[Park - Deck 6, Front Ear] " Yes really, it was Leanna's idea which I fully supported, in fact I got to witness it" Thea replied, knowing that her boyfriend would be very curious as to what it would be. Therefore dropping further hints would either lead to her bringing him into the secret or keep him guessing. Although when he made the comment about Judy getting more than she bargained for with Thea as her XO. Thea simply grinned as he was probably right. " Maybe but its nothing bad and we may need to leave food until after the promotions".As much as she was loving their playful banter, she didn't want to be trying to wolf down some of the buffet before she got called up the podium. [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Park, Deck 6, Front Ear Station ] "I see," was the science officer's only reply to Thea's additional hint about the surprise. He was certainly curious now, though he tried to weigh whether it was worth it to continue guessing. "And this was all Leanna's idea?" What was more that Thea had actually witnessed it... her words. "Well, I would have thought it was something to eat coming from Leanna, but now I'm not so sure."Whatever it was, it sounded as if it was going to occur after the promotions. He sipped from his glass of water once more. "I wouldn't imagine that it'd be anything bad," he said with a smile. "I'd simply wager that... clever is a likely description."

[Park - Front Ear] Leanna smiled as Judy thanked them for coming before Max shook Riyo's hand and Michael spoke up. The six year old and his siblings were friends of Ari and Lea knew how close he was to his Grandma. So for him to be involved was very endearing and smiled again as Riyo knelt down to speak to him. She loved his demeanour around children and so far was already proving to be a great influence on her own. " That's wonderful Michael, you'll have to tell Ari all about it" Lea added as Riyo gave her a playful accusatory look in regards to the dancing. " Maybe, you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?" she teased not wanting to reveal the surprise just yet and knew exactly what he was referring too. Perhaps he could be persuaded to dance once he had seen her in action, but for now it was fun to tease him about it. As Judy then explained that they might dance and how she didn't want to start a new job with a sprained ankle. Lea understood as Riyo reassured her that if it did happen, that she was in a good place with him and Thea being here. " Riyo's right and tonight is definitely all about having fun" she began then paused as Saya joined them. " Hey Saya".
Tag Jovireh Velal Judith Eastman Ozu Saya [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) et al - Park]"Thank you," Michael accepted the praise politely. He had learned to mind his manners, especially as he wanted to follow in his grandmother's footsteps and captain a starship (or station) someday. As for the grandmother in question, Judy was less concerned with the ramifications of the injury, than she was with a big, public fiasco. She didn't mind showing the crew her more human side, but seeking out a demonstration of her feebleness wasn't a good way to inspire confidence. "The fact that you and Thea are both here makes it worse. I'd have to play favorites," she quipped, evading the topic. Then along came Saya, looking just a little worried; worried enough, in fact, that Judy didn't give voice to her pithy thoughts about everyone, from her daughter to the JCC[fn]Jewish Community Center[/fn] at Utopia Planitia, addressing her by the new rank (though how the latter had heard of the promotion, she did not know). "Thank you for coming, kiddo," she said instead. "Aunt Saya is half-Bajoran. That's how I know about your people," Michael then pointed out to Riyo. He was, understandably, proud of the multicultural environment in which he'd grown up. "Let's sit down," Max suggested, not too keen on continuing the awkward dance of holding his plate in one hand and picking quiches off it with the other.

Tag Jovireh Velal , Ozu Saya , and Leanna Mazal [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Park]He decided not to respond to Lea's devilish expression, knowing her well enough by now that she had something up her sleeve. It would be interesting to see when she chose to reveal it. Riyo laughed when Judy commented on having to play favorites between doctors if she were injured. "Nonsense. We make it easy. Whoever is closest tends the patient." It didn't work quite the same way in emergency triage, when patients are assigned to those with the experience necessary for treating their level of injury. But away from the infirmary, regardless of the severity of the injury, the patient was treated by whoever could reach them first. They were joined then by whom he recognized as the station's Chief Engineer, and returned her smile and nod of greeting. As Michael informed him of the obvious heritage of the woman, he gave the child another grin before speaking to Saya. "Dr. Paawin Riyo. It's a pleasure to officially meet you." He hadn't heard much about the engineer, mainly only recognized the name and face, but he'd likely seen her around the station at some point.

Her forehead relaxed slightly, but Evekh's health was still foremost on her mind.[fn]Feel free to have Lea read this[/fn] She raised an eyebrow at Michael as he spoke about her to the man who seemed to be with Lea. Looking up, she realized that he was Bajoran and that she must have come in on the middle of a conversation. Dr. Paawin, the chief acknowledged with a nod. At Max's suggestion, Saya gratefully followed, staying close to Judy to murmur, I may not be able to stay long. Kyo and Evekh were supposed to come with me, but right as we were leaving, Evekh became ill. Kyo took him to sickbay, and I'm waiting to hear from him. I felt I should come, but I knew you would understand if I had to leave precipitously.

[PO3 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Park]While she wasn't sure it had been Earth that forged her destiny, or the event that landed her there, Jovireh didn't feel the need to debate that particular statement as she took a drink of brandy. It wasn't as flavorful as she nomally liked her alcohol, nor as strong, but it was perfect to drink throughout the event to ease her nerves without risking inebriation. That would come later when she opened the case that finally arrived, that she had asked her mother for months ago. She grinned as the Andorian reluctantly admitted that not all humans were so terrible. "That's true. I've met a few over the years that don't have quite the amount of arrogance as the rest of them." Though in her experience, it was as much a part of human nature as red blood. Some were just had more respect for others than the race was known for. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Park, Deck 6, Front Ear Station ] Kova was willing to concede that some humans were redeemable. She wasn't entirely certain the same could be said for Vulcans, especially when there were a few, such as Sorren, who were consistently proving Kova right. She lifted her glass to propose a toast. "To the not so arrogant," Kova said, "... for daring to be different." She tilted her glass to drink and then lowered it. Kova's eye glanced briefly in the direction of the captain and her husband, and then back towards Jovireh. "You seem... friendly with our new captain," Kova remarked. "Do you consider her to be among those few?" One could argue that such a question was loaded and put the security officer on the spot. Yet, Kova had never been known to tread lightly.
Tag: Jovireh Velal [PO3 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Park]Jovireh raised her own glass with a grin at the toast, taking a deep drink before lowering it once more. The familiar burn down her throat and chest was refreshing, and made her even more look forward to the afterparty of one she had planned for herself later. Kova's next question brought her out of her thoughts, and slightly startled her. She glanced over at the Eastman-Williams family, wondering what part of the brief, silent exchange had given the impression they were on 'friendly' terms. Although... she wasn't exactly wrong... So there was no point in arguing with that part. "I'm still trying to figure her out," she answered thoughtfully. "She's definitely better than my previous commanding officer... But I haven't been around her much when she hasn't been trying to make a certain impression." Jov was still relatively new to the station and crew, and while she'd had more interactions with the Captain during the last couple months than most of her rank - former or new - probably ever had, she was never one to immediately accept the image presented, especially from authority, and even moreso from humans.

[Park - Front Ear] When Riyo didn't respond to her teasing and mysterious comment, Leanna grinned as Michael thanked them and further greetings were exchanged with Saya. Although as Judy and Riyo spoke more about him and Thea in regards to hypothetical treatment and favourites, as well as Michael showing more of his cultural knowledge. Leanna couldn't help but pick up on Saya's concern about Evekh . Not that it was to pry but simply due to being in such close proximity and the friendship that they shared. So she offered her friend a look of understanding and reassurance as Max then suggested that they sit down. With one more glance towards the band and the excitement at what was to come later. Leanna took hold of Riyo's hand so they could follow the others. " Good idea, should we grab a drink on the way?" she said with the latter part of her comment aimed at Riyo.

Judith Eastman(-Williams) et al - Park]Judy leaned down to respond to what Saya had said. There was, to her, only one appropriate way to react to an ill child. "You go and be with Evekh if you're needed. Starfleet personnel are a dime a dozen, but moms aren't."Max led them to a picnic table, where the younger Eastman-Williams family members were seated. Anna, it seemed, was just in the middle of regaling her three-year-old niece, Helen, and two-year-old nephew, Benny, with some story. Clearly, the toddlers' parents had left them in the hands of their more than capable aunt, seeking some peace and quiet. "...so then I asked your Grandpa, why even have a trail map?" she could be heard recounting, until recognizing the subject of the story coming her way. "Hi."Anna wasn't necessarily embarrassed - the family were more than used to making fun of each other - but it was awkward to be interrupted mid-story about her dad getting them lost in the woods. Judy glanced down at her watch. It was just about time to get through the ceremonial stuff. "Michael and I will have to get going. There are pips to distribute," she said politely, as she took the six-year-old's hand and led him to the stage. Judy had hoped to find someone who'd be willing to preside over the ceremony for them, but under the circumstances - namely the relative hurry with which they pulled together this impressive ceremony - she'd had to settle for a more complicated system. "Ladies and gentlebeings, thank you all for coming," Judy began her quick, prepared remarks. "As you know, this year hasn't been the smoothest year that any crew has ever had, but you have all handled it excellently, and I've always been very proud to be your First Officer. Today is about all of you, because the very fact that this station is intact, and that we haven't gone to war with anyone, is a big deal, and you all made it happen."Judy had deliberately refrained from a long speech, both because no one wanted to hear her go on and on, and so she could commit her words to memory. "But it's the nature of command that sometimes, we do feel the need to toot our own horns."Judy gently patted Michael's back, and he stepped up, on a little block, so he was at a suitable height to use the lectern. "My Grandma, Commander Eastman, joined Starfleet a long time ago to make the galaxy a safer place for everyone. My Dad says she's a lot tougher than she looks, but I don't know what he's talking about," Michael read, slowly, from his notes. He was still new to reading, and newer still to public speaking, but he made a valiant effort. "Grandma, you are here... now promoted to the rank of captain. Congratulations."With that, the 6-year-old mimed the act of pinning a pip on his grandma's uniform. Judy kissed the boy on the forehead, and then took her turn at the lectern again. "Thank you, Michael," she said to him quietly, and then returned to addressing the crew. Michael headed back to his grandfather. "Grandchildren, they're incredible. I recommend you all get some," she quipped to her young audience. "The first choice I had to make as a Captain was choosing a First Officer, and I have to say, it was also the easiest choice I had to make so far. [Hot Candy - Park, Front Ear Station]{Click for Candy} Candy Barr had done some serious maneuvering in order to ensure she was rostered for this particular shift. Promotion ceremonies didn't just attract high-ranking officers, but also those held in high esteem. And for Candy, the highest esteem one could possibly achieve was a healthy bank balance. Bonus if said account holder had an eye for young blondes. Tray in hand, she stood by one of the makeshift bars, her pose practiced and polished. She was poised to take flight as soon as her sharp eyes zeroed in on a likely target. The area was getting busier, and hopefully, she thought, thirstier. Candy was quite good at quenching thirsts. She spied the grey-haired cook; the one married to the Captain. It might provide a little entertainment to rattle that cage a little, but Candy liked a long game, and Max had neither long, nor much by way of game. She could do a little better, she decided. Her dear Mama always said that the first step to getting what you want is to have the courage to get rid of what you don't - and she didn't want to work as a waitress anymore. As such, she required someone who could help her with those ambitions. Next her eyes fell upon the scientist in the dress uniform - the one with the seemingly meteoric rise up the ranks. Most any time she'd seen him he'd been tagging along after the ginger, but there were no rings on no fingers. But even if either of them were fixing to put some there, that still wouldn't stop her. With a bright smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes, she began to approach. She was about half-way across the floor when the pair were called up to the podium. Together. A bare hint of irritation flickered across her face, but Candy recovered quickly. She'd been raised that way. And when a door closed, did a window not sometimes open? What fortune that her engaging gaze should fall upon the Bajoran doctor. Handsome, smart, going places. Not to mention that adorable nose of his; they always appeared to Candy as though their snoots were shrugging. She took her window and sidled up to him, completely ignoring the rest of his company for the moment. "Well, hi there!" She greeted brightly, her Southern drawl in full play. "I'm Candy, and I'd just love to look after you this evening. Can I start you out with a drink?"

"That is definitely something to look forward to."He didn't have the opportunity to elaborate as the ceremony portion of the evening began to get underway. He gave his full attention to the lectern as Captain Eastman began to speak. It wasn't long before her own grandson spoke on her behalf prior to placing her 4th pip onto her collar. He joined the applause to celebrate the moment, which then led to the newly minted Captain Eastman moving on to choice for first officer. That then led to him setting his water aside before offering his hand to Thea to lead her to the lectern. As Isaiah stepped towards the lectern, following young Michael's example. "Talk about a tough act to follow," Isaiah said with a smile as he winked in Michael's direction. "Dr. Thea Baker is easily the most selfless woman I've ever met. There are times I wonder if she even knows the meaning of the words 'no,' 'quit,' and 'limitations.' Because no matter the how dire the circumstances... she's not going to stop. No matter the odds... she's going to try. Where there is no hope, she fines a way to inspire it. That is all we could ever need, or hope for in friendship... in love... in our new first officer... He then took a few steps towards his ginger-haired lover and whispered his congratulations as he placed the pip on her collar and gave her a gentle kiss, before stepping aside so that she could have her moment.

[PO3 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Park]Jovireh raised her own glass with a grin at the toast, taking a deep drink before lowering it once more. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Park, Deck 6, Front Ear Station ] Kova casually glanced in the direction of the Eastman-Williams family as Jovireh spoke. The security officer seemed to be on the fence where the station's new captain was concerned. Though, the way she spoke of her did match Kova's own experiences. Her own encounters with Eastman did at times feel... staged to an extent. It wasn't that it was an act, but was it supposed to paint the woman in some sort of favorable light? And there were always her larger supporters whom were always closest to her: Ozu... Aune... and the woman she had just dubbed as her new XO, Baker. Speaking of which, the woman and her science-beau were summoned up to the lectern shortly after her own coronation. One thing was obvious, Eastman wasn't one to be underestimated. Even the little ceremony of her grandson bestowing her rank was a symbol of sorts. If anyone was a threat, it was her... having outlasted all the other station commanders. "She is... a force," Kova simply remarked, sipping from her glass. Then came her right hand, the doctor. She had seen the woman in action, and for someone that liked to poke and prod people all day, she was a leader in her own rights. Her interactions with Baker had been limited primarily to that one mission, but Kova wasn't inclined to be anyone's medical pincushion if she had a say in the matter. Her little boy-toy sang her a few praises and Kova watched silently, not looking to interrupt. Though, when the opportunity presented itself she briefly spoke once again. "I suppose it's almost your turn. Are there plans for anyone special to present you?"

[Hot Candy - Park, Front Ear Station][...]
Tag: Jovireh Velal [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Park]The group dispersed as everyone went to find seating, and Lea asked him if they wanted to grab a drink before finding their own place to sit. "Of course. Isn't that the point of celebrations?" He replied with amusement. During his time with Starfleet, he had quickly discovered that humans loved looking for every excuse to celebrate. Of course, the promotion of several officers was definitely worthy, but as it was only one of many such events he was beginning to think of it as a quirk of the species. Given that more often than not alcohol was provided at the celebrations, he was also beginning to suspect that celebrations were an excuse to drink in a socially acceptable manner. It was a quirk he could get used to. They were on their way to the tables when the ceremony started, and Riyo paused to watch the brief speech, followed by little Michael "promoting his grandma". It really was quite adorable... Thea and Isaiah were called up next, but suddenly a voice spoke from his other side. Startled, he glanced over to see a server standing a bit closer to him than usual. He blinked in surprise, taking a moment to process what she had said. "Uh, sure. A glass of springwine please." Riyo glanced back over at Lea, resting a hand on the small of her back. "And for you?"

[PO3 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Park]Jovireh raised her own glass with a grin at the toast, taking a deep drink before lowering it once more.
Tag Jovireh Velal [PO3 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Park]A force... Yes, that was one way to describe the new Captain. As friendly as she was to the crew, Jovireh had watched her as closely as she had Colonel Vasser during the last mission, and had been impressed by the firm way she'd handled the conversation. The older woman definitely kept a cool head and confident air, and effortlessly maintained control over any outward expression of emotions. It wasn't a combination she was used to seeing in humans. She watched as the ceremony began, her nerves increasing steadily as the moments ticked on. Then Kova was speaking to her again, and the lump in her throat returned. While her mother would have been thrilled - and likely rambled on in a speech that lasted an eternity - it had happened too quickly for her to arrange transport to the station. Her father was gone, and she wasn't closer to any particular one of her new friends, so deciding between them didn't particularly feel right. "I don't have anyone special." She replied, her words heavier with meaning than she had intended, and she swiftly downed the rest of her drink before setting the glass aside to prepare herself to make her way forward. In front of everyone.

Kaya's complexion was flattered by the gold of her dress uniform. She pulled her thick dark hair back in a pair of close plaits in a rare, more formal style. This was a big moment. She didn't want to admit it, but it was. And Kaya was a sucker for ritual and celebratory food. And attention.
Chief petty officer - how'd that happen?
Kaya and a few others in the enlisted barracks had put together an informal, unapproved pre-event that had gotten a little rowdy, so Kaya was a little flushed when she arrived exactly on time at the park. The place was packed, there was a stage, a band tuning up, and food everywhere.
"Ladies and gentlebeings, thank you all for coming," Judy began her quick, prepared remarks...
She tucked herself in at the side, and sniped a glass of something chartreuse that walked by. Speeches and promotions began in earnest, everyone on brand. Eastman with her family, Quinn and Baker whispering and blushing, and it occurred to Kaya - she was supposed to get someone to pin her on.
"Vek'tema..." she muttered to herself. Luckily her mate Tarin Jin was within arm's reach. "Jin, you have to pin me on," Kaya whispered.
Jin was not pleased. "Are you kidding me?"
"And give a speech," Kaya added then gave a little wave. "You'll do great. Don't worry about. It doesn't matter. Just wing it."
Jin was still not pleased. "Kaya Som, I do not wing things."

Kova began to wonder how necessary it was to have an escort. Would the rest of the recipients need someone to adorn them with them with their new rank? Seeing how she downed that drink demonstrated to Kova the importance the symbolism was to the security officer. "Is it a requirement?" Kova asked. "Could one of your colleagues stand in?" Humans... all their forethought into celebrations, and they had no contingency for this? It just goes to show how their arrogance suited them and only them. Clearly, they hadn't thought of everything, as Jovireh seemed to be proving now.

[Park - Deck 6, Front Ear] Isaiah's reaction after bringing him into the extremely small circle regarding Leanna's surprise had definitely been worthwhile. Keeping such a secret was difficult to an extent but it felt good to share it. However before she could respond, the ceremony got underway and she watched Judy and her adorable grandson alongside Isaiah. Joining in with the applause, Thea had just enough time to register the kind words from Judy before Isaiah took hold of her hand and led her up to the podium after she realised that they had been called. Give her an emergency or surgery and she was steady as a rock, but standing in front of everyone was a little nervewracking. Although quickly pulled it together as Isaiah followed Michael by giving a speech. Her emotions threatened to get in the way but at the same time, appreciated everything that Judy and her boyfriend had said. Happy that she had gotten to recreate this special moment of affixing the new pip with him and everyone as she then returned his gentle kiss. Now it was her turn to speak as she stepped up and looked out to the crowd. " I promised myself that I wouldn't cry but let me begin by saying thank you Captain and Isaiah for those kind and heartfelt words. Until you hear something like it, you don't realise that it's actually you that people are talking about and I appreciate every single word. I will admit that I was uncertain about taking on this role but as I look out, I see friends, colleagues and realise how lucky I am to be part of this family that we've created".Thea then paused and looked at Isaiah with a happy smile, then returned her attention to the front. " It was the man I loved who showed me that I could do this and he has been my rock these last few months and I couldn't be any more prouder to be this crew's official XO, which brings me to my first piece of official business, if Kaya Som would like to join me up here".

[Park - Front Ear] " Yes and the company of course" Lea quipped playfully as Riyo agreed to her suggestion, once the others had dispersed. Although as Judy diverted everyone's attention towards the lectern as the ceremony got started. Leanna stood beside Riyo and listened, thinking how cute Michael was as said his part. Then as Isaiah and Thea were called up, Leanna was happy to continue to watch. That was until an attractive server known as Candy approached her and Riyo and focused on her Imzadi, whilst ignoring who he was with. Instead of being jealous which was something that she didn't do, Lea found the whole thing highly amusing. In fact she admired Candy's direct approach and boldness as she attempted to hit on Riyo. Although once he had recovered from the shock and gave his order. There was a very subtle hint made when he placed his hand on her back and asked what she wanted. " I'll have a Samarian Sunset please Candy".
