[ Lt Joshua Niles - Research Blvd ]And of course, the answer Niles got was... no real answer at all. Of course he'd done some reading about Caldonian culture; he was one who believed in preparation in everything he did. And, of course, Yatin defended his stratified culture, with what he reckoned were even logical arguments. However, that so-called logic he was presenting was simply to justify the position of privilege he was sitting in and preventing it from being upset at all. "As you told Ensign Neme, the castes live together, with their respective levels of personal resources and free time. Which decreases the lower down the chain you go. With the first tests being at the age of five, how can the child of slaves or Kurjarians working extremely long and arduous hours, who consider themselves lucky to go to bed with a full stomach and serviceable clothes on their backs have an effective ability to compete against children of high scholars such as yourself, who can afford to hire tutors and devote time, resources and energy to supporting their children's early development?"True, Niles was from the upper crust of society back home and he understood that he'd been given advantages that many did not have. But there was also a safety net where there was no real risk of utter destitution to the point of survival being threatened on all but the most outlying Federation colonies and worlds. Which meant that even labourers would have a chance to have one parent stay home with their child, and opportunities to have them enrolled in good early development centers regardless of household income. "Also, your caste system and its trials means that anyone is just one bad day from being consigned to a life as a slave, or at best to knowing they will never be allowed to reach their full potential? How is that not a waste when a five year old child who has the potential to be a warp physicist or medical researcher is going to be going through life as a slave simply because they had a bad day, and will not be given nearly as much a chance to excel at his next round of testing?"Starfleet Academy was one of the toughest schools in Federation space, right up there with the Vulcan Science Academy. But do-or-die, excel-or-be-forever-mediocre conditions did not exist within Starfleet. Remedial training and ongoing professional development were the norm, so anyone may improve themselves and advance if they so desired. Even those who had a rocky start early in their career. But even reprobates and screw-ups had a chance to pay their debt to the service, or take their licks, and bounce back towards successful and potentially illustrious careers, even commands of their own. Not so much with the Caldonians... "And of course, there is a large fraction of the planetary population that is deliberately and systematically denied the chance to prove they are capable of anything more than what you consider the lowest of tasks. How is that not wasting potential?" [NPC - Yatin - Research Blvd, Caldonia]Yatin chuckled. "You always have a comeback, don't you?" he asked Niles rhetorically, seeming to deflect with sarcasm, before taking another rhetorical turn. "There are many people who come here wanting to 'expose' us. You think our caste system is reprehensible, and you've come to that decision without knowing it, or how it works. You don't know us, but you preach to us anyway; you don't actually care about my answer, or about our society, only about making yourself feel superior. The least you could have done was read about our school system, because the answer to your question is in your mission briefing, that I assume your peers read."On his soapbox, his baritone voice conveying hurt and insult, Yatin sermonized, glaring at Niles and using the Caldonian languages' second-person singular, not plural, pronouns. [Chief Baram - Research Boulevard] Baram nodded as the Federation Captain commented on Yaltin’s skill at giving non-answers to any uncomfortable question. She had been hinting for a while now that her sympathies were with the Kurjarians. Whether or not that would translate into any tangible, meaningful support would be another question. Suddenly, a Caldonian man approached quickly, yelling at Baram. “What are you doing here, qireji,” he said, using a slur often used against Kurjarians, that translates roughly to filth or grime. He then begun shoving and pushing Baram, as he continued to hurl abuse. “Your kind doesn’t belong her! Go back to your caves!” As the man continued his assault, Baram’s two companions leaped to his defence and tried to subdue the attacker. A Kurjarian laying their hands on an academic was a crime punishable by death. “Leave him, leave him!” Baram pleaded, fearful for the fate of his men. Obediently they released him. He then noticed Yaltin who he looked at, expecting for him to intervene. “They touched me! You all saw that! They must be punished!” He protested. Before he could bring his offended lecture home, Yatin was disrupted by the altercation with the Kurjarians. He would have to land this one smoothly. "Report this to law enforcement. We're on High Academic business," he commanded, letting his very senior caste be the bludgeon with which he brushed this issue aside. "Now, where were we? The domes?" he said to the half-Vulcan one, trying to move on as though the incident hadn't happened.

[ T’Laara - Research Boulevard] T’Laara listened while the chief engineer posed some fascinating questions about the domes and the Caldonian species. She wondered what the answers would be. “I am interested in hearing more about the construction of the domes as well. Perhaps we could learn something that could be applied on a smaller scale to improving the hydroponics systems on the station.” Before she could say any more, however, there was a commotion up ahead. She instantly stepped back, attention caught by the sudden altercation. The violence of which appeared to discredit Yatin’s otherwise logically worded argument. It was barbaric, but she found herself unable to look away. Temporarily abandoning the subject of the domes, she instead asked Yatin “What is your law enforcement going to do about it?”

[Research Blvd.] Hunt listened to Judy and also observed Yatin’s reaction to Lt. Nilles questioning. If it were up to him he would stop the current interrogation format as it would be defensive. Jonathan merely nodded as Judy implored him to ask his question again and wondered if he could phrase it better. He understood that his phrasing might not have been the best but it was a quote from basic tactics from Starfleet Academy. Hunt tried to clear his throat for a second and though how to get information in the most non-confrontational way. Instead of raising an issue Hunt thank Yatin for their hospitality. “ I don’t believe you have been thanked for hosting us this morning Mr. Yatin. I apologize if our questions about the caste system might appear ignorant. I do however have a question about your transportation and medical services. Are resources distributed by a Centralized or Regional system? Furthermore, who makes the decision on the resources are distributed? If I intrude because I am a skilled worked, but is there any way that I can see those numbers. I know I am not an academic or passed the same aptitude test, however you will understand that me asking this is a formality. I am sorry I am just merely doing my job to the best of my skills. I don’t think we need academics observing me, as I don’t want to intrude on their research” . Hunt said looking down. He wanted to portray that he was unsure and merely going by the motions. Hopefully he will be given access with some computers that he can do some analysis especially on the Healthcare front. Tag Judith Eastman

[ Ensign Neme, Medical (bio) ]It was impossible to ignore the scuffle; Neme hadn't seen how it began and it was de-escalated quickly. Their tour guide Yatin seemed completely unphased but Neme quickly gathered this matter was far from over - Neme had read the mission reports thoroughly and knew about the Caldonian's strict corporal punishment policy. It were clearly ineffective deterrants and Neme could only surmise the reason it continued had more to do with vengeance than with keeping peace. It was a shame but unless their commanding officers chose to supercede Starfleet protocols, it was none of their business. When Yavin insisted they move along, Neme did not proceed instead staying with the tour group who were not yet finished addressing the incident. T'Laara sought more information and Cheif Saya attempted to intervene. Neme arched an eyebrow. This would not bode well for the negotiations.

He flashed his smile, as though their incessant nonsense wasn't getting to him, and dealt with it. "Our legal system is similar to yours, in that anyone can report an incident, and our impartial arbiters will resolve it in accordance to our laws," he explained, omitting the fact that caste standing played a strong role in their legal codes. Judy looked around her crew with a grave face. It was shameful, even tragic, but there wasn't anything they could do. "It's not our place to intervene," she said to the crew, and then turned to Yatin. "However, I will be keeping tabs on this case, to see the Caldonian legal system in action."Translation: don't think we'll just look the other way if you disappear Baram. "We welcome your scrutiny, Dr. Eastman," Yatin answered, translation: message received, you win this one. Judy nodded, accepting the use of her academic title instead of her rank as a compliment (as, to a Caldonian, it surely was). "Our medical research ward is right there," Yatin pointed out a building, brushing the whole issue aside. "You can explore it, if you'd like, or continue with the tour.""I'll be going," Estelle announced, looking to the two physicians on the away team.

[Chief Baram - Research Boulevard] Baram was pleasantly surprised that some of the Federationers seemed to speak, at least a little. Seeing Yaltin squirm might have been enjoyable if he knew it would effect anything tangible. Everyday Kurjarians faced treatment like this, and worse. Yaltin just wanted to shove everything out of sight for this trip so the Federationers wouldn’t feel too bad about what they tacitly condoned. He scoffed as Yaltin mentioned the equality of the laws, but said nothing as he followed the group. “They should have hit you,” he whispered to Hetav. [Research Blvd] Hunt let Captain Eastman deal with the commotion as it was not his place to question their “guest”. While he agreed with the unfairness of the situation it was not their mission to correct their wrongs or install their values unto them. The Doctor nodded as he observed the Medical Ward. He plans on using the data there to find out more about their culture. It was obvious to him that Yatin was on his best behavior and most of the things that they would observe were pre-planned. As Estelle mentioned that she wanted to join. Hunt slightly bowed and responded “ It would be an honor to have the pleasure of your company your honor”, He smiled as they were allowed to see the Medical Data. He already knew what inquiries he wanted to conduct and they would not be hostile. He wanted to see hospitals and Medical locations with demographic information. The Medical Data would also show any anomalies such as higher amounts of patients than the population. He began walking and nodded to his fellow physician. “ Doctor,” He said as he walked confidently to the Medical Ward. “I t hink the highest one in their Caste should do most of the talking. What are you? Your Honor? Also, what are you, Doctor? I am considered a skilled worker.” Hunt inquired as he was ok being in the backseat. He walked to the general direction and waited to see their highest rank individual by Caldonia to ask passage. Tag Kaya Som Judith Eastman

[ T’Laara - Research Boulevard] T’Laara nodded to Ozu, and then to Hetav. “Greetings,” she said politely when Ozu introduced her. “I do not see what there is to forgive. The infestation of shrews aboard our station was hardly your fault.” Nor was she truly of the Academic caste, as she was not Caldonian, nor did she plan to take up residence there. It was, however, nice to be appreciated. [...] [ MCPO Ozu Saya - Research Blvd.] Yet again, Saya had to clamp down hard on a smile as Hetav misunderstood Dr. Hunt. It had been amusing watching them the previous evening, but now that she was in front of a full Vulcan, all of Saya's old insecurities resurfaced, and she felt she had to maintain her own Vulcan facade. ' Indeed,' she finally managed levelly. ' There is no reason for you to apologize unless you personally placed the shrews aboard a ship and sent them to the station.' As they continued down the street, Saya took the opportunity to look up at the dome that protected the city from the harsh desert elements and thought of her own questions to add to the others'. ' Yatin, I would like to learn more about the engineering aspect of your biodomes. I am also curious as to the effect living in these domes has had on your people. Have you adapted from living in the deserts?' [Hetav, Ex-Chief of Clan Relar - Research Blvd.]"You are both too gracious," Hetav said, his tone reverential when both females encouraged him not to take blame for the shrews. "It is such an honour to consider your people future friends."Conversation turned to more technical things, which Hetav once again tried to ignore. "That is many, many words," he muttered to himself, eyes on the soldier who had shot Jeren. He saw no need for so many words when so much less would do the job just as nicely. Too many words was the realm of the Caldonians, and Hetav had no interest in tying himself up with unnecessary speeches and their meanings. He did not fail to notice the scuffle between the Caldonian citizen, and Baram. He hummed a merry tune to himself as Yatin dealt with the situation decisively. He scoffed as Yaltin mentioned the equality of the laws, but said nothing as he followed the group. “They should have hit you,” he whispered to Hetav. In some ways he was worse than Yaltin, a spineless traitor. "You should know better, Baram," Hetav said, his voice no less friendly than it had been before when speaking to their guests. He wasn't completely without sense; the former clan chief knew what his fellows thought of him. That was somehow less important than what they were achieving here, on this walking tour. "You act like the young, newly birthed, witless and blind, flailing around in circles and walking into rocks. The things said to us today, and yesterday, and last year - they are no new thing."

[ T’Laara - Research Boulevard] It was clear that no one’s questions would get them anywhere. In the interest of maintaining diplomacy, there was little else to do except let the matter go. After the incident they had just witnessed, it was more difficult to do so, but T’Laara at least had no further comments about the caste system or about the altercation. The others had already voiced enough objections similar to what she was thinking. She stood stiffly and watched the Kurjarians and Yatin for a moment. Forcing the unease from her mind, she tried to focus back on the subject of the tour. The medical labs probably were genuinely fascinating, but only the first stop. Despite the problems with their society, or maybe even because of them, she decided to see more. “Very well. I will continue on the tour and see what else your city has to offer.” She would stay with the group wherever they ended up going. Judith Eastman (Yatin), soft tags to the group

[ Lt Joshua Niles - Research Blvd. ]And of course Yatin would respond in such a way. The man would never acknowledge the system that had seen him rise high was not calculated to allow anyone much of a chance to exceed the caste of their birth, or of the wasted potential should anyone fail a test and therefore be denied any chance at remedial training or further development in their field. The man was, after all, at the pinnacle of their society and enjoying its benefits... And he did not seem to appreciate someone whom he'd assigned one of the lowest possible castes challenging his views at all. And what did not help was seeing how a Kurjarian, a Clan Chief no less, was assaulted right then and there, and his aggressor was demanding that it be the men who stopped him from beating his victim be punished! That alone was a complete reversal of what constituted civilized behaviour in Niles' eyes, and it had been the Master Chief who had put words to his thoughts, in such a way that he could not have been able to match at this point. For, regardless of Starfleet's doctrine of teaching its members to be open-minded and try not to judge other cultures by Federation standards, well, it was becoming more and more difficult to consider the Caldonians to be no better than slavers. And to think the notion of handing them quantum torpedo technology, even possibly Federation membership in spite of their violation of the requirement for total population equality rights were being floated in order to keep access to mineral deposits, the notion was entirely abhorrent to the Lieutenant. However, Captain Eastman put an end to any notion of further objecting to what was going on, but he knew the tone she had been using, the tone of someone who, in her person as a Starfleet commanding officer, was a representative of the Federation whose recommendations on report would carry a lot of weight in the final analysis and the decision processes made by the Federation Council down the road. As the tour resumed, however, Niles drifted towards the Kurjarians, still wary of the fact they might only see someone who'd been assigned as soldier-caste, but once he heard what the fat one had to say, he shook his head. "Sir, that doesn't make it right. For over five thousand years of recorded Human history, there were laws allowing the powerful to do what they willed to those less so in impunity across many cultures; those laws no longer exist for a reason."

"What is it?" he asked, and then huddled with the aide. When Yatin emerged from the huddle, the color was gone from his face, as was the smile. "The tour is over," he announced, loudly. "Captain Eastman."With a sigh, Judy approached Yatin. Whatever it was that had suddenly angered him so, it couldn't possibly be good. "Yes?""Explain this."Yatin held out a data slate with a surveillance photo, courtesy of a Caldonian drone, of what looked like an assortment of figures, mounted on some kind of round beings. After Judy traded her sunglasses for her readers, she could make out faces... Harmon. Fox. Sh'qaleq. Th'zhaar. The new one... O'Connell. "This will be dealt with," she instinctively promised. Starfleet would discipline them, as they had to. "We will deal with them, Captain, in accordance with our laws, unless you have some reason for us not to," Yatin asserted. "You have one day.""Very well," Judy accepted, cursing herself for letting Harmon do... whatever he had done. She took a deep breath, straightened out her back, and looked at the crew. "Meet me in my hotel suite, in 15 minutes," she ordered them all.

Judith Eastman-Williams & Max Williams - Room 20137, Ambassador Hotel]Room 20137 (of the 201st floor), where Judy was staying, was in some ways similar to her quarters on Front Ear. It was large, spacious, clearly expensive, and (proof that the Caldonians had done their homework) equipped with a full kitchen. The last was now a positive boon, as it allowed Max, after he had gotten properly dressed in a pale blue button-down and tan business suit, to prepare refreshments, in the form of traditional terran omelettes. The room was also much more sterile than Judy's quarters, as befitting a hotel room. The design aesthetic was just expensive, with no character to the place to tie it together. Judy sat barefoot on the large sofa, overlooking the city, absorbed in the materials Yatin had given her, and what few resources the crew still on the Mac had sent. This was the worst-case scenario, and getting her people back was the only priority. Estelle, thankfully, was with Yatin, trying to butter him back up.

[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Hotel - Judy's room] Saya didn't even need her empathic abilities to understand Judy's mood and that something was very wrong, probably with their other team. She silently followed the captain back to the hotel, stopping in her quarters, though she didn't really need to do anything there. The engineer waited until precisely fifteen minutes had passed before knocking brusquely at Judy's door and entering. Used to Judy's preferences in her living spaces, Saya slipped off her shoes and left them by the door, approaching the older woman on quiet, bare feet and sitting on the opposite couch, tucking one foot under her. ' How bad is it?' she asked. ---------- Tag Judith Eastman

[ Lt Joshua Niles - Research Blvd. ]Even before Hetav and Baram could answer him, it would seem that the situation had changed drastically, and Yatin put a sudden end to the walking tour, and presented some information to the Captain that clearly had caused him no small degree of anger... and the news didn't seem to please Captain Eastman either, for that matter. And given the words that had been exchanged, there was something to do with personnel... And given how many members of their delegation had not been on this walking tour, which he'd been given to understand was not exactly discretionary in its attendance, he had a rough idea of who might be involved there. No, this was not good. Especially when a time limit to handle this had been promulgated. However, the Captain wasted little time in directing everyone to meet her in her suite in next to no time. Niles was always one to move with a sense of urgency, and when he'd reached the hotel he made directly for his room where he considered the uniform hanging neatly in the closet. The civilian clothes he was wearing were comfortable and utilitarian despite looking the part for a professional occasion, but they felt alien on his back in a duty situation. The black, grey and gold of his uniform, though? Those were clothes that belonged on his back whenever he was on the clock, and especially when things were going sideways. So at the risk of annoying their hosts, he shed his civvies without ceremony, and in the interest of time did not hang them back up, and pulled on his uniform, before making his way up to the Captain's dirtstide quarters. If the Caldonians wanted him to be a soldier, well, he would give them precisely what they wanted... and while it well might be a crutch, the familiar garments were what he had always associated with the need to maintain laser-focus and get on with a mission at hand. And if that could help him think, well, odds are the Old Lady would forgive him if he had offended in that regard. As it turned out, he was right behind Master Chief Ozu, and he followed the lead she had set, knocking at the door before stepping in directly and just in time to hear her ask about how bad the situation was. And if the Master Chief was asking, then it definitely was going to be bad. Though for now, he said nothing and found somewhere less than obtrusive to stand, and wait for more information to become available.

[ Lt Joshua Niles - Research Blvd. ][...] As the tour resumed, however, Niles drifted towards the Kurjarians, still wary of the fact they might only see someone who'd been assigned as soldier-caste, but once he heard what the fat one had to say, he shook his head. "Sir, that doesn't make it right. For over five thousand years of recorded Human history, there were laws allowing the powerful to do what they willed to those less so in impunity across many cultures; those laws no longer exist for a reason." [Hetav, Ex-Chief of Clan Relar - Research Blvd. > Ambassador Hotel]More words. These words were spoken in such a manner that suggested the speaker did not understand his station. Soldier Caste should be seen, not heard. Hetav studied the young human, losing the meaning of some of what he was trying to say, but understanding the condescension and insult to his people. "It gladdens me that your kind were afforded the opportunity of five thousand years to come to this way of life. That is the normal way of cultures, is it not?" He liked these people, as strange as they were, but he did not like being told what to do or how to think by them. He had the Caldonians for that. Ahead, there seemed to be an issue between Yatin and the human Captain. "I beg your excusings," Hetav said to both Baram and the wordy soldier, hoping they would both understand his polite exit. "I have some matters to attend to back at the hotel." With a pleasant smile for all, brightened a little for the chief engineer and her academic friend, he turned on his heel and hefted his rotund self back down the boulevard. Joshua Niles (soft), Matthew Harmon (Baram)(soft), exit Hetav.
