Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Born to a working class family on Trill Ari was the first of two children and the only son of Janel and Sizra Katren. Janel worked at the main planetary spaceport as a mechanic while his mother was a cook at a local restaurant. Both parents wanted more for their children and pushed hard on both of them to excel academically. Closer to his mother Ari loved both his parents but found his father incredibly overbearing and loudly opinionated which turned such characteristics into vices in his eyes from a young age.
Due to the long hours his parents spent working Ari and, later, his little sister would spend most of their time at their grandparents house while growing up. Ari was especially close to his grandfather Dorvo who was a retired Chief Petty Officer of Starfleet. The elderly Trill taught the introverted child how to fix small machines and other fun bits and pieces that Ari loved learning about. Ari was also very close to his extroverted younger sister who, more often than not, seemed to be the one looking after her older brother rather than the other way around.
In school, especially as he grew older, he found his parents expectations weighing heavily on his shoulders. A quiet boy he made few friends and rarely stood out to his teachers but excelled in most STEM subjects while barely passing the more artistic classes.
Finally graduating from school with stellar grades his parents wanted him to study Computer Science at the Chi’tar University but instead, mostly to get some freedom, he applied to Starfleet Academy on Earth. Once his acceptance letter came he wished his parents farewell, both of whom turned out to be very supportive of his decision, and after a night out drinking with his small social circle the young man headed for Earth.
Starfleet Academy:
For the first few months Ari struggled at the Academy. Prone to self-doubt and depression as well as being naturally introverted he had few friends and struggled to keep up with the workload. However an instructor at the Academy, Professor Richard Gates, took an interest in him and helped the young man get past his initial struggles. By the time Ari had finished his first year he was a star pupil focusing his studies in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science and had discovered an especially deep appreciation of Astrophysics especially Stellar Cartography.
Showing a talent for programming and data analysis he took a significant number of Computing, Engineering and Analysis classes outside his main studies. His Grandfather’s influence also showed when he took the offered optional Engineering Extension courses. By his last year Ari had focused his studies into Astrophysics, especially Stellar Cartography with a number of optional Navigation classes in the hopes that they'd serve him in the future as a Stellar Cartographer.
After four years he would graduate Valedictorian of his class of 2371 and give one of the most forgettable graduation speeches of all time, when later asked about it Ari admitted he’d been so nervous that he quite literally can not recall the event at all.
Previous Assignments:
2370-2372 - Junior Instructor in Stellar Navigation - Starfleet Academy - Earth.
Ari, being openly anxious about serving on a Vessel, actually turned down the choice picks he was offered as Valedictorian. Instead Professor Gates manged to secure him a minor instructor position seeing the young man needed a year to relax before entering active service as he hadn’t allowed himself to do so for the four years he spent at the academy. Despite being seen as problematically unambitious for a young officer he made a very positive impression on the Academy personnel.
2372-2374 - Science Officer - Data Analysis - Mathematics Department - USS Scott - Nebula Class.
As his first assignment Ari was made the assistant to the Head of Mathematics aboard the USS Scott. His duties generally lay in providing statistical Analysis of data coming in from the exploration missions. However Ari would find little time to actually enjoy this role as only a few months into 2373 the Scott was forced into combat service during the Battle of Sector 001. Badly damaged the vessel was repaired in time to then join the Dominion War. In 2374 the Scott was crippled during Operation Return and was lost with less than three dozen survivors.
Ari was quite scarred by the experiences of the war and developed a quiet, but deep, dislike towards the Dominion and Borg.
2375-2380 - Science Officer - Statistical Analysis - USS Hecla - Nova Class
The Nova Class, a small but exceptionally modern, science vessel was Ari’s second assignment after the destruction of the Scott. Considering Starfleet’s lack of vessels he considered it fortunate to end up on such a vessel at all.
After another series of costly battles the war finally ended.
Ari did his best to put the unpleasantness of the past behind him. He had hoped for nothing but peaceful exploration for at least a decade. However things took a shocking turn in 2380 when their Vessel was damaged by an unidentified stellar phenomena. The only other Trill on board, D’yer Kiax, was the Chief Tactical Officer who was severely injured during the event and it was soon realised that the man would not survive. Unfortunately he was a joined member of the species and his symbiont had to be removed to preserve it’s life. The Chief Medical Officer soon discovered that the Kiax symbiont was injured and would not survive the journey back to Trill. D’yer, on his deathbed, begged Ari to undergo the joining process in an attempt to save it’s life. Reluctant but feeling pressured and unable to sentence a symbiont to it’s death. So Ari agreed to save it’s life.
After the joining Ari felt disoriented and unsure of his own identity, people he called friends felt like strangers to him and he struggled to feel the same way towards them that he once had. Requesting a medical break from the service he returned to Trill to undergo a form of rehabilitation from the Symbiosis Commission.

Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
Sighing he Trill ran a hand across his face as he read the message in front of him. It seemed his request to rejoin active service, albeit in a limited capacity, had been approved. Truth be told Ari wasn’t sure if his sigh had been from relief or worry as his gaze floated to the window. The City was quite lovely at night, the apartment provided by the Commission had a beautiful view.
“Good news?” a familiar voice asked from the doorway.
Glancing over his shoulder Ari smiled at his sister who had decided to visit him, luckily she worked at the Trill Science Ministry not far from his current residence. She’d been on the one bright light during his visit here. The support from the Commission to help him “adjust” only made him feel more out of place as a newly joined Trill. His parents had only pushed him to accept a job at the Commission to climb their homeworld’s social ladder, gushing at how lucky he was. Out of everyone Kell tried to understand how unsure of everything Ari felt.
“That depends how you look at it.” he responded handing her the datapad.
“Oh they approved it! That’s wonderful. Is the USS Mac a good ship?” she asked with the ignorance of someone who knew nothing about space vessels.
Ari shrugged. “A fine ship.” he admitted. “Although with my luck she’ll probably crash straight into a star or something.”
With a tut of annoyance his sister put the datapad aside and stood next to him as she turned her own gaze to the cityscape beyond. She had a lot of sympathy for what her brother had gone through but she had little time for his mutterings about being some sort of bad luck magnet.
“So when do you leave?”
“Two days.”
“Well then we should go visit mother and father tomorrow.” she suggested then with a wicked grin as his horrified expression she added. “I’ll pack the Vulcan brandy I’ve been keeping for emergencies.”
A laugh escaped from Ari as he shook his head and grinned at his little sister. “You have a deal.”
Why not? For all his problems with his parents they deserved to see their son before he vanished once more. He could handle one day with them. Besides he had some Romulan whiskey hidden away which he could probably sneak along. Staying drunk for the trip seemed the easiest way to deal with it anyway.
Glancing at the datapad he just hoped he was making the right decision. If the Commission couldn’t help then maybe work was the solution he was searching for.
