[Matthew Harmon - The Pit] A mining tool was thrust upon Harmon which he took and pretended to use as he continued looking around. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw someone blue being beaten. There was no point intervening so he slowly made his way in his direction, eventually reaching him once the guards had moved on. He reached out to help Shavan up. “Have you seen Charlie?” He asked, worried about what could have happened to his only real friend. “...or any of the others?” He said somewhat sheepishly. [Charlie Fox - The Pit, Dalab Mountains]Darkness. Soft, not hard. Sleep was never hard. It was delicious; that blissful absence of thought. Then, a noise. A tap, a voice, in the distance, someone shouted. Far away, but getting closer. No. She would not open her eyes. She would fight the pull toward unwelcome consciousness. Futile, really. Reality hit her like a ton of bricks, and Charlie groaned. She was thirsty, that was her first thought. Her second was that her head felt warm. Her third was that she lived. If she lived, then perhaps the others did, too. She opened her eyes and immediately regretted it. The contents of her stomach surged within, unstoppable, and sprayed all over the rocky, uneven ground where she lay. She eyed the mess, then tried to turn away from it and onto her back, away from the sight and the smell of her weakness. Something clanged and scraped against the ground, and her arms rose slowly toward the strange, metallic collar around her neck. "Stylish..." She muttered, as understanding finally completely dawned. She was in the prison camp. She had to find Matt. The others. All but she and Kova were Fleet. It made sense to imprison them, they posed no real immediate threat. But the Fleeters? The problems they might cause? It would be easier and make more sense to kill them outright and declare it an accident. She needed to know. Using a nearby rough, stone wall, she pulled herself upward, fighting off waves of dizziness as she moved. Some of her hair was stuck to the side of her face and neck, where blood from a head wound had dried. She ignored it, grimacing once or twice when a movement caused an unexpected tug to her scalp. They'd taken her jacket, her eyewear, all of the tools in her pockets and most importantly, her backpack. She still had her boots though, that was something. And this snazzy new necklace, too. Bastards. She started walking, slowly at first, feeling some lingering stiffness in her knees. Eyes squinted as they flickered here and there, searching for her people, trying to remember what some of the Kurjarian glyphs she was seeing on signs and walls meant. She chose one direction and committed to it, and that was when she came across a familiar looking body, sprawled across the open walkway. [Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia Prison - The Pit][...] The dark corridor suddenly opened up before her, and she recoiled away from the sudden bright lights that filled the room beyond, throwing her uninjured arm across her eyes. Shouts and metal ringing against stone echoed loudly, her head throbbing painfully from the assault to her senses. Everything spun sharply once more, and she fell back into the peace of silent darkness. Her body sprawled across the path above the slaves hard at work, clearly visible to the next person who walked that way. It only remained to be seen if that person would be friend or foe. "O'Connell?" She asked, her voice initially coming out hoarse. "Hey, Ensign!" Stronger then as she approached and knelt down to examine her. She reached out a hand to press against the woman's neck, searching for a pulse. Please, please...A sharp stab of pain began at her neck, and then ran through her entire body, purple lightning crackling over her exposed skin. She called out in pain, the noise almost like a screech, and she dropped forward beside the pilot. "Motherfu-""Attention Kurjarian workers! If you are upright, you can dig!"The voice was disembodied, coming from above through some sound system hidden in the rocks. Charlie looked up, searching for the origin and roared a jumble of curses and threats. The response was another shock to her collar. "Upright!"Breathless and face scrunched up in pain, Charlie did as she was told. "On your feet, O'Connell."

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - The Pit] A pale pink hand appeared in front of him, and he looked up with some relief to see Harmon standing there. Good. Accepting the help up, Shavan got to his feet, doing his best to ignore the ache. As painful as it was, he’d probably be worse off if he was human.. which made the question all the more pressing. “No, I haven't seen anyone. I just woke up in an empty cell… and then found this place.” And managed to piss off the guards within about ten seconds. If the same thing had happened to Harmon, then it was likely that the others, including Charlie, were in a similar state close by. In the distance, a computerized voice came through a speaker. Attention Kurjarian workers! If you are upright, you can dig! Shavan gripped the mining tool in a better position to dig, though his attention stayed focused on Harmon, and looking around for any sign of the others. Matthew Harmon

Tag: Syl O'Connell [Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia Prison - The Pit]A vaguely familiar voice was calling through the darkness, cold fingers pressing against the side of her throat. Her brow furrowed against the fuzziness in her brain, willing herself to focus. Before she could force her body to move, the darkness was split by a white hot pain that seared the flesh of her neck, and she cried out, her hand flying up to press against the inevitable burn, only to feel smooth, freshly warmed metal. A collar. How did she not notice that before? Oh that's right, it was difficult to notice anything beyond the pulse pounding in her head. The same feminine voice ordered her to her feet, and she groaned as she moved her hand back to the ground beneath her. "Please don't call me that..." was all she managed to say. After all, the moment her father found out about this he would undoubtedly remove her from the family records. She really didn't need to be reminded of that right now. After a few moments she managed to stagger to her feet, opening her eyes and looking at the woman that had spoken to her. The reporter... At least she wasn't the only one still alive. Cradling her swollen and bruised left arm against her chest once more, she motioned with her other hand towards the pit below. "If we're going to find any of the others... My guess it will be down there." That did seem to be where all the 'workers' were being corralled. It didn't take a genius to figure out their situation. Do what you were told, or get hurt. Do what you were told, and you'd probably still get hurt anyway. Story of my life. Hopefully by now the Captain would have realized their mission to release the shrews had not gone smoothly. All they had to do was stay alive long enough to be rescued. And apparently... Staying alive meant digging.

They were then interupted by a voice coming through some speaker politely encouraging them to dig. He raised his mining tool and continued digging as he kept talking. "We'd best stick together, splitting up seems like a bad idea," he continued looking around trying to see if he could spot any of the others. "We're going to need a way out of here. Any ideas?"

Charlie hissed, bewilderment coming close to overtaking the pained expression on her face. She'd been sure this ensign's name was O'Connell... Charlie had a good mind for those kinds of things, helped her remember sources to cite. But she had no time to try and untangle more Fleeter weirdness. Finding O'Connell alive gave her some hope for the others, so she gritted her teeth and forced herself to move. At the pilot's gesture toward the pit, the size and horror of which Charlie was only now appreciating, she stepped toward the descending walkway to follow the slope below. "Labour camp," she muttered in observation, her eyes flickering from what awaited them, to the injury O'Connell was cradling against her chest. "Would have been kinder to just kill us." She didn't expect that they'd last long here. The Caldonians would find some way to compound their misery. From her peripheral vision, she caught a flash of familiar colour. Standing before the wall of the quarry, crude mining tool in hand, was Shavan Th'zhaar. She quickened her step, eyes alert, scanning for... Charlie let out another string of curses, though this time they weren't spoken in anger. Next to Shavan was Matthew Harmon, looking equally as ineffective as his colleague, but a welcomed sight, nonetheless. "Spotted," she said to the pilot, nodding toward the pair. Keen for everyone to stay together, she moved toward Harmon, picking up one of the small, antique pick-axes on the way. She came to a stop on Harmon's left, and reached out to touch his arm. She'd have flung herself at him in a hug had she been sure that the Caldonian All-Seeing Eye wouldn't have shocked her in punishment. She didn't know the rules here yet, but she still couldn't help the small act of rebellion. "Kova?" She asked softly, eyes taking in her friend's injuries, then Shavan's, then subtly searching beyond their small gang for the sign of the familiar Andorian blue. She began to make a show of "getting to work", but she knew she wouldn't be able to physically heft these tools for long.

Her steps were still hesitant, as she felt like her knees might give out on her any second, but thankfully she made it into the pit without further incident. Syl remained silent, as she really didn't have anything to tell them, and began an awkward attempt at digging. She was listening to them, though, hoping they had already started formulating a plan to get out of that hell hole.

And in any case there nothing to be done about it now. “I’ll live.”
He nodded when Harmon said they should stick together. It might draw attention, but they already stood out amid the Kurjarians. If they were going to get out of this together, they needed to stay close enough to communicate. A guard passed closer to them and he swung the pickaxe at the rock, gritting his teeth as his injuries protested. He tried to focus on the question of getting out of there, which brought his mind back to the conversation with Arav just before they were caught. Whether they were breaking out or breaking in, it would take the same types of actions and skills. “We carry on with the mission. We’ll just have to start doing the information gathering on our own. Watch the guards’ routine, figure out the layout of this place, where the exits and control rooms are. If it exists, it can be broken into. We just have to plan it right.” Maybe they could still find and get help from Solin, though he wasn’t sure any of the Kurjarians could be trusted. Shavan looked around again to finally see Charlie Fox approaching them, with O’Connell not far behind. They too looked worse for wear, but were a welcome sight. When Charlie asked if they had seen Kova, he simply shook his head no, and tried not to worry yet about what that might mean. Matthew Harmon Charlie Fox Syl O'Connell

[Matthew Harmon - 'The Pit']
Harmon tried swinging the pickaxe with his good arm though that made it rather ineffective, and he figured the guards would be none too pleased, so he tried to grip it with both arms, even the wounded one, and just swing it carefully and slowly so it looked like he was doing it properly. It still hurt but probably less than a beating would. He soon forgot about his pain when Charlie found him. He felt her hand on his arm and turned around to face her, initially going to hug her but he quickly realised that would likely attract undue attention. And weird glances from the others. "Are you okay?" he asked, glad she was at least alive. "Ensign," he then nodded curtly as he noticed Syl was with her. "We haven't seen Kova," he shook his head before returning to pretending to work. "Shavan was just suggesting we try and figure out the layout of this place. Guard routines, and everything. Continue our mission," he explained quietly as he kept on pretending to mine. "I agree with him, if we're going to get out of here, getting whatever information we can will be essential," he then paused for a second and stopped swinging his pickaxe. "We were clearly betrayed. No way they found us by accident in that way. That was a planned and coordinated attack. The question is, how did they know? I think Arav is likely trustworthy. It's possible they killed him to tie up loose ends, but he was clearly taken by surprise and went down fighting. A mole that was surprisingly executed probably wouldn't act that way. So, I think we should try and find Solin. She will talk to us, I know how to get through to her and get her to trust us. She's been here longer than us and may have relationships with other prisoners. She could really help us escape, and in return we can try and help her," he said. Charlie and Harmon had promised Jeren they would do what they could to help his people, and rescuing Solin was part of that. It just so happened that while attempting to free her would have been ill advised before, they now found themselves in a situation where it was logical. "We need to find Kova." She was no doubt going to be pissed and blame this all on Harmon, which at least this time was perhaps reasonable.

She was no doubt going to be pissed and blame this all on Harmon, which at least this time was perhaps reasonable. [Charlie Fox - The Pit]"I'll live," she responded simply to the query. For now, they were alive. That neither had seen Kova was her foremost worry. That the four of them had been released to the pits without her suggested she was elsewhere, hopefully also still alive. Perhaps she was considered too dangerous to release into the general population, or perhaps she'd sustained greater injuries than the others and was in some sort of medical wing. Whatever the case, it didn't change their mission. It just so happened to include escape for them now, too, not just Solin. Charlie nodded in silent agreement with what Matthew was saying. She'd seen the look on Arav's face after he'd pulled the pin on that grenade. He lived for the cause, he had always planned on dying for it. It must have been someone else who'd sold them out and brought the Caldonians down on their heads. "We need to find Kova, and Solin. I'm assuming they let us sleep at some stage," she said, a note of hesitation in her voice as she glanced upward toward the walkways, "We can divide and conquer then. They likely have a shuttle pad for transport, and since the only problems the Caldonians have out here might be the odd Kurjarian raider, I doubt they'll have anything by way of ground to air defenses." She offered Ensign Whatsherface a tight smile. "I assume our pilot here could handle a bit of alien flight tech."She paused for a moment, her thoughts turning to her own little bit of alien flight tech. She could only hope that Olsen's programming kicked in as expected, and the little holodrone was staying well away. "Provided the Caldonians didn't spot and destroy Olsen, the Mac should be aware of what happened to us. It's part of his emergency protocols."

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia Prison - The Pit]She gave a small nod at Harmon's greeting. He was favoring one arm also... And the Andorian looked far worse than any of them. So their 'hosts' gave beatings as well as shock therapy. That was good to know. The conversation quickly turned to escape, and finding Kova, and completing what they came here to do. When betrayal was brought up, Syl joined in for the first time. "Any Kurjarian would be defeating their own purpose by ratting on us. Our 'Caldonian liason' on the other hand? Mighty convenient he decided to stay behind at the last minute."She struck at the rock with the tool in her hand, the sound causing a burst of pain in her head and a flash of white across her vision. Oh this was going to be interesting... The reporter suggested she fly one of the Caldonian shuttles to safety, and a broad, mischievous grin spread across her face as she looked over her shoulder at her. "It might take me a few seconds to figure out the controls, but I'm sure I can handle it." That would give her something else to think about for awhile at least... The chance to pilot an alien ship in a bold prison break... While it would do absolutely nothing to appease her father, it would likely be a good start to her reputation on the station.

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Dalab Mountains] How in the hell this was still a discussion, Kova would never know. It wasn't that Kova didn't want to rescue this woman. The fact was that they simply couldn't. Perhaps it was a genetic default for pink-skins to admit defeat. Though, if that were so, then she didn't understand what Shavan's excuse was. It was a debate that didn't persist, however, as all hell seemed to break loose. It was the moment Kova had been expecting, but still hoping wouldn't come to pass: the double-cross. Out of seemingly nowhere, Caldonian soldiers appeared. They made short work of Arav's men. Harmon had tried to put up a fight, but Kova was certain that in the commotion she'd seen him hit by weapons fire. As much as it would have been prudent to check on him, the opportunity to look after everyone's welfare didn't seem to present itself. Everyone dove for cover. Kova allowed her eyes to linger in Charlie's direction for nearly a second to long, when she sensed him behind her. Sneaking up on an Andorian wasn't easily done. Kova quickly pivoted on her feet, dodging the blow from the butt of a rifle and seizing the side of it. Her movement seemed to catch the soldier off guard as her own hands took hold of the weapon between his grips and forced it up against his mouth. He groaned loudly, likely missing a few teeth. Kova, then wrestled the weapon free and drove it into his midsection before slamming it down across his back. The soldier fell to the ground, and Kova reached for the pistol she'd been given before. That was when she heard the explosion. Kova winced, her keen senses making her more sensitive to even the muffled blast. It was just the distraction that one of the soldiers needed. There was a sharp pain, and Kova instantly felt her knee buckle as her weight forced her to the desert ground. She didn't have the chance to inspect the injury. As soon as she lifted her head, the butt of a rifle rendered her entire world black.
[Caldonia Prison - The Pit] It was the pain that caused her to wake. Her attention turned to her knee to inspect the cause. The swelling alone was bad enough of a sign. Finding a stray stone, Kova managed to rip into the fabric of her pants and peel away enough to inspect the injury. In addition to the swelling, she could see that something more was wrong. Her knee was either dislocated or worse. Looking around, it didn't seem that medical attention was much of a priority around her. Her white mane was stained blue with her own blood. She could vaguely recall the series of events that had brought her here. Though, she couldn't help but wonder were the rest of her team were. Harmon had been shot. Was he dead? And Charlie?! Where the hell was Charlie? Shavan. And then there was the pilot... the rookie. This was probably the last thing she had signed up for. Kova tried to get to her feet. It proved to be more of a challenge than after chasing a bottle of Andorian ale with Romulan ale. Though as soon as she got to her feet and attempted to take a step, Kova found herself crashing to the ground once again. "Roozh!" she cursed. There were a few other prisoners that simply moved on past Kova, with no intention of helping her. She grimaced at the sight and then felt a jolt ripple through her body. It didn't take long for her to realize that she had been fitted with some sort of metallic collar. Clearly, the sort that motivated people to be anything other than stationary. A guard barked a single order at her: upright. The sound of a series of blows from someone else not far away forced the Andorian to get to her feet. It took forever for her to reach a set of tools. One of them seemed to have some wear and tear, as Kova was able to procure only the rod. She worked as quickly as she could to fashion a splint, but just as she was tying it against her leg with more fabric she'd torn from her clothes she felt another jolt, followed by the demand for her to be upright yet again. The motivation to not be someone's punching bag was more than enough. A stifled grunt escaped her lips as she secured the split and then got to her feet. Each step... correction, limp... felt as if she was literally grinding her knee into tiny fragments. Her movements were slow, but at least she didn't seem to earn any more of the her captors' ire. With an axe tool in hand, she gingerly limped her way along the mining area. Everywhere she look, there were nothing more than Caldonian guards and Kurjarians prisoners. A handful of pink-skins and an Orion-Andorian would typically stand out in such a crowd. However, there was nothing typical about this. Charlie was nowhere to be found. Shavan... the rookie, they were gone. And Harmon... he was probably dead. Kova was alone. Alone, and on a planet... in a prison... with a busted knee, with a bunch of soldiers that got their jollies from abusing their prisoners. A Federation penal colony was a spa retreat compared to this. Kova certainly felt as if she'd been in worst spots than this, but none of them had seemed this hopeless.

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - The Pit] Everyone seemed in agreement about finding Solin, and after a brief hesitation Shavan nodded. They could use any help they could get, and didn’t have many other options. Talking to a prisoner who had been here for longer could be a valuable part of getting the sort of information they needed. And of course, if Kova was being held somewhere else, they would try to find her too. He turned away from them as he listened, so as to prevent the Caldonians from noticing them standing around talking. With difficulty, he forced himself to take another swing at the rock, trying not to show how much the action cost him. As the whispered discussion continued, he considered their other options. Charlie said that Olsen was still out there, but without access to it that wouldn’t be any use. Harmon had said back in the runabout that they were on their own. If the Caldonians and the crew of the Mac both knew they were there, Starfleet would have to renounce all ties with them. Anything else just didn’t make sense. “We can’t deal with who set us up if we don’t get out of here first. But I agree, any help would be useful. What else do you know about this Solin?” He looked between Charlie and Harmon, who seemed most familiar with the Kurjarians, wondering if they had any ideas on where to start looking for her. Fortunately this place seemed pretty low-tech, which would make getting around at least a little easier. Finding out where the shuttles docked was would be a good start. “They must regularly transport the ore out of here. Stealing a transport won’t be a problem, once we get to one.” Shavan could also help with that when the time came. He actually grinned a little when he saw the similar expression on O’Connell’s face. Maybe they had something in common. He looked up, trying to count the exits to the mining area. His gaze hardened when he saw the guard that had beat him… but then, a cluster of prisoners moved, and he spotted a flash of blue behind them. “Up there. It’s Kova,” he quickly pointed it out to the others, relieved to see that she was here after all. Matthew Harmon Charlie Fox Syl O'Connell Kova Sh'qaleq

[Matthew Harmon - 'The Pit']
Harmon was glad that Charlie was okay, but didn't have time to dwell on it as they needed to formulate a plan. Stealing a shuttle was a good idea, and Syl seemed to think she was up to it. "We have to be prepared for if the Mac doesn't come to our aid, which is fairly likely. They're in the middle of a major diplomatic incident now, and the Admiralty is still keen to play nice with the Caldonians," he was still hoping they would be able to come and rescue them, however he wasn't going to hold his breath. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst," he added. As for the snitch, there were enough Kurjarian collaborators and potential incentives for them that it could have been a Kurjarian, however Xoteck was still number one on the suspect list. Still, Shavan was right, it didn't really matter now. "Solin was Chief Jeren's wife. The one who...visited the station a while back," he explained in response to Shavan's question. "He says she is well respected among the Kurjarians, when she talks they listen. She's smart but passionate. Jeren promised she would help us." They then spotted Kova. Good. She was alive at least. With her back on the team their chances of escape were slowly rising from impossible to slightly less impossible. "Good to see you aren't dead," he said once Kova had joined the group, which in terms of Kova and Harmon's unique relationship was a rather touching and kind thing for him to have said.

{Quotes} [Ens. It’s Kova,” he quickly pointed it out to the others, relieved to see that she was here after all. [Charlie Fox - The Pit]Charlie's mind hadn't even processed the simple truth that the other Fleeters would leave them behind. It hadn't yet occurred to her. Strange, being that she was normally so cynical when it came to them, but Matt's words metaphorically punched her right in the gut. Her face paled even further and she averted her eyes, allowing the sounds of the other three to wash over her as they spoke quietly and planned. She felt lost in that moment, cut off, at sea. She'd spent all of her life relying on nobody but herself, why should that change now? Still, she couldn't shake it, and it wasn't until Shavan said Kova's name that she returned to the horrible present. Her eyes flew upward and she dropped the ancient tool to the ground. Muttering something unintelligible to the others, Charlie stepped back from the immovable wall of rock, and began walking parallel to the walkway above, where the Andorian seemed to be struggling. She began the short climb up the ramp toward her when her collar activated. The shock was quick, but effective. She ground her teeth, jaw clenched, hands reaching up automatically to grab at the blasted device. "If you are upright, you can dig!"The same voice as before. Her hands shook with tremors as she glanced upward, trying once more to find the source of the sound. If looks could kill the Caldonian manning these shock collars would have already been turned inside out. "I'm going to help her!" She snarled, voice raspy with pain, but insistent nonetheless. "Two upright workers are better than none, moron!"When no immediate response came, Charlie kept moving toward Kova. "We're all here," she told her in greeting, then reached out to offer her an arm, eyes sliding toward the mangled leg and the inadequate repair job. We'll be dead in under three days.
