About 10 days after the events of S1M5/S1E6 [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters]Six months in this corner of space had made two things clear: 1) Front Ear Station's systems were excessively prone to errors. 2) The engineering crew was, for the most part, very capable in making it work anyway. The natural solution, it followed, was to leverage the skill of the engineers into improving system reliability and resilience. For this purpose, small-group listening and brainstorming sessions were established, open to volunteers from the rank and file of engineering. This session came with a home-cooked dinner attached, at Judy's quarters. As Anna was out with friends, and Max took an evening shift, Judy had the home all to herself and her guest. She'd taken the time to whip up a proper three-course meal, a most enjoyable labor for her. Handling multiple dishes in tandem also provided a mental exercise not unlike the frequent multi-tasking of command. Guests approaching would find the doorframe supporting a mezuzah, a small symbol of the XO's Jewish faith. Inside stood a wooden dining table, already set, with a large pot of hot soup in the middle. Elsewhere in the spacious living area was a Baby Grand piano, a Grandfather clock, several sofas, and doors to several other rooms. With artwork, rugs, bookcases, and various family memorabilia throughout, the space was made to bear little resemblance to the sterile standard-issue Starfleet quarters. However, the heart of it all was the kitchen. Retrofitted at Judy's own expense, this space (part of the same extended room as the dining and living areas) boasted large countertops, a big stove, a two-temperature oven, and assorted cabinets. It was positioned such that, by looking over her (or his) shoulder, the cook could see all around the quarters. At present, that cook was Commander Judy Eastman, pairing a short-sleeved red dress (evoking the color of the command division without the formality of the uniform) with a well-worn white apron[fn]With the somewhat sassy text "your opinion wasn't in the recipe"[/fn], and putting the finishing touches on the main course. Even outside the door, the smell of fresh home cooking could be noticed, with garlic starring as the most prominent smell.

[Outside First Officers Quarters]
K'Dex brushed his uniform down slightly as he waited. He was waiting now for the rest of the guests to join, as he figured it was easier for them all to enter at once. He pulled out his PADD, and consulted his notes, leaning with his back against the wall while he waited. K'Dex didnt have much except for an extremely difficult idea, or a few other minor ideas he didnt care for as much.
He still wasn't sure about his coming tonight. He wasnt so far past his depression that he felt comfortable socializing. But at the same time, socializing seemed like the next real step in his progression, and his counselor agreed. He just... Wasnt sure how to go about it. He did the job, he did it at least moderately well. He'd even passed as an officer, he knew how to lead in the areas he was proficient. But to really bond with others was a questionable endeavor in his mind. Not to mention that even for a Caitian, he had grown up exhibiting several odd characteristics.
His counselor defined them as tendencies he'd acquired as a way of separating himself from others, and those then fed into his depression of being strange, off, unwanted. At the same times, those tendencies gave him comfort as being able to identify who he was.
K'Dex had that slight flicker of recognizing his eyes were glazing over, not even absorbing his notes, but lost in his own thoughts, tail swirling slowly.

[ Chief Ozu Saya - Outside Eastman Quarters] Saya approached Judy's quarters, many decks above her own, and noted the uniformed Caitian already outside the door. She was wearing a knee-length, dark blue dress and grey flats. She smiled up at the young officer and said gently, I don't believe J- Commander Eastman would have required uniform for this dinner, Ensign.
Are we waiting for everyone, then? she asked turning to lean against the way beside her subordinate. We could go in now. It's kind of you to want to not make the commander answer the door multiple times, but I spend so much time here, and I don't mind answering for her.She hadn't had much chance to get to know K'Dex, as seemed they were often on opposite schedules. Funny that, since she made the schedules, but she didn't do it intentionally, much of the assignment rotation was random unless there was someone with particular skills she wanted on a certain job.

Kaya knew it was an honor not to be squandered to be invited to a private dinner with the commanding officer and Commander Eastman was nearly universally well-regarded and even liked. Kaya's early interactions had the stilted awkwardness to be expected over the gulf of seniority, but not excessively so. By all rights, this should have been something to look forward to. Kaya was great at a party. But ten days ago, they'd found the Jupiter Star and its entire crew. Nothing had felt normal since then. "I brought wine," Kaya announced herself and held up a dark bottle. She attempted a convincing smile for Chief Ozu and K'Dex, the latter who she was surprised to see out and about. The Chief was wearing a smart dress but K'Dex had worn his uniform. Kaya's outfit was definitely Trill - a long light tunic with loose-fitting trousers. Her mothers would approve. Maybe this would be fine. The Commander was known for her cooking. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters]Judy covered the salmon with tinfoil, proud of her well-practiced main course. Being of only average human hearing, she was not aware of the goings-on outside her door. Her dogs, on the other hand, had excellent ears. The two were busy laying siege to the kitchen, hoping to snag some salmon (their favorite was without a doubt beef, but the salmon was good enough), but Bridge's ears were triggered by some vague noises outside. The plump little dog made his way towards the door, put his ear against it, and then began barking at it, all the while jumping up and down. "Down! Bridge, down!" Judy ordered, with a firmness that sounded much more military than her tone in uniform. "You little hooligan, down!"Tunnel, visibly pregnant with a litter of future corgis, followed to the door as well, drawing a sigh from Judy. "Both of you, down!" she ordered, and the dogs very reluctantly complied. Judy used the panel at the door to view what was outside (a high-tech replacement to the 20th-century peep-hole), and saw her dinner guests. She opened the door.

Tag K'Dex , Kaya Som and Judith Eastman [Outside First Officer's Quarters] K'Dex stood slightly as the chief approached, nodding. He sucked in air slightly, realizing his own awkwardness. He'd only come because Lt. Hugo had highly recommended he bring in his own perspectives from the most recent debacle, and because he'd been the one most recently running the audit of the Emergency Batteries. K'Dex would have just as easily sent in a report, but had been encouraged heavily to step forward more from his counselor as well as from his own self-reflections. That being said, he was still working to discover what his social side was to be. For now, it was easiest for himself to think of being the calm professional. If nothing else, the Commander was known for being quite social, and he could view some of this for himself. He leaned back against the wall, and responded. "It's not uncomfortable, and I've never collected much of anything resembling a wardrobe. But yes, I was just going to wait." A quick lick across his teeth betrayed his minor sense of nervousness, as his brain fought to keep in the moment versus criticizing what he was doing wrong. "If you feel comfortable entering, I'll ..." He trailed off as the last member joined them shortly, bringing a wine. He wondered if he should have brought a wine. Growing up, gifts were for true expressions of feelings, and meant more than he thought he truly felt at this meeting. His time with the Ferengi had totally abused the notion of gifts from even that reserved cultural trait. K'Dex wondered if he'd ever get those Rules of Acquistion out of his head. Hearing them constantly for 2 years during his formative stages had really stuck. That, and he didn't truly disagree with most of them. He needed to get out more. Replace old memories. He stood suddenly as he heard barks, followed by the doors whisking open. "Commander. Ah, Thank you for having us." He said, though sneaking a few furitive glances at the animals. Most animals K'Dex managed to get along with, simply by allowing each it's own space, but the more excitable the animal, the harder it was. Especially the persistently excitable ones. It just felt wrong for animals to be that interested in him, especially when he was at his most languid. That, and K'Dex had definitive boundaries when it came to being licked or rubbed against.

[Outside XO's Quarters]
Will reference the map on his PADD as he winded through the corridors to find the quarters of the Executive Officer. The computer had given him directions verbally but they weren't much use when he ended up back at the turbolift the third time. So, he asked a passing Officer for directions and after a copious amount of 'sirs', he was the owner of a PADD with the directions he needed! And there he was, just down the hall from the door as he saw two other Officers standing by the aperture he had his sights on. With a bit of a jog, he tried to catch up to their position and was closing the distance nicely. It wasn't until he was only a meter of so away that he tripped over his own feet and found himself face first on the deck. Real smooth.
"Ow... that's... sturdy construction... ow" he said in a mumble as he got up and brushed any dirt off his uniform, his dress uniform. He wanted to dress to impress and he doubted that slamming into the deck next to his fellow officers was going to win him any points. "Um... hello everyone" he said with a meek wave as he tried to not look embarrassed.

[ Chief Ozu Saya - Judy's Quarters] Saya listened as the Caitian explained his wardrobe choice and nodded a greeting to Kaya when the Trill arrived. Well, the station is a good place to develop those tastes, Ensign.
Petty Officer, I'm pleased you came. I'm sure Commander Eastman will appreciate the contribution. Her head tilted as she heard the corgis begin barking, announcing their presence quite thoroughly. She didn't even have time to say, No need to ring, before the door swooshed open and revealed the XO. As they moved to enter, another young, very new ensign made an appearance, and nearly took them all out tripping over his own feet. Saya had to close her eyes and shake her head when she realized he was wearing a dress uniform. She wondered whether she should mention it, as she had with K'Dex. Ensign, she said mildly. No harm. I hope you didn't hurt yourself. Deciding to not further his embarrassment, Saya hung back and let the others enter so that she could whisper to the hapless ensign, There was really no need to wear a dress uniform, Ensign. If you're uncertain in the future, please feel free to ask.

The doors opened and Kaya was treated to the unusual sight of the XO in an apron, her two little dogs scurrying about, and lushly cluttered quarters. Kaya crouched down and held out her hand to the Corgi. Behind her the new human from Ops face planted. From her low vantage point, Kaya just stared at his through the door for a moment. "I brought wine," she repeated to Eastman and scritched behind Bridge's ear. "It's Bolian from that duty-free shop by the Beta." Ozu Saya Judith Eastman William Waring K'Dex

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters]With a natural personal warmth, Judy greeted her visitors. "Good evening. Thank you for coming," she first acknowledged the Caitian. Then came Kaya with a bottle of wine. With Judy's medical limitations, she supposed this would be her one daily drink - and some enjoyment for the guests. "You didn't have to. Much appreciated," she said, as her attention then shifted again, to the fallen young man. "Go ahead and settle down at the table," the XO urged K'Dex and Kaya, allowing her to tend to the human in the dress uniform. Saya was already with him, but Judy nevertheless felt a need to come in. "Are you okay? Should I get a dermal regenerator? Or an icepack, maybe?" she asked, her mothering tendencies on full display. Bridge was happy to get petted by this new person visiting. After a brief sniff, he moved to try and lick the hand petting him, with his big, sloppy corgi tongue. Tunnel sniffed more cautiously at the furry one (K'Dex). Judy had seemed to treat this one like a person, but the fur was not like people.

Tag K'Dex , William Waring , Ozu Saya , and Kaya Som [First Officer's Quarters] K'Dex allowed the Chief to enter first, one part deferrence to her rank, 2 parts because she was apparently quite comfortable here. Then he quite promptly, though distracted momentarily by an over-eager ensign joining them, slipped into the door and to the side, out of the way of traffic, and purposefully opposite the excitable animal that made quick friends with the crewman. This, however, brought him directly between a wall and the other creature. Thankfully, this creature seemed more cautious than the other one, sniffing slightly. He let his tail, which had become quite stiff when the dogs made their presence known, flick slightly, and flexed his claws briefly. No more than simple animal posturing that K'Dex tended to exhibit anyway, making his presence slightly more dominating for his own space, but peaceful enough that he wasn't encroaching on others. It apparently was more impressive to humans though, for the Ferengi had him do that on several an occasion during a negotiation starting to slip away. K'Dex let his focus move away from the creature, and began realizing something else. A smell... multiple, strong smells. A light soup. Garlic. And... His mouth opened slightly, and his tongue pulled across his teeth. Fish. He couldn't tell if it was fresh or salt water fish, with the garlic overpowering most of the smell, but the smell of fish was most definitely there. Muted. Hidden. His tail began to wave back and forth behind him, betraying his already obvious sense of excitement. He sat himself down, choosing briefly an appropriate spot. He left the seats at the heads of the table open, and the seats immediately to the right of those spots, for the Commander, Chief, and possibly injured person who would suddenly be under care. He found a suitable middle seat where he could face the kitchen, and relaxed ever so slightly into it. It was well made, and mostly comfortable. Too often he found chairs were often designed by those who didn't think about tails.

[XO's Quarters] "I think I am ok..." he said sheepishly as he picked himself up off the deck "I appreciate your concerns ma'am. Yours as well... ma'am" he said, looking for the rank insignia on Saya but not seeing it anywhere on her outfit. It was only upon remembering the roster he had read he realized that he wasn't just the XO that he made of fool of himself in front of, but his Department Superior as well. Perfect... just perfect ... "Oh... I don't need a ice pack ma'am. Besides a... bruised ego of course" he brushed off his uniform again and nervously looked around "I was hoping to make a good impression for those present. It seems I gave a show instead." he crossed his hands behind his back "Something smells good. What is it?"[/color] he asked as he tried his best to act casual. This was the first real opportunity he had to make a good impression with his superiors and so far he no doubt seemed clumsy, nervous, and foolish. That is what he wanted to avoid yet here he was. He tried to play it off with the comment of the food but he knew it was a poor attempt to move on and rapidly focus on something else. Unfortunately, embarrassment avoidance wasn't a course at the Academy... Tags: Judith Eastman Ozu Saya

[ Chief Ozu Saya - Judy's Quarters] Saya offered the young ensign a comforting smile and entered Judy's quarters. As long as you aren't injured, she said mildly. She smiled at Kaya giving Bridge attention and crouched to give Tunnel a scratch. She looks like she's close to popping. It shouldn't be much longer, should it?Standing, Saya started to brush her hands on her dress, then thought better of it and stepped into the kitchen to wash them at the sink. Can I do anything to help? Saya had spent a lot of time in various kitchens with Judy, having been taught to cook by the older woman, and had become comfortable in this one in the few months since their arrival on the station. In fact, if she'd had more time, she probably would have contributed to the dinner herself, but with the massive number of repairs the station needed after the incident with the shadow beings, most of the engineers had been working double or triple shifts to get back to some semblance of functionality. It seemed that Waring's tripping was not an isolated awkwardness but rather a whole vibe that threatened to last the entire evening. Sad puppy, Kaya thought with an internal cringe, then approached the table where some glasses were waiting. K'Dex, too, was in rare form, nearly silent as usual. Get to the wine, quick, or we'll never survive. She opened the bottle and held it up to her nose. It smelled bright and buttery - leave it to Bolians to pay attention to the little pleasures. Even Avi. Shit. Kaya wasn't supposed to thinking of her lay at the station who'd disappeared without warning or good-bye. No. Tonight was about stilted conversation with co-workers and senior officers and there was no place for meaningful matters of the heart. "Who wants?" she asked loudly with a smile to clear her head. She poured plenty of the sun-colored wine into a glass for herself and set the bottle down for anyone to help themselves to. "It's not synth..." she said quietly to K'Dex. "Relax, huh?" Judith Eastman Ozu Saya K'Dex William Waring

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters]Judy shook her head and smiled good-naturedly at the young Ensign. "Just take it easy, young man. Wind yourself too tight, and you snap," she advised, speaking casually but from a place of great experience. She'd made more first impressions than she cared to estimate, after all. "She's just a couple of weeks away," she informed Saya, of the rotund corgi. Inside, Judy turned to her Chief Engineer and chuckled at her offer. "You can eat, young lady. Everything else is already taken care of," she quipped. She took off her apron, hung it by a hook along with the rest of the impressive collection she and Max had accrued over the decades, and then took a place not at the head of the table but near the middle, where she could reach everyone and their plates. "Our first course for tonight is matzo ball soup, a traditional Jewish meal. The soup is a relatively simple vegetable soup, although chicken soup would've been more traditional. The matzo balls - kneidlach in the original Yiddish - are relatively simple pastry balls, and they've been soaking in the soup for a bit to absorb its flavor. I can try to give you just soup with no matzo balls, if you'd rather."Still standing, she dispensed the soup with a very well-practiced motion, accounting for any requests given to her. "Now, why don't we start with introductions?" she suggested. The dogs both stared up at her, begging for their share of this course.
