[NPC - Dato - Universe Ballroom]Dato, free of Niles the crappy hero, turned her attention to this new Academic that entered the room. "They wouldn't be castes if there was movement," she answered meekly. "Then they would be just like your human careers."Dato wasn't aware that Neme was a Vulcan, having failed to notice their ears. [ Ensign Neme, Medical (Regular Academic) (bio) | Universe Ballroom ]"I see," Neme said with a nod. "You should note that I am Vulcan, not human. Our home planet is in the Alpha Quadrant." Neme was never shy about making a correction or adding information. It was rarely a benefit for anyone to operate under inaccurate pretenses. Some cultures preferred gentle delivery of said corrections, but Neme rarely made any attempt. "Caste systems have existed on the human home planet but they do not any longer. No such social control has existed on Vulcan. Vulcan society is egalitarian. To what caste to you belong?" Judith Eastman (Dato)

[NPC - Yatin - Universe Ballroom]Yatin was, of course, not surprised, as he knew Charlie Fox would be a prickly fruit. "The Knowledge Building was built entirely using robots, about 300 of your years ago. It's very dangerous, as you know, to build scaffolding for workers this high above the ground," he seemed to evade the question, but in fact he wasn't evading, only bragging. "But I know you want to talk about the Kurjarians, so let's. You think we use them as slaves, because that's what Jeren tells you, but if you compare the so-called free tribesmen, to Kurjarian workers in our society, you can see that by joining their hands with the Caldonian Technocracy, the Kurjarians improve their lot dramatically. They have cities, with running water and EPS power systems, and stable roofs over their heads that don't fall apart in storms."There was a course for Caldonian diplomats in how to obfuscate when confronted about the Kurjarians, and Yatin had taught that course. [Lt Shavan Th’zhaar & T’Laara - Universe Ballroom, Caldonia] One by one the rest of the delegation received their caste assignments, not all so fortunate as the pair of scientists. Meanwhile, T’Laara considered Charlie’s words as she looked around the extravagant ballroom. “I believe that for once, I understand the feeling.” Moments later they were approached by a Caldonian diplomat. "I see. It is an impressive feat of engineering, to be sure," she answered with stiff politeness. The beautiful city, and its technological marvels, did pull at Shavan's curiosity too. It just wasn’t enough. He had never met a Caldonian before this trip, but had very little regard for a society with so much prejudice and slavery. He had seen enough of both of those things. The Caldonian hadn’t spoken to directly him- no doubt it pained them to have to admit that someone of his species could be “academic”. So he cut in with a honeyed smile at Yatin. “And they would never have any of those things otherwise?” [Charlie Fox - Universe Ballroom, Knowledge Building, Caldonia]Yatin was as practiced and composed as she'd expected, but the company he found himself in wasn't the kind one could easily plamause with talk of sunshine, rainbows and cross-culture kumbayas. Charlie listened politely to the words the Caldonian was speaking, though she wondered why he was bothering to waste his breath on her. She had to hand it to him, he was keen. Shavan cut right to the heart of the matter with a well-timed and placed question. She arched a brow and looked back at Yatin, wondering as to how he would field it. "And otherwise the Caldonians would never have those precious minerals on the Kurjarian lands," she added helpfully, before a brief exchange nearby caught her attention. She frowned as another uppity slaver approached Josh and presented... a medal? Taken aback, Charlie blinked several times, trying to make sense of what was happening. Eventually the Captain took the decoration and slipped it into her purse, while Josh himself looked on, the picture of pissed off. "What is that medal for?" She asked of Yatin, voice betraying her suspicion.

She didn't truly care where they placed her. It was actually rather apropos with her non-commissioned background in Starfleet. She clasped her left wrist with the other hand to keep from continuing to rub her arms as she turned to enter the ballroom, only to come to a stop when she was approached by a rather gregarious Kurjarian. ' Greetings, Hetav,' Saya responded levelly. ' I am Ozu Saya, chief engineer.' She thought it would be best to give her title rather than rank under these circumstances. She wasn't certain if the Kurjarians would hold the same contempt for their military structure, but since they were out of uniform, it was just easier. ' I would be grateful for your guidance. I have little experience with caste systems, though my father's people on Bajor used to have one.' Hetav announced immediately, all but pouncing on the opportunity for conversation that the Skilled Worker was providing. "We can go to the Skilled Worker table, where we will meet with others. A lively bunch!" He said suggestively, not once stopping to consider that his guest might not consider that a good thing. The former Chief gestured toward a table in the far corner of the room, some distance away from the Academics. In fact, even at a shout, they would likely be unable to communicate from one group to another. "Would you tell me about your Bajor and your castes? The Caldonians provide us with so much, including this wonderful system we have. Everyone knows their place! It is easy to find." He looked around at the others as he continued his pitch to the Chief Engineer, but to anyone watching, his enthusiasm for his oppressors seemed genuine. "And the Federation, all of your people here, they seem unable to find their places right now."

[Universe Ballroom – Knowledge Building – Caldonia] Johnathan Hunt entered the building a little later than anticipated. It took him a while to wear something casual as he was looking forward to wearing his dress whites. The benefit of a uniform is that he did not have to worry about the fashion and how much it has changed over the years. As he entered the building, he tried to remember everything. For the last couple of days, he tried to study the different races and political situations in preparation for the mission, especially about the Caledonians. The man kept quiet as he was unsure about himself. He was still in the process of learning different patients’ medical charts and allergic reactions if he needed to do emergency surgery in the away team. The man walked into the room and observed multiple people having conversations. He wondered for a second why he was assigned for this mission. He then realized that there were not many Medical Doctors with some knowledge in politics on paper he might be a good fit. However, the reality was different. He was not the same person rather the universe changed, and he has not. A waitress came by and offered what looked like a drink, and Jonathan politely declined. He had no idea what that drink was, and he was also on duty. He was relieved he highly doubted that either his skills as a surgeon or politics would be needed. First, he highly doubted anything bad would happen in a diplomatic incident, and this might be a way to ease him back in service. Second, his political skills would be subpar to everyone else. He looked at individuals and headed to the Clerk. He gave him the questionnaire that included his background and the field of medicine. He appreciated the irony that on paper is Medical License Number was old by Federation Standards. He handed the PADD and waited for his assigned. Indirectly he hoped that it was not vital for the mission. "Skilled worker."
The day was long, this work was rough, and the Caldonian clerk had little mind for curiosity.

Terrorism was, as most species held, bad.

[ Lt Joshua Niles Walkway -> Universe Ballroom, Caldonia ]
His stance might not have been the most diplomatic, no matter how hard he had tried to not spit out precisely what he thought about the Caldonian caste system, the way naked force was what was used to keep the lower castes from getting uppity, and just how disgusted he was that this woman was giddy just for meeting someone who'd shot a desperate man in a split-second life and death moment. However, it would seem that the orders that woman had been given were so inflexible, that 'no' was not an answer she could accept for she simply repeated herself, the words twisting the Lieutenant's stomach even more the second time he'd heard them. However, the Captain did come to his rescue and accepted the medal on his behalf... only to dump it in her purse. And then, she gave him more of her advice. So sometimes one had to go along to get along? He certainly understood that; hell, it was often the name of the game when one was choosing to wear the uniform. However, there were times when such was simply too unpalatable. "Captain, I..."Niles took a deep breath. He was getting flustered, and unfortunately this was not an event he could run away from to go and get hammered with a certain journalist, or go hide on the Bridge to take the watch. He was stuck dirtside until the job was done. "Just... thank you. At least now they're happy it's been accepted, and I'm not going to be paraded like some prize goat with that chunk of metal on my coat; which is the last thing we need if we mean to convince the Kurjarians and... lower castes that Starfleet isn't just some imported jackboots for the Caldonians."Slowly, he shook his head. He had no idea what course of action would be best at this time, especially since retreat was not an option. "Any suggestions, before I head to my table and deal with my... fellow soldier-caste, Ma'am?" [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Universe Ballroom]Judy clasped the purse with both hands at once, feeling the weight of the medal. Knowing her luck, and her carpal tunnel syndrome, she'd be doing paperwork with her wrist splint for the next few days. And on that topic of overly rigid things... "The best advice I could give you is to loosen up just a bit. The way you make an impact here is by connecting with the locals, and stilted procedural formality only gets you so far. Within reason, do what feels right, even if it's not what they taught you at the Academy," the Captain advised. She was no Jim Kirk, and she didn't want to produce a batch of Jims Kirk on her crew, but nor was slavish adherence to protocol the best path forward. "Now, go, mingle!"She walked off, towards the other academics.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia - Universe Ballroom]So the actual factors for the caste decision were far more complex. That only made the young Ensign even more curious about the details. Before she could say anything else, however, the judge had started walking back towards her assigned table, and gestured for Syl to follow. Her face paled slightly as she looked back over her shoulder at the general area she had been pointed to by the clerk, certain that she wasn't allowed to be at the same table as her. But she certainly didn't want to know what would happen if she didn't do what the elderly woman told her to. Swallowing back an apologetic protest, she quickened her pace to catch up to the judge, only managing to the catch the last part of her sentence - something about being kept out?

[NPC - Ad-Ass[fn]Short for Administrative Assistant. Get your head out of the gutter![/fn] Xoteak - Universe Ballroom]Xoteak was nervous, extremely so. He was about to do the riskiest thing of his life, and yet he had no choice but to do it. He had his thing to say, and he had to say it. He had to. He saw Charlie Fox with Yatin, his boss. He also saw the volatile judge, and the shiny Captain (whom Yatin believed to have pro-Caldonian sympathies), all dangerous. Thus, he approached clan Chief Baram, Matt Harmon, and the Andorian, remarkably timid for an (Inferior) Academic. "Sirs, ma'am, I would like to speak with you," he whispered, almost quivering. [LCDR Matthew Harmon & Chief Baram - Universal Ballroom] Harmon wasn't sure what to think of Baram. He recognised Clan Kavar as the clan Jeren led. Presumably Jeren's incarceration had led to Baram succeeding him. He wondered what Jeren would have to say about negotiating with the Caldonians. Likely he would have opposed it, unless they had some leverage and ability to effect meaningful change, which didn't seem like the case here today. He was surprised that Kova had been assigned to the Kurjarian caste. He hadn't realised that they would be putting people in that category. However, it did potentially provide an opportunity for Kova to find out more about their situation. Unfortunately, that would mean he would need to work with Kova. Baram pondered Kova's words, about in some ways the Kurjarians being less oppressed. It was easy for someone who did not suffer under the apartheid-like system to philosophise, but for those who lived it they hardly felt free. Still, she seemed to have her heart in the right place. Maybe they'd made a Kurjarian out of her yet. "Perhaps," he nodded diplomatically. They were then approached by a Caldonian...an Academic based on his attire. "How can we help you?" he asked politely. He hated them and everything they had done to his people. But for now he had to play the part. The good tribesman. Civil and obedient. But one day they would have their moment, and their freedom. "I'm but a lowly manager, it would be my honour to converse with my betters," Harmon replied sarcastically, his arms folded. [NPC - Ad-Ass Xoteak - Universe Ballroom]Xoteak had expected this kind of reaction, but it hurt him nonetheless. "I'm a dissident, gentlemen," he whispered. "I'm also the liaison for Starfleet's shrew-release mission, which means I can help you hide it, if you send someone extra along. You can chronicle the mines, the slums, all the horrors, and show the Federation how bad it is for Chief Baram's people."From there, the politics would take hold. In an election year, the Federation President would have to retaliate against the Caldonians to save his own ass. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Universe Ballroom, Caldonia] Baram didn't seem to object to Kova's views, but he didn't encourage them either. It wasn't as if Kova were looking for his approval. Besides, the opportunity to discuss it further escaped them as they were joined by someone else. The man introduced himself as a dissident that had also served as the liaison for the shrew-release mission. Kova rolled her eyes slightly at the mention of those shrew. She was still of the mind that they should have just gotten a new station. After all, those shrew droppings weren't exactly potpourri. Xoteak's offer, however, was an interesting one. He claimed that he could help show the Federation the true that had befallen Baram's people. At the mention of it, Kova's eyes first went to the Chief. Why had he not been the one to bring it up? He didn't strike Kova as the type of man that was ashamed in any way of his identity. Her eyes then moved back to Xoteak. Why exactly had he decided to share this insight... with Kova and Harmon and not anyone else? Perhaps he felt it was safe to do so in Baram's presence. Or perhaps he knew of Harmon's reputation. The Andorian quickly dismissed the latter. Anyone knowing of Harmon's reputation would have avoided the man altogether. Besides, Charlie was a better candidate to break this type of news to the Federation. Although, that could be motive for the Caldonians to engage with Charlie so fervently... keep her too busy to snoop around. Of course, Kova's eyes were now trained on the Intelligence officer. This was going to be his call. He was the Intelligence officer. It was time to see if he'd live up to the name. She wasn't going to weigh in on this decision, but felt they could use more information. Perhaps the man's motives. The best way to get information from people, was to act as if you cared about them. "Would doing so put you in jeopardy?" she asked.

It was going to take all of her skills to maintain composure if all those of the caste she'd been assigned did the same. She was out of practice. When he asked about the Bajoran castes, Saya had to actually think about it. She hadn't learned about it until she'd joined Starfleet, her father having never spoken of it when she was a child. As such, she actually knew very little, not having thought it worth her time to investigate further. ' Bajoran castes, called d'jarras, were based upon one's family and determined one's occupation. When Cardassia occupied Bajor, the d'jarras were set aside in unity against our oppressors. Once Bajor was free, we did not return to the d'jarras. Our society had changed too dramatically.' Saya cut herself off abruptly, realizing that she was very close to outright criticism of caste systems. She'd delivered the short explanation in her best Vulcan monotone, but she couldn't keep it up. ---------- Tag Charlie Fox

So in this matter she did not comment, but observed the conversation closely. However, she looked around as another voice spoke, and T’Laara found herself facing another Vulcan. “This man was just telling us about how well they believe their society functions, and how important and mutually beneficial it is to those in different roles.”

[Capt. [ Lt Joshua Niles Walkway -> Universe Ballroom, Caldonia ] Well, that was advice Niles had not expected, not only to relax but to also step away from protocol. That was the last thing he could have expected the Captain to say, but if she said it, well, it was worth taking under serious advisement at the bare minimum. However, he had clear instructions to not start colouring too far outside the lines. And with that order to go and mingle, she walked away and left the Lieutenant with almost more questions than he had before... and no real clue what he should be doing. But, mingle he would, and his meandering brought him towards Commander Harmon. Now, the Intelligence Officer wasn't his favourite person in the world, and he had a clear impression that Harmon was amazed the Tactical Officer could put his boots on the right feet on a daily basis. However, as of right now, he needed to mingle, and if he could stay away from other members of the soldier caste for as long as possible, he certainly would. And, the man he was conversing with was wearing onrnaments not unlike those that had been worn by Jeren... If he could make contact there, then maybe, just maybe, he might have a chance to shake off that 'hero' business. "Sir, and, Clan Chief, I presume?" he said by way of introduction along with a slight inclination of his head, including for the other Caldonian who was present, unsure of his status.

Judith Eastman [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & The Hon. Judge Estelle Roth - Universe Ballroom]Estelle shook her head. "I thought you had fitness requirements at the Academy," she admonished the Ensign, who had fallen behind. "As I was saying, it's all about dominance."At this point, Judy walked up to them. "Bubbe[fn]Yiddish term for a grandmother[/fn], are you scaring my Ensigns again?" the Captain asked. "We're just having a conversation, blintz'ke[fn]Blintzes are basically Jewish crepes. 'ke' is a general-purpose Yiddish diminutive[/fn]," Estelle replied, dismissing her granddaughter's concern. "You'll have to forgive Judge Roth; she's used to her law clerks. They get paid to debate her," Judy said to the Ensign, trying to shift directions from her grandmother using an early childhood nickname for her. Estelle sat down, as did Judy.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia - Universe Ballroom]A soft blush crossed her cheeks as the senior made a comment about fitness requirements. Of course they did, and of course she met them, she wasn't even out of breath after catching up. "I'm sorry ma- Your Honor," she corrected herself, before none other than Captain Eastman joined them. Syl stood a little straighter, turning an appreciative smile to the other woman. This was her chance... and would likely be her only chance to get a feel for the Captain's thoughts and motivations regarding this mission. Something substantial to give the Admiral when they got back. And of course, her mind suddenly went blank. The two women sat, and Syl hesitated for a moment before doing the same. If the Caldonians got upset about her being at the wrong table, well... It wouldn't be too bad with the Captain there, right?

[LCDR Matthew Harmon & Chief Baram - Universal Ballroom] After Harmon's sarcastic line the Caldonian who approached seemed to be a little hurt. Not that Harmon cared in the slightest, he clearly had gotten one of the better sides of the disgusting caste system. Then, he spoke, or rather whispered anxiously. He was claiming to be a 'dissident'. It was interesting indeed. Harmon had struggled to find ways to recruit spies and informants on Caldonia without arousing suspicion, and if this was true this man could be his way in. However, there was of course an equally likely chance that he was an agent provocateur or other ill motived actor. Generally, Harmon would have done extensive due diligence before proceeding, however this was no ordinary situation. It occurred to him that even if he was some bad faith actor trying to damage these negotiations, Harmon simply did not care. He would be perfectly content to let them implode. His career would quite possibly suffer further, or end, but that was a problem for later. After all, one had to take a stand at some point. Harmon felt that tacit support for war crimes was a reasonable line in the sand to draw. As Harmon contemplated how to respond, Baram spoke. "Be careful. There are ears and eyes everywhere," he hushed, his eyes subtly darting around the room to see if anyone appeared to be paying attention to them. They were then approached by Lieutenant Niles. Baram had not met the man, however he knew who he was. "I am," he said with a standoffish tone, "Thanks to your actions, I believe," he said, his tone making it impossible to tell if he had a positive or negative view of Niles' actions against Jeren that had led to Baram succeeding him. "Our Caldonian host here, I didn't catch his name, was suggesting that a group of us take leave and release the shrews," Harmon told Niles. He had decided he would trust, or at least go along with the Caldonian. He would need to bring a team along. Charlie was a natural choice, it wouldn't feel right abandoning her after she helped convince him to join her crusade. Kova had a suitable respect for rules, regulations, and orders, and as much as he disliked her personally, she was confident. Niles on the other hand, he wasn't so sure about. He could be useful, but he was also uptight and stubborn, and there would be enough of that on Harmon's hypothetically A-Team. He also shot Jeren, so there was that elephant in the room. "Not sure if we should bring you along. Wouldn't want any more Kurjarian's getting shot," he prodded, hoping to elicit some sort of reaction that could help him make a decision. "I'm not sure the skirt will suit the terrain though," he teased, his tone appearing sincere, despite him knowing full well it was a kilt. "Your legs look very nice today though, if I may be so bold." As terrible as this mission and this situation was, Harmon recognised you had to take the opportunities, to tease that is, where they arose.

[Universe Ballroom – Knowledge Building – Caldonia] Hunt nodded as he heard his assignment as a skilled worker and merely nodded and responded, “Thank you.” He began walking away and thought of the political ramifications of his assignment. As random as it might be for them, the assignment indicates for him the priority of the civilization. These priorities would also dictate their technology levels and priority. It was the basic political theory. They don’t consider Medicine as academic instead of skill would inform him that their medical technology might not be as advanced in other areas. “ Interesting,” He spoke to himself as he continued to walk. Jonathan has the bad habit of sometimes speaking out loud when he was thinking and observing. It was an issue that sometimes would land him in trouble. He tried not to say much as sometimes when he was thinking of diagnosis and actions, he might say the wrong thing as he is going through a checklist. [Skilled Worker Table] The doctor approached the skilled worker's table, and as expected, it was a little bit more rustic than his academics counterpart. According to his research, he was not surprised that individuals of his class were given the bare minimum to survive. He wondered about their medical infrastructure and their larger portion or how they took care of their need. He observed the two individuals. One of them he recognized from his research of medical files. "Good Evening, Master Chief Saya. Pleasure Meeting you. I'm Dr. Hunt, the new Medical Doctor. But Johnathan it's fine" said Hunt. He gave her a diplomatic nod. He turned his attention to the other individual whom he did not recognize. " Pleasure meeting you, I'm Doctor Hunt and whom do I have the honor of addressing?" Hunt said has he extended his hand for a formal greeting. He observed the location of the table, and it was near the back away from the Academic. Almost as if they were doing a favor by letting low-class individuals such as himself in. Some Doctors would have found the situation to be infuriating, especially some of his Medical School classmates. Hunt, on the other hand, was happy to be in the back. He was there as merely support in case he is needed. Looking at the room, the only time he would be needed is if someone had a heart attack and choke on their food. Tag Ozu Saya Charlie Fox

[ Lt Joshua Niles Walkway -> Universe Ballroom, Caldonia ] Well, that was advice Niles had not expected, not only to relax but to also step away from protocol. "Of course I'll be in danger. I'd be tried for treason here, which is why I'd like to live with the free tribesmen, or get asylum in the Federation," he answered the Andorian first. He ignored Joshua Niles (both his track record and his magnificent legs) for now and addressed the others with a revelation to reinforce his credibility. "I was the one that leaked the Kaa torture memos. I am Xoteak, codename Serlat[fn]An ancient Kurjarian word, referring to an extended speech meant to delay action, much like, in our era, the filibuster[/fn]," he whispered. The Kaa torture memos were a series of secret documents outlining particularly vicious torture techniques, and the best way to spin them to the general public so that no one would know.
