[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 2, Front Ear Station]Judy had her weekly meetings with Lt. Harmon, mostly business with a few baked goods thrown in, about the work of his department. She had, in one of their first meetings, arranged to procure new furniture for his people. She supposed this meeting was going to go less swimmingly. It was on Monday instead of the usual Wednesday, morning instead of mid-afternoon, and the topic on the meeting agenda wasn't Intelligence of furniture, but Matt Harmon's own indiscretions. As the time of the meeting came, Judy was seated at her conference table, little cheese knishes[fn] Small, Jewish pastries with a filling[/fn] and ice water laid out, ever the gracious host. She was, as usual, perfectly put together, her blonde hair combed neatly and her bifocals without a speck of dust on them, as was her elegant office, full of bookcases and family photos. She was ready.

Tag Matthew Harmon [Deck 2]Harmon was surprised when he was summoned on a Monday for his weekly brief. Eastman tended to be a fan of a schedule so this was the first time their meetings were held outside the usual time since they had begun. It could be for any reason though, she simply could have had another appointment on Wednesday or maybe she needed a new hip operation. He didn't think much of it beyond that. "Is she ready, Mabel?" he asked Judy's assistant as he approached the XO's office, wearing his newly steamed neat uniform.

[NPC - Ens. Mabel Henriksen - Mabel's Nook, Outside the XO's Office]Mabel looked up from her nook, decorated as it was with various colorful items, mostly pink. On her screen currently was a graph, specifically of transfer requests in and out. It was neatly color-coded, to boot. "She's waiting for you," she answered, with all her usual cheer. At the push of a button, she opened the door to the spacious office occupied by the First Officer. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy looked up when the doors opened, recognizing the figures at play. "Thank you, Mabel!" she called out to the young woman outside, who responded with a little wave. "Mr. Harmon, good morning," she then greeted the Lieutenant. "I hope the timing isn't too much of a pain for you, but with the grandchildren visiting, I don't have much slack in my schedule."

Tag Matthew Harmon [First Officer's Office]Harmon was in an uncharacteristically good mood this morning. He'd slept well for the first time in months, he'd actually eaten breakfast, he was up to date on all his work, and Hudson called in sick so wasn't in the office to bother him. He was having an excellent day. "Thanks," he said smiling at Mabel as he entered the office. "Good morning, ma'am," he said taking a seat. "I understand, it's no problem. Say hi to the grandkids for me," his demeanour was noticeably more chipper than usual. "What have we got as snacks today?" he asked, picking up and inspecting one of the small pastries.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy took a quick sip of water. "These are knishes, filled with a mixture of beaufort[fn]French cheese[/fn], comté[fn]French cheese[/fn], vacherin fribourgeois[fn]Swiss cheese[/fn], and appenzeller[fn]Swiss cheese[/fn]" she answered, effortlessly listing off the European cheeses, using a French accent for the first three and a German for the last. "The exact proportions are classified."Judy took one for herself. The taste was strong, somewhat nutty, a little earthy, all in all distinctly Alpine. The cheese was gooey, as the knishes were still warm, and the dough was just a little crunchy on account of being fried. There were hints of canola oil, in which they had been fried. At their size, Judy used two of her restrained bites to eat her knish.

Tag Matthew Harmon [First Officer's Office]Usually Harmon would interject to bring the discussion back to business, but this time, still riding his good mood, he sat patiently and listened to the Commander go on about different types of cheeses. Cheese was cheese as far as he was concerned, but she seemed somewhat passionate so didn't want to cut her off. As he listened he took a bite, it was ok, not the sort of food he'd usually pick out but it was fine. Eventually he decided to get things moving. "Anyway, I don't quite have a report for you to discuss this morning since I didn't have time to get it done early, but not much has changed since last week," he explained. "We've continued monitoring criminal elements, the movements of the Nyberrite Alliance, and the continued instability on Caldonina, however not much of note has changed."

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Harmon wanted to get to business, Judy could tell. She understood - that was what they were here for. "I'd like to talk about some ideas for action regarding Caldonia sometime, but that's a topic for Wednesday's meeting," she said, acknowledging his statement. She did indeed want to pitch some plan to the higher-ups, and even toyed with some ideas of her own. "I called you up here today because we need to talk about you."Judy adjusted her glasses, moving them maybe a few millimeters up her elongated nose, a regular sign of unease for her. "I'll preface this by saying you're not in trouble, and if we can get everything smoothed out, you won't get in trouble," she stated gently, aware that this sounded ominous. "We need to talk about your drinking habits," she added. For all her disarming, motherly presence, she couldn't fully take the sting out of these words.

Tag Matthew Harmon [First Officer's Office]He nodded in agreement about Caldonia. It was becoming more and more important that they decided how to address the situation as soon as possible. But then came the big reveal, for the real reason of this meeting. His private vices. He had a feeling his day was about to be ruined. You won't get in trouble if. Felt a lot like the kind of blackmail he was used to dispensing. Still, he tried to remain cool for now. "With all do respect, ma'am," he said with pursed lips, "I don't have a problem. I can handle my liquor. It does not effect my job performance, which is all that matters."

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy sighed. "You and I both know that's not quite accurate," she stated calmly. "At the end of the day, everything affects our job performance. Every choice, legitimate or not, ends up trickling down into our work lives. The question is whether the effect on our performance is large enough, and negative enough, to become my business."Judy was a prime example for this. The presence of her grandchildren on the station mostly distracted her, but in other senses also invigorated her. Yet, it did not reach the level where it merited an intervention. "When you wear shades on duty to deal with a hangover on a regular basis, and when you sometimes carry a flask in your uniform pocket, that becomes my business."Judy didn't like having to do this, but she had to.

Tag Matthew Harmon [First Officer’s Office] She was remaining calm and professional as always, despite knowing full well what she was discussing was beyond the professional and into the personal. He had always found Starfleet’s encroachment into its offices personal life to be incredibly intrusive. “Do you drink, ma’am?” he asked, “Many, most even, officers drink. Yes, I may drink more than most but it’s not a problem, it doesn’t effect my work,” his voice was starting to sound more frustrated. “You get my reports in time. They are good quality. When my skills are required, I utilise them well and serve this station and this fleet with distinction. What I do in personal life is of no consequence.” Tag: Judith Eastman

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy made a strategic choice at this juncture. She chose to engage with the personal question, to open up herself a little bit. "I used to drink," she said. "The doctors took that joy away from me. Booze doesn't really mix with blood thinners, unfortunately. I miss my Chardonnay very much."It was no secret that the First Officer was a cardiac patient. She had a bracelet on her left hand, informing first responders that she had an artificial heart. "In any case, Lieutenant, you carry a flask on duty sometimes. Setting aside whether you imbibe too much - we'll get to that - you have to admit that that's not a good look."Judy was firmly attuned to optics, a political instinct inherited from her mother. Her presentation, a mix of propriety, intellectualism, and maternal warmth, was natural, but it was self-aware. To her, having the outline of a flask visible through the uniform was an unthinkable lapse.

Tag Matthew Harmon [First Officer's Office]He was slightly taken aback when Eastman engaged with his point about how common it was for people to drink. She managed to knock him of balance if only for a moment with her statement. "I carry a flask occasionally, yes perhaps it is not a good look but I am Intelligence Officer. I'm not of the Diplomatic Corps, I'm not a media officer, I'm not a Command officer. I'm far less concerned with optics than I am with results. Indeed I am sure most reasonable senior officers would concur, as I presume you would, that in my role the most important thing is doing everything in my ability to preserve and protect the strategic and security interests of this station and of the Federation," he said his voice remaining calm. "If I do not deliver results then go ahead and fire me, however I doubt that Command would send you a replacement as experience as I am," his voice was now beginning to sound more frustrated.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy cracked a slight, almost amused smile. "Lieutenant, think about what you're saying here," she said calmly. "If I wanted to get rid of you, would I put my time into working on your behavior with you? Would I feed you?"This was true. Judy presented herself, and usually conducted herself, as a kindly grandmother, and she preferred it that way, but she could be cold and merciless when she needed to be. "The reason I'm talking to you about optics is because we, as the senior staff of a station, are public figures, and the rumor mill here churns at Warp 10. If the talk of the town is that you're an alcoholic, then we'll have to treat you as an alcoholic whether you are one or not. And that's before we even mention that you have subordinates, and what they think of you matters as well," she explained. It came down to those nasty humanoid tendencies, the ones they both had to work with.

Tag Matthew Harmon [First Officer's Office]Harmon noticed Eastmans slight smile, which served only to further annoy him. "This stations has many problems you could be spending your time working on," he deflected. "I was under the impression that Starfleet, and in particular officers as esteemed as you make decisions based on evidence, not on satisfying and indulging the rumour mill." He paused and took a deep breath. "Furthermore, I have two subordinates and they are fully aware that I have no problem and continue to function highly despite my proclivities."He knew he didn't have a problem, and he was astounded by her insinuation that he should be treated as an alcoholic regardless of if he is one or not.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy leaned back in her chair. "Lieutenant, since, as you said, I have many problems, don't you become another one," she rebutted his point, "You can be angry about it, but at the end of the day, your illusory drinking problem is my concrete Starfleet image problem."Judy was mentally preparing to pull rank if she had to, but she didn't want to. "Now, we still need to talk about whether it truly is just an image problem, or whether I need to be worried about you personally, young man," she transitioned. "I'd rather get this talked out just between us, if that's all right with you."She could've made explicit the threat of counseling, but she chose not to. The fact was that, with his age so close to that of Gerald and Lawrence, and his anger and petulance, Matt Harmon truly reminded Judy of her kids in this moment.
