2 weeks after the events of S1M9 and S1E10[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station]With Commodore Perry gone, Judy had assumed the duties of (acting) command. It was a natural transition, and truth be told, not a drastic one. She tried to make it as smooth as could be for the crew, especially in light of all the instability inherent in not having a proper CO. On this day, she had a call scheduled with Starfleet HQ, though the exact topic was unknown to her. For a woman who so liked to be prepared, that wasn't ideal, but it just meant she had to review her assorted notes on all station operations. As for the topic of command, Judy had not actively lobbied for the permanent position, nor had she shied away from it. Rather, she advocated simply for a permanent CO, to bring stability to their outpost. "Admiral, good morning," she acknowledged the superior officer on the other end of the line, with the usual courtesy.

[Admiral Sarah Nader - Starfleet HQ - San Franciso, CA - Earth] The admiral's administrative aid dinged her just before connecting the call to Commander Eastman, so she was just looking up as the slightly older woman appeared on her computer screen. Good morning, Commander, she said briskly. I won't waste your time. My reasons for calling are twofold.
I'm heading the investigation of Commodore Perry's disappearance and I wanted to update you on the status. Unfortunately, that's bad news. Our investigator has found no signs of the transport. It seems to have vanished without a trace. If your intelligence officer comes up with anything, inform my office immediately. I'm certain he's got his ear to the ground, she said with a wry half-smile. Nader paused to allow Eastman to respond, deciding to hold her other news for the moment. Best to get one piece of business taken care of at a time.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station]Judy sighed. She had come to expect the worst regarding Perry's disappearance, and unfortunately it seemed that expectation was validated. She chuckled politely at the pun. Jokes on the station's names were... numerous, and after nearly a year, most of them just seemed like repeats. Still, courtesy was courtesy. "I'll let him know," she said. For all his many faults, Harmon had proven himself time and again to be good at his job, and perhaps he could find something that Starfleet's dedicated investigators wouldn't. "I hope the second matter is less dark," she half-joked, motioning for them to move forward since she didn't have anything to add. She was a straight shooter, and not looking to spend an extended time on empty words.

[Admiral Sarah Nader - Starfleet HQ - San Franciso, CA - Earth] Nader's face softened into a real smile as she responded, It is indeed. At least, I hope you'll find it so. Her tone turned more serious. The commodore's appointment to Front Ear was as much for his benefit as the station's. He's a good man who needed a bit of a boost to get back on his feet.
With his disappearance, obviously you are left with a command void again.
Commander Judith Eastman, due to your years of service, valor during the Dominion War and your excellent work since your assignment to Front Ear, I'm pleased to inform you that you are hereby promoted to the rank of captain, with all of the responsibilities and privileges thereof. I would have liked to have been there personally to tell you, but circumstances just don't allow it.
Congratulations, Captain. It was a well-deserved promotion, and the admiral was pleased to be the one to convey the news.

[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Ens. Mabel Henriksen - First Commanding Officer's Office, Front Ear Station]The first expression to come over Judy's face was a contented smile. "Captain Eastman" - Michael would be thrilled, and Judy herself could certainly get used to it. After 22 years of service, and 64 years of life, she was more than ready. That transitioned to an expression of relief, not for her personally but for the station. The station didn't need her, but it did need a steady hand, and if she could be that hand, then of course she would be. "Thank you. I'm honored," the new Captain said, dignified and poised as always. Just offscreen, she waved Mabel over and scrawled a note. "Invite Saya for candle-lighting tonight. Families welcome." Mabel nodded and went back to her own nook to get it done. The young woman was more than a little excited. Judy was the Captain now, which made Mabel the Assistant to the Captain. =A= "Henriksen to Ozu. Thou art hereby summoned to seek an audience, alongside thy family, with thy boss, the Right Honorable Judy Eastman, at 1900 hours," =A= Mabel proclaimed, with perhaps too much pizzazz. "I'd best get to work, Admiral. There's plenty to be done," Judy told the Admiral, trying very hard to hide her mixed amusement with Mabel. At least the young woman hadn't revealed the big news in her own excitement.
{Stand-alone: Judy shares the news with Max and Anna}1200 hours [Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman-Williams, First Gentleman Max Williams, & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer’s Quarters]
The gentle clip-clopping of orthopedic shoes was a sure tell for Max that his wife, the First Officer, was home.
”Someone’s in early,” he noted. ”Well, maybe I just missed you that much,” Judy replied, before moving in for a kiss.
”You said we need to talk,” Max pointed out. ”That’s right. We have something to talk about as a family. Let’s sit down,” she answered.
The couple sat down at the family table, joined by Anna.
”So, Mom, what is it?” Anna asked, in between bites of spaghetti. ”Well, my lovelies, you’re speaking to the Captain,” Judy answered, setting down her own fork. ”Of here?” Max asked. Judy nodded. He flashed a smile, and then promptly moved in for a kiss. ”Congrats, Mom,” Anna congratulated as soon as her parents were done with their celebratory PDA. ”You’ll be great, honey,” Max added. ”Honestly, it’s overdue. I’d think the Admirals are ageist, if they weren’t your age,” Anna commented. ”It’s not mutually exclusive,” Judy mused. ”The older we get, the less we think of other old folks.” ”And the less we think of young folks. Some of these Admirals, these little 50-somethings, they’re just babies,” Max added, more self-satire than anything. ”Anyway, Mom, I believe in you,” Anna concluded. She also believed that more duties for Captain Eastman would mean a more tired, and therefore typically mellower, Mom at home. ”Thank you, you two. I couldn’t do it without you.”
{ Stand-alone: Judy shares the news with Lawrence and the grandchildren} {Click for a breakdown of the Eastman-Williams Family} Captain Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD Max WilliamsLawrence EastmanJessica Schwarz Eastman, PsyD Anna Eastman WilliamsMichael EastmanHelen EastmanBenjamin Eastman 1630 hrs[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) et al. - First Commanding Officer's Quarters, Front Ear Station]After Judy had concluded her shift, and changed out of her duty uniform, the new Captain was joined by her son Lawrence's branch of the family tree. "Hi, mom, hi, Dad," Lawrence greeted the family matriarch, as his children swarmed into her home. "Hello, young man," she returned the greeting, standing up from the couch. Max picked up Benny, almost two years old now, with an exaggeratedly triumphant gesture. "You're growing so fast," the proud Grandfather exclaimed. "I'm big," Benny asserted. "I do hope all the big boys and girls have room for ice cream," Judy half-whispered, inviting excited bouncing from Michael and Helen as she walked over to the freezer. If there was one thing Grandma and Grandpa could always be counted on to give, it was treats. "Don't give them too much, Judy," the kids' long-suffering (and somewhat pregnant-looking) mother, Jessica, not so much ordered as begged, knowing the gesture was futile. "I'll try," Judy replied, not making any outright promises she couldn't keep. "And fail," Anna pointed out. Once all three grandkids, as well as Anna and the adults, were furnished with generously-loaded cones of ice cream, Judy and Max exchanged a glance, and then both nodded. This was a good time. "We have some news to share with you," Max announced. "What's up?" Helen asked. "Your Grandma here, your amazing Grandma, got promoted to Captain this morning. Now she's in charge of the whole station," Max explained, while wrapping his left arm (the ice cream was in his right) around Judy's waist. It was a possessive gesture, subconsciously staking his claim on her. Michael's jaw dropped. "Congratulations, Mom," Lawrence said. He didn't spend a lot of time picking around his mother's work, a legacy of the very technical work she had done when he was growing up, but this was certainly big news. "Captain Grandma. That's awesome," Michael finally articulated his thoughts into a sentence. To him, this was the world righting itself: Starfleet captains were figures of supreme authority and power, to the 6-year-old, as was his Grandmother, so it made sense for her to hold this rank. "It is pretty awesome, isn't it?" Judy replied, smiling broadly at her predictably eager grandson. "In charge of everything?" Benny asked. "Most things. Grandma can't be a meanie, or people will go away. Grandma has to be nice," Jessica answered, a simple enough explanation. As the ice cream went down, the conversation went on. "Why weren't you a Captain already?" Michael asked. "Well, young man, I had other priorities. I joined Starfleet at a relatively old age, older than your Dad is now, and I stuck to posts on Earth for many years so I could focus on raising your uncle Thomas and aunt Anna. I only started taking the kinds of jobs that lead to being a Captain when the war came, and Starfleet needed me," Judy explained. "It wasn't something I really thought about doing.""For us, family always comes first. You lot are the most important thing to Grandma and me, more than any job," Max added. "Are you ever going to be an Admiral, Grandma?" Helen asked. "I don't think so, sweetheart. Admirals just go to meetings all day long, and that's boring," Judy replied without a second thought. "And now you don't?" Anna sassed. "Captains are really cool, actually," Michael protested. "Gosh, you're both adorable," Judy exclaimed. 1900 hrs[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), First Gentleman Max Williams, & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer's Quarters, Front Ear Station]The family had reacted favorably to the big news[fn]See stand-alone posts in spoilers[/fn], with all being very supportive of the matriarch's new position. For this candle-lighting, of the 5th night of Hanukkah, a characteristically heavy menu of deep-fried (in the Jewish tradition), garlicky (in the Eastman-Williams family tradition) fare was prepared. Unbeknownst to Judy, Max and Anna had prepared a celebratory cake as well. With the table set, the family awaited their guests' arrival.

[Admiral Sarah Nader - Starfleet HQ - San Franciso, CA - Earth] Congratulations again, Captain, Nader repeated. I'll keep you apprised of the situation with the commodore. You'll have to choose an XO, don't forget. I look forward to seeing who you choose.
Nader out.~~~~~ [ MCPO Ozu Saya - Chief Engineer's Office] Saya looked up from the engineering report she was reading and raised an eyebrow at Mabel's unusual verbiage and tone. The young woman was often excitable, but in this case seemed particularly so. =/\= Acknowledged, Ensign. We will be there. =/\= She signed off and tapped the comm controls on her computer. =/\= Hey, I didn't expect to hear from you. Are you working late? No, we've been invited to Judy's. =/\= 1900 hrs[Judy's Quarters] Saya had hurried home after her shift for a quick sonic shower and change of clothes. She'd ended up crawling around in a maintenance shaft and getting covered in...something. Saya wanted to believe it was grease, but she was afraid it had been the remains of some creature that had died and decomposed. It certainly had smelled bad enough. The smell emanating from behind the Eastman-Williams's door was much more enticing - and garlicky, as usual. Saya hit the door chime with her free hand, the other occupied with holding Evekh's hand. Kyo carried a covered dish, their own offering to the meal, a concoction of their own invention - fried hasperat bites. Hasperat was a favorite for both of them, and rolling it into balls wrapped in dough and frying them had made it a nice snack food or side dish. This wasn't the first time they'd been invited to share in the Jewish holidays, and Kyo had been able to switch up his afternoon plans and cook instead of working on one of his compositions.

[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), First Gentleman Max Williams, & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer's Quarters, Front Ear Station]Hearing the sound of the chimes, the corgis darted towards the door, faster than the humans could. With the puppies all given away to loving new homes, Bridge and Tunnel were back to their usual shenanigans. "Down, both of you!" Judy ordered them, knowing full well that her dogs were perhaps the only residents of the station who truly, completely, couldn't care less about her elevation to the Captaincy. She opened the door, while Anna knelt down to hold Bridge by his collar. "Hello, hello," the older woman greeted the guests. "I'm glad you could make it on such short notice.""We need the extra mouths to help us here, or we'll end up latke-shaped," Max quipped, coming up behind Judy. Wearing a royal-blue button-up and black slacks, his outfit was color-coordinated with her flowing, royal blue dress. Anna, in jeans and a holiday-themed sweater[fn] [/fn] hewed to the same color scheme while asserting a measure of independence.

[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Judy's Quarters] The door opened and Evekh immediately let go of Saya's hand and darted forward to drop to his knees to pet Bridge and Tunnel. Kyo laughed at Max's quip and held up the dish of hasperat bites. I'm afraid we're adding to the latke-shaping, he said with a grin. Saya followed her family through the door more sedately, offering a small smile of her own to her friend. We always enjoy joining you for a meal. Kyo was able to cook, and Evekh loves to come see the dogs mostly, I think. She gave her son an amused look. The three wore coordinating outfits - blue, to honor the Jewish holiday - and bronze. It was a subtle, teasing dig at their friendly baseball rivalry. Ever since Judy had taken Saya to her first baseball game, where she'd officially met Kyo, they'd all enjoyed watching games together, even when Judy's New York Yankees were playing the Bajor Solar-Sailors. Blue and bronze were Bajor's colors. Saya had a blue dress with a bronze sash, Kyo a bronze shirt with dark blue pants, and Evekh's shirt and pants were the opposite.

[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer's Quarters, Front Ear Station]Tunnel eagerly greeted Evekh with a sloppy kiss on the cheek, while Bridge offered his ear up for scratches. Now that the doorway was clear, Anna loosened her grip on the dog's collar, and instead patted his fluffy lower back. "Judy can send her complaints to you next week, when I take away her cheese supply," Max joked, as the only person with the authority to actually separate her from her beloved dairy products. "Let's set those down on the table, over here will be fine, unless they're a dessert," Judy directed Kyo, motioning at a spot in between the fried salmon filets and the large plate of potato (yellow) and zucchini (green) latkes. "Do you want to light the candles tonight?" she then offered Max. "Only if you light them with me, Captain," he accepted. She gave him a slight approving chuckle, and then they both realized that he had, accidentally, spilled the beans.

[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Judy's Quarters] Evekh giggled when Tunnel licked him and happily scratched Bridge's ears with both hands. Kyo set the dish on the table and pulled off the cover with a flourish, saying cheerfully, Nope! Not dessert. Saya and I came up with these, mostly for snacking, but also good for contributing to shared meals. Fried hasperat bites.Saya was heading for Evekh to urge him away from the dogs to the bathroom to wash his hands before they ate when what Max had said registered. She froze and raised a questioning brow at Judy. Captain??

[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams, & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer's Quarters]Judy nodded. Now that the cat was out of the bag, she might as well address it. "Yes, Captain, as of this morning. We invited you here to share the news, in fact," she confirmed. "We were going to tell you after we settled down to eat, but I just got a little too excited," Max added sheepishly. "Well, I wouldn't be a Captain without you, so we're even," Judy reassured her hubby. This was very much an awkward rollout, but at least it was among friends. Anna, for her part, stepped into the leadership vacuum. By virtue of the age gaps, she was as used to being the ringleader of her nephews and nieces, as she was to being her brothers' baby sister. That is to say, she could wrangle children quite effectively. "Let's go wash our hands," she directed Evekh. "Bridge drank from the toilet this morning, so he's real dirty."

[MCPO Ozu Saya - Judy's Quarters]
Evekh's slightly ridged nose wrinkled in disgust as he reached for Anna's hand to go with her. As he walked away from the corgis he said, Eww, Bridge. Don't drink toilet water.
Kyo chuckled and called after them, Thanks, Anna!
And congratulations, Judy! I'm excited for you.
Indeed, Saya agreed. What happened to Commodore Perry is unfortunate, but I'm pleased that command has chosen to promote you. While her words were slightly formal, she offered her friend a happy smile. It is well-deserved. Congratulations.

[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer's Quarters]Bridge gave Evekh a slightly confused look. He understood at "ewww" was different from "awww", but he didn't know what "ewww"-worthy thing he had just done. In fact, he thought he was worthy of "awww". Nevertheless, he moved on. There were many things he liked about his mama[fn]Judy[/fn], including the relative ease of licking her calves, so he did that. "Thank you both. I'm looking forward to getting to work, and Michael's looking forward to telling all his classmates when his break ends," Judy herself said, as Anna made sure Evekh washed his hands well, with soap, and then led him back. "Well, let's light the menorah,"[fn]The Menorah (to US Jewry) or Hanukkiah (to Israeli Jewry) is the traditional candelabrum lit on Hanukkah[/fn] Max suggested once they were all present. "Let's," Judy agreed. Max took up the shamash[fn]The shamash is a ceremonial candle on the Menorah used to light all the others[/fn], Judy lit it using a match, and then, both of them holding onto the shamash, they lit the other 5 candles while dueting the blessing. Max, while not himself Jewish (he was not born Jewish, and never converted), had learned the Hebrew language and the holiday blessings over the years. "Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha'olam, asher kidshanu be'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu le'hadlik ner shel Chanukah, Amen."[fn]EN: Blessed are you our Lord, our God the king of the world, who has blessed us with your commandments, and commanded us to light a candle of Hanukkah. This blessing is Hanukkah-specific[/fn] "Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha'olam, she'asah nissim la'avoteinu, ba'yamim ha'hem ba'zman ha'ze, Amen."[fn]EN: Blessed are you our Lord, our God the king of the world, who has performed miracles for our forefathers, in those days at this time. This is a general blessing for Hebrew holidays involving a miracle.[/fn] Unfortunately, while lighting the candles, Judy moved, bumping Bridge away. Anna, unfortunately, was wearing long pants, but wouldn't you know it, Saya had lickable ankles. The dog, who had so recently drunk from the toilet, now sampled these exciting visitor ankles.

[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Judy's Quarters] When Evekh returned from washing his hands, he went to stand between his parents, taking hold of each of their hands. They had explained to him before they left their quarters that he would need to stand or sit quietly during the candle-lighting, but they or Aunt Judy would answer any questions he had at dinner. He only shifted a little impatiently as Uncle Max and Aunt Judy recited the blessing. Evekh was used to religious ceremonies, as his parents had introduced him to both Bajoran and Vulcan rituals since he'd been born. He even enjoyed some of them. Saya felt the warm, wet tongue swiping her ankle and managed to keep her reaction to a quiet gasp and small jerk. She tried to subtly and gently push Bridge away with her foot without disturbing things. Kyo felt the slight jerk she'd made and glanced over with concern. When Saya glanced down, he followed her gaze and compressed his lips to hide a smile at the corgi's antics. When Judy and Max finished the Hebrew blessings, Evekh spoke up quietly and whispered, Pretty, Aunt Judy.

[Cmdr. Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams, & Anna Eastman Williams - First Commanding Officer's Quarters]Bridge wasn't happy about it, but he got the message and moved on. Circling the table, he looked for a patron that would slip him some scraps. He could smell the salmon. After finishing the blessing, the older couple turned their heads in unison to look at Evekh, and smiled. "Thank you, young man," Judy said. "We have many years of practice, Max and I.""20 years now. It'll be 20 years in February," Max added, relishing in the upcoming wedding anniversary with the woman he had thought even then (though she had not) would someday reach the rank of Captain. "Well, let's look at our menu. We have pan-fried salmon, her recipe[fn]read: garlicky[/fn]; the traditional potato latkes and two sour cream options: regular, and spiked with hot sauce; the hasperat bites you brought; and a chopped salad.""What would you like, Evekh?" Judy asked the child. "The rest of you can serve yourselves."
