{Spoiler}{Quoted Posts} [ Vedek Dima Emmari, Apazi Fellin | LZ-2, town square ] Those Bajorans who'd accompanied the vedek on the tour had now followed him back to the settlement square, the center of the Ha'mara celebrations. The town square was a rustic and earnest interpretation of the main Ha'mara setting back on Bajor. The spartan settlement space, itself a work in progress, was a scaffold for Bajoran banners bearing messages from scripture, memorials for the beloved dead, and a variety of altars and spaces for reflection. Bajoran vendors were taking advantage of the event and were selling home-wares to their farflung kind - food, clothing, art, plants, trinkets, and the like. At the center was a large brazier - it would be cold until sundown when it would be lit as the focal point for a feast. There was still two hours until the next official event, so Vedek Dima and the others were free to mingle. Vedek Dima and Apazi Fellin had remained in conversation, taking up space on a pair of benches under an awning. Fellin was filling in Vedek Dima on how things were for Bajorans on the station. "If I was looking to find a place where my hasperat would be appreciated, then I find the right corner of the quadrant," he joked. "Appreciated and uncriticized!" the Vedek countered slyly. Fellin laughed. "That too, that too! I suppose if one travels far enough, even mashed ichlotti in a wet ghizi would taste like home. Mmmhmm." "Ah, you didn't say you had hasperat ichlotti! I'm tempted to break my fast, Prophets guide me..." the Vedek chuckled. "A dead Cardassian has not ruined your appetite?" Fellin asked, unable to simply forget about the incident. The Vedek's smile faltered for just a moment then he shrugged. "Never has before. No, I don't think anyone will mourn that extinguished lantern." [fn]Let's say this is a reference to a Bajoran parable about hanging lanterns left in trees after a party to burn out on their own.[/fn] [Eta Borir - 3rd St., LZ-2, Kerelia]
Eta had actually enjoyed the quiet minutes, and drew in the air as if she had been diving for ten minutes. She was tired, and socializing was one of the things that usually tired her even more. When the man approached her, she stood up. The Cardassian woman looked briefly at Max to see if he would take the lead, and then back at Ensign Mora before nodding.
"Right" she just said with a sigh and tossed the tricorder to the human, but was careful not to drop it on the floor. Though that certainly wouldn't make a difference anymore either. Slowly she walked back to her stone and sat down again. Standing consumes energy unnecessarily.
[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - N 3rd St., LZ-2]Unusually for her, young Ms. Sh'qaleq exuded genuine righteous anger, the type that came from genuine hurt, layered on top of the usual default anger. She took a deep breath. "I know you're pissed off at the fleet, and at me in particular. I know you blame me for what happened on Caldonia, and you have every right to; I blame myself sometimes, and not a day goes by that I don't question what happened that day. I won't ask you to care, not about me, not about Starfleet, and not about this Cardassian, because I have no right to ask that of you. If you'd like this to be purely transactional, or if you want to walk away, then that is your right."Her soft voice trembling slightly, the vulnerability and regret Judy expressed were genuine. Whether that was worth anything to Kova as a reason to care, or as reinforcement for her smugness, was beyond the captain's control. [NPCs - Max Williams & Michael Eastman - N 3rd St, LZ-2]Max nodded in acknowledgement to Ensign Mora. "It's malfunctioning, but not in any usual way. It's just indicating absurd values, like reading off the wrong material composition for those cones, or the wrong species for us. My wife, the Captain, has been in Starfleet for a long time, and I've seen the kind of damage that bumps and falls do to a tricorder, but I've never seen this," he explained. "Usually they just give complicated error messages that Grandma doesn't like," Michael cut in, offering the kind of info that was novel to a child, but common knowledge for a professional member of the fleet. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - N 3rd St., Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] As Kova stood there watching Eastman, she wasn't sure if she was annoyed or disgusted. Judith Eastman wasn't behaving like the woman Kova had initially believed her to be. So readily playing the victim here... why? "Whatever... this is... I'm not here for it," Kova said. "This feeble old woman act you're selling... I'm not buying. Look, I get it. I'm the problem you inherited, not the one you chose. Well, I've got a simple solution: I'm done.""The difference, is this time I'm firing you!" Kova said. "Consider this last hack your severance. I'm done being Stryker's mascot. I'm done being the convenient, expendable hacker you have on call. Despite popular belief... I have hopes and dreams... feelings... I do hurt, and I do bleed." Kova had certainly done a lot of the latter to prove as much. "Being part of the solution didn't work out... and I'm done being your problem."Kova reached inside her jacket and pulled out her interactive lens. She placed the interface over her eye and moved towards the crane. "Chel-E, initiate lock pick protocols," the Andorian said. [... Initiating Protocol: LOCKPICK... ] [... Running... ACCESS GRANTED... ] [... Booting... MAINTENANCE MODE... ] [... 37% Degradation Detected... Options: ] [... 1) System Reset (Factory Reset - Data Lost... 2) System Restore (Renew to last Checkpoint... ]"Chel-E, Open the access logs... last thirty-four hours," Kova said. Kova watched as the computer within the crane flickered and flashed as it tried to complly with Chel-E's search. She had no idea what the woman was doing, but couldn't help but feel as if she was just standing over her shoulder, watching. She thought of saying even more, but what good would it ultimately do? Instead, she said the only thing she thought Eastman cared to hear. "This won't take long."[... Working...]

[Crewman Ezra Mora - N 3rd St., Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] Ezra caught the tricorder and began to examine it. He activated it, and began to run some of the scans to see if he got similar results that the Cardassian and the Captain's husband had been describing. "And you found this where?" he asked. He even took the liberty of scanning himself. "Breen? Damn, that's cold." the words left his lips flatly as he lifted his eyes upon the others. "It's definitely strange, and I doubt it was caused by a fall," he said agreeing with Max. "That would suggest a virus... perhaps a power surge that scrambled some of the routines...." his mind turned over a few more ideas as he attempted to consider a possible cause. "Or it could have been programmed this way, though I can't imagine why."

[ Rimi Mora - Town Square, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] Rimi was pretty sure she'd taken a wrong turn somewhere, but eventually found herself back at the town square. She could see the rest of the Bajorans that had been on the tour. Many of them seemed to be doing their best to carry on with the celebration. The young Trill hybrid couldn't help but feel that perhaps they actually had something to celebrate now that the war criminal had finally gotten what he deserved. Yet, as soon as the thought crossed her mind, she couldn't help but wonder if he actually deserved that. She didn't know every single evil thing he'd done, but did that really mean he needed to be treated as less than an actual person? Rimi began to wonder through the series of vendors. Some of them even attempted to persuade her to try some of their foods, but Rimi didn't seem to have an appetite. She then found herself pausing as she overheard a man say something about a lanter extinguishing. She turned and began to stare at him. He was with Bajoran guy she'd seen around the promenade. The one that was rumored to have the best hasperat on the station. She hadn't tried it yet, but that was mostly because her dad had seriously limited her credit allowance... to like non-existant. It took her a moment to realize that she was staring, and wasn't sure if she'd been noticed yet. So, she did the only thing she could: speak. "Hey, you're a... uh, veedeck, right?" That somehow didn't sound right, but it was certainly something they'd talked about in school. It was the kind of information someone like Anna would know along with every other factoid about the Prophets and evil patty-wraiths or whatever they were called. Rimi's eyes also noticed Leanna, from the Blue Beta. She was there with her kids. The young Trill hybrid wasn't exactly sure how warm of a welcome she'd get with her nearby. All of a sudden, trying repeated to score booze in her bar seemed like a bad idea, as it could seriously tank her current plans.

[Eta Borir - 3rd St, LZ-2, Kerelia] After thinking about why the location mattered, the Cardassian rose from her stone with a groan. "There, under the cone," she muttered, pointing with her index finger to the place where she had found the tricorder.
"Breen?" Eta asked, scratching at the bulges above her eye sockets.

[ LT Joshua Niles - N 3rd St, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia ]"It is Leftenant, Doctor,", he replied through his teeth, falling back into the Canadian pronunciation for his rank in the process, no less. And just then, he remembered that while he had withdrawn the slender wallet that carried indeed his Starfleet identity card, he'd not presented it. And so, he did just so, clearly displaying name, rank, and Starfleet Security markings. "Now, will these do, or do you need more? And unless I am sorely mistaken, you have a tricorder, so no need for a PADD."Assuming, of course, that this bloody woman would actually accept that Kerelia was still under Starfleet's jurisdiction and she was not one of those who would insist on dealing with only officers of command rank or higher due to their own inflated sense of self-importance. Once thing for certain, he was ready to bet she wouldn't have dared do the same with Commander Aune and that Senior Chief Melinh would have been able to quell her with just a withering glare. And he was getting thoroughly tired of wasting time; perhaps criminal investigations were not his forte, but he certainly did know that every second a scene was not secure, was an opportunity for critical evidence to be compromised, or removed. [NPC - Louisa Keltner, PhD - N 3rd St, LZ-2]"Buddy, if I pull your finger, will all that hot air come out?" Louisa asked flippantly. "We're gonna walk to my office, and you can explain to me how a Leftenant gets to go around giving orders that are way above his clearance level. Got it?"She walked off towards her office in the Ops center, letting this kid follow if he wanted to.

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia Colony LZ-2 - Infirmary]Riyo contemplated the question for a moment, trying to recall what he knew about Cardassian durability. He likely lasted longer than a Bajoran or Human, but that wasn't saying much. "Judging by the spread of the bruising around his waist, he survived long enough to struggle. But given his size and weight... He couldn't have survived any longer than thirty minutes before his heart and lungs were crushed. Given the prior weakness of his heart... I'd be survived if he lasted twenty." It had been a slow and agonizing death, likely the most terrifying half hour of the man's entire life. Riyo hated that he was glad about that. He needed to finish this job so he could get away from here. [NPCs - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen & Simkha Rif - Infirmary, Colony, LZ-2]"What a way to go," Simkha remarked pithily. "I'll let the Captain know," Mabel cut in. "Make sure you update the fleet database; San Francisco is adamant about knowing all workplace deaths at job sites."In the case of foreign nationals, like Dr. Murra, this same database also updated the local consular authorities of their home nations. M. Henriksen: Either accident or foul play. No suicide M. Henriksen: Time of death early morning, about 0500 to 0600 or so M. Henriksen: He was hanging for 20-30 mins before J.E.W.: Got it. Thank you.

She was insulted, sure, having made herself vulnerable, but she was also a seasoned player in this game, and she believed that the two great markers of inner strength were openness and restraint. She exercised the latter quite ably, not giving even the faintest sign that she believed Kova was more trying to hide from her own problem - her fear of commitment and connection - than anything else. "Thank you," she said curtly, business-like. Then, she got the messages from Mabel. M. Henriksen: Either accident or foul play. No suicide M. "Grandma's usually right about stuff," Michael added, ever the devoted grandson.

That means, since you think I did it, you should ask me for an alibi."With motor-mouthed determination, Louisa did the kid's job for him. "And by the way, I do have an alibi. I was on the beach with Judy until 1900, when I came back up here to do some more work. I sleep in my office, so I didn't leave the building until 0600, when I hit the gym, where the good sonic showers are. You can check the entry logs on this building."
"But with your attitude, you'll need to torture most people here to get half that much info."Louisa was almost in awe of the ineptitude, and she imagined Judy would be as well.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony N 3rd St.]Syl grinned at Charlie's estimate of the Bajorans' reactions to the body. She likely wasn't wrong. Looking down at the PADD, her brow furrowed slightly as she noticed Niles taking a very different tone with the woman. "Does he always flip like that?" she asked, a note of concern in her voice as she felt her chest tighten. She hadn't seen any signs of that personality type on their way to Caldonia, but that had been the least eventful part of the mission. Charlie seemed to know him from before. Hopefully she'd be able to say if the man actually had a temper, or if he was just putting on an act for the sake of the investigation. When the other woman pointed out Shavan, Syl stopped and waited for him to catch up to them. She didn't particularly feel like leaving Kova in Eastman's clutches, however, so she tapped the badge on her shirt. =A= "Hey Kova, we're in the Plaza when you're able to get away."=A= At least the Andorian wouldn't have to wander around looking for them when she was free. Syl turned back to Charlie with a nod. "Here's hoping," she replied to the suggestion of getting drunk.

[NPC - Louisa Keltner, PhD - N 3rd St, LZ-2]"Let me give you an assist, kid: you don't need everyone's encryption keys, you just need delegate access to the system, and Judy can give that to you if she thinks you should have it. And that woman went on, apparently deciding what she reckoned he needed or didn't need to do his job, and even deciding for him that he should be questioning her, and what he should be thinking. And at this point, he'd fairly had enough. "Madam, you will not be telling me what I think, or what you decide I should know or have access to. Especially not if you are a suspect, which you damn well think I should consider you as such by your own admission. And even though you're oh-so-bloody-helpfully providing me with information I have no doubt will check out, conveniently enough for you, but that does not rule you out until that evidence has been verified."Niles had enough, and it was only through some minor miracle of discipline that he did not raise his voice beyond the conversational, but his patience was most certainly getting taxed to the extreme. "In fact, at this time I am going to have to insist you provide me with those encryption keys, if only because a suspect, namely yourself, is of a mind that I do not need them. And if you are saying that 'delegate access' is all I need, you'll excuse me if I don't take a suspect at her word, Madam. In fact..."With a brisk gesture, he tapped his commbadge. =A= "Lieutenant Niles to Captain Eastman. Ma'am, Doctor Keltner is a person of interest and is of a mind that she gets to decide just how much information should be made available to me. I would require complete access to Warp Age's computer systems, and to override her access at least until the matter is settled. Please advise."=A= He did not like that he had to go to the Captain for this, but he would be damned if he would let a suspect by her own admission (who then somehow expected that spouting out an alibi would rule out any involvement on her part just because she volunteered the information, no less!) dictate the terms of his investigation. And since Captain Eastman was clearly the one authority she recognized, well, it was time to make use of it. And, he had to hope she would see the wisdom in not taking a suspect at her word, and in denying them access to possibly incriminating evidence.

{Spoiler}{Quoted Posts} [Eta Borir - 3rd St, LZ-2, Kerelia] After thinking about why the location mattered, the Cardassian rose from her stone with a groan. "There, under the cone," she muttered, pointing with her index finger to the place where she had found the tricorder.
"Breen?" Eta asked, scratching at the bulges above her eye sockets. [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - N 3rd St., LZ-2]Judy took Kova's series of angry recriminations in stride, not flinching. Henriksen: Time of death early morning, about 0500 to 0600 or so M. Henriksen: He was hanging for 20-30 mins before J.E.W.: Got it. Thank you. "You can narrow the window we're looking at to sometime during the night, before 0600," she informed the surly hacker. [NPCs - Max Williams & Michael Eastman - N 3rd St, LZ-2]"For what it's worth, I know Judy's been a little upset with how they store tricorders out here. Not secure enough, in her opinion," Max recalled, thinking the detail might be relevant. The possibility implicit from that: stolen tricorder, tampered with for whatever reason. "Grandma's usually right about stuff," Michael added, ever the devoted grandson. [Ens. Kova could think of a few places Judith Eastman could store her gratitude, but thought better of engaging the woman any more than was required. It may only have been two syllables, but that sense of vulnerability didn't seem as prevalent as it had before. It could have been Kova's imagination, or this ball-busting broad had gotten her way, and saw no need to be the victim any further. Kova had to wonder if Harmon still fell for that routine. Eastman then piped up, offering a truncated timeline to work from. Back-seat hacking was annoying, but even more so if that person was someone like Eastman. Kova said nothing to Eastman, but did give Chel-E a directive. "Chel-E... restrict timeline between 0400 and 0600," the Andorian said. [... Search Parameters Altered... ] [... Searching... ]
As the search continued, Kova could overhear Eastman talking to one of her subordinates. Sounded like Niles. The only other thing remotely interesting was how Eastman seemed to be fond of sending written messages. Undoubtedly, she was conversing with her favorite little spy, but was she the only one? [... Progress: 73%... ]Kova then heard the chirp of her commbadge. She nearly tossed the thing across the street, but hearing the voice, it was actually a welcome one. Syl had told her that they had gathered at the plaza. She reached up to answer the communication. =A= "Almost done here. Kova out," =A= she replied.

[Crewman Ezra Mora - N 3rd St., Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] Ezra listened to each of them, including the kid. He took a deep breath. "I have to agree with the cap," Ezra stated. If security on these was lax, it'd be easy for someone to get ahold of one and reprogram it. As to why... I figure they didn't want someone, probably the vic, to know that they were coming." Ezra looked at the others. "If I wanted to sneak up on someone, and I'd make sure their tricorder couldn't read my bio-signature. Maybe even set it to read any bio-signature but my own. Best way to hide in plane sight."Ezra reached up and tapped his commbadge. =A= "Mora to Captain Eastman," =A= he said, waiting for his captain to respond. =A= "Best working theory currently is that someone tampered with the tricorder to read false signatures. A thorough diagnostic should confirm. May even be able to pull prints from it to confirm who it belong to as well as who could have tampered with it." =A=

[Eta Borir - 3rd St, LZ-2 Colony - Infirmary] Eta briefly considered with a grumble how she could most effectively silence this child, but quickly blinked the thought away before she could come to any conclusion. She had been raised decently, after all. Still, it was fortunate that the Cardassian sense of hearing was not really pronounced.
Her gaze turned back to Ensign Mora as he pressed his communicator. Half of the people had probably left to find the cause of the Cardassian's death. "I'm going to see which Cardassian we're actually dealing with here," she muttered absentmindedly and walked at a normal pace to the Infirmary.

[Charlie Fox - Crane St., LZ-2, Kerelia]"Oh, I'm sure they're just heartbroken over it," Charlie quipped in response to Syl, her tone dripping with sarcasm and her lips curled upward. "Inconsolable. Crying a wormhole full of tears into their hasperat."She made another hand gesture in the air, and Olsen remained behind, transmitting the exchange between Josh and Keltner as Charlie and Syl moved away from the scene. She held out her PADD between them, so that her companion could watch with her, if she was interested. "Seems like she wasn't sleeping with the Cardy, after all," Charlie observed when Keltner spoke about her personal feelings toward the dead engineer. She was almost disappointed. Then, as the conversation continued, she groaned and lowered her hand. "Listening to those two measure their members is just painful, Syl," she moaned. She wished she could just leave it alone. She wished she could just wander off and forget she'd seen that body hanging from the crane. Unfortunately for Charlie, and for most people who knew her, she just wasn't built that way. When she saw Shavan wander away and approach via Olsen's feed on the PADD's screen, she reached out to slow Syl. "Hold up, here's Shavan."When the Andorian caught up, she called out to him. "Kova get pulled in?" She asked by way of greeting, then she pointed toward the plaza. "Let's go see if they've anything that'll get us drunk."It was truly what she felt like doing, but going to the plaza served multiple purposes, and she hoped she'd get a chance to have a chat with that Wolf Priest. For academic purposes, of course. [Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony N 3rd St.]Syl grinned at Charlie's estimate of the Bajorans' reactions to the body. She likely wasn't wrong. After all, trying to enjoy the festival was why he was there in the first place. Charlie Fox Syl O'Connell

After all, trying to enjoy the festival was why he was there in the first place. [Charlie Fox - Crane St. -> Plaza]Charlie's face scrunched up as she considered Syl's question about Josh. "Kinda," she answered eventually, though dissatisfied with the lack of clarity, she continued, "He seems to get like that when he feels his authority is questioned." There was that incident with Kaya, which she'd had a front-row seat for and was a prime example of the behaviour. The officer didn't respond well to people not responding to his presence in a manner he deemed appropriate. Charlie hadn't been exposed to that side of Josh herself personally, but she was a firm believer earning respect as opposed to just getting it as a result of a useless couple of letters before your last name. Her smile returned when Shavan joined them and Syl reached out to Kova to let her know their plan. "There's got to be a vendor here selling some sort of booze, right? It is a "festival"," she proclaimed, using her fingers to make air quotes. Then she raised her hand and summoned Olsen, who immediately stopped following Niles and Keltner from a discreet distance and flew toward them swiftly. They followed the path toward the plaza companionably, Charlie keeping her eyes peeled for the Bajorans from the tour and for some kind of Bajoran booze. She saw the Vedek and his hasperat friend first, before catching sight of a small table laden with pretty bottles of sparkling springwine nearby. It wasn't the hard stuff, but on a sunny day of celebration, it might be welcome. "Let's grab a couple of bottles and find a nice spot," she suggested to the others, nodding toward the small vendor. "Then we can sit and judge everyone." It truly was one of her favourite things to do.

[...] She then found herself pausing as she overheard a man say something about a lanter extinguishing. [...] [ Vedek Dima Emmari, Apazi Fellin | Square ] Fellin chuckled and shook his head at the Vedek's grim humor - Fellin wasn't at all scandalized, but it seemed a bold thing to be speaking about so casually when Fellin was sure Starfleet and Warp Age Designs would be acting quickly to determined the cause. But then, the Vedek was a bold man and seemed to have no fear of the Federation. It was then that they were approached by a young Trill. Fellin had seen her on the station but never met her. She addressed Dima, so Fellin kept quiet for the moment. "A vedek, yes," Dima said, gently correcting the pronunciation. He kept his laid back posture in the chair but his expression was warm. "Vedek Dima Emmari. Welcome to our Ha'mara," he added. "Trills are so open-minded, don't you think Fellin?" The other man had to nod. "Oh, certainly. Have you tried hasperat? It's Rimi, right?" The Vedek interrupted with a big laugh. "That's not what you want to know," he accused his subtle friend. "You want to see her recording. Tell me, who do you think hung up Dr. Murra, Rimi?" This time Fellin was taken aback. It was not in the spirit of the holiday to dwell on the macabre - a surprising vice from a Vedek, but maybe not, perhaps, from Dima Emmari. "You'll excuse me. I see a friend," Fellin said knowing the Vedek wouldn't take offense. Indeed, he saw Leanna - fellow Promenade restauranteur and promised to Paawin Riyo. He meandered over and raised a hand in greeting. "Welcome to Ha'mara," he said with a smile. "Riyo hasn't abandoned you, has he? Prophets guide him."
