[Charlie Fox - En Route to Matthew Harmon's Quarters, Front Ear Station]Before S2 M2, after The Dirt Dude Vol. I - Intelligent Affairs"'The young and impressionable Chloe is uniquely vulnerable to the grizzled charm of the strong, superior officer figure. The sheer impropriety of such a romance would be a reason for both of them to avoid it, but some people might think the forbidden fruit vibe makes it sexy...'" She read aloud from the PADD in her hand as she marched down the corridor. Her eyes were flashing as she glanced up from the screen and repositioned herself further into the center of the walkway as someone approached from the opposite direction. Charlie Fox was annoyed, and she would happily send any oncoming traffic flying with a quick shoulder should they decide it was a good idea to infiltrate her personal bubble of irritation. Interrupt at your peril."'We also know Matt likes the daughters of authority figures...' Who is this Dirt Dude?" She spat, aggrieved at the invasion of Matthew's privacy. "I'll kill them." Then she audibly groaned at the mention of the former captain, and his mother. Why? Why go there. It was so patently unfair. Charlie was also aware that mention of her had been removed. She decided to keep that little nugget to herself. With a massive effort, she tried to get a hold of her anger. She wasn't there to rant, she was there to make sure that Matthew Harmon, if he had seen this drivel, had someone to rant to himself. She shoved the PADD back into the inside pocket of her jacket and slowed her march to a stately stroll as she approached Harmon's quarters. She stood outside and then leaned on the chime. She kicked the door, rather uselessly, with her booted foot. Then she tapped the chime again and spoke into the panel. "Matthew. Open up. It's Charlie." Then, with a smirk, "Let me in or I'll just break in."

It was before noon and Harmon was not on duty today so, naturally, he was still in bed. Suddenly, he was awoken by the chime of the door and the apparent sounds of someone assaulting his door. He almost went for his phaser, but then heard Charlie identify herself and sighed with relief. "Give me a second!" he yelled as he scrambled to quickly change out of his pyjamas into real clothes in an effort to make himself look vaguely presentable, despite his bed hair. A few moments later he opened the door. "Its so early," he complained before standing aside to let her in. His quarters were reasonably well sized given his rank and position. There was a living room with a couch and a lounge chair facing a video screen with a small coffee table in front. Towards the back of the room was a small kitchenette accompanied by a set of shelves that mostly contained various items of booze. In the middle of the room was a medium sized rectangular dining table with four chairs. Towards the side was the door to his room. "What's so urgent you nearly brought my door down?" he frowned, making his way over towards the kitchenette where he got out a glass and poured himself some orange juice. "Do you want something?" he asked lethargically.

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]"Hurry uuuup," she complained aloud when he asked for a second. A minute or so later when he let her in she took in his appearance, eyes sharp, probing. He'd been asleep, obviously, and he didn't look too upset. At least, no more cranky than usual. "Nice hair." She grinned and stepped inside properly, flinging herself backward onto his couch while he moved toward the kitchenette to fix himself some orange juice. "This is prime time for day drinking, Matthew," she informed him tartly when he complained about the early hour. But her good-natured ribbing stopped there, when he asked why she'd come. She frowned and sat up properly, staring at him again. Was it possible? Had he not yet read it? "Just... just to say hi?" She sounded very unconvincing, but she'd been caught out a little. If he didn't know about the Dirt Dude, should she be the one to tell him, to ruin his day? The selfish part of her didn't want to. She'd just drag him out, have a good time, and then maybe after a drink or dozen, she'd tell him... Unless he already knew, and he didn't care. Charlie dismissed that last thought almost immediately. "I wanted to check in on you and see how you were doing after the gossip column piece."

[Matthew Harmon - Personal Quarters]As she mentioned his hair, he tried to pat some of it down with little success. He then ignored her mention of day drinking, and took a sip of orange juice. He was trying to be better. Charlie Fox wasn't really one for just stopping by to say hi, so he raised an eyebrow until she spilled. "Now, Charlie, you know I don't concern myself with the garrulous gutter press," he said in response. It was a lie, of course, and Charlie probably knew that, but he was too proud to admit he read tabloids from time to time. After a long pause, he couldn't help but inquire curiously. "What column piece?"

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]"That better not include my garrulous gutter press!" She shot back in good humour, but when she realised that he hadn't seen it, the smile faded again. She sighed, then bit down on her bottom lip, staring at him, trying to decide how best to deal with this. Charlie decided to rip the band-aid off. With something of an apologetic look, she handed over her PADD, the one loaded with the Dirt Dude's column. "I'm sorry, Matthew." She sighed, then bit down on her bottom lip, staring at him, trying to decide how best to deal with this. Charlie decided to rip the band-aid off. With something of an apologetic look, she handed over her PADD, the one loaded with the Dirt Dude's column. "I'm sorry, Matthew." Once he took the PADD she flung herself dramatically back into the sofa, releasing another impatient sigh into the universe. "I'll help you find out who it is." [Matthew Harmon - Personal Quarters]"I make some exceptions," Matt smiled as Charlie asked about her gutter press. His smile dissipated and was replaced by a suspicious, quizzical look as she began to look more serious and handed him a PADD. 'The Dirt Dude'. Who was that? What a stupid name for a column. And cowardly too to hide behind an anonymous by-line. Surely no one would take them seriously. Matt's attitude quickly changed, however, as he read on and discovered that this particular issue was focused entirely on him. Not only that, but it was focused on his love life no less! His face turned a shade of red from a mix of anger and embarrassment as he read about Chloe. He'd heard people talking about them, but no one was yet bold enough to make such a public accusation. "I do not see Chloe that way!" he angrily protested, looking up from the PADD in disbelief. "She's...she's like a...I don't know, like a little sister to me or something. I'd never..." he looked between the PADD and Charlie a few times before continuing to read. He scoffed at the suggestion he had a thing for Mabel too, that certainly wasn't true. She was far too young and hardly his type. The suggestion of Felicity prompted an incredulous laugh. He respected her, but was well out of her league and had never considered that either. "Kaya? This bastard's really reaching now," he said. He liked Kaya, but certainly not in that way. He saw potential in her and found her to be one of the more tolerable people on this station. He put the PADD down and looked at Charlie. "Who is this guy?" he asked, his voice betraying his anger at having his privacy violated so much, the irony of an Intelligence Officer feeling such a way was lost on him at the moment. It then occurred to him something strange, this disgusting tabloid had suspicions about just about every woman he'd had much interaction with, except for Captain Eastman, who presumably was too old and too married for even this 'Dirt Dude' to speculate on, and Charlie. The omission of Charlie but inclusion of Mabel and Kaya was very strange indeed, though he wasn't yet sure what to make of it.

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]"I know," Charlie muttered softly when Matthew explained about Chloe. It was obvious to her, though it seemed not to others, that while the relationship between mentor and mentee appeared close, it wasn't romantic. She clenched her jaw, feeling the anger from him and wanting to respond in kind. For once she held back. This wasn't about her, and in honesty, she feared what would happen if the two of them lost it at the same time. When he asked who the Dirt Dude was, she shook her head. "I don't know. Spil has refused to reveal the identity. I threatened, said I'd quit, said that it was defamation, suggested the FNN was above this kind of garbage but he wouldn't listen. The click-through rate is apparently 'off the charts'." She'd raised her hands to air quote, but then let them drop back down to her thighs. "Look, we're an investigative journalist and a bloody chief spook - if we can't figure it out, who can? We'll get there. In the meantime, treat it like the trash it is and throw it away."It was good advice. Would she take it? Likely not. But Harmon was more controlled than she was. At least, usually.

[Matthew Harmon - Personal Quarters]
He was livid, and it only really got worse as time went on and he thought about it more. At least Charlie understood and thoughtfully decided not to use this moment to rib on him.
When it was mentioned Spil wouldn't spill he shook his head angrily. If he wanted to play it like that, then Spil had just made quite the enemy. "In that case Spil can be a co-defendant on my defamation suit!" he declared, though he did know it was highly unlikely such a suit would be successful. Still, there were other avenues for revenge and he was sure he'd find something suitable.
Matt again shook his head when she suggested he just throw it away. "No, your first idea was better...let's figure it out. Where should we begin? You aren't doing anything today are you?" He was determined to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible and extract the necessary vengeance.

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]"Well, no, not exactly, but Matthew..." She began when he asked if she had plans for the day. She hadn't any particular plans, apart from make sure he was alright, and then maybe drag him out to forget. Have a few drinks, get into some trouble. Launching an investigation was not what she had in mind, but if that's what he needed to do then she supposed that's what she would do. She sighed. "Okay, fine." Her eyes flashed then, and she held up a warning finger. "But you have to pay me for my work with a decent vintage of something."She narrowed her eyes as she realised she was underselling herself. "And dinner," she added hastily, sure that the addition was in the accepted timeframe of negotiation. Once satisfied, she reached out her hand for the PADD he was still clenching, and leaned back into the sofa cushions. "I guess we start by figuring out what connects all of these people this Dirt Dude says you have the hots for. Apart from you, what, or who do they have in common?"

[Matthew Harmon - Personal Quarters]"Great," he said when she confirmed she didn't have plans. "Yeah, yeah, of course, whatever you need," he had the money, he was more than happy to spend on some good booze for a friend. "Dinner sounds good," he said smiling slightly before catching himself. Not too long ago he didn't have any friends or people to support him when he needed it. Or when he was upset over something silly, like this. Perhaps being shipped off to Front Ear wasn't the worst thing that could have happened to him. "Hmm..." he said stroking his chin, trying to think of what they all had in common. "They're all Starfleet officers I guess," well that was obvious, he thought, "They're all women, which is very heteronormative of this Dirt Dude..." he'd been known to go both ways. Or at least he knew that about himself, probably not many new much of his past failed relationships. "I don't know..." he threw his hands up in frustration. Unravelling Romulan spy rings was one thing, but tracking down this tabloid author was something quite different. Seemingly harder.

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]"Well..."She looked at Matt, then lowered her gaze and grimaced. "They weren't all Fleet. There were two other people that The Dirt Dude mentioned, that Spil excluded to protect the FNN."She cleared her throat, then wet her bottom lip. "I was one of them." That gave them even less to use in order to narrow the parameters, but if they were doing this then she had to be honest. Not having the full facts would only hinder their investigation, impromptu and born out of anger as it was. "And so was Captain Eastman."She gestured toward the PADD and the list of his suitors. "It would make the most sense if the person behind all of this was one of these people mentioned, but I just can't see anyone here being bothered enough to do something so cruel. I mean, half of the people on it aren't even eligible. Some aren't even in the same quadrant."

Matt wasn't too sure how to respond to the revelation that Charlie was one of them. He tried to keep his face expressionless, "Oh..." he said, not sure what to say to her. That theory at least made far more sense than the others. Eastman however, he screwed his face up at the mention of her name in this context. Absolutely not. He didn't quite know what their relationship was yet, but it certainly wasn't that kind. He supposed it was a good thing those two names were omitted. "Hmm I can't see any of them being behind it," he stroked his chin in contemplation as he turned his focus back to theorising who was behind this libel. "Could it be someone I unknowingly scorned?" he wondered, "Who's that bartender at the Blue Beta? Candy I think was her name? She was coming onto me but I uhh...didn't bite."

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]Charlie was expecting more anger from Matthew when she told him about her inclusion on the list, and Eastman's, some righteous indignation at least, but when none came she felt a bit bewildered. She didn't really know why; it was a good thing that the anger portion of the discussion was over. Maybe in comparison to Chloe's honour or reputation, to pick just one, she was less likely to be bothered by a black mark? He was hard to figure out sometimes. At the mention of Candy, a spark of recognition lit in her memory. "Human waitress? Blonde? I've seen her before." She tapped a couple of notes into her PADD. "We should check her out. I have heard that she's a big flirt, though, even tried to chat up your Captain's husband once or twice."She lowered the PADD and then moved toward the replicator. "Coffee, black." If Matthew wasn't going to be a good host and offer, she'd just look after herself. "So, you didn't bite, huh? How come?" For a moment she forgot about the impromptu investigation and her smirk turned cheeky.

For a moment she forgot about the impromptu investigation and her smirk turned cheeky. [Matthew Harmon - Quarters]Matt took a while to think of just how to respond to that question. He was still conflicted on how he should respond to all this. Chloe was a bright young officer, she had her whole promising career ahead of her and she was smart enough to avoid the mistakes Matt had in his career. So this rag implying she was sleeping with her boss had him ropeable. The section about Charlie being removed was strange, and he did wonder how much she had to do with it, but aside from the truly laughable suggestions, that one was the one that bothered him the least. "Yeah, that's the one," he nodded about Candy. "She's bold, I'll give her that," he responded to the idea of her chatting up Max. Then the conversation turned to him again, and he was once again left uncomfortable and unsure what to say. "I don't know...well I didn't know her. I haven't had a good run with relationships," he said sadly as his mind went back to the situation that led to his exile on Front Ear. "I'm not good forming attachments to people. When I have, its usually went poorly. I'm not the kind to just walk into a bar and go home with someone like Candy, I struggle to trust people, to let my guard down with most. My job makes that worse. There's so few people I can truly talk to properly," while he danced around it, Charlie was one of those few people. There were probably only three people he knew who he had any degree of trust in anymore. Her, the Captain, and Chloe. "Candy could never have worked, even if I was interested," he said. "I'm sorry...I didn't mean to rant. That's more than I've spilled for the psych whenever they force me to sit with them. I guess some of it bottled up," he apologised upon realising what he'd done. He really hadn't had anyone to talk to for some time, but had come to feel comfortable with Charlie enough that he barely realised just how much he was ranting. "Besides, Candy isn't my type," he added with a grin as he tried to break the ice a little and deflect away from what passed for him as an extreme unintentional emotional outpouring. He sighed a little, "I think finding this 'Dirt Dude' can wait. I could use a drink, you up for it? A little day drinking never hurt anyone!"

[Charlie Fox - Harmon's Quarters]Charlie took a sip of her coffee while Matthew spoke about his attachments and struggles. She hadn't expected the conversation to take this kind of turn, but she did understand what he was saying. That he couldn't seem to detach feelings from a physical relationship was surprising; though him requiring a level of trust with someone in order to share that side of himself was not. When he apologised, she shrugged. "That's okay, I get it." Having recently been to a civilian therapist herself, she could only imagine what kind of poking and prodding a Fleet one would subject an officer to. Pushing like that was a sure-fire way to get her to bottle up, and it seemed like Matthew was the same. She did react with disbelief when he proclaimed Candy wasn't his type. In her experience, women like Candy were almost everyone's type. "Who is your type, then?" She asked with a mischievous smirk. He'd shared some details about his past on a couple of other ocassions, but the people in his background didn't really seem to share anything in common. "Finally, sense!" She declared, and marched back to the replicator to recycle her coffee. Day drinking was exactly the reason why she'd called by. Well, the reason had been to check on him, but the plan had been to distract him from this mess of an article. "I know exactly the place. We'll steer clear of the Beta - don't want anyone spotting us." They certainly wouldn't want to end up in another gossip column.
