"Is that all it'd take?" she asked. She then moved to make certain she was standing in front of Shavan, her hand resting on his shoulder as she moved closer, the distance between them disappearing. "And to think I was expecting an actual challenge."

{Quoted Posts} [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia - Colony Gym Locker Room]Riyo had woken up in far more pain than he had been in for a very long time. A migraine filled his skull, a throbbing in the center of his back that only got worse when he moved, cheekbone and jaw bruised and swollen, and his right hand... Well, the fact that he was incapable of flexing his fingers told him he really didn't want to look at it. The memory of how he had gotten in such a shape came through the grogginess, and he groaned. He was going to be in a lot of trouble, with both the Captain and Leanna. And he had no idea how he would even start explaining his actions to either of them. Hearing a familiar voice not far from him, Riyo opened his eyes and cringed against the bright light above him. With another groan - this time of pain - he slowly forced himself into a sitting position, realizing for the first time he'd been laying on a bench next to a row of lockers. Whether or not it was better than the floor remained to be seen. Turning towards the speaker, he swallowed when he saw the Captain, guilt and shame flooding through him. Did he look as bad as he felt? No charges were being pressed... That meant he hadn't killed the guard. Good. He wasn't sure he'd be able to handle a third man's blood on his hands, Cardassian or not. When the Captain declared he'd be going to the infirmary and assisting any who needed help, he nodded weakly. Hopefully Rif was still there to patch up his hand first... Though she was addressing everyone in the room, he knew he was the only Starfleet officer present. Sure enough, he heard the Vedek reply with accusations and demands, without actually answering the question. So with a deep breath, he finally spoke, his voice hoarse and cracking. "The Gul was trying to investigate the murder, without listening to anyone who said Starfleet was already handling it. Vedek Dima told him to leave, as he was unnecessarily interrupting the ceremony. The argument got pretty heated pretty fast. Fellin and I tried to diffuse it, but neither were listening. When it got physical, I tried to break them up... But one of the Gul's guards grabbed me." He pause, gaze dropping to the floor in obvious shame, his voice quieter as he continued. "I lost it."Prophets, what was he going to tell Lea? [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Locker Room, "Jungle" Gym]Judy carefully refrained from rolling her eyes at the Vedek. He was so painfully full of himself, almost like a Cardassian. However, she had her own officer, offering a much more helpful, and shaken, perspective. "Thank you, Lieutenant; we'll speak later. Just get that hand taken care of, quickly," she acknowledged. Then, she focused back on the Vedek. "Gul Du Toollamé is nominally a diplomat, so I can't kick him off the planet, but I will see to it that he stays out of your way. Next time, it'll only be the Cardassians getting stunned - and they've been made aware of that."With a steely glare piercing through her bifocals, Judy clearly meant business. With this commitment, she was already risking a diplomatic incident. "Like it or not, the Federation is still pretending to be Cardassia's friend, and they ours."Far from the mystique of unchecked power, the captaincy was a middle-management office, still hemmed in by directives from above. [ Apazi Fellin, Vedek Dima Emmari | Locker room, Fellin exit ] Fellin felt for Riyo to have to answer to Starfleet for his response to the Cardassians. Fellin, Dima Emmari, and many other Bajorans shared a similar view, that even while Bajor was part of the Federation that they must reckon with their past with the Cardassians on their own. Fellin approached and laid a hand on the back of his shoulder. "I don't blame you." Then Fellin fell apace with Riyo. "Can I come along? If I'm not careful, I'm going to end up involved again. I forgot I am retired." Vedek Dima watched them go, left for the moment alone with the captain. He picked up the shedded trappings of his vocation. Without an audience, his hard edges were blunted, just a little. "You can do nothing. I understand. You know..." Never one to miss an opportunity to share his opinion. "... 'shoot first, ask questions later', I don't think I like that song. Where did you learn it?" Dima for Judith Eastman , exit Fellin with Riyo Jovireh Velal

[Eta Borir - Kerelia Colony] Eta barely noticed the time passing. She listened to Syl as she described the events, nodding affirmatively at some points. Sometimes, she would check in, but didn't elaborate on anything the woman wasn't willing to tell. Finally, she too raised her head. "Low tide," she croaked.
When Syl remarked that she should go back to the plaza, Eta nodded, and to the invitation to go with her, the Cardassian responded with a grin. "I will go with you," she said, and stood up.

[ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]=A= "Captain, this is Lieutenant Niles, and you're not going to like this. The transactions to our suspect all come in some way, shape or form from Gul du Toolame. I've sent the relevant evidence to your PADD. 'shoot first, ask questions later', I don't think I like that song. Where did you learn it?" [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - "Jungle" Gym -> en route to the Ops Center]Judy sighed deeply. "Unfortunately, the personnel we had here at that time were the colony's regular contingent, who usually deal with wild animals, not sentient people. They acted as they did because they didn't have the training and experience to do better," she explained. "We have brought in our regulars, the ones who work the promenade, so that will not happen again. We'd simply not expected Cardassians to show up."Before she could continue explaining, her combadge went off. =A= "Acknowledged, Lieutenant; I'll go make the arrest. Thank you." =A= After being scolded for so many missteps, Judy was confident that Josh wasn't being a nincompoop this time (it helped that Jenkins didn't butt in to contradict him), and she rather wanted to put Du Toollamé in his place (though she'd never admit it), so she chose to act, and just as a nice jiu-jitsu move, lull the most probable other suspect into a sense of confidence. "This is something you'd like to see, Vedek. Come with me."With the swift gait of a Manhattan native, she led towards the Ops center, with her target being the first floor's Oceanside conference room.

[ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]Well, that had been easy. Easier than he had expected, actually, for Ito Eka had wasted very little time spilling her guts right then and there and confessed to her hacking into Warp Age Designs' computers, which was a criminal offence to begin with on top of no doubt being in contravention of corporate rules, and to be an accomplice to murder. But, she was also quick to point towards an actual killer, who may or may not exist. A 'man in black' whose 'face she never saw' was, well, a little convenient a story but it was also worth looking into. But what came next, well, that was the information he had been keeping in reserve and as she spoke he tapped at his terminal to look at the payments, their sum, and finding their origins, and it took all of his efforts to keep his face blank. For she was telling the truth. The money had come from Gul du Toolame all right, enough to wipe out all of her debts, gambling or otherwise, plus an additional very generous payment in Cardassian currency. With a furious flurry of his fingers, Niles highlighted the most relevant, and incriminating information and forwarded it directly to the Captain's PADD. With a foreign diplomat now involved, this was the kind of thing that needed to be addressed in the immediate. And at a higher level than himself. If anything, he knew the Old Lady wouldn't be one to feed a subordinate to the wolves to save herself from a complicated situation, and he loved her for it. But this, this had to be handled by someone who had far more effective diplomatic judo than he possessed; especially when concepts like 'diplomatic immunity' could be bandied about. =A= "Captain, this is Lieutenant Niles, and you're not going to like this. The transactions to our suspect all come in some way, shape or form from Gul du Toolame. I've sent the relevant evidence to your PADD. She claims there is another party involved in the murder, I will advise when I know more."=A= The interruption in the interrogation, not even excusing himself to place that call, was part of what he considered his tactical approach. Of course, she was being cooperative, but he was not about to turn into her best buddy right now, now when he had received her coldly and with but a minimum of courtesy thus far; she would have to earn that, and for that he had to maintain his current approach. "Now, Miss Ito, I am not the prosecutor or the judge in this case so it is not up to me what charges are laid and what sentence may be passed. But what is in my power is to indicate you have been cooperating and that may carry some weight with the courts."He let that last sentence hang in the air for some time, just to let it sink in. This was going pretty well, and now that she had made it clear she was terrified of jail time, he had a further lever to try and get answers out of her. "Now, you will tell me about this 'man in black' of yours. You say you never saw his face, but you will still tell me everything you know about him. What was his build? Tell me about his voice, how it sounded. Tell me how you were put in contact with him. Was he familiar with the site and its operations? Tell me everything you know or noticed about him."Now, hopefully she would do just that, and not use the dreaded single word that would put an end to his interrogation for the time being (which was being dutifully recorded): lawyer. [NPCs - PO2 Roland L. Jenkins & Ito Eka - Grandview Conference Room]Josh made one bad move, in admitting that his power was limited. "I'd like to cut a plea bargain," Eka announced. "I need a lawyer, or one of your JAG officers."More interesting perhaps was Captain Eastman's declaration. =A= "Jenkins to team O-1, keep Du Toollamé in the conference room, and prepare for an arrest once the Captain reaches you," =A= he instructed. =A= "Yes, sir." =A= He looked to Niles with a rare teasing glance. "Your friend Ms. Fox might want to see this. Maybe we do too."

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia - Colony Gym Locker Room ---> Infirmary]Riyo's stomach twisted as the Captain told him they would speak later. He wanted to tell her it wasn't necessary, that there was nothing she could say he wasn't already telling himself. But instead he just nodded meekly. "Yes, ma'am," he replied to getting his hand taken care of quickly. Pushing himself to his feet with a grunt, he looked over at the weathered touch on his shoulder and offered the other man a weak smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I think I could use the company." He still had a girlfriend to worry about, after all. The walk to the infirmary took a bit longer than it would have normally, his back spasming every few steps where he'd been stunned. All he really wanted was to spend the rest of the day laying in a hot bath, but that would have to wait. Stepping inside the sterile building he had already spent too much time in that morning, he cursed under his breath when he saw the time. Lea must be panicking... Momentarily forgetting his companion, and the orders to fix his hand immediately, he grabbed a message pad and logged in. It was a little difficult to type with his left hand, but he made it work. PR: I'm sorry. Colony security showed up and stunned everyone in the plaza. I just woke up a few minutes ago, and I'm in the infirmary now. Hopefully that would be enough to put her mind at ease until the Captain let him go back home. At least being here gave him a little more time to find the words to tell her what happened. [ Vedek Dima Emmari | Following Eastman to Ops ]Vedek Dima had every intention of proceeding with Ha'mara free of any expectation of the once-promised Starfleet support. He shouldered on his voluminous robe and made to quit the locker room with all its benches and cupboards. "Can nothing wait until we break our fast? Make it quick. The Prophets bid me to serve this Ha'mara." Judith Eastman

There was something uniquely Bajoran about what had just happened and Fellin knew he might be one of the only people Riyo would have nothing to justify. Leanna, perhaps, because she was Betazoid may be able to hear, but Fellin didn't believe a non-Bajoran could know. Tag Joshua Niles [ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]Well, the Old Lady, for a change, didn't seem to think he was doing something wrong when he fed her the information and that was a pleasant change of pace all right. At least, this investigation was coming to a close, thankfully. And hopefully that would be the one and only time he would have to play criminal investigator; give him him shipping patterns, piracy trends and ship disappearances to look into and he'll be one happy Tac officer. But have him deal with these things, that may as well be torture! And, well, it would seem that the magic word out of Ito Eka came out. Well, he may have revealed that his power was not endless with regards to this investigation, but he seemed to remember that it was never a good thing to promise more than could be guaranteed; he said he could put in a good word in his report, and given that so far everything had checked out he would be able to do just that. And with things being in motion at this point in time, he had to get moving himself. "No, Petty Officer Jenkins we are staying right here. But I am indeed certain that Miss Fox would be interested in this." Well, that kind of a tip was pushing the edge of what was acceptable, but given that a diplomat was about to be on the receiving end of a security detail and criminal charges that may or may not be waved off through diplomatic immunity? Having the press handy may be a good idea. And, once more, he tapped his commbadge. =A= "Charlie, this is Josh. Gul Toolame is being held in a conference room right now, and believe me you want to get there and be recording. This is going to make your day. Niles out."=A= With that message out, he returned his attention to the interrogation. Well, officially he could not compel her to answer any questions at this time, and she certainly had the right to clam up until a lawyer would be present. But he certainly could... nudge things a little. "PO, call to the station, request one of the JAG get on the next regularly scheduled flight here."That wording was actually very carefully chosen. Of course, access to a lawyer in a timely fashion was a right guaranteed by the Federation; but that didn't mean that one had to throw a wrench into a starbase's flight operations plan by scrambling to find an available shuttle and pilot and somehow not foul up the carefully tuned machine that was an ops plan. So, the next regularly scheduled flight was reasonable, and it would also mean time. "Miss Ito, the next regularly scheduled shuttle will not get here for a little over an hour. However, long before that the Gul will be in custody and will also be interrogated. He will know very quickly you fingered him, and odds are he will also be scrambling to make a deal. The only chance you have to truly be able to cut yourself a good one with the prosecution is if you can prove yourself to be a more valuable witness than he is, and provide us with actionable information and evidence before he spills the beans himself. Of course, you can wait for a lawyer to get here, but by then the Gul could have fed the Captain everything she could possibly want, and it will not be news, not nearly as valuable. You want to be the one to supply the initial lead, not the corroboration, and since our conversation is fully recorded and timestamped I have the means to prove that you are the one to provide us with what we need first. As I said, it is your right to wait until counsel arrives, but the choice is entirely yours."And, with that said, the Lieutenant rose from his chair and made for the coffee pot that had been thankfully brought in and most unhurriedly poured himself a cup and returned to his chair and leaned back once he sat back down. Now, he had to hope she would bite. And, truth be told, he wanted her to, if only from a purely selfish standpoint: he needed the win and to have the bit that would crack the case rather than be the one to find the supporting evidence. And if she bit, well, it would only be good for her, knowingly waiving her right to having counsel present in order to establish her good faith...

Perhaps it Shavan's scent... his proximity... his whispers , or the combination of all three playing a part in this game that was anything but innocent. Yet, it could have been Kova's own anticipation. After all, it had been a while. Still, there was a part of Kova that wondered if Shavan knew all the rules to this little game. He was only half Andorian, but this had always been a game rooted more on instinct than anything else. She could feel his lips, brush ever so lightly against hers. The warmth of his breath washing over her flesh. She gazed into his eyes, were much more was being said than the mere words they were exchanging. Her hand rose to the side of his gently caressing it, as she weighed her next actions. "I'll be gentle," was her only reply... or warning. Kova tried to gently move her fingertips along the contours of Shavan's face. Yet, with a motion so quick, her fingers lifted from the side of Shavan's face and moved quickly to slap the hybrid[fn] Andorian intimacy - 3rd paragraph under Culture & Tradition[/fn]. Kova barely spared a second, before her lips moved to close around Shavan's upper lip, initiating an impassioned kiss. Her hand, in the meanwhile, had gripped a handful of fabric on his torso to pull him closer.

[Paawin/Mazal Accommodation - Kerelia Colony] It may of only been a small glass of spring wine but it hadn't surprisingly taken Lea long to drain it. She knew that drinking wasn't the ideal way to deal with the way she was feeling right now but it had certainly taken the edge off a little. The hate and guilt that came with it, was still very much present. Something that could hopefully be vilified and calmed, once she had seen Riyo. Resisting the urge to pour another glass and to also throw it, Lea focused on making Ari a snack instead. Although when she found the little girl asleep on the sofa, Lea smiled and laid a blanket over her. There would be time for food later and if the kids had a late night, it wasn't a bad thing considering that they were on vacation. Leaving Ari to sleep and with Aven not stirring, Lea retreated back to the kitchen as her personal padd beeped to alert her to an incoming message. Seeing Riyo's name caused a mix of emotions at first until she read the message and didn't know what to make of it. She wanted to believe that he was sorry but to only send a message, did little to appease her anger. Three hours, three hours of nothing, to then tell her that he had gotten stunned by Security and that he was in the infirmary. Well what was she supposed to make of that, especially with security showing up and stunning everyone. Not to mention the fact, he couldn't come home when he was supposed to be on vacation. For a moment, she considered ignoring the message and not reply to him. But she relented slightly and responded with a simple sentence. There was no regret as she pressed send and then sat back, looking out of the slightly open sliding door, that led to the small yard and wished that things hadn't happened this way.

Tag Jovireh Velal [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia - Colony Infirmary]When Fellin offered to help with his hand, Riyo only paused for a brief moment before rummaging through a nearby drawer to retrieve a dermal regenerator. "If my face looks as bad as it feels, you can work on that." He told the older man as he handed him the instrument. He hadn't looked in the mirror yet, but the pain when he spoke and moved his eyes told of enough bruising and swelling that he didn't want the kids to see him like that. He was reaching for the osteoregenerator to fix his knuckles himself when the pad chimed. It only took a glance to read Let's response, and a combination of a sigh of defeat and frustrated growl rumbled from his chest. That was the coldest sentence she had ever said to him. He deserved it, and that made it so much worse. Reaching over with his left hand, he typed a quick response. PR: I'll be there as soon as the Captain lets me go. Tossing the pad onto the nearby desk, he awkwardly pulled himself up onto a biobed to give Fellin a better angle to work on the injuries to his face. His hands in his lap, he began to do his own part of the work. A few moments of silence passed before he spoke quietly. "This is the third time in my life I've broken my oath to do no harm." Granted, the first one happened before he had officially taken the oath... But that was just formalities to him. He'd already been practicing medicine for ten years before that. "It's starting to seem like no matter how hard I try to get better... Something is always going to happen to push me across the line." This was the first time it had ever happened out of anger... Before he had been providing his patients the mercy they begged for. But in a way, that made it worse. After all the therapy, the meditations, the emotional suppression... And he still lost control in the worst way possible. "Maybe it is time for me to resign."
