[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony Plaza]It had actually been a rather pleasant couple of hours, between the company and the alcohol. Syl had never had much of a tolerance to begin with, so she was feeling the pleasant tingling numbness of intoxication perhaps a bit more than the others. Too bad the wine wasn't stronger. Charlie had gone off in search of a story, and Kova and Shavan were watching the ritual from a different vantage point. Syl remained at the table, partially listening to the vedek over the crowd, but mainly watching the wine swirl in her glass as she twirled it. If only it really was so easy as to place a stone in water and walk away. Even before Caldonia, she would have needed more stones than she could hold in both hands, and it wasn't for lack of trying to let it go. The scars on her face, leg and now neck were visual representations of scars that ran much deeper. Scars that she knew would never fully heal. No matter how badly she wished it could be washed away in a basin of water. As she drained the rest of her glass in a single gulp, the sunlight passed over her face briefly, and the warmth of it was alluring. After so any hours laboring beneath the blistering Caldonian sun, she was surprised to not be immediately turned off by the brightness. But Kerelia's sun was soft, and gentle, and inviting. Perhaps she could find somewhere secluded to lay down, and let the sun cleanse her burdens while she slept. At least for a little while. Setting her glass down on the table, she stood and turned down the path that led away from the pavilion. She barely even swayed while she walked... A feat she was moderately proud of. The colony still mostly under construction, it didn't take her long to pass the last of the buildings, and she followed the direction the wind was coming from as it carried a hint of salt. She missed sitting on the beach... A gentle, rhythmic thudding soon caught her attention, and she stopped walking and turned to find the source. There was a Cardassian woman jogging along the path towards her. Syl tilted her head slightly in curiosity. She wasn't sure why the woman was here, but she definitely understood the awkwardness she must have been feeling being around while the ritual was taking place. Not to mention the murder earlier... Not really sure what she was doing herself, she lifted her hand in a brief wave as the woman got closer.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | The Unburdening ]Slowly, Bajorans and other guests began to move forward in improvised lines, like the paths water finds through the brush into a stream. There was no hurry. Some cradled their stones like an offering and others could not keep from rolling them over and over in their fingers. A small child - too small to have need of the ceremony - gleefully followed her father with her own pebble, eager to learn what all the adults knew. One by one, they took a turn placing the rocks in the wide shallow basin. Two ranjen monks blessed each one, offering prayers to the Prophets on the behalf of each participant. Somewhere, someone began to play and old Bajoran song. Vedek Dima had stepped back a few paces to, apparently, reflect upon the endeavor, but he was joined by a human with bright eyes. [...] "Vedek Dima," she greeted as she approached, her hands automatically raising upward as if to show she was unarmed. "Charlie Fox, FNN. I was wondering if you might have a moment for me? That is, if I'm not disturbing you." She almost laughed at that rather uncharacteristic addition; Charlie didn't often give a flying fart who she was disturbing. Maybe the spirituality of proceedings was getting to her. Or maybe it was the springwine. An interview? Now? Dima turned to face her and give this brazenly inappropriate (yet intriguing) interruption his full attention. He scratched his eyebrow, then folded his hands under his ample robes. "I sent my disturbances to the river long ago, Charlie," he said. "Welcome to our Ha'mara." Charlie Fox

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia Colony - Plaza]Riyo advanced through the line with Lea at his side and the kids in the stroller. Ari, naturally, had plenty of questions... Questions he didn't know how to answer beyond telling her to listen to the Vedek's story, and that he would clarify any further questions she had when the ceremony was over. That was part of being a parent he wasn't sure how to prepare for... Answering questions honestly without frightening her by revealing the evil that existed in the galaxy. But this was his people's history - his history - and he wouldn't leave it entirely up to Leanna to explain it to her. When he finally reached the front of the line, he crouched before the basin and set the stones in the water amongst the others one at a time, visualizing each face in the order they had crossed his path. Nodding a thanks to the ranjen monks as they prayed for him, he rose and stepped aside to wait patiently for Lea. It was touching that she had felt compelled to take part instead of simply observing, and he would find a way to express to her how much it meant to him. Later, though, when his mind was a bit more clear.

[Plaza - Kerelia Colony] It didn't take them very long once the line began to move towards the basement and even Ari who naturally showed her curious side with rapid fire questions, followed Riyo's instructions by listening. It wasn't always easy when it came to answering potentially awkward questions or being a parent for that matter but Riyo had handled it well. Lea also appreciated how he didn't leave it all to her, unlike other non mentionable people who used to be in her life. He was the reason why she had a stone in her hand and why she wanted to free herself completely from those memories. She also knew how her taking part meant to Riyo even if he couldn't express it right now, not that he needed to. So as he took his turn, Lea waited allowing the moment and its significance to be absorbed, especially when it was her turn to step forward. Smiling softly at Riyo before she moved into position and placed the stone in the water. The prayer from the monks and the feeling of complete freedom brought about a change in Leanna, knowing that was an experience to be honoured and cherished. When she returned to Riyo, she leaned in and kissed him softly. Now she could focus properly on their future as she noticed Rimi and some of the others who were taking part.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | The Unburdening ][...] An interview? Now? Dima turned to face her and give this brazenly inappropriate (yet intriguing) interruption his full attention. He scratched his eyebrow, then folded his hands under his ample robes. "I sent my disturbances to the river long ago, Charlie," he said. "Welcome to our Ha'mara." [Charlie Fox - Ha'mara Pavillion, LZ-2]"Well, thanks for having me," Charlie responded after a brief pause, taking a moment to consider the unexpected reaction the Vedek had to her presence. She was sometimes ignored, sometimes ridiculed, at times tolerated but rarely welcomed. "It's lovely." There was a peace, a contentedness in the plaza that Charlie felt she'd be able to taste if she kept her tongue from wagging for a second. "That's a rather powerful river of yours, Vedek Dima, if it was capable of taking away disturbances that have yet to happen." Alas, the tongue wanted to wag. Her eyes followed the movements of the people as they deposited their stones, which were then in turn blessed by more holy people in robes. She'd been surprised by the man's use of her birth name; most people called her Ms. Fox, and usually with disdain in their tones. Well, most people being Fleet. She supposed the Vedek and his ilk were far from being Fleet. "Like what happened this morning, how would you classify that, Vedek Dima?" Was that to be viewed as something other than a disturbance? At this stage she felt like she was just trying to poke someone who could be a bear.

[The Sky]In the town square, those near the pavilion would see a Cardassian shuttle flying low overhead, towards the colony's shuttleport.
[ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]The information at hand with regards to the investigation was sparse, and the connections, the ones that could be proven, were scarce. There were leads, and a lot of conjecture, but no hard links as of yet. Though when the word came that he could withdraw from the investigation had come down, Niles was actually conflicted about it. He knew he'd already disappointed the Old Lady, though he wasn't entirely sure how he'd done it, and he had the very clear indication that if he'd taken the first runabout back to the station as he was able to, it would only make things worse. So, he had decided to stay, and saw to it that the proper tools of the trade would be sent down for him to at least be able to do his job. So when the Captain had convened everyone in the conference room he'd originally commandeered, he too was back in uniform, with a proper Starfleet-issue tricorder at his left hip, and a phaser at his right, with a portable terminal in front of him as well as a PADD, with his civilian clothes unceremoniously shoved into the small duffel bag his things had come in and dropped in a corner of the room, well out of the way. With all the hard information that had been gathered to this point before him, Niles was thinking about the architecture of the log-in processes. To him, that would be one of the key components of the investigation, even with the list of prime suspects having been reduced to fifteen people. "Captain, I can't get this out of my head. The security guarding administrative accounts is stupidly weak, especially in light of that tricorder that was tampered with to spoof the biometric match, and was seemingly activated by the victim. I say seemingly, all we know for certain is that someone using his credentials did it. Which could mean anything; someone using his console when he stepped away for a moment, his console having been compromised and remotely accessed while he was logged in, or having been made to do it under duress. Or, there is the possibility that someone with super-user privileges logged in as him using elevated credentials. And that also ties to why the Vedek has unfettered administrative access, and that until he can be spoken with I've uncovered absolutely nothing as to why he has it."Granted, Mister Keltner was far less abrasive than his sister, but thus far no one could be truly ruled out as a suspect. Especially not people with the access to erase their tracks within the system. But what made it all worse is that for every answer they got, two or more questions popped up. "Though in the meantime, we should comb through every record we can access; security, communications, computer log-ins, access, replicators, the laundry room, the gym, everything, and try to reconstruct everything our victim has been up so since... honestly I'm not really certain when we should start. But I'd say no less than twelve hours before he granted the Vedek access, and preferably for a good month prior." [NPC - Crewman Ezra Mora - Conference Room, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] As Ezra sat there, he couldn't help but think about Rimi. There was a part of him that wished he'd gone ahead and sent her back to the station. At least he knew that she'd be safe there and well out of harm's way. He could still see the spark of light that had been upon her face hours ago. She had been so excited to share everything she'd done. Of course, poking around an actual murder investigation wasn't something a teenaged girl should be doing. It wasn't that he thought she'd find any real danger, but he couldn't risk exposing her to such a possibility. It was possible he came down too hard on her, but Rimi hardly listened to anything else. The crewman engineer refocused his attention on the meeting, as the Captain went over the timeline that they had uncovered. It even seemed that their list of plausible suspects had shrunk. Perhaps they were well on their way to actually solving this mystery, but there was still a long way to go. Lieutenant Niles then spoke up, lending his expertise to the investigation. He pointed out that there had been a lot of holes, and was attempting to explain the approach he believed was the best way to proceed. He then mentioned that Vedek... the same one that Rimi had mentioned. She only hoped his daughter had listened to him and was staying away from him. "That vedek," Ezra began, "from what I've heard, he doesn't seem the least bit empathetic about the loss of life. Given the history between the Bajorans and Cardassians, it's understandable. However, he also comes off rather cavalier about the whole thing. I figure he's as good a place to start as any." Perhaps Ezra's opinion was fueled by the man's urge to protect his daughter, but he wasn't aware of anyone else that seemed to be as high a profile of a suspect. [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Grandview Conference Room]Judy clasped her hands behind her back, listening as her subordinates spoke in turn. "In my experience - and that's a lot of experience - the way to understand a crime is to understand the motive behind it," she stated somewhat philosophically, with a crack at her age woven in. "The why of the crime informs the how. In this case, the Vedek is a suspect, as you, Mr. Mora, pointed out, and he also knows many of our other suspects. I think we can start by, as you, Mr. Niles, suggested, combing through our vic's footsteps, while looking for other Bajorans. Then, we can use what we find out about them, to make an indirect run at him and see what gives," she suggested, before Jenkins popped up. "Captain, I'm getting a report from the station. Gul Du Toollame, the Cardassian special envoy for the region, is on final approach to the colony right now," he reported. "Well, that makes things a bit more complicated, doesn't it?" the Captain asked rhetorically. "I need a volunteer to go deal with the Gul. Someone who will try to help him, but just doesn't have the clearance to give him meaningful access."Du Toollame was a hybrid (half-Cardie, half-human of French descent), pro-Federation in his sympathies, and reform-minded. He was also in the worst possible place, at the worst possible time.

[Eta Borir - Colony Plaza, Kerelia]
Eta was a little taken aback when she registered the woman's slight wave and slowly moved towards her. The Cardassian responded to the gesture with her hand with a grin and briefly considered whether she should practise small talk again. "Is something wrong?" she asked curiously, and came a little closer again.
She briefly wondered why the human woman was not where the other Starfleet officers had marched. They were probably sitting in some conference room, discussing what they would do next - of course, without taking the customs of the Cardassians. All that mattered was that the holy Starfleet caught the murderer, regardless of whether the victim was dishonoured in the process. The murderer might kill other people, and we don't want that, do we? In any case, the inspection lamp on the halo of the Federation was flashing again.
But be that as it may, the activities of the other woman helped Eta not to rack her brains with this stupid speech.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony Perimeter]Syl smiled as the other woman returned her wave, though her head tilted slightly in curiosity at the question that followed. She supposed the Cardassian hadn't met many friendly faces that day. "Wrong? No, not at all. At least not anything new since this morning." She rambled through the last sentence, not wanting to give the impression she was pleased about the murder. "I am wonderfully intoxicated and wanted to get some fresh air." Okay, so maybe the explanation wasn't necessary, but she had always rambled a bit more than usual when under the influence. "Want to join me down on the shore?" She still had her com badge on; the others would be able to get ahold of her if they wanted to.

[Eta Borir - Colony, Kerelia] Eta kept the grin on her lips that some people had probably correctly identified as a sense of adventure. At the comment that the woman was intoxicated, the Cardassian only grinned more.
After a few seconds of time, during which Eta had strained both her bulges over her eyes (which she usually did to think), she nodded. "Sure, I could use a little distraction. Which way?"

{Spoiler} [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Ha'mara Pavilion, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] Kova could hear the words, but sincerely doubted that life's woes could be solved by dropping a rock into a basin of water. Hell, she'd spent a month tapping away at boulders on Caldonia. She was done with rocks. Of course, the metaphor was something that resonated with her. Perhaps ending her tenure with Starfleet was her own Unburdening. In many ways, pursuing Starfleet had always been what led her towards trouble. There had never been a time, if she was truly hones with herself, that she hadn't been in the fleet's shadow. Her eyes sought out her friends, and there was just a hint of fear that a true unburdening could mean letting some of them go as well. The Andorian recoiled at the notion. Syl and Shavan may still be in the fleet, but both of them were more than just their uniforms. She could be honest with herself about that. As much seemed obvious considering how supportive Syl and Charlie had been about her severing ties with the Fleet. Charlie had even suggested she continue consulting. It wasn't as if she hadn't done it before, but with no exclusivity. She already had somewhat of a reputation, and perhaps not being on Starfleet's payroll could open a few more doors. Her eyes searched the crowd. She could see several familiar faces. She could even see Charlie slipping into what looked like work-mode as she made her way towards the vedek. Kova tried to recall exactly how much spring wine Charlie had drunk. Either way, she didn't have the metabolism of an Andorian, which could make for an interesting interview. Her eyes then shifted towards Shavan, who seemed to be casually drinking his own springwine. She navigated a little closer, some of their earlier conversation still tapping at her thoughts. "How many pebbles would it take to unburden your soul? she asked. "I know for me it'd take more than that little basin there." There was a slight smile on her lips as she pushed a lock of her ivory hair behind her ear. "Perhaps a small pond would do."[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Plaza] Shavan glanced up as he sensed Kova’s presence beside him again, and gave an amused grin at her comment about not having enough pebbles, and the mental image of disrupting the ceremony with a whole avalanche of stones. “Oh, I don't know. Maybe a small moon’s worth would do.” He said it with a laugh, but part of him couldn't help thinking of what he could use unburdening from. Of course there was the recent memory of Caldonia, and all the anger and hurt that went along with it. And, deeper, everything from further back, before Starfleet; the troubled past that still haunted him, and the fear that no matter what he did to be better, he would never be able to fully let it go. Which he still hadn’t found the words to share with her, or anyone else here, but was starting to wish that he could. Kova Sh'qaleq

He was also in the worst possible place, at the worst possible time. [ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]Fifteen prime suspects. Fifteen of them with excellent reasons to hate the victim and want him dead. And the involvement with Starfleet Intelligence, which Niles had a chance to read upon in the intervening hours. There were some folk who reckoned it had been wrong to bring Cardassian scumbags into service rather than let them pay for their sins the hard way. But those motives were painfully obvious. Granted, life was not like a holonovel and sometimes the simplest explanation was accurate, but that seemed entirely too convenient to the Tactical Officer who'd been around so many complicated situations that even simple concepts like 'the sun rises in the east' needed corroboration these days... And now between the Captain and Mora's positions, he was starting to get his mind working. Something needed doing, maybe it would be stupid but... Word of the arriving Caradassian shuttle came down, and the Captain was the first to say just how problematic that could be. And the idea of working to stall him for as long as possible certainly had merit all right. "I think we should throw Miss Henriksen at the Gul. Has to be an officer to meet him, and I'd be really loath to get Lieutenant Th'zaar or Ensign O'Connell involved right now." While he only knew the Ensign by name and briefly meeting her on Caldonia, he knew the Andorian/Orion hybrid was a solid officer who could handle himself. And given they'd both survived The Pit, they both were as tough as they came... but if he was unsure of his own judgement with respect to this investigation, he was fairly certain neither was fully fit for return to full duty yet. And while it would mean surrendering the Captain's executive assistant's superlative skills at data-mining, she was probably the best one to stall the half-Cardassian. "But in the meantime, as Crewman Mora said, the Vedek seems to be really calm about this murder; that doesn't mean he did it, but I think we should talk to him sooner rather than later. And while it is... unworthy, I think that if he indeed had nothing to do with it, involved Bajorans might be loath to let a Vedek take the fall for their crimes, and it might make the actual perpetrator come out of the woodwork."

Then she paused, suddenly realizing she had no idea how sensitive a Cardassian's sense of smell was... and pointed in the direction that she had initially been walking. "It's that way." The human kept walking, following the path away from the partially built colony, leaving the festival and the murder behind without a care. "So, what brings you to Kerelia?" Syl asked her new companion, mainly for the sake of avoiding an awkward silence, but also partially curious considering what day it was.

[Eta Borir - Colony Perimeter, Kerelia] Eta took a deep breath and sucked in the salty air that seemed to come from somewhere. Still, it was good to have the woman pointing her in the right direction once again. "The festival of lights. Not exactly the most ingenious place, is it? The occupation has been over for ten years and the Bajorans are acting like resentful children. Is the solution to hate each other for decades, centuries, millennia to come? I don't think so. The Cardassians should adapt to the Bajorans and the Bajorans to the Cardassians. Is that so hard? Besides, Kerelia has a wonderful climate. Granted, the sun could be stronger and not as bright, but the warmth is better than on the station," she explained, wrestling a smile from herself. "And you?"

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony Perimeter]Whoa... Syl was definitely not drunk enough for that conversation. She was also too intoxicated to navigate away from it diplomatically. So instead, she blurted out the first thought that crossed her mind. "It's easy to move on, when you aren't the one who suffered." Okay, perhaps that was a bit cold, but Syl had found herself empathizing more with what the Bajorans had gone through during the Occupation during her time in The Pit under the boot of the Caldonians. Even though she had only endured it for a month, she couldn't fathom a time when she would no longer be angry over how the Kurjarian prisoners had always been, and would continue to be, treated there. Her tone of voice shifted to a more thoughtful tone as she continued. "Are you asking them to forgive? Or do you expect them to forget?" The difference between the two was something she had learned even before her recent capture. Contrary to popular belief... there could be peace without absolution. The path sloped downwards, and the shoreline became visible not too far ahead of them. She gave a small shrug when the initial question was turned back on herself. "I needed off the station. Felt like I was losing my mind in the silence." No, the station wasn't devoid of sound... but compared to the constant echoing of mining tools, shouting of guards and snoring of dozens of cellmates that she had gotten used to, it was quieter than she could handle.

[Eta Borir - Colony Perimeter, Kerelia]
Eta lost the grin from her face as soon as the woman uttered the first sound. "No one can forget that, and I'm not trying to justify what happened. But what else is Cardassia supposed to do? The last Bajoran has been taken out of the labour camps, Bajor has been rebuilt, maybe we should go and bury ourselves? Or move to the Delta Quadrant? Besides, the entire Union is not made up of war criminals" she replied, now looking relatively serious. She did not share the opinion that the occupation had helped Bajor, but had the certain patriotism that went so far as to watch her father's back. Even if he had been dead for a long time. When the woman began to speak, Eta squatted on the sand.
