FRONTIER RulesWelcome to FRONTIER! In order to keep our site running smoothly, and provide a pleasant, fun, and drama-free experience for all our members, our community follows a set of rules. Please be mindful of them, as well as of the Golden Rule, cliché as it may sound: "Treat others as you yourself would like to be treated". This handy table of contents will help you locate the different segments of our rules, or you can just scroll down the page. As the site grows, we may revise and change these rules as needed, to keep the experience as good as it can be.

Our Canon and Universe
Our roleplay is set in Star Trek's Prime Universe, in the year 2381.
We consider Enterprise, The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and the TOS and TNG movies to be part of our canon. We consider neither Discovery, nor the Animated Series, nor Picard to be part of our canon.
Our missions and events are part of site canon. Down Time threads are part of site canon, unless otherwise stated.
Major points established via missions, and other important components of our unique fleet canon, will be noted here as they are established. We may choose to selectively incorporate into our canon material that is not part of it, including worlds, species, and narratives, as needed. Beta canon species, if they appear on the site, are inherently incorporated into the canon.
Content Rules
Our site is rated roughly PG-13, or 1 (out of 3) on language, 2 (out of 3) on violence, and 1 (out of 3) on sexual content. Content on our site may deviate from this rating, but not excessively so. Content on the Discord may be raunchier, but within reason.
In addition, we ask that you conduct yourself in a manner that is constructive, positive, kind, and tolerant. We ask that you strive to minimize conflict with other writers on the site.
Content that demeans or offends on the basis of race, sex, gender identity/sexual orientation, religion, political ideology, national origin, or other attributes of the sort is forbidden. Advocating violence, discrimination, or illegal activity is forbidden as well.

Posting RulesOur roleplay is written in the third-person past tense. Your posts should conform to the realistic bounds of your character's ability and skill set in the Star Trek universe. Posts that will have a major effect on the course of the mission should be checked beforehand with a Command-Level Officer. Please avoid godmodding - doing things to other people's characters and/or NPCs without prior permission. Please maintain your posts in a format that is readable. Please refrain from metagaming (using information that you know, but your character does not). Please make sure that you are prepared to face the in-character consequences of your character's actions. Please use a location tag at the start of your post, so we can know where your character is. We have two major RP environments - our ship (the USS Mac) and our station (Front Ear Station). In any given month, the ship will run a more serious mission, while the station plays host to a more freeform event. We ask that you choose at least one to post on in each month, and that you prioritize that one. In addition, you may use the "Down Time" board to create adventures of your own with other members, if you have the time. If you cannot maintain the posting expectations, you may switch to DTRP (Down Time only) posting. This will put your promotion trajectory on hold, but release you from posting expectations. We do not have a formal minimum post length, but we strongly discourage short 1-2 sentence posts. We understand that it can be hard to write long posts, but when your posts are too short, it doesn't give much for your writing partners to react to, so we ask you to be considerate and make sure your posts aren't too short. However, keep in mind that longer is not always better. It is not the length of your post that matters, but how you use your post. Be sure to check out our Style Guide, for formatting help.

Activity RulesPosting Requirements:If you have not posted for five days, and are not on a Hiatus, you will be marked "inactive" on the roster. Your CLOs should contact you at this point to figure out what's wrong, and how you can be helped to post again. If you have not posted for ten days, and that time was not covered by a Hiatus, you will be removed from the site due to inactivity. If you are removed from our site due to inactivity, you may request to return. However, if you are removed twice, you will be blacklisted and not permitted to return. If you expect you will be posting at a relatively slow pace, please let your CLOs know so they can accommodate you. Being a busy person is fine. If you are struggling to post due to lack of engagement, you are encouraged to reach out, so we can support you and help you be engaged. Hiatus:At any time, for any reason, you may file for temporary Hiatus. This is a period, up to 30 days in length (extendable in extraordinary circumstances) during which you are exempt from all posting requirements. At the conclusion of your temporary Hiatus, you will be expected to return to posting. If you expect to leave us for a longer time, or perhaps forever, you are encouraged to file for an Extended Hiatus. This is a semi-permanent departure from posting, in which you will be removed from the roster. You may end your Extended Hiatus and return to the Frontier at any time, but it may be at reduced rank. In particular, if you were a department head before taking an Extended Hiatus, there's a decent chance someone else will have been promoted to that position in your place. Requests should be filed in the appropriate board. Down-Time Role-PlayWe also have the option of DTRP (Down-Time Role-Play) status. This is a place for players who want to RP, but aren't able to commit to the posting requirements of the ship or station. Any character - new or established - can be placed on DTRP status for any month. This gives the player a great deal of flexibility. They can ask anyone to RP with them (and players are encouraged to be involved in DTRP as they are able, but will be expected to prioritize missions/events). DTRPers won't be expected to follow the posting expectations for missions/events, though they will be expected to observe a minimum level of posting: minimum of one post a month in any down time threads, unless a hiatus is requested. Active players who wish to transfer to DTRP can do so, but their character will not accumulate MEGS, which will slow down their eligibility for promotions and alts. DTRPers can transition to mission/event posting, but must meet posting requirements. In general, you can move in and out of DTRP status as you please. However, if you were slated for DTRP-only because you weren't able to keep up with mission/event posting, please check in with an admin. At the admins' discretion, new players whom we feel may need a little bit of help getting used to our play style and rules may be asked to engage in DTRP only for a brief period. Admins may make suggestions and request changes to bring posts in line with our standards. Once the player shows that they consistently follow posting guidelines, they will be permitted to join the current mission or event. Players may also choose to DTRP until a new mission/event begins if they don't want to jump into the middle.

Character CreationWe know our application is long. This is so you will think deeply about your character's life story and what makes them tick. If you want help preparing your application, we're happy to provide it. Your character's life events and accomplishments should be appropriate and attainable for a person of their age and background. Allowed species:
Most sentient species (Alpha and Beta canon) are playable on the Frontier. Species that are not allowed are: - Borg (non-Liberated)
- Q and any other omnipotent species
- Species 8472
- Tholians
The site administration retains the right to expand this list and reject species as the need may arise. For beginners, we recommend one of the well-known species, on which there is a lot of canon material: - Andorians
- Bajorans
- Betazoids
- Cardassians
- Ferengi
- Humans
- Klingons
- Romulans
- Trill
- Vulcans
Hybrids of multiple species should be "balanced" (i.e. they should not enjoy all the superior attributes of each species and none of the drawbacks). Character Features and Traits:Please remember that any backstory element, character trait, or condition you give your character is something that is a part of them, and you should be prepared to account for it. For example, if your character is older and suffers from joint issues, they should be less agile and athletic than younger characters; if your character was abused by a parent or lover, they'll have a harder time trusting than most. A point of particular note here is vices. Addiction is a serious disease, with considerable impacts on the life and functioning of the addict, whether they're still using or not, and is therefore very different from, and more serious than, an occasional indulgence. A character suffering from addiction should be written appropriately. The Three "Tracks":Your character may be either an enlisted crewmember, a commissioned officer, or a civilian. The enlisted are typically more hands-on types, while officers are generalists and leaders. In practice, the selection between the two is mostly driven by the character's story and background, as the roleplay experience is similar. Civilians offer a different experience, as they may be engaged in a variety of different professions. As a general rule, Commissioned characters will start as Ensigns, and Enlisted will start as Crewmen. Rank "Rollover"If you choose to replace your civilian character with a Starfleet one, either placing the civilian on permanent hiatus or on DTRP-only status, you may roll over MEGS accumulated by the civilian, to start the new character at a corresponding rank, up to a maximum rank of Lt. j.g. or PO2. Special Launch Period Rank Rule (NO LONGER IN EFFECT):
As a new site, we have vacancies at higher ranks. Consequently, until the end of March, 2020: Players arriving from Shadowfleet, using a character they had used there, may choose to start said character at a rank as high as Lieutenant or Chief Petty Officer. Such players, using a new character, may choose to start their character at a rank as high as Lieutenant Junior Grade or Petty Officer 2nd Class. The adoption of a higher rank should be reflected in the form of a prior service record in the application, and voiced to the leadership. Players may choose a rank at or below that to which they are entitled, if they so choose.

Promotion RulesIn your time on FRONTIER, your character may be promoted up the ranks. Promotions on FRONTIER, beyond the in-character chain of command, are a token of a player's position as a member of our community. As a result, the Admins consider a holistic standard of activity and behavior reflected in our Promotion Expectations in giving promotions, as well as a measurement we call MEGS, short for "Missions/Events in Good Standing". One MEGS reflects one month during which you posted on at least one posting environment (station, ship), with no activity, content, or OOC behavior issues. Good Standing is determined based on the rules and expectations at the discretion of the Admins, and will not be publicized. Players engaged in DTRP only, who spent more than half the month on hiatus, or who joined more than halfway into the month, will not be eligible for MEGS. As a general rule, promotions for Commissioned characters will be given for every 3-6 MEGS, and for Enlisted characters every 2-4 MEGS. The Admins reserve the discretion to delay promotion beyond this threshold. Players who have faded (quit posting without filing Hiatus) will be required to attain an additional 3 MEGS for their next promotion eligibility. Department Head status will be granted to players who have maintained Good Standing, made a persistently positive contribution to the community, and been a supportive presence on the site, as outlined in the Promotion Expectations. Department Heads will hold the minimum rank of Lieutenant or Chief Petty Officer, except in extraordinary circumstances. Department Heads will be promoted only at the Administration's discretion, and should not be regarded as automatic. Promotion to the ranks of Lieutenant Commander or Senior Chief Petty Officer will be given to players who have met the other requirements, have demonstrated commitment and made contributions to our community, and who run a mission, as described in our Promotion Expectations. No promotions to Lieutenant Commander and Senior Chief Petty Officer will be given to characters who will not serve as Department Heads, except in extraordinary circumstances. Promotions to the ranks of Master Chief Petty Officer, Commander, or Captain, will be given only in extraordinary circumstances. Transitions between the Commissioned, Enlisted, and Civilian tracks will be made with Admin approval, with the rank determined by the player's MEGS, the position they will be assuming, and other circumstances. As noted elsewhere, Alt characters will be promoted at half the pace of primary characters, and only up to the ranks of Lieutenant or Chief Petty Officer, except where the primary character associated with the Alt is a civilian.

Disciplinary Rules
We have zero tolerance for plagiarism. If you are caught plagiarizing, you will be given one chance to correct yourself and never do it again.
For other offenses against our rules, a light or borderline violation may result in only a verbal warning, but if it is more serious, there will be a three-strike policy in play.
First strike: formal warning; note on player's record; possible delay of promotion. Second strike: formal warning; demotion by one rank. Third strike: ban.
It is our hope that no player will ever approach three strikes.

Alt AccountsOur site generally allows each OOC member up to two characters: one primary, and one alt. A third account will be allowed on a case-by-case basis. After attaining three consecutive MEGS (Missions/Events in Good Standing), players will be eligible to apply for an alt. The process is as follows: - Contact an admin to confirm your eligibility.
- Create a separate alt account on our site, associated with the same email and PB global account as your primary.
- Submit an application the usual way, making sure to designate somewhere that the character is an alt.
- After approval, begin posting.
In most ways, an alt is similar to your primary character. The alt may receive awards such as POTM (if the primary isn't an admin), post in missions, events, and Down Time threads, and be promoted. An alt may have the full active standing, or be DTRP-only. You are permitted to "Double Up" - feature both of your characters in the same thread. Alts are expected to meet the same activity requirements as primary accounts. In some regards, however, an alt is different from a primary: - An alt may not be promoted above the ranks of Lieutenant or Chief Petty Officer.
- An alt may not be a command-level officer or Department Head.
- Alts will be promoted at "half-speed", meaning they will require twice as many MEGS as primary characters for promotion.
- Alts do not entitle a player to an additional vote in site polls, such as POTM.
The limitations on rank, positions, and promotion do not apply to an alt whose primary character is a civilian. We recommend that you look at your alt as a separate character from your primary, with their own story. Characters that are too closely tied to your primary, especially family members, are more suited to being NPCs.
