Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career: Syl never really felt like she had a "life before Starfleet". Everyone in her family had been officers, going as far back as they were able to trace. Her entire life was orchestrated for her to follow suit. In school, she was always pushed to excel in every class, forced into advanced-placement whenever possible, with dire consequences if any of her assignments came back with a grade less than 97%. The stress of such high expectations took its toll on her, and in her early teen years she began to look for extracurricular activities to escape the pressure. This is when she discovered horseback riding, and subsequently her love of speed and the subtle communication between rider and animal. When forced to look ahead at her inevitable Starfleet career, she knew in a heartbeat she wanted to be a pilot.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet): The pressure for success only increased when she entered the Academy at 18. It was also a lot more difficult to maintain the expected top of her class against others who'd had similar education. Her only relief came in the fact that her parents couldn't stop her from dating anymore, and before the end of her first year she was swept away in a whirlwind romance with her classmate Sam. Even though she soon fell in love, she knew the ramifications of falling behind in her classes, so she continued to put her schoolwork as her top priority, and continued to excel as the top of the class.
As they entered their second year, her relationship with Sam began to strain as he started to show disbelief in her scholastic capabilities. Their fights became more frequent as he often accused her cheating, and claimed that he allowed her to beat him in the flying simulations. As infuriating as it was, she never backed down, and decided to just avoid talking about school while they were together. Things were much better then.
That is... until their third year. Sam wouldn't let her avoid the subject so easily anymore, and their verbal fights gradually became more physical. It also no longer centered around school. When she started holding herself back, intentionally dropping her grade to make him happy, he started finding other things to be angry about. Syl withdrew socially, barely speaking to her parents because she simply couldn't handle their lectures on top of his violence, and stopped talking to her friends because he would only accuse her of sleeping around.
By their fourth year at the Academy, Syl felt like she was no longer Sam's girlfriend, but his property. The worst part was she saw no way out, as she had effectively isolated everyone who might have been able to help her. Since she was still being accused of sleeping around, she ended up doing just that, and began sleeping with another classmate – Allen. At first she was just taking solace in someone she felt she was safe with, but a few months later the pregnancy test read positive, and she had a decision to make. Before she could even guess at which man was the father, somehow Sam found out, and simply decided that it was not his.
Syl doesn't remember anything about that final violent assault, only waking up in the Academy infirmary to the doctor telling her that not only had she miscarried, but the damage was so extensive it was unlikely she'd ever be able to conceive again without a lot of medical intervention. As if that wasn't bad enough, her life had been saved when Allen arrived and tried to protect her. Sam attacked him as well, Allen killed him, and was pending court martial. While they eventually determined it was self-defense, Syl still never saw him again. She healed from her injuries and was released to finish out her school year in time to pass her exams, though she was far from being at the top of her class anymore. Her entire reputation had been ruined by the ordeal. Some blamed her, some wanted to hear the gory details. She was tired of the stares, the whispers, the rumors... After graduating, she asked that she be assigned to a far-off post, where no one would know her name and she could start fresh, even if it meant sacrificing time at the helm. They granted her request by assigning her as an alternate helmsman on the USS Mac, to live aboard the Front Ear station when she was not needed on the ship.
Had her life gone the way it was supposed to, she would have hated that decision, and fought tooth-and-nail to get a better posting. But as it was, she was happiest blending in with strangers who would let her forget that the past four years had ever happened.

Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
The wind whipped through her hair, and the ground blurred beneath her. Straight ahead, between the black peaked ears, the meadow stretched on for miles. There was nothing but the whistling of the wind and the pounding of the hooves, the rhythmic rocking motion of the horse that carried her towards the horizon. Nothing else that mattered, and the more ground the covered, the farther they left the past behind. For a moment she felt if she could only reach the horizon... if she could stand in the place where the sun and meadow met, she would finally be free.
=A="Foust to O'Connell."=A=
The voice over the com was loud and startling, and so out of place in this paradise. With a frustrated sigh, Syl straightened and leaned back in the saddle, gradually slowing the horse to a stop before she grit her teeth and tapped the badge on her chest. =A="O'Connell here."=A= The horse fidgeted restlessly, wanting to run more, and she reached forward to pat his shoulder reassuringly.
=A="You're ten minutes late for your appointment, Ensign."=A=
Syl swore beneath her breath, and swiftly dismounted. She had completely forgotten all about her appointment with the physician. =A="I'm so sorry, Doctor, I didn't realize what day it was. I'll be there in five minutes."=A= At least it would be her last time going to this particular infirmary. One final physical to ensure she was fit for active duty - on the other side of Federation space. While she was nervous about her new posting, she was anxious to get the hell away from the Academy. "Computer, end program." she ordered, and the world dematerialized her, leaving her in the middle of the sterile, plain gridded room. She'd have to remember to bring this program with her when she left...
