Name of Species: Caldonians
Physiology:
Caldonians are humanoid in appearance, and typically stand over six feet tall. They are characterized by their large craniums with a raised bony framework shaped like a perpendicular theta.
Culture:
The Caldonians view the pursuit of knowledge as the most important thing. Their society and culture is characterized by a highly stratified caste system where a complex process of determining an individual's “worth” which in turn determines an individual's standing in society. An individual’s “worth” is calculated by a number of tests and trials that a child must undergo at various stages of their life. There are four trials at age 5, 10, 15, and 30, each one streaming the child. The First Trial determines if a child is worth educating further. They will be streamed either into a “Worker” or “Academic” education. The Second Trial sees them divided into either “Skilled Workers”, “Soldiers”, or “Slaves” for those educated as workers, while the Academics begin to be streamed into different fields. The Third Trials see the Worker Classes assigned to their roles in society and the completion of their education. The Academic Classes get assigned as either Inferior or Regular Academics. The Fourth Trial sees eligible candidates compete for promotion either to Managers (for Skilled workers and a small number of slaves), or High Academic or Ruling Class (For Regular Academics).
The castes are:
Superior Academics - These are the most respected and supposedly intelligent Caldonians. They are reclusive and according to state propaganda spend their time contemplating the great secrets of the universe. They are rarely seen or heard of, and it has been over 100 years since the Superior Academics have made a statement or intervened in society. Should they wish to exercise it, they have absolute power over Caldonians.
High Academics - These are some of the most skilled academics on Caldonia. They are the foremost experts in their fields and enjoy many privileges. As they are seen as having dedicated their life to their field and as such bring great knowledge to the Calondian people they are essentially allowed to get away with whatever they like. They are untouchable by the law and even the Ruling Class. They are granted essentially whatever they want. They tend to live on massive estates which they control almost as a personal fiefdom and employ many from the lower castes. They are free to treat their inferiors as well or as badly as they want.
Ruling Class - Officially, the Ruling Class is appointed by the Superior Academics to govern Caldonia in their name. They are respected but not as much as High Academics who enjoy many extralegal privileges.
Regular Academics - These people are experts in their fields and are greatly respected. They are granted considerable material wealth and estates.
Inferior Academics - These are people who are viewed as intelligent and as making worthy contributions to society, however they are not experts and as such usually are found working below Academics or High Academics. They tend to live comfortably, but it varies depending on who their superior is.
Managers - These are essentially the managerial and administrative caste. They are given the material needs to survive well enough but are not respected.
Skilled Workers - These are workers with some sort of skill or trade. They are only really given the bare minimum needed to survive.
Soldiers - The soldier class is viewed very poorly as war and violence are viewed as barbaric and vile. However, they are essential as they maintain the social order and ensure the Kurjarians and slaves remain repressed.
Slaves - Anyone who has not been educated in some sort of skill is enslaved to work as labourers. They are viewed as slightly above Kurjarians as Kurjarians are seen to be biologically inferior to even the lowest of Caldonians.
Kurjarians - The Kurjarians are found in many lesser roles similar to their Caldonian counterparts. A few work similar to “managers”, but most are either workers or slaves. Some also live as nomads in the mountains, living life their traditional way and practicing their religion and culture beyond the reaches of the Caldonian state.
History:
TBD
Other important/useful information:
Their planet is shared by another sentient species, the Kurjarians, who they exploit and oppress (See Kurjarian file when that one is written).
