[Medici Bridge] Whilst Thea had expected a status update from Niles, she was a little surprised when he suggested that they needed to amend the plan instead. Despite there being some time before they arrived at the Scalpers Base, the Skipper wondered why her FO had chosen to say this now or why it had to be changed. Although she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and listened as he explained what he thought they should do, especially with the information that they had been able to gather since the capture of the Cutthroat. Yes she understood that it was going to be tricky but the whole mission was risky to begin with and their goal was to always call the Mac in to help them once they reached the base. So when she thought about it, they weren't really changing it to much and if they succeeded in bringing down the entire Scalpers operation, this sector would definitely be a lot safer. Thea also understood the parameters of what they could add to the existing plan and after a few moments of consideration made her decision. " Whilst it doesn't technically alter our existing plan, I have to say that it does gives us the chance to bring down the entire operation once and for all. Yes there's going to be risks but we already knew that, the moment we left the safety of the station. So let's go ahead and do it, inform both the Cutthroat and the Mac of the amendments".Decision made, Thea then turned her attention to Aravis as she informed them of their ETA and that there had been no more issues with the navigation. " Excellent and fifteen minutes should give us plenty of time to implement the new changes, once we arrive, maintain a safe distance so we can hide and be ready to move quickly. Also work with Lieutenant Th’zhaar in preparing the beacon for deployment".

The time spent familiarising herself with the systems on the Cutthroat had kept Laurel busy and gave enough of a distraction to focus on making sure that they survived rather than let fear take over. Of course she was aware of the risks and the odds against their success, but she wasn't about to let anyone down, when it came to infiltrating the Scalpers Base and do enough to occupy them until the Mac arrived. As the Lieutenant monitored Tactical, she was aware of the conversation going on around her and yet kept her silence. Whatever was going on between Kova and Harmon, didn't affect her, not unless it caused issues for the mission. However she wasn't stupid enough to understand their love/hate mostly hate relationship or perhaps there was something beneath the surface. Not that she rarely gossiped and had no intention of doing so as Harmon then asked how many torpedoes they had. Laurel was about to inform the Commander, when she paused and looked over an incoming message from the Medici and wondered how Harmon especially would react to the change of plans. " From what I can understand, the Cutthroat carries a complement of ten photon torpedoes" she began. " We've also received an update from the Medici informing us that the plan has changed slightly. I'm forwarding the details to you all as we speak".Cutthroat is to place torpedoes right up to each of the Base's beacons and set them for remote activation from the Medici. Once the Mac is here or almost within range, Cutthroat will proceed with the original plan of activating and using the Pirates incoming beacon. Once the base drops their own beacon as we surmised, Medici will detonate the torpedoes, allowing the Mac to enter and for the Cutthroat to escape.Message passed on to all of those present from the Medici, Laurel stood by to receive further orders and help initiate the plan.

[Bridge, Cutthroat] Ma and T'Karra had spent the better part of the last five hours conducting a thorough secondary sweep. While the sweep revealed no additional personnel or useful intelligence onboard, it did call into question the hygiene routines (or lack thereof) of the Cutthroat's crew. As the duo worked, the Klingon proclaimed enthusiastically and often that he was looking forward to another engagement with their pirate adversaries. T'Karra was somewhat familiar with the customs of Ma's people, but to see such genuine zeal for combat was intriguing to witness first hand. It did not appear that living long was a key component to a prosperous, meaningful life for him. With their objective complete, they returned to the bridge with phaser rifles slung and reported to the acting tactical officer. "The Cutthroat has been searched with negative findings, Lieutenant," she said, snapping to attention. Thea Baker Matthew Harmon Kova Sh'qaleq Judith Eastman

[ LT(JG) Joshua Niles- Bridge, Converted Merchant Medici ]"Aye Ma'am," Niles replied, and not without a sigh of relief. It had taken him some time to go through all the data that had been made available to the crew detached to hunt the Scalpers since Cutthroat had been taken, and he had needed to crunch some numbers, go through equipment lists and crew capabilities, as well as astrographical data to see if all could work together. And, frankly, though Medici carried a fairly powerful offensive armament and far better shields than any freighter had any business carrying, the idea of heading right the beasts' lair in a ship not designed for action didn't appeal to him at all... and about on par with the notion of going into action with a ship no one had been trained on, with an unknown level of maintenance or capabilities. And neither ship, or even both together, would have the offensive punch to deal with even a fraction of what would be waiting for them in the middle of the Tarkin Mire. So limiting exposure to Commander Harmon and his people, while still a less than comfortable idea, was better than putting everyone in that same basket... though part of him wished he'd be the one out there while being quite glad that he was not. Another set of interesting feelings to be dealing with at a later time. However, he did start composing a message for the Mac. They had already been apprised of the sort of information they had gotten from Cutthroat and of their initial plan of action, but now that it had changed, some things needed to be put in motion in order to minimize the risk to Cutthroat and her prize crew, and to maximize their odds of success. Punching out the message to Cutthroat had been easy: quick, to the point, clearly voiced as orders given they fell under Mac's command. However, what went out to Mac was a bit more of a challenge to write up, given that it would indeed be more of a request, for the mission commander remained there, and in the end Commander Eastman could invalidate everything that had been planned and assume direct control herself just as easily as she could agree with the plan that had been forward and follow it. With the message sent, he found himself taking deep breaths. This was going to be it, the do-or-die part of their mission. If they had fallen for deception planted in Cutthroat's computers, they would look like idiots at best. If the math was the slightest bit wrong with regards to the beacons' signals, Cutthroat could be trapped in the Mire all alone with no hope of support, and no escape once the Scalpers' outgoing buoys would be blown. Or there could be raiders coming in late, leaving Medici at their mercy while Cutthroat and Mac would both be within the Mire. Many things that could go wrong, and over which he had no control whatsoever... "Skipper, all messages are away, waiting for confirmations from Mac and Cutthroat. In the meantime, I think we should double-check the beacon at our end and verify that Cutthroat can lock on to it. If anything goes wrong, at best it's 24 hours at full impulse to get out of the Mire for Cutthroat and Mac."However, he did not say the worst that could happen: Cutthroat being stranded against overwhelming force if Mac was delayed...

[Matthew Harmon - Bridge, Cutthroat][...] "Yep, and it terrified him. As soon as he thought I was ready to discard him he couldn't wait to give me everything he knew, anything to get a lighter sentence since he thought he'd lost all leverage," he tone was monotone and matter-of-fact. He wasn't gloating, he felt that there was no harm in being honest with Kova, especially since he'd rather not antagonise her going into this situation. The pilot had correctly estimated the situation, eventually and given up everything, even his codes as pilot. Hopefully they didn't need other codes, but at the very least they had the pilot's real codes. He had figured that if he gave the fake durress codes to Harmon, Kosester had a good chance of firing on the Cutthroat and killing him anyway. No, the pilot, Behel, figured his best chance of surviving was to cooperate with Harmon. And he was right. Probably. Time would tell.
"How many torpedoes do we have, Tactical?" he asked.
[Ens. Mabel Henriksen - Bridge, Cutthroat][...] "We need to keep in mind that their torpedoes were modified, and the targeting system is customized too. If we fire them, we won't be as accurate as the Scalpers are," she noted. She did not recall immediately how many they had, but she did recall that Form Q-1139-T-2M[fn]Processing and cataloguing of munitions on captured vessels[/fn] was a pain to fill out. [...] " From what I can understand, the Cutthroat carries a complement of ten photon torpedoes" she began. " We've also received an update from the Medici informing us that the plan has changed slightly. I'm forwarding the details to you all as we speak".[Bridge, Cutthroat] [...] With their objective complete, they returned to the bridge with phaser rifles slung and reported to the acting tactical officer. "The Cutthroat has been searched with negative findings, Lieutenant," she said, snapping to attention. [ LT(JG) Joshua Niles- Bridge, Converted Merchant Medici ] [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Bridge, Cutthroat ] Kova simply sighed as Harmon seemed to take pride in his little tactic. He hadn't gone as far as to admit that it was his own way to flex his muscles and show his importance. Suffice it to say, he had managed to stroke his own ego rather sufficiently. It'd probably keep him purring for the next few hours. As Kova moved to return to her own station, Eastman's little pet spoke about the ship's armaments and how the customizations would likely make it a bit more difficult for them should they land in the middle of a firefight. "I'll look into it," she stated simply. Besides, if anyone stood a shot at making heads or tails of it all, it was likely her. No sooner had she sat in her seat at her console did the tactical officer, Lt. Adams, speak up, stating that the Medici had altered the plan. It only took Kova a few strokes of her fingers to read over the communique. Her eyes rolled as her suspicions seemed to be confirmed. "It seems we are the most expendable after all," Kova stated aloud. And what would really be lost if those aboard the Cutthroat were listed as casualties? An ex-con and potential security threat. An annoying intelligence officer who had been shipped to the far reaches of the Beta Quadrant. Eastman's little spy, whom was likely easily replaced with someone else just as willing to serve. A few extra security officers, including a Vulcan, whom would readily sign up to be cannon fodder. The Andorian wondered if this was actually Niles' suggestion, and a way for him to stab Harmon in the back from afar. It's not like there wouldn't be an opening in Intelligence if Harmon bit it. If they were going to be in the heart of the Tarkin Mire when the roozh[fn]excrement[/fn] hit the fan, then they'd at least be better to shoot straight. "Looking at those weapon systems now," Kova remarked... already wondering if she had enough time to attempt to reprogram the targeting systems from scratch before they arrived.

The initial plan has changed based on more information sourced from the Scalpers' databases. In order to maximize the odds of mission success and reduce the risks posed to our prize crew on Cutthroat, we would request that Mac join us at the Tarkin Mire's northern polar region at your best speed and be ready to head in. Attached are expected levels of force at the pirate base, navigation beacon information, and the updated plan. Please acknowledge the receipt and confirm your course of action. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Ready Room -> Bridge, USS Mac]After the game concluded (with a score of 10-6 for the Yankees), Judy had returned to work. There was, as always, much paperwork to get through, including the usual load of the station and ship, and she had to get through it all without Mabel. She was disrupted by a ping on her PADD, a message from the Medici. She read over it, gently shaking her head at the militarized mannerisms dripping from it. A question mark would've been a nice, courteous gesture. "Let's go," the First Officer said to herself. She straightened out her uniform, put away the large reading glasses she'd been using, and grabbed her handbag before heading off. With a swift gait, Judy entered the Bridge, quick but not rushed. "Good afternoon," she greeted the crew, with a few (those who had spent enough shifts under her to know her style) responding. "We're going to go lend a hand to the Medici team. I'm going to send coordinates over right now, to head for at maximum warp, and I'll explain the plan on the way," she explained, sitting down in the center chair. She took a different, smaller pair of readers out of the handbag, placed these low on her nose, then accessed the transmission from the Medici, and dispatched the coordinates to the helm. "We'll get there in 16 minutes," the Helmsman, a youngish Bolian man by the name of Garr Zaha. "Excellent, Mr. Zaha. Engage. Let's record a quick message for the Medici," Judy said. She pushed the readers up, into her hair, and looked towards the 2D video recorder. =A= "Hey there! We're heading to the polar region right now at maximum warp. We'll be there in about 15 minutes, and we should be completely ready for action. We'll advise you if we pick up any unusual activity. I can't wait to see you all face-to-face again when this is finished. Buh-bye." =A= This profoundly non-Starfleet message was recorded and transmitted to the Medici and Cutthroat, and then Judy stood up and began to explain the battle plan to her bridge crew.

[Matthew Harmon - Bridge, Cutthroat]
It was lucky Mabel was there to take care of all the paperwork. Harmon's usual duties required enough of that as is, he had no intention of filling out any more than he could get away with. Before he could respond to her, Kova stated she'd look into it. "Alright," he acknowledged, using a more informal manner given he knew Kova was none to fond of orders and tended to do as she pleased. So far that usually yielded decent results.
"Very good," he nodded curtly to Lieutenant Andrews. He wasn't particularly pleased at the fact Niles' didn't bother consulting him on the new proposed course of actions, at least he assumes it was Niles' idea. Though he did expect that from the young officer, so he was more disappointed in the good Doctor's call not to involve him. The plan made things much more risky, it would be quite suspicious for them to hang around all the beacons. "If that is the case, I have no intention of giving them the satisfaction of our demise," he replied to Kova's conspiratorial musings.
He soon got another message, this time from Commander Eastman. It was exceedingly informal and for a moment he wondered if it was some mistake that it had been sent to him, until he read it again and put things together. "The Mac's on its way...hopefully they get here before we're subject to too much...misadventure."

[ Lt Laurel Andrews - Cutthroat Bridge] After delivering the news of the last minute change to the plan, Laurel responded with the standard and encrypted acknowledgement, before the doors to the small bridge opened to reveal T'Karra and PO3 Mat'lekh who affectionately was known as Ma. Acknowledging both officers as T'Karra reported that their search had yielded negative findings which was definitely a bonus considering this wasn't normal circumstances. The lack of booby traps or other potential issues made their takeover much easier and made a mental note of both T'Karra and Ma's efficiency in dealing with their assigned task. However before she could respond, Harmon acknowledged the change of plan, which led Laurel to wonder if is curt tone was directed more at the Medici rather than herself. Although she quickly dismissed it as Kova responded to the change before getting down to business with looking into the weapons systems. That gave Laurel an idea as Harmon replied before receiving a message from Commander Eastman about the Mac's impending arrival. That was also encouraging in regards to executing the last part of the mission. " Crewman, Petty Officer, see what you can do to assist Kova with the weapons systems, we haven't got long to modify the torpedoes if the Mac is on it's way and I have no intention of letting the Scalpers kill us without taking them down first".Order given, Laurel then prepared the Cutthroat for battle or as much as she could do, until it was time to place the torpedoes.

|Ready Room, USS Mac || lt. cmdr. Sven Aune|Sven was taken back by the poignant response. It must have been hard for Judy to relay those past traumas. At least she had Max, a person to whom she could lean up. Sven wished for the same thing. But romance, or even love wasn't in the cards for him. Xander was still on hiatus, and he had no idea if he was going to return. "I feel like it's a gut punch just thinking about it and I haven't lost anyone yet." he looked at his fingers. But Judy had announced that the Medici had reported back a successful operation. He assumed that everyone was safe and sound and he felt tension in his back suddenly release. His whole composure began to loosen up. "Oh, that's good news. I was really worried. I mean, you already knew that." the large man blushed behind his beard. He really was a sensitive man. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - Captain's Ready Room, USS Mac]Buoyed by the good news from the Medici, and the comfort of her husband's presence, Judy regained some of her composure. She was still emotionally raw, but she was steady. "It's healthy to worry. It's natural," she reassured Sven, as she took off her readers and neatly put them away. "If you weren't worried, that would've been a bad sign. If we're not worried, we don't care, and that makes us unfit to do our jobs. We just have to learn to live with our worry and fear, like we do with grief and loss. The same goes for leading any group, or being a parent, except that in Starfleet we deal with these grim stakes.""And you don't get to nag people in Starfleet like you nag us," Anna sassed, and Judy shook her head. Feeling rather warm, Judy began to unzip her jacket, a cue for Max to release his tight hold on her - which he did. She stood up, took off the jacket, then motioned at her desk chair, inviting her husband to move over. Promptly, he did just that, and she joined him there, without needing a single word.
Tag Sven Aune |Ready Room || lt cmdr Sven Aune| Sven chuckled at Anna's little jibe. Judy was a very motherly type. But something Anna didn't understand, possibly due to age and lack of life experience is the chain of command. Judy doesn't nag because if her orders are not followed, there are very real consequences. And Sven and his department would be called in to enforce it. He didn't seek to add this though. He wished he had this kind of relationship with his parents growing up. But he didn't and he briefly reflected upon his father. His mind wandered back to the Medici. He was glad that things were going well and felt more at ease. He didn't know what else to say. It brought up emotions he wasn't fully aware of and so he sat quietly in a pensive nature as the game played on in the background. It had finished and he filed out of her readyroom. He decided to take up space on the bridge, at one of the lesser used stations to work on his in box. No matter how much time he put into it, it never seemed to deplete. He really needed to get an assistant. Busy he saw Judy emerage and started issuing orders. There was an urgency in her voice. Something was wrong. "Should I man tactical?" he asked. He felt really stupid. Because he was station security and not really tactical. He knew the operation of phasers and torpedos on paper.... but in practice..... Tag Judith Eastman

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Bridge, Medici] As they approached the Tarkin Mire, Shavan was able to scan and lock on to all the Scalpers’ navigation beacons, which were exactly where the Cutthroat’s charts indicated they would be. “Sensors are locked on to all their beacons.” he reported to Thea, before double-checking the schematics of their own beacon and the necessary coordinates to place it. “Our beacon is ready to be deployed as soon as we're in position.” He looked to Aravis to confirm when that would be. Shavan hoped that this change of plan would be worthwhile. He knew the Scalpers needed to be taken down by whatever means necessary, and what he had seen in Engineering only confirmed that. Although for the moment he was just as focused on the scientific curiosity of the Mire itself as what was waiting inside. Tag Thea Baker , Joshua Niles , Ozu Saya (Aravis)

He soon got another message, this time from Commander Eastman. It was exceedingly informal and for a moment he wondered if it was some mistake that it had been sent to him, until he read it again and put things together. "The Mac's on its way...hopefully they get here before we're subject to too much...misadventure." [Bridge, Cutthroat] "Aye, Lieutenant," the pair answered almost in unison before turning away from the tactical officer. Ma strode a short distance to the Andorian's console, working the sling on his weapon until it came to rest along side his hip. T'Karra did the same as she gave Lieutenant Commander Harmon a side long glance. There was still a matter of how she would have to handle that situation... but she brushed the issue aside for the time being and turned to face Kova. T'Karra was by no means an expert at reading the expressions and body language of her more expressive counterparts, but even she could surmise that the contractor was at irritated with their current predicament. A Vulcan was the last species suited to solve that particular problem, so she did what most reasonable Vulcans would do an ignored the display of emotion. "How can we be of assistance?" she asked. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Bridge, Cutthroat ] Maybe... just maybe command suited Harmon. Not that he came off as magnanimous or had the appeal of a proper leader. It seemed the chair voided him the opportunity to take potshots and strut his arrogance. He was almost tolerable. He certainly didn't take this opportunity to pick a fight with Kova, although it was likely because he saw things in a similar light as she. Kova certainly wasn't going to hold her breath until he admitted as much. Though, his declaration that he wasn't going to voluntarily impale himself for the sake of the mission's success was almost inspiring. Lt. Andrews seemed to fall in line, instructing a pair of her officers to actually assist Kova. The Andorian's brow rose slightly as she overheard the woman's words. It was typical at this point. When on the brink of death, turn to the Andorian to save our pink little asses. Kova transferred a few instructions to a PADD, and was prepared by the time Crewman T'Karra and PO3 Mat'lekh approached. The pair of them sounded like the beginning of a joke: A Klingon and a Vulcan walk into a bar...."We clearly don't have enough time for a full recalibration of the weapons systems, so you're about to get a crash course in Maquis Finesse 101," Kova remarked as she extended her hand offering them the PADD. "Disengage the remote trigger on all of the torpedos to be deployed. Instead, make certain their chronometers are synchronized. We can set a time for simultaneous detonation as we approach the first beacon. That should shed some of the initial suspicion that we're responsible and maybe buy us a little time." Naturally, it was up to Harmon to sign off on that, but hopefully he could see things from Kova's point of view. Tactically, it provided them with the opportunity to focus solely on their defenses, but if the timing were off even slightly.... Still, sometimes the best you could hope for was to not smear the roozh[fn]excrement[/fn] while wiping your phuuzh[fn]anus[/fn]. Kova then looked towards Lieutenant Andrews. "I think I can help with the target differentials with the phaser banks, but I need for you to be actively firing for me to patch those sub-routines," Kova stated. Her eyes casually glanced in Harmon's direction, almost silently suggesting that he not get used to her currently compliant nature.

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Bridge, Cutthroat ] Kova transferred a few instructions to a PADD, and was prepared by the time Crewman T'Karra and PO3 Mat'lekh approached. We can set a time for simultaneous detonation as we approach the first beacon. That should shed some of the initial suspicion that we're responsible and maybe buy us a little time." [Bridge, Cutthroat] "Very well..." T'Karra paused briefly as Mat'lekh took the offered PADD, searching her memory for a rank to match with the woman's face. "...ma'am," she finished, having found none, and simply canted her head respectfully. The briefing her security team had received made no mention of any civilian contractors. Her superiors might have considered it "above her pay grade." What a strange euphemism for keeping the junior enlisted men uninformed. Though it also was quite possible that she had yet to meet this particular woman, being newly assigned, it was unlikely. She had combed through the duty rosters prior to their deployment; such a task was worth the effort to learn the capabilities of her associates on such a mission. The pair retreated to a nearby unoccupied console and began their work. Mat'lekh, preferring combat to computers, read the instructions in rapid-fire cadence to T'Karra while her diligent fingers rushed to input the needed changes. Perhaps together they could meet their limited timeline. Kova Sh'qaleq , Thea Baker and any other relevant bridge crew.

[Matthew Harmon - Bridge, Cutthroat]Harmon nodded in agreement as Kova presented her plan for the torpedoes. It was sound, so he signed off on it. "Do it." Kova's glances seemed to imply that she was still at least sceptical of him. The feeling was mutual, but for now things were going fine. They were about to march into battle after all, not much time for petty jabs. He almost chuckled as T'Karra called Kova 'ma'am', wondering if the Andorian would take offence or if it would serve to inflate her ego. "Helm, make for the beacons, full impulse," he ordered. It didn't take too long for them to make the rounds on the beacons and drop off the torpedoes with Kova's modifications. Once that was done he took a deep breath. "Bring us into the Mire...hopefully we come back out."

[ Lt Laurel Andrews - Cutthroat Bridge] Once T'Karra and Ma had acknowledged her order, Laurel continued to monitor her station, as the officers assigned under her watch, approached Kova and asked how they could help. Given the nature of the Bridge layout, it wasn't difficult to overhear and understood the time constraints that they had to get the changes made, but at least they had an option thanks to the Maquis. Considering the circumstances now wasn't the time to question the source and besides if it worked then that's all they needed. When the Andorian consultant then looked to Laurel and mentioned that she could help with the target differentials, but would need her to be actively firing, in order to patch the subroutines. Laurel understood what was required of her as she answered the other woman. " Understood, I can definitely do that".Then the Bridge became more active as T'Karra and Ma moved off to assist Kova, before Harmon gave his consent for the plan then ordered the helm to head for the Beacons. Placing the torpedoes needed a lot of concentration, teamwork and silent prayer, given how precise they needed to be with their targets. With that done and sending confirmation back to the Medici, Laurel then prepared herself when the order came to take them into the Mire. ************** [ Thea - Medici Bridge] With the final report from Shavan, regarding the status of their beacon and how it was ready to be deployed, along with confirmation from the Cutthroat and Mac. Thea looked around at those present and gave the order to proceed. " Helm take us into position, Mr Th’zhaar deploy the beacon the moment we reach the edge of the Mire. Then I'd like you to monitor the Cutthroat and the base, whilst Mr Niles prepares to detonate the torpedoes that the Cutthroat have placed".Then the Skipper paused for a moment, then added. " Let's do this so we can go home".
