Kaya settled back into her chair, bringing a leg up. She let the cool flowery vapor elevate her neurons and push the walls of the room a little further back. "Action? Ha-de-zhi, I don't even remember. Founds a dragon in a net trap and then one of the Sivaoans got jumped. If I never had to go back to Kerelia... No people, no ships. It's just..." She thought for a moment, then wrinkled her nose. "...just camping with scientists." Scientists all in a tizzy over new berries. "Why'd they pull your piece? Get yourself in hot soup over the Talorians?" Charlie Fox's whole thing aboard the station and sometimes- Mac put her in an awkward place. She made a lot of people feel watched, even people who felt like they had nothing to hide. That, and the Federation News Network didn't have a great deal to gain from criticizing Starfleet, other than perhaps being seen as ethically robust. The trouble with the truth was that the Mac seemed to attract a great deal of it. Charlie Fox

[Charlie Fox - Common Area, Enlisted Quarters]Camping with scientists.Charlie let out a sharp bark of laughter at the observation. That sounded awful. She shook her head, took another pull from the bottle of beer and then found herself shrugging her shoulders. "Amidst getting rugby-tackled by Sec/Tac and dragons and poor little Olsen there getting the stuffing knocked out of him, there was a moment or two when I thought it might not be so bad." Albeit those moments where largely when she was alone, but still. "There was this great viewing spot above the camp, near the caves. Might have inspired a line or two of flowery praise at sunrise."Very romantic. She turned her body in the seat so that her legs were dangling over the edge of the chair's arm. She leaned back, eyes rolling up to ceiling when conversation turned to the politicking FNN. "Always in hot soup over those guys." The Talorians had made it clear how unhappy they were over her coverage. She continued, "Not them this time, though. The Feds want colonists on Kerelia, and nothing I wrote would encourage anyone to come within a light-year radius of the place. So instead of dealing with any fallout, my editor decided the smartest move was just to pull the piece altogether. Can't get in trouble for saying nothing, I guess."Tired of studying the dull ceiling, she rolled her head back toward Kaya as she worked. "Just before everything went to crap Olsen caught some really amazing footage of something mammoth in the water off the coast. I have no idea how the egg-heads keep missing all of the dangers down there, but something tells me they'll keep trying to figure it out. I heard a rumour that the Diamond Dog has landed on the surface at least twice since."

Kaya took another draw from her kidza and grinned at Charlie's forthcoming explanations of her predicaments, and there were several. Poor woman. But at least she only had a couple people giving her orders and she could come and go as she pleased. "That's hilarious," she said, droll. She hadn't heard, though, about getting tackled by Sec/Tac. She could imagine it though. A few of the newer additions were rather gung-ho. But then, sometimes you needed that kind of thing with the Mac's luck. "Who's Diamond Dog again? That's not that lot from Alpha Centauri is it?" Loads of civilian ships came through the station, and Kaya couldn't keep track of them all. Charlie Fox

[Charlie Fox - Common Area, Enlisted Quarters]"Nah, Costa's ship. Supplies the Beta and a few other establishments on Front Ear, runs from Starbase Sierra," Charlie supplied when queried about the Diamond Dog's origin. "I'm wondering what a group of freight-hauling spacers are doing taking regular vacations down the gravity well of Kerelia." Yet another curiosity that she couldn't find an answer for. She found herself considering just how high up in the Fleet you'd have to be to get clearance to investigate certain mysteries. Often, as had been proven during her brief work with Kova Sh'qaleq, civilians had much more room to maneuver, but there was a lot to be said for ease of access. Perhaps Harmon might know something about it - she decided she'd ask. "Who is the lot from Alpha Centauri?" Charlie asked, suddenly distracted by the thread of conversation she'd almost neglected to pull. "Are they giving problems?" Her stomach made a gurgling noise and she grimaced. It had been a while since she'd had beer and it was beginning to make its presence known.

Kaya shook her head, no. "No, I was just thinking of something else. I then the Centaurians run, like, spices or wine or something."
The diagnostics churned along, providing little green [success] messages along the way. It was a good sign. It meant that most, if not all, Olsen's damage had been structural and very little of the little blighter's brains had been scrambled.
"Mmhmm," she said approvingly before getting back to Diamond Dog. She smiled, holding the kidza in her teeth a moment.
"But yeah, I'm remembering Costa. Tall, strikes fears in hearts? Do you know her? She and them are welcome to that backwater jungle as far as I'm concerned."
Ding!
Kaya leaned forward to check the screen again, then lifted her hands in a little victory. "Tick-tock, tick-tock, little dude's ready to rock." She wiggled her shoulders in a little dance.

[Charlie Fox - Common Area, Enlisted Quarters]"Hmm. Spices and wine, eh?" Charlie asked, her suspicions suddenly raised as she casually observed Kaya. "There's a market for everything out here." She left it at that, taking another generous swig from her beer as the diagnostics continued to scroll along merrily. When conversation turned to Costa, Charlie nodded in the affirmative. "Yeah, they sell me info every now and then," she shared. She knew full well, as would anyone else, that the crew of the Diamond Dog and their prickly captain would never give her anything that didn't somehow serve them. Still, it was handy to know people in all sorts of places. She could easily agree with Kaya's sentiments regarding Kerelia. She didn't think either of them would be celebrating nuptials on the planet's white sandy beaches any time soon. For a multitude of reasons. At the sudden sound of the ding, Charlie swung her legs around and leaned forward, her boots making a heavy thud on the floor as they hit it. "YES!" Her smile was huge as she watched Kaya dance a little victory dance, and couldn't stop herself from joining in with a version of her own. "Olsen! Thy heart beats! Thou hast returned to me!" She swooned for dramatic effect, then leaned over to get a closer look at the recovered holorecorder. "Aren't you lucky you have a fairy godmother this talented?" Then, she addressed the magician herself. "So, what's the prognosis, Doc?"Charlie had seriously underestimated how much she relied on Olsen to do her job. The last few weeks had been a lesson in humility, one that she was happy to chalk up and then promptly forget.

Kaya wielded the electric joint like a magic wand and waved it over the little gadget, the vapor making a pleasing swirl. Then she put it back between her teeth. "He's going to pull through, Mama Fox. Little guy's going to be alright," Kaya said with a smile and began to unhook all her diagnositc cables and sensors so she could begin putting all his pieces back together. "Are you going to stick around here?" Kaya asked as she began. "There are more exciting parts of the Beta Quadrant unless you find three kinds of Earth pub food and constant station malfunctions thrilling." She asked with a smile, but they'd both seen the carnage on the Jupiter Star. Charlie Fox

[Charlie Fox - Common Area, Enlisted Quarters]Charlie raised her bottle of beer up in a toast to Olsen's recovery, and then took a long swig. She grinned at Kaya's question, more than a little amused by her short description of Front Ear. "I've been thinking about what to do next. Can't say this has been the most exciting year of my life, but I haven't been sacked yet, which says a lot." She said it in such a way that suggested she thought it was only a matter of time before she was given the boot, but she wasn't all that bothered by the notion. There were loose ends she wanted to tie off if she could, and stories she'd like to follow to some manner of conclusion. The Talorian situation being one of them. "What about you?" She asked, brows raised. "You're not exactly the usual Fleet type. And I mean that in the best possible way," she amended, before returning her bottle to a nearby end-table and repositioning her legs beneath her. Kaya Som had proven she wasn't just some wet greenie who followed orders mindlessly, in fact, she appeared to be the exact opposite. She hadn't been afraid to tell a superior she thought he was wrong, regardless of his rank. "With your skills you could wrangle yourself passage on so many ships. Heck, you could start your own business, be your own boss."

Kaya had her eyes on the work, but her body language was clear enough. She worked a pair of tiny tools, like she was a living surgical robot. "Threaten me with a good time," she said dryly. "Honestly, I haven't thought much further behind my own spite and pettiness which I swiftly drown in the shared galactic creativity in medicinal herb and plenty." Blithe and cynical - it wasn't her typical mode. She glanced up to Charlie with a slightly manic smile. "But what was she expecting? To get her hands on the Federation's finest and shiniest calling on culturally-awakening ports? Follow an order or two, battle cabin fever with other adventure-minded sorts from all corners of the cosmos but at the end of the day, it's all for some worthy ideal, right?" Kaya answered her own nostalgia with a wince to herself. "She definitely didn't expect to be helping spec fighter craft or getting ritual sacrificed. I never pegged myself for naïve, but what twenty-two year old isn't." She sat up and took a long draw, like some grizzled veteran of the stage looking back on the career of a broken ingénue.
