[ Ilario Matteus Alfonse Vierdeau - Drunken Tritter, LZ-2, Kerelia ]{Quoted Posts} [Costa - The Drunken Tritter]"Is that right?" Costa asked Chloe Hudson when the girl deigned to tell her what she wouldn't be doing. Typical Fleet arrogance, but Costa knew all about it, she'd been one of them. Despite the situation she felt amused at the very transparent attempt by the young Intel officer to appeal to their egos in order to try to control the situation. Fleet always did think they were the smartest people in any given room. They were almost always wrong, and their egos were invariably bigger. And the Klingon just kept telling tales. "This one started it," she explained, her chin jutting upward as she nodded toward the coward. "I was just gonya finish it, sasa ké[fn]"Know what I mean?"[/fn]?" She kept the gun aimed until it was clear that Klopar was trying to make a break for it. So, when Gin Fizz started making demands of his own, she decided to turn her weapon on him for a brief moment. "Hush."Her other bar fly, the one who'd ordered the shot of a proper drink, had a knife in her hand. Costa had been vaguely aware of the woman warning the Klingon against taking action, and had obviously been willing to follow that warning up with some real consequences. Costa nodded in her direction as she returned the disrupter to its worn holster. "Taki[fn]"Thanks."[/fn]," she muttered.

"She may have started it, but if she tries anything more I will throw her in a cell," she looked between the Klingon and Costa. "You'd all best move along now," she ordered hoping they would disperse before things got any worse.

Somewhere on the darknets, a message came out, for all to see. Treasure is 129,600 paces (about 220 km) away from river K4. Fierce animals present. River K4 was a river running east-to-west, about 5000 km north of LZ-2.

They had no real jurisdiction here, or cause, the civilians didn't have to leave the bar if they didn't want to. But wait - did the Gin Fizz poser just call her a brute? Her communicator had begun to chirp, informing her that Baggy was on the other end with the information she needed, but for the moment she ignored it. "He'll see ya killed," Costa informed the other woman, her tone certain in response to the fancy man's assertion that he'd see her rich. "First timers in the jungle come back out with scars, or not at all." She had her own scars to prove it. "Catmons, hungry plant-life, and tritters. Scariest creatures I ever encountered. Wander too far in the wrong direction and you discover what true hunters look like, an' it ain't us."She double-tapped her ear, and Baggy's voice broke through immediately. < "Fiya expelésh, Hed. [Staz Volkova - Kerelia - The Drunken Tritter]Staz was rather grateful when the Klingon slipped out, and ignored the voice of the man that decided his advice was wanted. He was clearly one of those Federation types that didn't know the way the galaxy actually worked. The man that had been involved in the arguing approached, informing the bartender he'd be paying for her drinks. She raised an eyebrow, but didn't object. If he wanted to throw his latinum away, who was she to argue? What followed, however, was enough to make the Ochiran roll her eyes. She didn't say anything at first, but listened as Costa spoke about the dangers of the jungle. Part of her wanted to team up with her, as she clearly knew what she was doing. But she also clearly wasn't one to be taken advantage of, unlike the man practically throwing himself at her feet. Costa would have made a good Wolf. Perhaps they'd run into each other sometime. For now, however, her best choice was obvious. "What do you want?" she asked the groveling man, not looking at him. Her drink was set before her, and once more she squeezed the sugary juice into the glass with an air of disinterest. Offers like that never came without a price. And if they did, he was even more stupid than he looked.

[ Ensign Rin Zakir - The Drunken Tritter - Kerelia] Though he had half expected trouble when addressing the klingon woman, she simply strode past him, either not hearing him or ignoring him. He didn't mind which, so long as they were rid of one of the 'combustible elements' in this situation. He really didn't want to have to make any arrests, so he nodded in agreement when Hudson spoke. He imagined someone as entitled looking as the man making demands wouldn't care much for having to wait for someone to get around to him. It would be just his luck to be the one left listening to the whining. The woman with the disrupter thankfully placed it back into a holster, the dagger also being sheathed by another woman. Good, they weren't going to carry things on. At least, for now, but their was still something of a volatile atmosphere. He glanced toward the older man offering advice, which were sound words but probably would fall on deaf ears. These types weren't exactly the best at sharing, so even if they did work together, someone would end up with a disrupter hole in their back. That was when things took a rather interesting turn, the entitled man seemingly changing his tac and...flirting with his fellow treasure hunters? Though the exchange was somewhat amusing, he managed to keep his expression neutral as the woman who had been holding the disrupter earlier seemed to warn the woman off the idea. She spoke of the dangers of the jungle, which to be fair were most likely accurate. Especially to those who were inexperienced. Deciding to leave them to it, he glanced around the bar as people began trickling out. Had they all found some intel? It hadn't escaped his notice that a few had been dealing with various kinds of communicator before they left. "I'll be holding you to that promise of a drink...sir", he then spoke to Miren, feeling like he could very well need it. Especially if they ran into some of those plants and tritters like he had seen in the Melkon System.

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Kerelia - Town Square]Thankfully, for once, words were all that was needed to get the situation under control. Hearing Rin's comment about the drink, he smiled. "Good." He was not ashamed to admit he frequently needed reminders after he'd made plans. Of any sort. The Klingon left, not long followed by Costa, and the other two seemed content to chat. Cerjess relaxed a little, glancing down at the PADD on his belt when he heard it chirp. Taking a step back - just in case things did get violent while he was distracted - he checked the message that appeared. "Looks like someone just broadcast a clue to the treasure's location," he informed the other two quietly.

[ Ensign Ic Arbrell — Science Tent, LZ-2 Colony, Kerelia] No sooner had the nudge against Evoris’ psyche dissolved into Ic’s usual state of (unsuccessful) withdrawal, he realized the absolute stupidity of his previous conclusion. In space of lesser selvage, things lost or incomplete, obviously. He couldn’t believe he’d missed it— and like the last step of a stair in the dark replete with the sensation of a stomach in metaphorical freefall, it was sickeningly clear, but only now. Not a mixed radix, not eleven, but the other side of his heat-addled assumption. It seemed silly to blame the heat. It would have been just as easy to blame the gossip half a block away, but first he’d have to admit to hearing it, and Ic was not interested in acknowledging the conversation that shifted toward embarrassments he’d never hoped to recall. He was only glad that it seemed no one in the tent had been paying enough attention to him to notice his error. In fact, even if they had, he was pretty sure no one was going to notice that he had been wrong at all. The Deities, it seemed, were smiling on him for once. Now, if he could have just been ignored at all other times— “Nine,” he said, with a glance up to Captain Eastman nearby. “It’s base nine. Which could be roots like plants— nine of them total seems most likely. But… things can be written with more or less specificity to lead you to a certain answer; it’s not always just the answer, it can be the question, too. They could have told us nine in a different way, why use eights? Going on the continued landmarks assumption, I wonder if we’re also looking for figure-eight shaped or otherwise entangled roots? Something in sets of three, two, one, one, one?”

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Square, LZ-2 Colony ]Well, that was a start, and it would seem the Ma'am was in agreement and Bremmer was about to add something when a message appeared across their screens. A distance, and a river, both identified very clearly. Well, now that would certainly reduce the search radius, and with the hints they had thus far, it might even further reduce things further. "Ma'am, most of those clues are beyond me, but I can read a map."Well, at least that was one thing that hadn't changed much between her youth camping on Nova Kosice and Starfleet's fine toys: maps were maps whether they were printed on paper made of native fibers, or on a computer terminal. With that information in hand, Eliska made her way towards the map table and centered the view on the designated river, and a band of terrain described by it, and then she started looking for just what she had theorized: a pair of matching features, with a trail of five similar but smaller ones that seemed to descend from them.

Tag Eliska Bremmer Ah, straight to the point was that woman with the thick accent and perfectly understandable speech! So refreshing, those provinicials! Not burdened by the strictures of civility, not bound by the rules that guided the interactions between people whether they be of the same caste or different walks of life. Such unconstrained directness! Ah, how could one not like being on the ragged edge! Well, there were always those who were just plain old uncivilized, like that woman who had insulted him in that sing-song lingo of hers and that Klingon brute, but they were really just the hardships that a proper gentleman had to deal with when out there. Little different than the Starfleet jackboots, or those dressing up like them. "Ah, my good lady," he said after a refreshing sip from his re-made drink. "What I mean to offer you is that you join me in the hunt for the treasure, for a share? And listen not to that rude woman, I am no stranger to the wilds! My crew and I are seasoned explorers and seekers of rare treasures of all sorts, for sale to the highest bidder!"

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - The Drunken Tritter] The Klingon exited without more of fuss, which Chloe was grateful for. The others however, decided to argue for a bit longer, the sleazy rich guy promising the woman Chloe didn’t recognise that he’d make her rich, with Costa offering a warning. Personally, Chloe would have gone with Costa. This guy clearly wasn’t trustworthy and had an overly positive opinion of himself. And Costa, for all her prickly-ness was tough and experienced. “Whereabouts?” Chloe asked when Miren indicated the treasure had supposedly been located. “The one who just left, is named Costa,” Chloe whispered to Rin once she had left. “Follow her, not too closely. Keep in close regular contact with me. Try not to alert her, but don’t feel too bad if you do. She’s smart, pretty capable of picking up tails. You can take someone else from Security if you want backup.”

[ Jurgha, daughter of Khar - Science Tent] Jurgha gave Eastman a slightly more agreeable nod, then considered the question. She had arrived at the answer by the same thought process; it was only their thinking out loud processes that had differed. So where within it would be the easiest point to mess up and get a wrong answer? “Maybe someone would take the fraction out of 18,000 instead of 9? Then they would get 3.2.” Like an idiot. Then, the message appeared across her screen. 129,600 paces… “The number 129,600 is in the one I just solved." And Eliska and the Vulcan woman were talking about a river, which Eliska was now looking for. Maybe the number 3.4 would be important, when they figured out exactly where it was. She wondered if any other answers had to do with ‘fierce animals’, but looking back over the list, she didn’t think so. The only one they had not yet solved, that didn’t have a number for an answer was riddle 4. “Number four sounds like a landmark too… like a volcano.” tag Judith Eastman , everyone in the science tent

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Science Tent]Judy nodded to Jurgha. That was a potential mistake, to be sure. She turned her attention to Ic next. "Well, I suppose we should check what the Kurjarians call the radix in their own language," she suggested. "Let's just look that up..."She looked it up on a PADD. "Their word translates roughly as a bundle, or a collection of branches. So we have the numbers 8 and 9, and bundles or branches. But, someone's probably going to assume it is roots, since that's the term in so many languages."Judy then turned to look at Jurgha again. "A volcano. That looks right. Let's start looking at how all these things tie together. Ensign Enola, Ms. Bremmer, do you have anything that might tie into riddles #1 or #4?"

[Staz Volkova - Kerelia - The Drunken Tritter]Still without looking at him, Staz listened to the man's frivolous speech. If he really had the experience and resources he claimed he did, then it could be beneficial to team up with him. She wasn't stupid, though. Throwing back the shot, she slammed the glass on the counter and bit the fruit off the rind. Taking a moment to chew and swallow, she wiped the juice from her lips before answering. "Fifty percent. And for every time I have to save your ass, an additional ten percent." That should be incentive enough for him to pull his own weight...

[Costa - Into the Jungle, Kerelia]Costa loved the Diamond Dog. It wasn't just her ship or her livelihood, it was also her home. And it had many creature comforts and interesting little eccentricities, ingenious and creative feats of engineering work-around and her little box of shinies, but it wasn't exactly state of the art. No transporters meant that she was on foot, and with the terrain being difficult, that would add considerable time to this venture. However, this wasn't Costa's first rodeo, and she knew where she was going this time. Not just that, but also where to avoid. She fixed the sunglasses to the bridge of her nose, glanced at the handheld just one more time, and then stepped into the wild. Baggy had seemed certain of the clue, and even more certain of the directions. She was headed somewhat parallel to the K4 river, which residents had begun to refer to as 'kayfer', north-northwest, and away from LZ-1 and the cave system she'd discovered over a year ago. By the looks of things she'd be skirting tritter territory. The machete sliced as the underbrush grew thicker, her movements almost rhythmical, the cuts definitely methodical, practiced. The birdsong had quieted as she hiked; practiced as she was, very few things could fool the wary denizens of the Kerelian wildlands. After about forty minutes, she became aware of the pair of catmons following a short distance behind her, not on the ground but in the trees. With a soft, muttered curse she switched her portable computer to infrared scans, but did not stop. [Flynn - LZ-2]The colony town was alive with anticipation, and there seemed to be a tangible enthusiasm in the air. Residents and visitors alike were waiting for something, but the long-haired man standing in the mid-morning shadow of a nearby building knew they'd be disappointed. People invariably were with these kinds of things. Promises of riches, of mystery; it would draw the interest of many and the imagination of even more, but reality rarely matched up. It never matched up for the crew of the Dog. Whose fault was that? He wasted little more time considering the answer to that question, flicked his spent cigarillo, and followed at a distance behind a couple of Fleeters.

[ Ilario Matteus Alfonse Vierdeau - Drunken Tritter, LZ-2, Kerelia ]{Quoted Posts} [Staz Volkova - Kerelia - The Drunken Tritter]Still without looking at him, Staz listened to the man's frivolous speech.
Tag Eliska Bremmer How delightfully barbaric, watching that woman pound back her drink in such a way as to never really taste it, and then further anesthetize her taste buds with a bite of lemon. That was certainly a quaint tradition, but probably necessary when one lacked the means to procure drink that did not have a secondary purpose as a cleaner for engine parts or antifreeze for a cooling system! "I can't possibly offer you half of the gross," he replied with a smile. Of course, she could not possibly know of the costs of maintaining a ship and crew, let alone that system of shares that saw every member of Calypso's crew suitably rewarded. "But I can offer you half of my share, which is a third of the gross."Oh, yes, the system was set up already. A third to the ship's accounts for payroll, fuel, maintenance, docking fees and the like, a third to him as the master, commander and owner who also would foot the bill for any extra expenditures and the inevitable bribes and bonuses, and one third split among his crew on a system of shares based on role and rank. And given the nature of the treasure, the woman would make an exceedingly large amount of money off of half of his share...

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Square, LZ-2 Colony ]{Quoted Posts} [ Jurgha, daughter of Khar - Science Tent] Jurgha gave Eastman a slightly more agreeable nod, then considered the question. “Number four sounds like a landmark too… like a volcano.” tag Judith Eastman , everyone in the science tent [Capt.
Tag Ic Arbrell , Enola , Eliska Bremmer , Shavan Th'zhaar , soft Evorís Bremmer had relocated to the map table and she was perusing the information that had been found so far between that cryptic message that had made it to their terminals and all the other information that had been gathered. So far, the 'parents and their five children' could be either a pair of canyons that met and had five distinct but much less dramatic valleys where they met, and possibly a group of lakes. Well, at least that was a start. However when the Captain addressed her, she had to shake her head. "I'm sorry, Ma'am, but that math's beyond me. But like you said to Jurgha, a volcano's really possible; I can look for one, see how it jives with the other clues."Well, that wasn't much but with some effort she did bring up a geological overlay to see where there might be a volcano of some sort.
