[Jungle – Unknown Planet]
Hunt continues his walk in the humid environment of the jungle. He felt a little hot and had some difficulty breathing, but that was normal in a high humidity environment. The environment reminded him of tropical rainforest back on earth. It looked beautiful and was glad to be out of the ship and get some fresh air. As the walk continued, he listened to the Chief Science Officer as he mentioned that they were close to the fruit. “Seeing the amount of vegetation in the area, it stands for the reason that Rainfall and water will be close to the fruit as well.”
He stopped for a second and asked, “Commander, I was thinking of climbing one of the trees. With the higher point of view, I might be able to see more of the terrain and the location that we are in. I haven’t climbed one since I was a kid on Earth.” The Doctor mentioned. He admitted the idea of a Doctor climbing a tree sounded ridiculous, but it would give them a perspective of the terrain. It will also give them an idea if there are cliff, mountains, or valleys nearby.”

[Jungle Clearing - Unknown Planet] Now that the tent that she had been working was up, Thea felt a sense of accomplishment, especially with them now having shelter. They didn't know how long they would be here for and at least they had one last thing to worry about. Wiping her hands on her uniform pants, Thea looked to Aravis as the Lieutenant reassured her and Sven that she would be okay and grinned at her next comment. Crazy ideas often turned out to be the most useful sometimes and considering the circumstances was willing to hear it and see if it would actually work. However before she could ask more about it, there was concern from the Doctor as Aravis suddenly got to her feet. Although the reason why soon became apparent as the flight officer's tone changed and gave a warning. Looking towards the black mass that had caused Aravis to get up from the jungle floor. Thea didn't know what it was, but it's appearance from nowhere and the way it seemed to get bigger, had her reaching for a phaser. " Let's stick together and see what it does, phasers on stun just in case it's not friendly, but only fire if absolutely necessary. If we have any tricorders left, we can try and get some scans".

[Base Camp - Jungle Clearing] Spreading out the last of the tents and trying not to give herself another injury by being careful. Thea looked over at Aravis when the pilot offered to take the first watch. Whilst she was still a little concerned that she wasn't able to stand just yet, it was also understandable but at least the pain had gone. Agreeing with Sven, that she only had to let them know if it got to much. " That's okay with me Lieutenant and yes just let us know, if you need a break".At her suggestion about the runabout, Thea looked towards the ship that was still balancing in the tree. Listening as both Aravis and Sven discussed it and shared their thoughts on the matter. Perhaps it would be something to revisit when the others returned as Sven then spoke about whether they focused on the runabout or boosting a signal to a transponder first. Thea knew that question was directed to her and knew what her answer would be. " Let's focus on boosting the signal first and we can always work on getting the runabout down, when the others get back".
Tag Ozu Saya Sven Aune |Jungle Clearing || lt. cmdr. Sven Aune|Sven paused what he was doing and gave the injured pilot his full attention. "Are you sure you're up for keeping watch at the moment?" He understood the importance of keeping the injured safe, but at the same time, they were short handed in this particular party. "It's okay if you're not. If you feel like you need to take a break let me know."He glanced back at the Roundabout. "Given the size of the ship, I don't think there will be any way a group of 7 will be able to move that thing around. A normal sized shuttle, possibly with some levers and simple machines. But that...." he shook his head. "It's highly doubtful. Unless we could get some sort of thruster control and use those to man handle it..."He went back to pounding stakes in the ground for one of the shelters. "I guess the question is, do we focus on boosting a signal to a transponder first, or work on trying to level that beast?" He addressed that question to the XO. That's why she was paid the big bucks. Tricorder readings and her own senses didn't pick up any life other than insects and the occasional bird, but there were still plenty of hazards on the ground. Without an actual path to follow, she had to pay extra attention to the roots jutting above the soil and the tangles of vines and branches that wove across the ground. The unfamiliar pressure in her mind remained steady and constant, but it was getting easier for her to ignore as she had something else to focus all of her attention on. [Jungle Clearing – Unknown Planet] Hunt listened to the instructions of the Chief Science Officer. The mission that they were assigned is a Standard Recon exploratory mission which should be relatively simple. They were there to see if the fruit and water source is viable for them. Looking at the preliminary terrain, it did not look that rough, and he had been training for this type of mission his entire life. “No, questions, Sir,” Hunt added to indicate that he had heard the briefing and acknowledged his role. As they began their walk, the Chief Science Officer informed him that he might need his help collecting samples. For Jonathan, this made logical sense. As a Doctor, he was also a Scientist, and he knew some basic sciences as required in Medical School. He was not close to an expert as Lt. Commander Quinn, but he felt he could play one on a play if needed. As he walked, he wondered about plays or theatre…do they still do exist anymore? He remembered that part of the weekend was that several crewmembers would showcase their talents so the rest of the ship could enjoy themselves. The entertainment was very different without holodecks. “ No problem, I would be more than happy to help you collect samples, Sir,” Hunt mentioned to his Senior officer. In reality, he did not mind, and it would make sense to have him make some scans with the Medical Tricorder. He continues his walk with a slight smile as he had plenty of equipment with him. As the walk continued, he noticed the Crewman, who believed he was nervous of needles or doctors. Hopefully, his conversation earlier would assure her that he is merely another human being. Hunt smiled at her question and thought for a second how to answer it. “ Technically…52 years,” Hunt commented with a slight smile. He knew the claim sounded outrageous but little did she know he was telling the truth. “I’ ve read your Medical Records, Crewman. But I did not read your personnel records, so what’s your specialty on the ship, and how long have you been serving on the Mac?” The Doctor inquired as he kept the conversation light as they continued on their walk. {Quoted Posts} [PO2 Jovireh Velal - Unknown Planet - Jungle Clearing]Jovireh nodded with a 'thank you' to the Commanders as they agreed to her joining the investigation. She gave Aune a grin as he added a bit of humor to his permission. Jov hadn't worked with Duff directly before, but she doubted either of them would be a problem for the rest of the team. When Aune said not to worry about what he'd initially planned on saying, she nodded and let it go. Once upon a time her anxiety would have nagged at her over not knowing, but over the years she had learned if the other person felt it wasn't important enough to talk about immediately, then it wasn't bad enough for her to stress over. She walked over to Alice, and double-checked her phaser and tricorder in preparation while waiting for the men to join them. Once they were all together, Quinn issued orders, and Jov nodded at taking point. Her tricorder beeped as it received the information from the science officer, and she quickly programmed in the approximate location to the GPS. The Petty Officer moved towards the edge of the clearing one more, and again the buzzing in her mind got louder. Hopefully she'd be able to figure out the cause soon. | Jungle Clearing || lt. cmdr. Sven Aune | Crewman Alice Duff|Alice brushed a curl out of her face and hitched a phaser rifle over her shoulder. She gave a weak smile to the boisterous petty officer. She felt slightly relieved that she hadn't been asked to take point. Though she had training in range combat, she was still pretty green. She replied to Isaiah with an "Aye." and though she worked with Sven quite a bit, she didn't really find much humor in that joke. Perhaps if it was up on the station. But not today At least the really cut Dr. Hunt was with them. She glanced at the man then averted her just as quickly. So mysterious. So dark. She felt even more drawn to that. She closed the distance. "So, uh doc, how long have you been in the fleet for?" she asked trying to make light conversation. Soft tags away team [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Jungle, Unknown Planet] Isaiah moved along through the jungle following Jovireh's lead. As she navigated the team through the brush, he took advantage of the opportunity to continue to take readings on their surroundings. Nothing stood out as overtly anomalous from what he could tell. He only made brief scans and captured a few images with the use of the tricorder. He made note of several samples he'd collect on the way back, but for now, the priority was to make it to the food source and to check on the water supply. Once that was done, he'd quench his own curiosities. He did overhear some of the exchange between Hunt and Duff, especially the mention of his length of service. Dr. Hunt was quite a scientific curiosity in his own right. To be able to span different eras of the Federation wasn't typical for many humans. And while it presented itself with the promise of longevity, he had to imagine that it came at quite a price, knowing that you'd left so many of the people you cared about behind. "It looks like the fruit we're looking for is just up ahead," he called out. Thus far, it seemed that Velal hadn't detected anything dangerous, which for once was a good sign. Hopefully, their good fortune would continue, and they'd be able to find a way to safely get back aboard the Mac.

She came up next to the doctor with a bit of a skip in her step, not at all perturbed by the age. "Oh, I don't technically serve on the Mac. I mean, not at this moment. I'm part of the Front Ears security detail. Svenny decided to drag me along on this little expedition. Cross training, yadda yadda yadda something bureaucratic blah blah blah. I mostly do patrols about the station, peace keeping. Help find the occasional stray house plant, and more and more, paper work. And geesh, there is a lot of that."Mr. Scientist spoke about the fruit. She had no idea what his fixation on that was, but scientist were an eccentric group, best left to their own devices, until they create planet destroying kaijus and homicidal superhumans. But Hunt surprised her even further. He was going to climb the tree! He was like what, at least 70 years old now, doesn't look a day over 32 and fit enough to scale trees. Well, she was going to ask him out on a rock climbing date! But that would come a bit later. Right now she decided to wait and watch. Tags Jonathan Hunt Isaiah Quinn

[Jungle Clearing - Unknown Planet] Without knowing what this swirling and ever moving black mass was. Thea wasn't going to take any chances, her thoughts briefly turning to Isaiah and the others and whether they had encountered anything similar. Yet something nagged at the back of her mind that the sudden arrival of potential trouble wasn't a coincidence. However without proof they just had to find the best way to deal with and understand it. Aware of Sven raising and preparing his phaser rifle as per her orders. Thea kept her focus on the whatever it was, until she glanced towards Aravis who had managed to grab one of the tricorders that Sven had told them about. Listening as the flight officer informed them that they were dealing with a lot of tiny creatures and not just one weird sea of black. Not exactly comforting but at least they had some idea of what they were now dealing with. Aravis's suggestion of putting their weapons on wide dispersal and on continuous fire certainly had some merit, before the Lieutenant realised that she no longer had a weapon. " If there isn't a spare in the supply container then get behind us Lieutenant" she replied as she readjusted her phaser. " Chief, begin firing as Aravis suggested, Lieutenant keep an eye on those readings and see what happens to them as we fire".Then Thea raised her phaser once more and began to fire.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Unknown Planet - Jungle]Hearing the doctor offer to climb a tree, Jovireh risked a glance upward at the thick canopy of branches above them. "You'd probably have to climb pretty high to be able to see anything..." She didn't think it was the best idea, since they still didn't know the friendliness of any birds he might come across. Not to mention the potential of falling... But she kept that opinion to herself. Her tricorder beeped, and she glanced down at the reading. "We're close..." the Petty Officer announced, slowly approaching the thick wall of vines that crossed between two trees. Reaching out, she carefully began to move the vines, surprised by how easily they fell away with just a gentle tug. Just a few meters ahead there was a large thicket, and even from here she could see the berries amongst the bramble. Another glance at her tricorder verified they were the edible kind they'd been searching for. "And there they are. At least one kind. It looks like there's more - as well as a fresh water source - on the other side. Not sure how we'll get over there though." Walking over to the thicket, she reached for one of the berries to give to Isaiah as a sample, but the moment her fingers brushed the fruit the bramble vine constricted tightly around her wrist. "Faelirh ch'susse-thrai!" She swore loudly, yanking her arm back. The thorns tore at her flesh, but broke away, and she eyed the thicket cautiously as she took a step back. "Never seen an auto defense system like that for a plant..." she murmured quietly, realizing she'd need to be a lot more careful about what she touched. Her wrist bore a circle of lacerations like a green bracelet, though none too deep to concern her. She didn't notice the way the soil absorbed her blood the moment it dripped onto the ground.
Meanwhile... The sentries marched onward through the clearing, making surprisingly rapid progress for their size, and heading straight for the intruders. The wide beam phaser fire met the start of them, and the entire mass froze momentarily. Then it shifted, fluidly like rippling water, and broke apart down the center. The now two lines changed direction, moving around the stunned section that had been at the front, and marching to either side of the group.
The dull buzzing in her head suddenly turned to a shrill shrieking, and Jovireh cringed, her fingertips pressing against her temple. Thankfully it only lasted a moment, and was replaced once more by the buzzing. What the hell was that?

She crouched again, this time taking her eyes off the mass to hurry her search for a phaser. Thankfully, there was one in the box. Aravis quickly changed the settings and took a shot at the side of the mass closest to her, then biting her lip, she turned and stared at the suspended runabout. She had the feeling it would be the only safe place in the vicinity. She knew she'd probably get reprimanded later, but decided to take the initiative. Aravis changed her phaser's settings to a narrow beam and disintegration and took careful aim at the large branch that was keeping the runabout aloft. ' Commanders, get ready to run!' she yelled, then fired. At first, there was just a slight groan and some small cracking sounds as a few smaller branches broke under the weight of the vessel, then the runabout fell. Thankfully, it fell almost straight down, dropping level as it thundered to the ground, the open doorway facing their direction. Aravis took her own advice and sprinted, stumbling slightly as she tried to reset her phaser so that she could provide cover fire for the others when she reached the protection of the runabout. ---------- Tag Thea Baker, Sven Aune, Jovireh Velal

[Jungle - Location] Hunt listened to the reaction during the walk that he was in the service for 52 years. She thought that he knew everything about Starfleet. The opposite was true. In reality, it was one of his first missions, and he tried to play hero, and this was his reward. He smiled as he looked down to the ground. “ Technically, I did not age fifty of those years, and the world today is completely different than the one I left.” He said with a smile. He heard about the paperwork, and he tried to make a joke “A hh, the ever-eternal battle of paperwork and desk work. Sometimes it feels that Starfleet makes up-regulation and reporting duties to keep us busy. Apparently, being listed as MIA and presumed dead is a popular tax dodge these days and requires a lot of paperwork to clear it. I even had to go in front of a judge to tell him I was alive.” Even though the statement was ridiculous, he thought it was a little funny despite their current situation. “I am sure every experience has its positives. Besides, he joined Starfleet to explore strange new worlds and seek out new civilizations. I am sure this is going to be a unique experience. It has already been hopefully the crash the worst of it”. The Doctor commented with a smile and being an optimist. In medicine, having positive thoughts could go a long way. It did not take long in which he observed the Petty Officer almost being dragged by almost a plant-like. She had some issues, but it was a relatively small fight. Hunt took out his Medical Tricorder and mentioned, “Not necessarily a self-defense, maybe like a Venus Fly Trap and maybe we have their food” Hunt commented as he theorized that having the plant as self-defense might mean that they are sentient in which the protocols would be different. “ You’re cut, Petty Officer,” Hunt observed. He approached her and took his Medical Tricorder. “ Would you let me scan and disinfect your wounds?” He asked politely. He could have ordered her as the Doctor or began the scan and treatment, but if there were time and the ability, he would rather deal with everything with as much consent as possible. “ I just want to scan to see if there are microbes; better be safe than sorry, Petty Officer.” Dr. Hunt said.

[Jungle Clearing - Unknown Planet] Firing her phaser at the oncoming mass had seemed the most logical thing to do, considering all factors and a sense of not ending up injured or dead. Regardless of her initial orders and the suggestions made, it appeared as though the creatures weren't giving up on reaching them. Even those that they had succeeded in stunning were cast aside as more of them moved forward and split in order to surround the trio, which definitely bode well for any of them. Although she was glad that Aravis had found a phaser, there was a moment of confusion as the flight officer fired at the runabout. Which was quickly replaced by one of appreciation as Thea realised what she was doing. Not that it stopped Thea from firing as she acknowledged the warning to get ready to run. " Good thinking and then we can warn the others" she called back as the runabout dropped to the ground with a thud. Relief washed through the XO as she kept her phaser steady and followed Aravis. Seeing her stumble slightly, Thea was keen to check on her as they rushed towards the runabout. " Are you okay Lieutenant?" she asked as safety loomed before them.

{Quoted Posts} [Jungle – Unknown Planet] Hunt continues his walk in the humid environment of the jungle. “ Seeing the amount of vegetation in the area, it stands for the reason that Rainfall and water will be close to the fruit as well.” He stopped for a second and asked, “Commander, I was thinking of climbing one of the trees. It will also give them an idea if there are cliff, mountains, or valleys nearby.” |Jungle - Unknown Planet || Crewman Alice Duff |"52 years! Wow! You must really know the ins and outs of Starfleet by now." she was impressed, and a man of that age. He was in damn fine condition. Prime example of a human. If he was a human. Alice knew that there were other human looking species that weren't human and had vast life spans. The Al-something-and-anothers....Whatever they were.
The dull buzzing in her head suddenly turned to a shrill shrieking, and Jovireh cringed, her fingertips pressing against her temple. Thankfully it only lasted a moment, and was replaced once more by the buzzing. What the hell was that? [Jungle - Location] Hunt listened to the reaction during the walk that he was in the service for 52 years. She thought that he knew everything about Starfleet. The opposite was true. [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Jungle, Unknown Planet] As they moved along the Jungle floor, Isaiah was constantly filled with a state of wonder. Eco-science wasn't exactly a passion of his, but being exposed to what an alien world had to offer for the first time had a level of assignment that no scientist could deny. He heard Dr. Hunt's initial offer to climb trees to get a better view of the terrain. Petty Officer Velal was the first to respond, suggesting that it'd be a high climb before he got a decent look of anything. "I'm with the Petty Officer on this one," Isaiah answered. "While an aerial view would be ideal, I think we're okay to hold off for now. Besides, I would prefer to avoid any of us trying to practice triage medicine should one of our doctors get injured from a fall." He was pretty certain that was the last thing he wanted to explain to Thea. Quinn continued to catch tidbits of the exchange between Hunt and Duff. The man's childhood was truly another era. In a number of ways, Quinn was curious how he had adjusted to the passage of time. Clearly, Starfleet was satisfied with how he had adjusted to allow him to continue serving actively. Perhaps, it was a topic best broached over the drink the doctor had suggested earlier. Jovireh then mentioned that they had arrived. Isaiah looked at the berries with a slight smile. He started to slip off his pack to get a container, but his attention was quickly captured at Velal's curse. He didn't speak Romulan, but he knew a swear when he heard one. She managed to free herself of the bramble rather easily, but this was certainly something they hadn't expected. "Are you okay?" he asked, even as she quipped about the plant's automated defense system. Of course he had observed a slight cringe as well. "Did you... sense something?" It could have just been her reacting out of pain, but perhaps it should be something they consider more closely. Quinn immediately took out his tricorder, and began scanning. His primary attention at the time was on the plant that had the berries, though he was also looking for anything that met their typical requirements for sentience in their immediate vicinity. "Make sure Dr. Hunt takes a look a that," Quinn advised. "It could have just reacted like a Venus Fly Trap," Isaiah stated. "Of course, that would suggest that the plant interpreted you as much of a meal as we have its berries." He then began to scan for faunal remains... just incase this plant did have a predatory nature.

[Unknown Planet - Runabout Roundabout]
It’d been remarkably easy to give the organics the slip and make her way back into the runabout. It definitely helped that they’d been more preoccupied with their own survival than Carlisle's own sudden appearance. The clearing was a veritable hive of activity, a sort of organized chaos and she used it to her advantage to disappear. The hardest part had been the acrobatics to get back into the suspended craft, but that hadn’t been much of a hindrance for someone of her considerable talents.
The runabout was in a sorry state, but for some small miracle, seemed more or less structurally sound. Her main concern was the warp core. Although much smaller than a starship's core, if it breached, they'd all be done for. Making sure it was stable was just looking out for her own best interest, she reasoned. Certainly not out of any undue worry for the organics.
Figuratively and literally rolling up her sleeves, she tied her red hair back in a high ponytail and set to work accessing the main console. It was fairly undamaged and emergency auxiliary power was already up and running. It was a good sign, but she wasn't going to try and jynx things just yet. Interfacing with craft's systems was easier than riding a bike and soon she was running the diagnostics programs like a professional. Given her programming, she was supposed to be anyways although she was unable to connect to her advanced engineering module back on the station. Basics and the runabout's own troubleshooting program would have to be enough. It was like having part of your brain just out of reach when you needed it most.
Carlisle let out a soft growl of frustration that echoed through the empty craft, reverberating through the sound system. Weird, but that was probably an effect of being interfaced. Readings from the warp core were coming back, and it seemed to be stable, but would probably need to be accessed via the jefferies tube for visual confirmation. That was where things got a bit iffy, she didn't relish the thought of being trapped in there with a malfunctioning core if things went South. Well… further South.
As if in correlation to her direct thoughts, the runabout began to lurch downward. With barely enough time to brace herself, the craft fell from its precarious perch in the trees, Carlisle could only think sarcastically to herself, "When the bough breaks." The sound of the crash was loud, but nothing compared to the alarms that lit up the console like an angry Christmas tree wired directly into her brain. Grimacing, her hands flew over the controls inhumanly fast, trying to at least silence some of them so she could hear herself think.
The runabout had not enjoyed that drop, but the warp core was still reading green. Another small miracle. Tearing herself away from the console, she ran to the runabout's open door to see several Starfleet officers firing phasers at some decidedly unnatural looking . . . Thing? Things?!
"What the dang hell is that? How did y'all manage to piss off Mother Nature that quickly?" The exclamation was more to herself than anyone else. She stood in the doorway gobsmacked for a moment, before turning on her heel and returning to the interior. Runabouts were usually fairly well armed, time to see if this one still had some working teeth.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Unknown Planet - Jungle]The brief moment of mental pain had been more than enough to distract her from the physical pain, and she was about to turn down the doctor's request to treat the cuts when Quinn essentially ordered her to let him. So without argument, she lifted her hand to give Hunt access, turning to Isaiah to answer his other question. "I'm fine... but the longer we're out here, the more I become convinced we're not alone." Jovireh still couldn't explain exactly what she'd been feeling, but after what she'd just heard, it was the only thing that made sense. "It feels like the constant presence of another telepath in my mind... But instead of thoughts, I just hear static. Psionic white noise, essentially." That wasn't helpful, she knew, but it was the best she had right now. Her attention was caught by a movent in the brambles, and she looked over to see a wasp-like creature emerge, hovering closer and closer to her outstretched hand. "Let me guess, that thinks I'm food, too?" she asked, paling slightly at the thought, her brown eyes fixed on the flying insect. Remembering her survival training on Earth, she tried not to make any sudden movements, but hoped that the doctor would hurry up with whatever he wanted to do to her wrist so they could get away from this particular part of the jungle. It didn't seem to like her very much. Or maybe it liked her a little too much...

Meanwhile... The blasts from the phasers continued to stun their marks, but as each section of the mass fell still, those behind it parted like the human proverbial Red Sea and moved around the fallen, continuing in a steady, unfaltering march towards the Fleeters.

Tag Thea Baker Sven Aune Ozu Saya (Aravis) Carlisle [ Lt. jg Aravis - Unknown Planet - Jungle Clearing] Aravis' eyes widened in horror as the mass split and started moving as if to flank them. ---------- Tag Thea Baker , Sven Aune , Jovireh Velal [Jungle Clearing - Unknown Planet] Firing her phaser at the oncoming mass had seemed the most logical thing to do, considering all factors and a sense of not ending up injured or dead.
Tag Sven Aune Ozu Saya [Unknown Planet - Runabout Roundabout] It’d been remarkably easy to give the organics the slip and make her way back into the runabout. Sven Aune |The mass of bug-critter things seemed to move as if they were of one mind. Not good, Sven thought. They swarmed around the phaser fire that the XO had fired. A moment later the pilot had done the same thing, except she too exception to the tree. The runabout hung suspended in the sky in precisely the same way that bricks do a moment later the huge ship thudded to the ground. The next thing he knew the pilot had issued an order to run, but she was hanging back? That would not do. As chief of security, it was his duty to make sure that everyone else made it on board, and if he didn't make it.... That was part of the job. "That's one way to get it down." He hoisted up his rifle, "I ain't leaving you behind." he said as he sided up next to Aravis and provided a means for her to lean upon him as they made their way back to the craft. "Those things move as if they are of one mind. And it appears that phaser fire does very little to stop them." Tags Thea BakerOzu Saya[ Lt. jg Aravis - Unknown Planet - Runabout] ' I'm okay, I'm okay,' Aravis insisted as she turned to fire again at the moving mass and waved off the giant security officer's help. She turned to take the last few steps through the door of the runabout, stumbling to a halt at the sight of the red-haired civilian woman that Aravis most assuredly did not remember being aboard when they'd left the ship. She'd double-checked the crew manifest before they'd departed. Shaking herself, Aravis turned to the door and fired through it a couple more times, calling out, ' We've got to get this shut!
And hope like hell that they can't eat through metal,' she muttered. ---------- Tag Thea Baker, Sven Aune, Carlisle, Jovireh Velal
