[NPC - Xoteak - Runabout USS Batfish]
The runabout, stuffed with personnel and shrews, made its way towards the surface. Xoteak, eagerly, stood, watching the mountain terrain unfold. It was morning in the capital, but dusk here where they were just about to land.

[Matthew Harmon - Runabout Batfish]Harmon sat in the co-pilot seat, next to Ensign O'Connell as they cruised along the tops of the mountains, keeping a low altitude. By now, he had explained to the team he had assembled that they were not, in fact just letting the shrews loose. Before they had left, Baram had given Harmon coordinates to meet with some of his men, who would help guide them through the rugged mountain passes. The goal was to detail, document, and record the trillium mines, where Kurjarians were worked as slave labour. If the Federation, and its citizens wanted their trillium they would be forced to see how it was extracted. No more blissful ignorance. If all went relatively well, that is. There was a high chance they would be spotted or something would go wrong. The runabout had been set up to automatically relay information sent from Olsen to the Mac. If they were caught, there would at least be a good chance that what they were to find would still see the light of day. "If any of you want out, this is your last chance. You can stay with the runabout," he told them as they approached the landing site. "This is a...dubiously legal operation," he reaffirmed. Dubious because he hadn't actually been ordered not to do it, so that was almost as good as being authorized right? He didn't care, it was the right thing to do. "We might get in a lot of shit with the Caldonians, the Admirals, or both. But if we stand for nothing, if we let this slide, then what does that say about us? About the Federation? The atrocities occurring here cannot continue."

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia - Runabout Batfish]
The Ensign at the helm was feeling even more excited than she had been when they left the dinner. Combined with the thrill she always felt in the pilot's seat, there was a perpetual smile on her face as she listened to the Commander's spiel. Part of her knew this was exactly the type of operation Admiral Ellis would want to know about, but she was a little too excited about being included in this operation to worry about that now.
Syl didn't say anything when he gave them the opportunity to stay in the runabout. She'd be damned if she missed out on this. Her hands glided effortlessly over the controls, her gaze flickering between the navigational panel and the view port revealing the scenery up ahead. It was a shame that something so beautiful was being used for activities so heinous.

The situation was more clear-cut, less dangerous really, for her. This was what she was paid to do. Kova, too, she was free to make whatever decisions she wanted without having to consider the red tape consequences that the Fleeters did. Her eyes slid toward the Andorian, her expression reflecting the mischief she was feeling within. But it wasn't just that. Charlie had waited half a year to get to this place, and she was close to finishing what she started with Jeren in the Blue Beta all those months ago. She was deep into the shades of grey between justice and duty, and she felt somewhat comfortable there. She returned her attention to the PADD in her hands, going over her extensive notes, while Olsen slid through the air toward the small runabout's main viewer, and hovered for a time between O'Connell and Harmon. An oncoming vista while approaching from the air was always a good opener to any location piece. "Don't forget we're here to shine a light," she tacked on to Matt's speech, "The information will be the hero, so take care of yourselves."Don't be stupid. She grinned again. This time, it was excitement. She definitely had a screw loose.

Shavan sat in the back of the runabout, watching the landscape pass by before turning his attention to the other members of the team as they spoke, some final words before they landed. They were almost there.
There was no way he was backing out. This was exactly the type of mission that suited him, especially now that the full extent of what they were doing had been explained. “Let's do this,” he replied with a grin.
He hadn’t been raised to see the Federation through a rose-tinted lens like the rest of them; what was going on here needed to be exposed, rules and resources be damned. Shavan had never cared about being caught at “dubiously legal” things before, and wasn’t about to start now when it was most important, and would actually do some good.

Shavan had never cared about being caught at “dubiously legal” things before, and wasn’t about to start now when it was most important, and would actually do some good. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Runabout Batfish ] From her seat, Kova glared in Xoteak's direction. She still didn't trust him. Why? Because he thought he was looking at a one-way trip deep into Federation space in exchange for his help. With that prospect dangling in front of him, she was sure that he'd do anything to get it. And seeing as Harmon probably hadn't given him any specifics, Xoteak probably had more latitude than he deserved. Either way, this was Harmon's op. He'd run it the way he wanted to, and he didn't waste time letting them know just that. The Intelligence officer laid it out. Unsanctioned mission... screwed if you're caught... yadda, yadda, yadda... get the facts, watch your own back. The get out of jail free card at this point was the option to wait in the runabout. At those words, Kova rolled her eyes. She had also expressed concerns about bringing the rookie on this mission. They didn't come any greener than O'Connell, and she seemed all too eager to please. If Harmon told her to jump she'd get a ruler to make sure she met the mark. There wasn't anything wrong with her skill, from what Kova could see. She just thought Harmon should have selected someone that knew how to make a choice and not just follow orders. Kova looked at her console briefly. She was testing the telemetry between Oslen and Mac's computers. If this was all about the info, it damned well better have a way of getting there. There was also the matter of a worm she had installed in the Caldonian computer network. It was just set to transcribe any communications that mentioned these coordinates, their runabout, Starfleet and Federation. Not exactly a heads up, but could certainly pick up on gossip. Kova's eyes narrowed as Olsen moved towards the front of the runabout. As Olsen zoomed Harmon out of frame, Kova's eyes narrowed. Was that a bald spot? Even Charlie seemed eager for what was coming. The Andorian caught the look on Charlie's face, a slight smirk spread across her lips. Admittedly, this was the type of investigation that was in Charlie's wheel house. Kova knew that for a fact. However, these Fleeters seemed to be a little too excited about breaking the rules. Hopefully, that wouldn't come back to bite them in the ass. Shavan was the next to speak up, his enthusiasm behind what was to come slipping out as well. "Not you too," Kova said as she shook her head. "Pretty soon, you lot are going to be an unscrupulous band of rebels: cutting in line, inadequate tipping, submitting reports late. Consider me fearful for my life," Kova teased. Her attention moved towards Harmon once again. "Assuming we've reached the Q&A portion of your presentation: are you invoking kiddie-rules, or giving this lot live rounds?" Kova needed to know if she should be in the front or in the back of the line once they landed.

[NPC - Xoteak - Runabout Batfish]Xoteak had to think about this, since staying seemed like quite the appealing option. He would probably be killed if he was caught, what with his committing an act of high treason. Still, he would dare risk it. He followed the Andorian's eyes to Harmon, and noticed something in his hair. Perhaps it was a streak of silver (he'd noticed the Captain tried very hard to conceal her white hairs), or balding, or just an illusion to his eyes. He wasn't used to dealing with hirsute species. And then Kova spoke, so pessimistically. "Is she always like that?" he asked, quietly, of the other one who seemed to be of her species, Shavan.

[Matthew Harmon - Runabout Batfish]Charlie's enthusiasm concerned him. He'd picked her to come along, and he wouldn't have had it any other way, but he knew she could be stubborn and headstrong, which he hoped wouldn't lead her to do anything that might put her, or the team in anymore danger. O'Connell was an unknown quantity. He wouldn't usually have brought someone so untested along, but they needed a pilot and what he'd read about her indicated she'd be eager to prove herself. That meant she was less likely to cause issues about the mission. If that would lead them into danger, however, was another question. He hadn't worked much with Shavan, but what he did know was he was handy with weapons on the Medici and wasn't going to cause him any unnecessary problems. As for Kova, as annoying as she was, she got shit done and thrived on breaking the rules. Of course, she remained as malcontent as ever. Still, she raised a good question, not that he would admit that."Baram is sending some people to help guide us. They're bringing us weapons. If we have to use them, it's better that they can't be identified as Starfleet phasers. If we have to use them, they won't be on stun. Can't take the risk," he said stoically. "No room for kiddie rules," they were going to be in a world of trouble if they were caught no matter what. Stunning or killing wouldn't make much of a difference, and using stun was too much of a risk both to the possibility of them being uncovered and to their chances should a firefight break out. "They're a last resort however, ideally we stay out of sight and avoid attracting too much attention. If we are caught, we can't leave witnesses. It'll look like a Kurjarian raid." As he finished speaking, they reached their destination, a small clearing in the rugged, desert mountains.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia - Runabout Batfish]
Those gathered in the runabout behind her all seemed rather eager to take part in this not-so-legal operation. The more that was revealed, the more enthusiasm entered their voices, and Syl made a silent mental note to include that in her report to Admiral Ellis. If breaking the law was so commonplace among this crew that no one batted an eye... Of course, she was still feeling her own share of excitement, though hers was more for the chance to finally work, rather than wandering around aimlessly wearing the uniform of an organization that no longer wanted her. Her stomach knotted a little as the man beside her said that the weapons they'd be given would not be set to stun. The smile on her face faltered just a little bit, but she said nothing. All she could do was hope and pray that she wouldn't have to be the one to pull the trigger. "Approaching the landing coordinates," she spoke for the first time since taking off, her voice carrying to the back so everyone could prepare. Not that they needed to... The landing took a couple moments longer than they might be used to, but it was seamless, with barely a bump as the runabout settled on the ground.

As soon as the shuttle doors opened, she stepped outside, eyes scanning for Baram's people.

[Lt Shavan Th’zhaar - Runabout Batfish]
As usual, Kova spoke up to voice some skepticism. Shavan rolled his eyes. If he was excited about this, it didn’t come from breaking the rules (which was nothing new), but from the goal of their mission and finally getting to do something useful. He couldn’t resist smirking a little when the Caldonian guide asked if she was always like that. “Yes, she is. Don’t take it personally.”
However, at Kova’s question he looked up with more seriousness. The impression he got from Harmon was that he would have the sense to tell them to do what was necessary, and in this case he was right. Shavan nodded grimly after the situation regarding the weapons was explained. It wasn’t something he enjoyed thinking about, but when it came down to it, he would do whatever needed to be done.
They reached the landing site, and he stood ready to disembark with the rest of the team.

There were people like that in every species, and every occupation. "I won't."With the runabout landing, he leapt giddily onto his feet and off it. He recognized the surroundings in the dim twilight, for it was not so far from the work camp where his father (a slave) had helped construct the Dalab Wall. The wall itself, meant to keep the Free Tribesmen out, was nearby. It was hard to make out, but it was there, below this hill and a short distance away.

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Runabout Batfish -> Dalab Mountains, Caldonia] As Kova got her answer from Harmon, she had to admit that she wasn't thrilled about it. The weapons they were supposed to receive were from Baram's people. In her opinion, it was yet another unknown that they had not trouble over. She understood the idea not using Starfleet-issued phasers, but she certainly wasn't comfortable receiving weapons from an unknown. They could be faulty, sabotaged... ancient. If these people showed up slingshots and blow darts, she would literally kick Harmon right in his ass. "Seems you've thought of everything," Kova said, with a veiled hint of sarcasm. Her attention returned to what she could control, as Ensign O'Connell announced that they were reaching their landing site. Kova made one last check of the telemetry from Olsen as she heard Charlie asked if everything was good. The Andorian looked towards Charlie and nodded. "The link is fine," Kova answered. In her opinion, it was the only thing that was actually going according to plan at the moment. As she stood, she checked some of her own gear. Her interactive lens was fully charged. It could come in handy, assuming they came across any actual sign of civilization. Inside were also provisions, a PADD and an ushaan-tor she'd brought with her. It wasn't a phaser, but it'd fare better than a blow dart. Stuffing the items back into her pack, she slid it onto her back and stood ready to disembark as well. Her hands flexed in the fingerless leather gloves she wore. Kova waited patiently for Harmon to issue orders. It was his op, and for the time being, she was going to hold any suggestions she had to herself. After all, Harmon may be an ass, but he wasn't a fool. At least, the Andorian was hoping that he'd prove her right.

[Matthew Harmon - Dalab Mountains]Charlie seemed less than impressed by the prospect that they may need to kill people. That was understandable, but he knew that Kova and Shavan at least would be by his side if it was necessary. He wasn't going to force any of them to carry, or use any weapons. They then landed and Harmon followed Charlie out of the runabout, and stretched for a moment before looking around. It seemed they were alone. After a moment of squinting into the distance for any sign of life, he turned to Xoteak "What is that wall?" he asked, having noticed the strange shape in distantly in front of them. While he didn't openly indicate it, he was beginning to be concerned that Baram had screwed him. Jeren did warn him about Baram. Around ten minutes passed when suddenly he noticed a noise behind him and looked across the rugged desert landscape to see a number of beasts ridden by humanoids rapidly approaching. They were deceptively quick and soon reached the group, the lead rider dismounting and approaching Harmon. "Matthew? I was sent by Baram. My name is Arav," the man introduced himself. He was shorter than most Kurjarians seemed to be and not particularly heavily built either. The rather small man was not how Harmon had pictured Arav, the loose cannon and aggressive warrior that Jeren warned about, the opposite of how he described Baram in many ways. It was curious that Baram seemed to have entrusted him this mission. Or perhaps Baram was hoping it would go badly. As with much of this mission, working with him was a gamble, but one that Harmon had to make. "We will take you to the labour camps. But first..." he turned around to one of his men who had disembarked behind him and was carrying a rifle, which he handed to Harmon. He inspected it, unsure what to make of it. It seemed battered and dirty but appeared to have held up. "Don't let her rough exterior fool you, she's sturdy. Built to survive the desert. Not a lot can make that thing malfunction. They're reliable weapons," his men approached the rest of the group offering an assortment of similar weapons and sidearms to choose from. "We must get going quickly, we need to make good use of the cover of darkness," he said, walking back over to his mount and preparing to hop back on it. "When you are ready, you will each ride with one of my men," he said. "We can talk more on the way."

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Caldonia - Dalab Mountains]
After going through the standard procedures for securing the runabout while they were away, the Ensign followed the others outside. The mountains were even more beautiful out here, and she took a moment to simply take in the view. Once they got started, there wouldn't be any time for enjoying the view, and the things they were about to see were likely far from beautiful.
Their guides arrived, and Syl accepted the sidearm that was offered to her. Hopefully she wouldn't need to use it, but she didn't feel like not being able to protect herself either. Securing the holster against her hip, she turned and examined the two-legged beasts they were expected to ride. They were certainly unlike anything she had ever seen before, and didn't look to be nearly as comfortable to ride as horses. But before she could ask any questions - or have any second thoughts - one of the riders came up next to her and offered a hand to help her up. Syl hesitated for just a moment, eyeing the Kurjarian and his mount nervously, before accepting his hand and letting him pull her up onto the creature's back.
