[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] Ari had been happy to wait the week for his return to service, a few extra days working on his own projects until he had to go back to work wasn’t the worst thing in the galaxy. However he’d recently heard of an upcoming survey mission on Kerelia. He was naturally curious about the planet the Federation had built the station around and if he hadn’t misunderstood the notes he’d read they wanted some form of colony on the surface although he wasn’t sure what the end goal was. Either way a chance to set foot on an undeveloped world was quite exciting. True there was little need for a Stellar Cartographist, Astrophysicist, Mathematician or Statistician upon the surface for the planned field work but Ari could help with botanical and geological sample collecting with the best of them. It seemed like an interesting first exercise after returning to active service but there was a small barrier in the way. Medical Authorisation. He needed to be cleared for active service due to being put on medical leave after the joining. The truth was he had no idea what sort of assessment he’d have to pass. Maybe it’d just be a simple tick box exercise or perhaps the doctor would have deeper concerns. It might even just depend on the Doctor’s personal knowledge of the Trill. Either way he’d made an appointment with the Doctor aboard Front Ear Station, not just any medical officer either but the Chief Medical Officer herself. Hopefully that wasn’t a bad sign, the Ensign certainly didn’t consider himself important enough to garner such attention. Taking a moment he pulled his top down slightly to make sure it was tidy, it had been many months since he'd worn his uniform and he didn't wish to appear slovenly. Pressing the entry button on the sickbay’s doors he heard a small buzz to alert the present medical staff as he stepped inside and seeing a few officers walking around, seemingly busy, he took a seat off to the side to wait until someone was ready. Eventually one of the uniformed medical officers, a nurse probably, approached and asked him if he needed any help. Standing he smiled “Good Morning. I am Ensign Ari Kiax, I have an appointment with Dr. Baker.” Thea Baker

[ Tania Logan - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] " Ah the Doctor said that you would be dropping in today, if you'd like to follow me, I'll take you over " Tania replied warmly, before leading the Trill scientist over to an available bio bed, where she then spoke to him again. " Take a seat and Doctor Baker will be with you in a moment".Ensuring that Ari was settled, Tania then left him momentarily to let the CMO know that her patient had arrived. ************************** [ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] There was definitely still an advantage of having her quarters on the same deck as Primary Sickbay and when she wasn't on mission with the Mac, Thea could be found in her favourite domain. As much as the CMO enjoyed splitting her time between the ship and the station, as well as the experiences and advantages both had, especially when it came to Isaiah and her career, there was just something about being in a station Sickbay that always had that allure. That was likely due to her previous posting, not to mention the residents that she treated or checked up on. However after finishing with her last patient and Tania informing her that Ensign Kiax was here, the Doctor was looking forward to meeting the joined Trill as one she always thought it important to get to know the newbies and secondly because of his medical history and the reason why he was here today. Even now Thea was fascinated with the joining process and the relationship between host and symbiont, which had stemmed from the Academy and knowing one Tela Arisa, a joined Trill that she was friends with back on Epsilon. Which reminded Thea that she needed to call Tela soon as she walked towards the bio bed and Ari. " Hello Ensign, how are you?". Ari Kiax

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] The young woman led him across the sickbay over to an empty bed which he sat on the edge of as instructed. “Thank you.” he said with a polite smile as she left to inform the CMO of his arrival. Ari let his gaze run across the sickbay from his quiet corner and noted the facility was more impressive than what he’d expected from a frontier outpost. Then again he was still surprised a vessel as impressive as the USS Mac was stationed way out here. Perhaps this location was more than just scientifically interesting, maybe it had some tactical value to the Federation that, as an Ensign, he simply had no knowledge of. Perhaps D’yer would have been able to work it out but then he had far better connections than Ari did. His musing where interrupted as a rather young, admittedly pretty, woman approached. He knew her from the personnel files he had reviewed so as to not embarrass himself in front of the senior staff. He was still shocked that such a young officer was the Chief Medical Officer for this posting, he could only assume she was pre-eminently talented. Standing respectfully he smiled brightly at the senior officer, he always felt more comfortable around highly ranked Medical and Science staff than he did around those from the Tactical or Command divisions. “Dr. Baker.” he greeted politely. “I am fine thank you, all things considered.”Resuming his seat at the edge of the table he added. “And thank you for seeing me on such short notice.” Thea Baker

[ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] As the Ensign greeted her politely, before retaking his seat at the edge of the bed. Thea smiled happy to see him looking comfortable or so she hoped as he also thanked her for seeing him on short notice. ' That's good to hear and not a problem at all, I'm glad that I was able to see you before we headed out again on the Mac".Thea then picked up a tricorder, which was standard procedure for a check up and prepared to begin. Although not before talking to Ari first. " Don't worry it'll be just a simple routine check up, make sure that everything is okay with you and the symbiont, that kind of thing" she explained then added. " Do you have any questions?".

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] His eyes followed the tricorder although there was no real anxiety in his expression, just a vague sort of interest. “I haven’t seen her yet, the Mac I mean, I’ve never even seen another ship of the class before. I have to admit I’m rather excited for my first assignment.”Thinking for a moment on her question he shook his head slightly. “Not really, I mean the Symbiosis Institute where only able to give me some advice, some books to read and an apartment with counselling sessions after t… the unexpected joining.” he said after a slight hesitation. “I’m not really sure what else can be done on the issue beyond a check up.” he admitted. Part of him wanted to say nothing, lie, feign ignorance and pretend to be ready for anything. However instead he simply said what he was thinking. There were few more foolish things he could think of than lying to your new Doctor. “Did the Commission send anything across to you?” he asked. “I informed them of my posting as soon as I found out. They can be quite… protective… of the joined individuals. A certain sense of responsibility I think.”And Ownership he added silently Sometimes he thought the Commission was more concerned with keeping control of Joined Trill than worrying about how they personally felt. Then again he had no doubt they believed the Trill far less important than the Symbiont. Thea Baker

[ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] Ari's gaze towards the tricorder was a natural response and one that she had seen many times as the Ensign admitted that he hadn’t seen the Mac yet and how excited was for his first assignment. " She's a beauty alright and that's also good to hear, I'm sure that you'll fit in well with us all" she replied in a friendly tone as he then answered about having any questions. Thea listened as she began the scan and if there was anything she had learned over the years was to let a patient open up and be honest. So as Ari spoke Thea got a better idea of the Trill's background and how he was dealing with the sudden and unexpected joining. " That's understandable Ensign and whilst I understand how sudden it was for you, you're not alone and I'm always around if you need to talk".Of course Thea could recommend a Counsellor to help Ari further but would leave that up to him as he then asked about the Commission. Again Thea had some understanding of the Commission and their protectiveness thanks to her friendship with Tela. " They did and I can understand with that, you see I have a Trill friend back on Epsilon so I know about the Commission and how they can be, but I assured them that you would be well looked after and besides I've always considered the host to be just as important as the symbiont".

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] “I do hope so. So long as I don’t embarrass myself and think I’m a Chief Tactical Officer when talking to a superior.” he joked, mostly joked, at her comment. He’d only had a few slip ups in the past month which was a far sight better than the month before that. Even at his most pessimistic he was aware that he was getting better at distinguishing memories however he also felt a certain sense of self slipping away. He was changing from Ari Katren, with Kiax’s memories, into another Kiax host who was starting to feel like simply a new chapter in a single life form. The idea made him rather uncomfortable at times. After all he’d turned down the idea of applying for the Initiate Program after graduating from the Academy, he had the grades for it, but not the interest or the ambition. His parents had been disappointed, they saw all the potential for upward social movement he was capable of that they’d been denied, but then he had become Joined anyway a little less than a decade later. They had been overjoyed. Oh how lucky he was they told him. Others had said the same. Then there had been others whispering behind his back, saying that he was undeserving of the gift he’d been granted, especially a Symbiont with as prestigious a career as Kiax. The only Trill he’d met so far who’d actually shown any concern for him whatsoever was his sister, it had been a small but required mercy during those months on his homeworld. Smiling gratefully at her offer he nodded slightly. “Thank you, I appreciate the offer and I’ll certainly keep it in mind Doctor.”At the mention of her friend he smiled, something a little more on the smirking side, his eyes filled with humour at her statement around the importance of the Host. It was genuinely the first time anyone had ever said as such to him. “Well I’m certainly glad to hear it.” he told her. “If your friend is joined then maybe you can ask them if they’ve any tips for me.” he added with good humour. His smile faded as he frowned for a moment. “Starbase Epsilon? I believe D’yer visited it back when he was a junior lieutenant serving on the USS Bulwark, Galaxy Class, impressive ship.” he murmured before blinking and realising he’d almost let the memory sweep him away, it was a new one, or rather a newly accessed one. Things where still jumbled but at least the more he recalled from the previous hosts the easier it came to sort through their proper chronological order. His grin returned. “The Commission gave up a little easily to be honest. If I am remembering right it’s because the Kiax symbiote has a… reputation, well founded or not, for being a little dismissive of the Commission. So they don’t try to hold on too tightly out of fear that they might lose what relationship they do have with it, him… uhh me.” he paused and rubbed as his temples. Folding his palms on his lap he glanced around the room as he added. “I recently attended the opening of an establishment called Delirium and met First Officer Eastman along with a few other members of Starfleet stationed here. They all seemed very pleasant. It would appear I have been quite lucky with this assignment.” Thea Baker

[ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] Even though Ari meant it as a joke, Thea knew that it was likely hiding a lot more underneath the surface than he was willing to let on. However she wasn't going to press him into answering more than he wanted to and so grinned at his comment, wanting to put him at ease rather than make him uncomfortable. " I wouldn't worry about that and I'm sure in time, those experiences of the other hosts will prove to be very useful".That's what Tela had led her to believe anyway and was always fascinated to hear about her other hosts, their lives, how it had helped Tela with discovering who she was and how it could help with her career as it was now. When Ari then accepted her offer of being there to talk to if needed, Thea's grin became a warm smile as he acknowledged what she had said about Tela and how she could perhaps offer some tips to him. " I can definitely put you in touch with her, she's been a host for the last ten years so no doubt she'll have some great advice and she's helped me a lot".Thea was being honest when she said that, before Ari shared with her that D'yer had possibly visited Epsilon when he served aboard the Bulwark and spoke about how impressive the ship was. " Then there's a good chance that Tela knows him and I think the Bulwark also paid a visit when I was there but I will admit that the Galaxy Class is a fine ship, my late Father served on one".When Ari then spoke about the Commission, Thea listened and now understood some of their behaviour towards the Kiax symbiote and why they wanted to maintain a relationship. " That does explain a few things but at the same time, I don't blame Kiax for being that way with them".As talk then turned to his visit to the new club Delirium, a place that was on Thea's list to try at some point and how he had met Judy and a few others. Thea smiled again, especially at his comment about how lucky he was with this assignment. " I would agree with that and I've heard great things about Delirium, it's also nice to meet people outside of normal work hours".

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] “So I’ve been told.” he returned with an amused half-smile. It was, after all, perhaps the greatest benefit of the joining aside from becoming a pseudo-celebrity on Trill although in his opinion that was far from a positive. In a more genuine note he added. “Hopefully those skills will benefit the Mac and the Station.”Genuinely thankful at the offer he considered that the Doctor’s friend, Tela, might be more helpful than the formal and rigid members of the Institution that had tried to “help” him. A more informal, flexible, conversation might go far further than those previous efforts. He nodded slightly at the idea that Tela might have known D’yer. “It’s certainly possible. I have yet to manage to sort through all of even just D’yer’s memories. Even if she didn’t know him it would not surprise me if she knew one of the Kiax in some form or another. After all I’m not sure about your friend’s Symbiont but Kiax has been alive for at least 588 years.” There was no reason not to share that last bit of info, especially if it ended up being medically relevant, he doubted the Commission had been kind enough to share what they considered to be Kiax’s “private” information. Ari’s smile widened into something approaching pride, pride in his past lives, something that was entirely new and unusually positive. Maybe he was getting used to all of this after all. “Yes they are rather displeased with how long I, that is to say we, have chosen to serve Starfleet and the Federation.” he smiled wickedly at that as if their displeasure only made service more rewarding. He had inherited more than a few lives worth of hosts who had disliked the Commission’s way of doing things. That added with his own experiences made him rather biased against them. “It was wonderful. I’ve only visited Science Stations, and a few outposts during the war, nothing with facilities like that.”Considering for a moment he asked. “Is there anything you have found particularly interesting about this assignment? If you don’t mind me asking. I’ve heard that there have been some scientific forays down to the planet but none of the files I could access on Trill had any details about this outpost, the planet or the Mac’s typical outings.” he paused and smiled somewhat shyly. “Ah… if that isn’t too rude.” Thea Baker

[ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] " I'm sure they will" Thea replied sincerely as Ari answered her about the skills of his hosts being useful whilst serving on Front Ear and no doubt they would when he least expected them too. When the conversation steered towards her offer to put him in touch with Tela and how she may of known D'yer. The CMO smiled as Ari confirmed that it could be possible that Tela did know his last host or failing that one of his others due to the age of the Kiax symbiote. She knew that the Symbiotes lived for a very long time but to hear that Kiax had been alive for at least 588 years was impressive and had her thinking about the Arisa symbiote and what Tela had told her. " It's likely as I believe Tela's symbiote Arisa is something like 450 years old".When he then shared with her the real reason why the Commission was displeased, again made sense with Thea as they weren't that happy about Tela's service with the Fleet either. " Now that I understand as well, they weren't to happy about Tela being in Starfleet either but naturally she doesn't care and rather do something she loves, in this case Engineering".It was nice to talk about Tela more and share what she knew about Trill, which she hoped would help Ari in the long term. Thea then put the tricorder down as Ari told her about Delirium and what he had experienced before coming here. He wasn't wrong with comparing facilities before he directed the questions back to her. Again Thea understood and thought about his question, especially given the lack of information he had. " It's not rude at all and where to begin ... I have to say that all of it has been interesting since I arrived, there's never been a dull moment" she admitted. " We have been down to the planet and its a beautiful place, but not without its dangers, the rest well we've encountered many strange things and I'm sure it'll be an interesting read for you when you access the records".

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] “Yes they’re rather paradoxical. They like their Hosts to get out and experience as many varied circumstances as possible but I guess they don’t quite like the idea of those same Hosts answering to another.” he mused with a soft chuckle. “All of Kiax’s hosts have had an interest in Engineering. I think it’s down to Loran, he was the first and was a pretty famous Engineer in his time heading up the department at the Trill Science Ministry.” he admitted. “I’m sort of hoping I can sneak peak a look at the engineering centre of the Station, I’ve never really gotten to see a Federation Space Station’s power core or main computer before.” he paused and smiled ruefully. “Although I’m much more excited by the prospect of sneaking a peek at the Mac’s Warp Core.”With a slight shrug the Trill added swiftly. “Time permitting of course.”He considered the assignment and spoke slowly, pondering aloud really, “I believe this will be the best beginning to an assignment I’ve had since teaching at the Academy. All of the time I spent on the Scott was during the war. Even after transfer to the Hecla we spent the first few months in the end stages of the war, right up to our participation of the Invasion of Cardassia. You can imagine how desperate things felt flying into battle in a Nova class vessel. I loved that little ship but it was no cruiser. The later years where better, I was able to get some wonderful Stellar data that allowed me to finish my doctorate without any real issues while aboard.”His smile widened slightly. “At least this position begins in a time of peace.” Ari paused. “Hopefully the biggest problem I face in the next few months is struggling with a calculation or datasets.” he quipped. [ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] [ " I guess not and that sounds about right from what I know about the Commission" Thea replied as Ari spoke about the Commission being paradoxical. Listening once more with genuine interest as she was given more insight and information into the Kiax symbiote. Information and gaining an understanding was something Thea enjoyed doing as it helped get to understand the other person and be able to indulge in a subject that was endearing to her. Then again Thea loved learning about all the different races and this was no exception as Ari admitted that he would like to see the inner workings of both the station and the ship. " I've been fortunate to see both, so I understand why you would be excited, there is just something about seeing the warp core and thank you for sharing more about Kiax, I always find it fascinating".As the Trill scientist then pondered out loud about how this would be the best beginning to an assignment for some time and spoke of his academy teaching as well as his experiences during the war. Thea knew that she had been fortunate in some respects as she was still on Earth for the duration of the War and hadn't served on a ship until now. " I'm glad that it will be for you, I can only imagine what it was like on a Nova Class during that time as I was on Earth when the war happened and the Mac is the first ship that I've served on".His smile was also good to see as well as the quip he made about what he hoped he would be up too. " That's true and you never know, I've learned to expect the unexpected".

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] Chuckling slightly at her agreement about the Commission he sighed softly. It seemed the disreputation of the organisation had spread a little further than just amongst those displeased Joined Trill. He wondered if he should have felt some sort of patriotic pride in the ancient group but he couldn’t even muster that small amount of indignity. The Commission had made their bed and deserved whatever tarnishing their reputation had garnered. His smile broadened a touch and he nodded. “I hope the Chief thinks so too. I haven’t met her yet but hopefully I don’t get a hyperspanner against the head for my impertinence.” he joked. The comments about the War caused his smile to fade slightly. “It wasn’t the most enjoyable year.” he admitted. “The Hecla was top of her line but only a Science vessel. We got bored during the Invasion of Cardassia and, frankly, we’re lucky that’s all we got. The Scott wasn’t so lucky.”With a rueful smile he shook his head slightly. “The unexpected will be a nice change to the mundane day to day life I was stuck with on Trill. It got to the point where I half-hoped Starfleet would have an emergency and need to recall me. Although, in retrospect, I’m not sure what sort of emergency would need a Stellar Cartographer or Mathematician.”Pausing for a moment he laughed softly. “I am quite thankful for our bosses you know. It was selfish to ask for this assignment, as far away from anyone I or D’yer ever knew, and the only person it was going to benefit was me. Yet they still approved it.”Tilting his head slightly he added. “What about you Doctor? Did you request this assignment or was it the luck of the draw?” Thea Baker

[ Thea - Primary Sickbay, Front Ear] Having shared her own opinions on the Commission, Thea hoped that it would go some way to helping Ari and as the Trill officer smiled and joked about the Chief, it was good to see him more relaxed. That was one thing Thea felt was important when treating someone or performing a physical for the first time and it also helped to have some common ground, especially if you were to serve with them for a long time. The CMO offering a grin at his comment and was quick to add a quip of her own. " If you do, you know where to come" she joked back, before the smile faded and talk turned to the War. Hearing about his experience and the lucky escape that he had, was something Thea had heard often from those who stopped at Epsilon, after the war. Making the CMO grateful for what she had and the memories she held onto when talking to those who had suffered so much. " That's why we don't forget and I may not of served on the frontline but I appreciate those who did".As the topic then shifted to the unexpected that she had warned him about, she could see why that would be a welcomed change and it also showed Ari's readiness to back out where he belonged and why he wanted to be out here. " I don't think it was selfish at all and you definitely chose the right place to be for you".When asked about how she came to be at Front Ear, Thea smiled as she answered him. " Don't get me wrong I was happy on Epsilon but when I was offered the promotion along with the uniqueness of serving on both the Station and Ship, I knew this was the place for me and I've never regretted that decision".She was being honest as Front Ear definitely felt like home and of course it had led to her relationship with Isaiah and that was something she'd never stop being thankful for, especially with a little help from Captain Ellis.

[ Ens. Ari Kiax - Sickbay, Deck 10, Front Ear Station] Chuckling softly Ari nodded at the Doctor’s good humoured reassurance. “I’ll keep that in mind, perhaps knowing I’ve medical support will give me the confidence to approach our Chief Engineer.” he noted. At the mention of having not served directly in the war the Trill shrugged slightly with a smile. “If I may be frank I find it reassuring to know not everyone was drafted into the war.” he admitted. “It felt, at times, Starfleet began to forget that it wasn’t meant to be a primarily military force. I mean I was studying for my first Doctorate while serving as a Science Officer on the Scott’s Mathematical Department while we flew into battle.” he told her with a shake of his head. “A Mathematician serving in a war. It would have almost been funny if it wasn’t so sad.”Clearing his throat he smiled again, bad memories from two different men drifted around inside Ari’s skull about the war. It wasn’t something he wanted to revisit too closely. Besides Thea had turned out to be a very pleasant woman and he wasn’t about to unload that bitterness upon her. “Perhaps.” he admitted in response to the changing topic, his requested change of assignment. “It’ll be better for my former colleagues I think. I would have been stuck feeling like I wasn’t friends with those who had been close to me and more than likely getting confused about my position on the ship. It was the same vessel D’yer had served on afterall.”At the mention of her reassignment to the outpost he could only nod. “It’s definitely odd. I’ve never heard of such a large ship being attached to an outpost before. Then again I’ve never served anywhere as far out from core Federation space before either. I guess when you’re so far from home sometimes bigger guns are required. he added the last with a smile. It made sense that a highly advanced Deep Space Vessel would be used for any surveying beyond known space. Thea Baker
