Several days before S2M8 & S2E8
[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2] Two very similar figures emerged from the ocean on Kerelia, about 15 seconds apart. Under the bright light of the Kerelian moons (three full moons on this night), they could be seen reasonably clearly: slender, pale-skinned, blonde human women. Anna was slightly taller and skinnier, wrinkle-free, and wore a solid pink bikini, distinct from Judy's cow-print number, but on the whole, their appearances were extremely similar. "Mom, you see that figure over there?" Anna asked, pointing off to the distance. "I have a higher number than you, Mini-Me. I can barely make out my fingers," Judy answered. The two reached for their glasses in their beach bag, finding them in their respective cases: Anna's frames were solid pink to match her suit, while Judy's were brown, with both having cat-eye lenses. "I think that's Ambassador L'Sho," Judy assessed.

[Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Beach, LZ-2, Kerelia]This was much more suitable. The former Primary of Talor stood on the shore, sand beneath his bare feet and coastal breeze blowing back his loose, white hair. It had been some time since he'd had the opportunity to be amongst the natural elements and experience real wind, real water against his skin. The grotesque mechanical monster that was Front Ear Station held no such relief for the Talorian. He had tried to find such peace in the constructed lake in the Park, but the humans had managed to thwart him there, too. When he'd learned of the allurement of the jungle planet that his station prison orbited, he'd immediately requested transport in order to see for himself. It had been the best decision he'd made since his first purchase of cheesecake. "Ha'la[fn]Talorian word for bodyguard[/fn]. Do we know of the creatures of this body of water?" L'Sho could feel a forgotten, yet familiar, excitement bubble up within him at the prospect of a hunt. His eyes were automatically drawn to movement as they scanned for signs of underwater denizens, though once again, his curiosity was rewarded only with more humans. Two of them. One he recognised as Captain Judith Eastman, while the other he could not place. They were emerging from the water, wearing garments. Ambassador L'Sho shook his head, still not quite grasping the strange human requirement to clothe oneself before getting wet. "They call them beckinnies," he explained allowed. "If there is meaning to the colours, I have yet to discern it."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]"L'Sho is the war criminal, right?" Anna asked. "Well, uh..." Judy trailed off, trying to find the words to hold back her headstrong daughter. "That's a yes, Mom.""Anna, please, don't do anything stupid.""Relax, Mom, I won't."Anna strode off determinedly towards the Talorian. "Max is gonna kill me," Judy muttered. "Ambassador L'Sho, I take it?" Anna addressed the Talorian, with the confidence of a teenager who thought herself invincible. Then, she glanced down, and realized he was naked. "I... uh..." she stammered briefly, turning her eyes to the ocean, before remembering that the Talorians had no taboo on nudity. "I'm Anna Williams, and I believe you already know my mother, Captain Judy Eastman-Williams."Judy had by now caught up to her wayward daughter, and, though the young woman's antics were causing her quite a headache at the moment, she couldn't help feel a bit of pride at the independent spirit that Anna had inherited.

[NPC - L'Vysh'ta - Beach, LZ-2, Kerelia] This was Kerelia. A planet the Federation believed they could tame. It was becoming more and more apparent that the Federation were not conquerors in the traditional sense. They had numbers, but could not match brute strength. Their warfare of choice was psychological. It was quite formidable in its own right, but not it wasn't impervious. These were the thoughts that came to L'Vysh'ta's mind as she stood sentry while the Primary... former Primary prepared to enjoy his swim. Thus far, free from the ridiculous assertions Starfleet had charged him with in the station's park. Public nudity. Such a strange human notion. Anatomy was hardly a secret. Why they viewed a person's body as something to promote shame was beyond her. Perhaps part of their psychological tactics. As he stood on the shore, embracing the winds and the water before him, he inquired about the sort of game the waters held. In her studies, L'Vysh'ta hadn't really seen anything thus far that posed any real challenge for L'Sho. "I believe the more formidable game lies inland, Kam'Do[fn]proper address of ranking official; similar to 'Your Grace'[/fn]. Any worthy game has migrated to the north during this season."L'Vysh'ta's gaze quickly adjusted to a pair of humans approaching. One was the Captain of Frontier Station, Judith Eastman. The other was a younger woman. In L'Vysh'ta's opinion, she was to young and feeble to be a ma'tam[fn]assassin[/fn]. Even if she were, L'Vysh'ta was quite certain she could paralyze the girl within three blows: one to disorient, a second to dislodge her spine, and a third simply to see her bleed. L'Vysh'ta was admittedly eager to learn how quickly blood could flow from human bodies. The ha'la was clothed, unlike the Ambassador, and she was armed. Her attire was essentially a dark-colored body suit that but at the shoulders and just above the knees. A single blade secured on her right thigh. As the young woman addressed the Ambassador, she quickly averted her eyes. More than likely, this was the result of their human habits, because there was no way she believed herself suitable to be considered a potential mate for L'Sho. This brazen approach, followed by her clear submission. L'Vysh'ta's eyes narrowed slightly, a distant temptation to put the girl out of her misery now swelled within.

[Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Beach, LZ-2, Kerelia]"A shame," he responded, though his tone did not mirror the meaning of the word. "Arrange for an expedition to the northern land, ha'la. We will make a training exercise out of the hunt, while simultaneously reconnoitring this continent first-hand."L'Sho had no intention of speaking anything of personal import with L'Vysh'ta, beyond the realms of her duties to him as ha'la. However, that did not stop him from viewing the intrusion from the human females as anything but ill-timed and rude. Much like his fellow Talorian, he made the assumption that Judith Eastman was not actively allowing her spawn to offer herself to him as mate, but rather she was expressing shame or embarrassment at seeing him unclothed. With that assumption made, he made another: Eastman and her kin had not bothered to educate themselves on Talorian customs before engaging, and that it was lucky for them that he was such a considerate political figure, as otherwise he would have been within his rights to be critically offended. He had realised early on, however, that the humans did not care who they offended. They were unapologetic when it came to their ignorance, and L'Sho thought this was perhaps their greatest failing, and their most annoying trait. "Yes."That was his response to the human. She'd merely asked for confirmation that he knew Captain Judith Eastman, and he'd politely provided. He stood straight, staring at them. The only visible movement was the slight twitch of his hand - the one missing a finger.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]Judy couldn't help but think how fortunate she was that her daughter wasn't one to gawk. Michael, for example, was liable to ask questions about the Talorian anatomy, had he been present. However, Anna was a smartass. "This job was a pretty massive demotion for you, wasn't it?" the teen asked rhetorically, now looking at the onetime Primary. "How did that happen?"At this point, Judy's instinct as a mother was to grab Anna and drag her away, kicking and screaming if need be, away from the naked war criminal. However, as she placed a hand around her daughter's waist, she realized that not only would that physically not work, but it would also create even more of an interstellar incident. No, she'd just have to ride out the storm. Anna, for her part, brushed her mother's apparent nervousness aside. There was no way L'Sho, or his bodyguard, would hurt her, what with his precarious standing and the Federation's strict laws against murder.

[NPC - L'Vysh'ta - Beach, LZ-2, Kerelia] Typically, such a show an impudence would be met with a firm response. Yet, there were so many intricacies surrounding this girl that it made the natural response a calculated one. Of course, L'Vysh'ta wasn't going to just stand there and let this girl insult L'Sho. It was only because her own actions impacted him that her response was as measured as it was. She didn't trust herself to retort vocally, but actions certainly spoke louder than words. L'Vyshta stepped forward, placing herself slightly in front of L'Sho, her own proximity mere centimeters from Anna Williams. She towered over the girl with her presence alone. Yet, her position was not only meant as an intimidating posture, but she placed her fate in L'Sho's hand, knowing he would read the gesture for what it was worth. If he ordered her to strike the girl, she would. If he wanted her to remove her tongue, it would be done. Her next move was for him to decide. Though, the next few moments could also enlighten L'Vysh'ta as to how much humans actually cherished their offspring.

[Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Beach, LZ-2]They really were quite loathsome, these humans. And this woman and her spawn were amongst the worst he'd had the displeasure of meeting. L'Sho did not react in any way, keenly aware of L'Vysh'ta's proximity as she moved around and in front of him. The bodyguard was reacting to a threat, as was her job, and he had no intention of stopping her. Under Talorian law, the behaviour would be considered a challenge, and reaction was not just allowed, but expected. He was unfortunately no longer on Talor Prime, and from his studies he had gathered that humans saw no violence in words, and that damaging one of them in retaliation for rudeness or arrogance could result in his ha'la's apprehension and imprisonment. "It happened because Captain Eastman made a decision that impacted the entirety of my planet, without consulting with anyone on my planet."His gaze was cool, despite the amber glow of his eyes. "In my culture, child, your actions and words would be construed as a challenge, and I would be within my rights to react in kind." He looked at Eastman for the first time. "Do not taint your offspring with your arrogance. Wielding ego is not a birth right, it is earned. Teach her to be better."He raised his hand and waved it, as though swatting away a persistent insect. His version of dismissal.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]Under the apparent physical threat from L'Sho's bodyguard, and the verbal chastisement from the Ambassador himself, Judy and Anna naturally came together. It was in their nature to stand by each other, as mother and daughter first and foremost, but also as Jews and as human beings. There were no sassy comments from Anna about her mother's faults, nor from Judy about the hubris in her daughter's youth. Though she instinctively backed away from the bodyguard, Anna did not allow herself to hide behind her mom, instead standing tall. "My apologies, Ambassador. Why don't you tell us more about your culture, so we'll know better next time?" Anna invited, choosing to try to be diplomatic. Judy was making the same calculation, though her daughter was quicker. Diplomacy might take the sting out of Anna's behavior, though friendship was definitely off the table. "Yes, come sit with us. I've heard you have a fondness for human cakes."Whether the Talorians joined or not, the two humans headed back towards their things.

[NPC - L'Vysh'ta - Beach, LZ-2, Kerelia] The Talorian ha'la watched as the brat displayed actual intelligence and retreated back to her mother, Eastman. L'Vysh'ta remained unmoving, committed to L'Sho's command once he gave it. It seemed he decided that mercy was a more prudent tactic at this juncture. It was not L'Vysh'ta's place to criticize, but she couldn't promise that she would have been as forgiving. The girl asked after their ways, as if she were actually worthy of knowing anything about their people. It was just further proof of how presumptuous the Federation was. They believed everything could be expressed in words. To truly know what life was as a Talorian meant to experience it. Naturally, it didn't pear that there was a long list of volunteers seeking to the opportunity to be envoys on Talor Prime. The elder human then asked the ambassador to sit and join them, mentioning cakes and his fondness for them. Did they really think L'Sho such a simple man that he could be tempted by human cuisine of all things. She had no idea if desired to embellish in their collective company any longer. Still, he was Prime in charge. The one thing that L'Vysh'ta was pleased about was that at least these humans seemed to finally know their place in L'Sho's presence.

[Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Beach, LZ-2]The Talorian blinked several times, rapidly. Had he been familiar with the term "whiplash" he might have used it successfully in this instance; the speed that the human child's approach changed from impudent to respectful was break-neck. L'Sho, despite his many failings as an individual, still was not vain enough to believe that it was his words that made the difference, rather more likely was the vague threat of violence. "What is it specifically that you would like to know about my culture?"Asking about it overall was a ridiculous question, the former Primary thought, it was akin to asking about all of the species of the seas. The topic was too grand for generalities. He had been willing to entertain curiosity regarding his people, if it was genuine, but he found the invitation to join them quite frankly bizarre. Was it not obvious that he had been preparing for his swim? And that his ha'la was most displeased? The very sight of Judith Eastman brought with it an instinct to avenge. Yet he wondered if refusing would return the human captain the upper hand. That would not do, this was a long game of strategy that L'Sho planned on being the last one playing. "It is my preference to stand." He moved closer, however, nodding at his bodyguard to follow. "I have become fond of your Cakes of Cheese. I have sampled other forms of confectionary and have found the Cake of Cheese to be superior." It had been one of very few enjoyable elements of his new life. The cheesecake, and this beach. Or it might have been, had he not been interrupted by the humans.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]At the Ambassador's decision to stand, Anna looked to Judy for guidance, not sure if to sit down anyway and let him talk down at them, or to stay standing and give him this control. For now, Judy did neither, instead reaching into their beach bag while speaking. "I believe the first cheesecake you were sent was actually mine. I'd baked it for the crew, and my assistant thought it would be kind to share with you," Judy explained, as she took a box out of the bag. "These are rugelach with a poppy-seed filling, a traditional dessert in our particular human subculture, the Jewish culture," she introduced the pastries. "Help yourselves."Judy set the box down, and then reached back into the bag for a cover-up, in the form of a loose-fitting black dress. After putting this on, she sat down on her beach towel and leaned back comfortably. Anna followed suit, her own coverup being a similar pink dress. "Do your people also eat together as a social ritual?" the young woman asked at last.

[NPC - L'Vysh'ta - Beach, LZ-2, Kerelia] It was not her place to make open suggestions, but L'Vysh'ta couldn't help but feel this was a waste of time. Still, it seemed that the Eastman woman had discerned how to capture L'Sho's ear with the very mention of the Cakes of Cheese. Of course, she then mentioned something else... which sounded repulsive by its name alone. The Eastman woman was not foolish, that much had become clear. She was not bold... or stupid enough to attempt to poison the Ambassador. So, what was her game? L'Vysh'ta simply stood barely a meter behind L'Sho, wondering if he'd partake of this baked good being offered to him. She personally had no intention of joining them. It would be an abandonment of her duties to do so. The last thing she planned to do was to let her guard down around these humans. They were deceptively cerebral in their machinations. Feeble physically... but dangerous if underestimated. The absurd question that was asked by the young one nearly caused L'Vysh'ta to roll her eyes. What a stupid question... or was it another insult? Did they think Talorians were savages? If she could not murder the girl, could she at least remove her tongue?

[Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Beach, LZ-2]"My people and I believe that you and your assistant meant to mock us by sending down the Cake of Cheese instead of sharing your plans for our planet." L'Sho said this with no emotional inflection; he was merely stating a fact. Captain Eastman would not be able to convince him otherwise, in fact further reinforcement of her lie would be very insulting to the Talorian. He waved L'Vysh'ta closer, and gestured toward these new human baked goods that Eastman was offering. "My ha'la must scan them to ensure that they will neither kill me, nor leave me in gastric distress. It is procedure when accepting edible gifts from those who might mean you harm."Even though he was off Talor and away from the Council, the former Primary was still suspicious. Much as he loathed them, it wouldn't do to underestimate the humans. From what he'd learned of their history, they could be prone to epic barbarism and deceit. When the younger female asked a question relevant to both the situation and his suggestion that she be more specific, he actually answered. "We take breakfast together every morning. That is normally a busy affair as we tend to live in large abodes with extended family. We eat, discuss our plans for the day and advise each other if requested." Of course, not all family were always present for breaking of the sleep-fast, just those who had been recognised. He eyed his bodyguard for a few moments, realising that with so few of them on that Station, he should begin insisting that they all break fast together from now on. Traditions were important, as was a sense of unity. Especially now, with them being so far removed from Talor.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]The Ambassador's assessment of Mabel's motives drew a quizzical brow raise from Judy. It was so far off, divorced from the norms of human culture, and - she assumed - divorced from Mabel's demeanor. Compared to that, scanning food for poison was a non-issue. In fact, with all the apparent interspecies differences, it was even sensible. It was also wrapped with an insult to Judy's character, which she could charitably assume was a Talorian tradition. Breakfasts, at least, were a normal thing, not rooted in subterfuge. "That's very interesting," Anna observed. "The big meal for most human families is dinner.""In our particular culture, the Jewish culture, there's one dinner a week that's more elaborate than the others, when we get together with extended family. That's Friday night, before our traditional day of rest on Saturday."
