Fourteen Hours Later
[ LT(JG) Joshua Niles- First Officer's Quarters, Converted Merchant Medici ]
It had been a long time since the Medici's First Officer had last been in his quarters. It had been a very, very long day indeed, and when he came in, he shrugged out of his jacket and tossed it on the back of his chair before letting himself roll into his bunk, and he sighed deeply. "Computer, begin log," he ordered.
"Ship's status: at this time we are finally underway again and heading back towards the Front Ear and we are in a formed convoy with the Mac, four merchant vessels liberated from the Scalpers, and their own ships under prize crews. If we can maintain our speed, we will be back at the station in under thirty-six hours; all of our prizes are under skeleton crews, and Mac has had to provide them. It's going to be a long day and a half to get us there, but at least it won't be too long.
Well, the mission has proven to be a success. Once Mac arrived, the Scalpers just went and... gave up. Even their leader gave up a second time when he decided to commit suicide rather than be taken into custody. As I said above, we've recovered four civilian ships that were mobile. There were the hulks of at least three more, but they'd been stripped to the bone and to be honest it would be faster, easier, and cheaper, to write them off and have them rebuilt than trying to repair them, assuming we could have the resources to do so. But, we rescued almost three hundred civilian spacers, and we're also taking with us the senior leadership of the Scalpers and some of their most... enthusiastic members back as the first draft of prisoners. I'm given to understand that Starfleet and the Cardassian Union are assembling a joint convoy to come and get the rest of them in the near future, but that's something I don't have to worry about. Our part in this mission is done.
And now it's the time to second-guess everything I've done, everything I advised, and every decision I made. I've been keeping a running report, and I expected Commander Eastman will expect it on her desk as soon as we return to the station. In fact, I expect there will be a lot of reading for her when we return. I hope I've done well; I think I've done well. But really, that's not for me to judge. So far as I'm concerned, though, from all the information available to me, I can say, without reservations, that my crew performed their duties admirably, and I hope I was equal to them."
Then, he took a deep breath, which turned into a yawn. How long had he been up? Close to a full twenty-four hours! Oh yes, it was time to let himself drift away... "Computer, end log entry... and wake me up in six hours."
He did not remember falling asleep.
