Approx. one month following the events of Anomaly and A Tail of Two Planets [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - First Officer’s Office, USS Mac]Judy leaned back in her office chair. Even as Acting Captain of the ship, she wouldn’t use the Ready Room - she needed her ergonomic furniture, her family photos and various tchotchkes, snack drawers, and so on. She briefly glanced out the viewport, at the stars peacefully streaking by. She’d known this view in two contexts: as a harbinger of violence during the War, and as a tender view of daily mundanity during her peacetime service. She wasn’t sure how she felt about it. Setting these musings, and her paperwork, aside for later, she turned to a certain Captainly task. ”Acting Captain’s log,” she dictated gently. ”We are now about four days’ travel away from Arkaria. At a steady clip of Warp 9, we’ve stayed on schedule, and the crew has performed admirably so far.”She gently tapped on the desk, taking a quick pause. ”We’ve also been keeping a close eye on our prisoners. They’re dangerous, determined, and after 11 years of a manhunt, we don’t want to be the ones to lose them,” she added. ”Suffice it to say, I’ll sleep just a little easier when we get rid of these dirtbags.”***
[Bridge, USS Mac]Judy entered the Bridge, just in time for the start of the shift. It’s not that she was really needed here, so much as a matter of seeing and being seen, demonstrating to the crew that their XO - currently Acting Captain - was here for them, and not just an uncaring desk commander. Besides, she came bearing gifts. She had in her hands a plate of fresh, home-baked chocolate rugelach (see image), a traditional Jewish pastry. ”Good morning,” she greeted the crew as she strode onto the bridge. ”I got you all some treats.”The little pastries were warm, a little bit crispy on the outside, and quite sweet.

As an Ensign well on his way to complete the requisite training to take the Bridge Officer's Test, every minute he could spend up there working to absorb the minutia of starship management from that particular position was good. And, it also meant he was free from paperwork, make-work tasks, and dealing with a task that, while he'd proven to be at least reasonably competent at had been completely out of his realm of expertise. Well, at least he wasn't responsible for starting a diplomatic incident. Yet. The mission at had seemed, however, a little beneath the station of a ship like the Mac. Granted, the passengers they'd just taken on board were known to be right monsters, and extremely dangerous. Therefore, it made sense to some degree to make sure they'd be surrounded by the best-trained security force available (of which Niles knew he was not despite the gold shirt he wore and the certificate saying he had successfully completed the Security and Tactical Officer's training program, his true expertise laying elsewhere than in the world of physical security), and keep them in the most secure transport they could find. Which meant, the USS Mac, the very sharp end of Starfleet's very long spear, one of the most advanced starships in space, became a prison barge. But, that was not for him to worry about. He was kept, wisely, away from most physical Security tasks and was fully on the watch and station bills as a Tactical Officer. And for now, it meant monitoring his sensors and making sure weapons didn't arm themselves on their own. And so far, there was nothing out of the ordinary to deal with. Other than for this run, the Old Lady wasn't really the Old Lady. Well, Commander Eastman certainly fit the moniker better than Captain Ellis, but she wasn't the Old Lady. But, she was in charge here, it was all that mattered. And thinking of the devil, there she came. Blonde and calm, and kindly and smiling, much like the grandmother his childhood friends had and he did not due to his own actually being shrewish, neo-aristocratic status-obsessed types... and she carried... pastries? And she was offering them?! For a moment, Young Ensign Niles' brain locked, trying to process the information. That was entirely outside any frame of reference he was used to. Hell, he considered it a luxury to be told he was allowed to have his coffee at his station, but sweets? That was entirely new! But, he had to work his way out of that state of confusion, and instead, he fell back on what he knew best: being a very, very young officer who would rely on protocol; already he knew not to announce her presence, but, giving a report was never really wrong... [Deck 2 - CMO's Quarters] Exiting the shower, Thea reached for a towel and quickly wrapped it around herself, feeling clean and ready to face her next shift. Only this time instead of being Acting XO, she was back to her normal duties, which she had been enjoying ever since the Mac had left Front Ear. Not that she hadn't enjoyed her stint on the Bridge, even if she did end up seriously injured and it certainly hadn't put her off for taking on that role again. It was all experience and for the CMO she would never forget it and as usual would learn from it. Walking over to the bed, she sat down and picked up her PADD, to check over her daily schedule, noting that she or one of her staff would need to perform their daily checks on the prisoners the ship was escorting, as well as the usual catch up of physicals and other important appointments to maintain and keep the crew healthy. For now she put the PADD aside and began to dry and get ready, her thoughts drifting to one Isaiah Quinn and whether she would get to see him or not before her shift began. No doubt she would catch up with him at some point as she pondered the idea of getting something to eat in the Mess Hall or the Crew Lounge. Decision made, Thea put on her boots and lab coat and exited her quarters, before walking the short distance to the Mess Hall.

[Deck Two]
Datan arrived on Deck Two via one of the turbo-lifts, he was soon to take his turn of duty on that day. It was agreeable to finally take up his duties as a Starfleet Officer, he had been forced to take a five-week leave of absence, owing to an illness that had struck his Father, necessitating his return to Vulcan. The illness had coincided with his graduation from the Academy, as well as his duty to the service he also had a dutiful obligation to his closest family. Thankfully the illness was treatable and as such his Father had recovered, though he had not learned what the actual illness was, his Father had kept that private as was his right. The Ensign was holding a small padd which contained some personal correspondence, it was from his Mother and concerned the health of his Father. T'Prell had taken up the duty of care, following her return from a diplomatic conference that she couldn't leave and thus made it necessary for the Science Officer to return home. Upon returning to duty the Vulcan had been given a choice of assignments, either to take duty onboard the USS Mac to transport prisoners to Arkaria, or to take a duty assignment on the Starbase, he'd opted for the USS Mac. The assignment was unusual, in the fact that the ship was being utilised as a means to transport prisoners, peculiar because the Mac was a Sovereign-class vessel and such a task seemed odd for the vessel. The Vulcan came to a sudden halt upon realising he was about to have a collision, the padd slipped from his grasp and slammed onto the deck at the feet of the person he nearly bumped into. Datan's grey eyes met with the Doctors, his right eyebrow raised for a moment before he spoke. "My apologies Doctor," He recognised Dr Baker from his routine medical, which he was professionally obligated to attend when joining the ship. The Ensign dropped to one knee and into a posture that looked as though he might be proposing marriage to the Doctor, that was not the case obviously. He retrieved the padd and pushed himself back to a stand. Holding up the padd for the Doctor to observe, the Ensign believed that some form of explanation was required. "It would seem that I was distracted by my personal correspondence," He looked troubled.

[Deck 2 - Corridor, USS Mac] Walking the corridors of the Mac were a lot different to the Station and something that Thea was still getting used to, even after all of these months. Although she had to admit, she was grateful for the opportunity that her position gave her in being able to alternate between the two and it was also a lot of fun to run, along them whenever she wanted a change of pace. It was just as easy to get lost in thought, remembering good times as well as what she wanted when she got to the Mess Hall. Food choices were always important, especially before a duty shift and whether she wanted to indulge or be good. Deciding that today she was definitely going to indulge and make up for it with a run later to balance it out and not feel guilty. Feeling positive about her decision, Thea didn't see the Ensign approach at first, until she heard the dropping of a PADD and saw him stop abruptly before he bumped into her. Recognising the officer as he apologised, Thea smiled warmly until he suddenly dropped to one knee and if anyone came across them right now, it might look a little odd. Thankfully any awkwardness was avoided as the Ensign picked up his fallen PADD and showed it to her, before explaining what had happened. She understood that as he wasn't the first person to do so and wanted to quickly reassure him. " That's okay Ensign and I completely understand, as I can get distracted from time to time ..... I was just on my way to the Mess Hall if you care to join me?".

[Deck Two - Corridors leading to the Mess Hall]
Thankfully Doctor Baker was not disturbed by the Ensign's awkward arrival and subsequent clumsiness, in fact, the result was one of an invitation to the Mess Hall. That had in actuality been his desired destination and hers too it seemed, which had attributed to their meeting as they had. "Thank you, Doctor, that would be most agreeable!" Datan replied warmly as was his character and likewise to the point, as was a characteristic of many of his species, often it was an irritation to none Vulcan's. However, Datan made the conscious decision not to state he was already heading to the Mess Hall, it may have appeared as rude if he had done so. The two of them began to walk in the direction they both intended, the Vulcan held the PADD in his right hand and placed both behind his back as he walked ramrod straight. In such a posture the Vulcan stood at nearly a foot higher than the CMO. "May I ask Doctor," He asked turning his focus to Baker, "Have you served with the Mac for long?" Datan refrained from using the Doctors rank and omitted to call her Sir and Ma'am, from what he had learned about Doctors they preferred being addressed as such and if his knowledge served him correctly it was because they'd trained so long to earn the title. They arrived at the door to the Mess Hall, at which point the Vulcan stopped and politely gestured for the Doctor to enter first. That was a common Earth courtesy reserved for ladies and senior ranking officials, for the most part, he'd observed during his time at the Academy. "Please," He said maintaining his gesture towards the Mess Hall.

[ The Arkarians | Brig, Deck 9 ] ]
There were three of them. Benor, old grizzled, and built like a boxer. Her younger brother Malko made the mistake that got them all caught. And the sabateur Cheron, she'd been taken down with them, and now they were all on their way back to Arkarian space to face their fates.
The Arkarian fugitives were held in separate cells. The cells faced each other, clustered around a junction.
"Stop pacing," Malko ordered Cheron who'd been doing it for more than an hour.
Cheron answered in a mocking sing-song. "I'd sooner airlock myself than listen to another of your clever ideas," she said.
"Do it," Benor said lazily where she rolled around the last dregs of tea in a cup.
"I'm not pacing, anyway," Cheron said with a little smile. "I'm casing. I'm going to get us out of here."
Malko approached the force field, stretching out his arms and looking around. "How?"
"Patiently," Benor replied peering at the tea leaves that swirled at the bottom of the cup. "Patiently."

They both knew that Judy didn't have much interest in the Captaincy, not with her full family life or her health. "You go ahead and run the diagnostics. Show me the raw results, too; test my skills," she ordered, with a gentle tone and a smile on her face. She did so like to give her engineering talents a test. She then advanced, set the cookies on the empty XO chair, and sat down in the Captain's chair. She crossed her legs at the knee, right over left, and gently adjusted her knee-length uniform skirt. "You folks relax, help yourselves," she then urged the crew, especially the Junior officers. "Last time I checked, the Starfleet manual doesn't say we have to be miserable, despite what the... terrible chairs would imply."Uncomfortable bridge chairs were a longstanding pet peeve of Judy's. Those who'd worked with her often knew how much she loathed these chairs, and the fact that the Captain's chair had hip, back, and neck cushions on it spoke to that extent too.

Saya strode over to snag a pastry, setting an example for the other members of the bridge crew. She stood beside Judy as she took her first bite, closing her eyes in pleasure at the taste. Don't tell Captain Ellis that I think you're the best captain, she murmured teasingly. After a couple of quick bites, the delicious pastry was gone. Saya brushed her fingers on her cargo pants, tugging her tunic straight before clasping her hands at the small of her back. I'm running a couple of diagnostics. Nothing that should interfere with the ship's normal functions.Alex got into his uniform and prepared for a new mission. As he made his way towards the bridge he smelt something interesting. He was prepared to do some inspections before he had to take the helm. He snuck a quick glance at the pastries so that he could go back to what he needed to do. He had to make sure that everything was working before they left. He looked up and gave the commander a smile and said “good morning.” There didn’t seem to be anything suspicious but that didn’t mean that they wouldn’t encounter anyone or anything suspicious yet. He thought that this mission might be interesting. He stayed focus so that he could finish what he needed to do. He had to make sure that at least the flight systems were working and running smoothly. Eventually he was going to study the star maps so that he could get a good idea of where they would have to go. It was a good idea for him to be prepared for everything that could possibly happen while out there. [...] Judy stopped for a bit, as Ensign Niles at tactical reported, Crewman Graham greeted her, and Saya made her presence known. "I'd rather have the weapons cold and the rugelach hot than the other way around," she answered to Ensign Niles. Then, she turned to Saya, with a little chuckle. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Turbolift -> Bridge, USS Mac] As the doors to the turbolift parted, Isaiah stepped inside. His head rose briefly from the PADD in his hand only to find the lift itself was empty. Stepping inside, he called out his destination for the computer. "Bridge," he said softly. He could feel the turbolift ascending, but his concentration was on the readouts from astrometrics, or rather the lack of what they contained. There was still no sign of the Orunmila. He had hoped that something would turn up, but given that they were moving at Warp 9 towards Arkaria to deliver three prisoners, in his opinion the results wouldn't be as detailed as if they were participating in an organized grid search. Was that even the practical approach to take at this point, given what little they knew about the ship's disappearance? As the turbolift came to a stop and the doors parted, Isaiah stepped onto the bridge. He instantly caught a whiff of the pastries that Commander Eastman had with her. It seemed like a number of the crew on duty were a bit timid about actually trying her rugelach. Not out of fear of how it would taste, but clearly still wrestling with the interpreted conflict of protocol. It had even taken him some time to learn to relax a bit more around the Commander. Of course, he still wasn't going to call her Judy. As he strolled by, he picked up one of the pastries. It was still warm to the touch. "Thank you, Commander," he said as he then moved towards the science station. Though, after one bite, he came to a stop. He continued to chew as he turned back towards the commander and her tray. "May I?" he asked, hoping he could procure a second one. With his taste buds properly stated and his mouth no longer filled with the pastry, he strode over towards the science station. "At present, Astrometrics reports nothing on long range scans that points to the Orunmila," Isaiah reported. "I've got a few modifications in mind that may improve the sensitivity of our sensors slightly. I'll be sure to keep you apprised of the process."

Tag Doctor Baker [Deck 2 - Corridor leading to the Mess Hall] When Datan accepted the offer to join her in the Mess Hall, Thea smiled before she answered the junior officer. " Excellent" she replied as they both resumed walking and headed towards their intended destination. Thea always enjoyed being around other people so getting to know the Ensign better was definitely a bonus, although couldn't help but notice the way he held himself and how much taller he seemed in comparison to her own stature. Then again it wasn't a huge surprise to the CMO given that most people towered above her, including a certain newly promoted close friend and what she lacked in height, she made up for it in other ways. That thought always amused her, as her new dining companion asked if she had served with the Mac for long. That was an easy answer to give as she looked towards Datan as well as being appreciative of the title he had bestowed on her as opposed to her full rank. " I haven't ... this is only my third mission onboard the Mac ... prior to that I was stationed on Starbase Epsilon".As they reached the Mess Hall, Thea was also impressed with the Ensign's politeness as he gestured for her to enter first. " Thank you" she stated in a friendly tone as she stepped forward and entered the mess hall, once the doors had opened. There she waited for Datan to join her, before going over to the kitchen area to order.

[Mess Hall]
Elijah sat, straight backed, at an empty table with a bowl of soup before him. It was rather plain, he figured, cream of tomato - but having lived on it while in the Academy, he found it to be rather comforting. That, and he found enjoyment dipping bread into it. He cracked his neck, stretching it side to side, and rolled his shoulders; still attempting to rid his body of stiffness acquired during his sleep. He would, no doubt, have to miss a day of working out in an effort to cease a pattern forming. After all, how was he to attempt a bedside manner when all he could think about was unknotting his shoulders? He snorted quietly at his own ridiculous thoughts. Perhaps he could have another medical Ensign stand on his back.
He stirred the orange liquid in his bowl with one hand and turned the page of the book he’d brought with him. A ratted copy of Pride and Prejudice, a book his parents called Women’s Fiction as though that description degraded the novel in any way. Elijah was not foolish enough to believe books had any gender bias, despite whoever their author intended to read. It took him a few minutes before he turned the page again, undistracted by the noise of others; he’d long ago learned to fade out the environment in which he found himself.

"I've got a few modifications in mind that may improve the sensitivity of our sensors slightly. I'll be sure to keep you apprised of the process." [ Ens Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]Seeing Master Chief Ozu taking one of the pastries wasn't that big a shock for Joshua. After all, one didn't make Master Chief without some serious time in, and senior enlisted were, in some ways, closer to the senior officers than junior commissioned members were; that, and she was the current Chief Engineer, a department head in her own right even without a commission. And, she was even joking with the XO? Well that certainly was... a change of pace. Perhaps the Mac was one of Starfleet's newest, largest vessels, but it would seem that it was a somewhat more relaxed bridge environment than he had expected. And while the Crewman heading for the Helm did not take one, Lieutenant Quinn, on the other hand, certainly did. And Commander Eastman's own words, how she seemed to value those rugelach highly enough to be less than formal with accepting the report from the Tactical station, well, what was a very, very young ensign to so save conform to the relaxed bridge protocols he was observing? When in Rome, they say...However, he did not just leave his station, but he dutifully locked it first before making for the platter, and grabbing one of those sweets. "Thank you, Ma'am", replied he politely before returning to his board, eating the actually delicious pastry as he made his way back, and while he logged back in with one hand, he washed down the sweetness with some of the ship's most excellent coffee. Mister Quinn, Lieutenant Quinn now, spoke of tracking down the Orunmila on sensors and yet having to find a sign. But, given that those were strictly limited, then perhaps there could be a way to extend their reach, but without too much modification. Which led the young Ensign to an idea. "Commander, if our sensors won't reach that far, maybe we could also see what others have seen? Perhaps send out an all-ships subspace broadcast, and ask if anyone has seen her, or a debris field, or something out of the ordinary? I get their sensors aren't as refined as ours, but at least, it might feed us some leads?"

[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Bridge] Saya returned to the engineering station with a smile, glancing at the junior officers present. She wasn't familiar with most of them, except for the newly-promoted Lieutenant Quinn. In fact... Congratulations on your promotion, Lieutenant. I'm sure it was well-deserved. She sat at her station, then leaned forward abruptly as a yellow flash caught her eye on one of the diagnostics. It wasn't anything major, but since there wasn't much else going on, the issue was worth checking out. =/\= Chief Ozu to Crewman Som, there appears to be a minor power fluctuation somewhere in the secondary power systems for the photon torpedoes. See if you can track the problem from engineering. =/\= Saya turned to address the young officer at the tactical station. Ensign, my diagnostic detected a small power fluctuation in the weapons systems. Please check if you can detect it from your board. =/\=
