[- Observation Lounge, Deck 11, Front Ear Station] Hunt listened to Jurgha as she insulted him. He reacted stoic and closing his eyes. He remained seated as listened to Candy as she wanted to give him but at least both of them wanted to hear how to fix it. He then listened to Eliska as wanted to mention that he was goofing off. “ I understand your perspective” He said Calmly. “ However, I can’t fix it by myself” He added. He leaned forward and said “ I wish, that prior to this. I would have been asked why I gave the answer that I did. However I understand there was no time”. Hunt then leaned forward. “ The question itself was a Paradox and would lead to two possible answers. I observed three clues given. The First Clue as the Judge introduced herself, she implied that we were not worthy of the prize. Meaning she prejudged the case. That is one of the highest violations of judicial ethics, such as Doctor to do no harm. The Second Clue, when she insulted Candy’s name. It showed personal issues with the team. Furthermore, it was upsetting that no one else defended her. If you remember she did not like that I defended her. Which, goes to the Third Clue, The Judge’s changed the wording to my question to make it into a Paradox. Both Candy and Eliska were asked for Contributions made to the team. The devil on this detail…is I was not asked for a Contribution but rather actions.” Hunt then placed the PADD with the instructions before departing. “The purpose or the spirit of the rules is that we all go and arrive together and we should be together the entire time. We do actions together. Therefore, by definition no single individual could have taken unilateral actions. So at the core the Judge’s question which might appear simple at face value leads to possible what ancient Earth used to call a catch-22. If I would have answered my contribution as unilateral actions such as I lead the team to Dr. Gates. It would have implied I did it as my authority as an officer. Instead of a team decision. However, it would have potentially disqualified us as the rules means we do everything together. We did everything by agreement. In order words my question was to take credit for something that the team did. Not a contribution. Alternatively, the way I answered was not to take credit but to place the team ahead of authority. Alternatively, either the Commander or the Judge realized or it was planned. Even if it was not planned, she should respect that it was not done to good off or jest but rather a though out answer and we can have academic discussions about this at a later time. Ultimately, the Commander is a Starfleet Officer, and the first duty of a Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. If the Commander believes that my personal truth is incorrect then she should determine that I am not fit to wear this uniform”. Hunt then took a deep breath as he hoped they would at least understand. “ Since, the issue targeted me. None of you at least asked me why or alternatively try to defend me. I could not explain the situation since there was a popcorn issue directly afterwards and once, we arrived here there was little time until you assumed it was in the incorrect answer. Now, we have three options the first one if that you all trust me and we submit this as our official response with all our signatures. In other words we protect each other. Second, Option you all vote and ask me to apologize for not being sensitive, for being a smart alec and pompous behavior. That you found by behavior to be unacceptable. Throw me under the Bus and I am ok with it. Third Option is to excommunicate me from the team as the test it’s over. My fate and the decision it’s in your hand.” Hunt finished as he calmly waited for his fate from his team. Tag Felicity Ellis Shavan Th'zhaar Eliska Bremmer

[ Jurgha, daughter of Khar - Observation Lounge] It seemed that she, Candy, and Eliska were actually all in agreement. She heard Candy say that they could still get new fixtures in their quarters, if they somehow resolved this. So Jurgha watched Hunt closely, allowing him the chance to come up with a solution. She also heard the invitation to free drinks in the Blue Beta, but whatever positive effect that had on her mood was canceled out as Hunt continued to talk. And talk, and talk. How much of their five minutes had that used up!? “Now you are just making excuses! Trying to worm your way out of this is not fixing the mistake.” Maybe that was it.. they needed to say what else they should have done. “Clearly your commander thinks you should have done something different. Just admit it so we can finish this!” If he did that, and they went with his 'second option', maybe they could still get their prize. Eliska Bremmer Felicity Ellis Jonathan Hunt

[Hot Candy - Observation Lounge]Candy tried not to zone out, she really did. She tried to focus on that fixture. Had there not been anything in it for her, she'd have just walked off, mid-speech. Or lecture, or whatever exercise in narcissism Johnny was engaging in. She looked longingly over at the other teams, who were celebrating their successes and promise of free drinks in the Beta. She felt very hard done by. And so, when he finally got to the business of outlining options, Candy returned her attention to the group and to the doctor. "Throw you under the bus!?" She asked, incredulously, losing some of her famed cool. "No no, honey, that's what you did to us. Ain't no fancy words or mental gymnastics gonna change that."Much as she wanted that revenge; Option 2 was probably the one that would get them thrown out. She addressed the others with this in mind. "The first option shows that we stand firm, with our weakest link, 'cause a team is only as strong as its weakest member, blah blah, etc., etc. It shows we're equally as -" She broke off for a second, about to say something less than kind, "Wrong, but that we're wrong together. The second option sees us turn on one; like wolves." She liked that imagery. She paused again for a moment to enjoy it, then moved on. "The third option is technically acceptable, like the Doctor says, the game is technically over and we already finished together. And like my grandaddy always said: You sometimes have to cut off one branch to ensure the health of the whole tree."Candy knew which one she'd prefer, but she'd go along with any option that got her the W.

She was on-duty herself, but there would be no harm in stopping by for a raktajino, take part in a little after-match analysis and answer any questions regarding their requests. She wouldn't stay long though; nobody could really let their hair down properly when Command was hanging around. Hearing the animated voices start up again from the other side of the room she decided it was time to go and deal with the A Team. "See you in a bit," she said in goodbye to the Valkyries, and began to move toward the huddled cluster of Hunt, Jurgha, Eliska and Candy. "Well, what do we think?" Felicity asked them, brow raised in curiosity.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]Syl listened as the Commander spoke with concern about how they had been cornered by the Bajoran men. For a moment she didn't know what to say. She hadn't stayed to talk to security because, well, she didn't think it would matter since the men hadn't actually hurt anyone. So often Starfleet security at the Academy had responded to calls over 'verbal altercations', only for a sweet smile and "everything's fine" to send them on their way without question. It hadn't occurred to her that things would be different on Front Ear. That would take some getting used to. "Yes, ma'am." Was all she managed to say in regard to both staying and giving her account to security, as well as receiving a fixture in her current quarters. That might be easier to think of what she wanted to add... Hearing Leanna's announcement of free drinks, she turned to her teammate with an appreciative smile. "I will definitely be taking you up on that." Though she was also definitely going to make a quick stop to change out of her uniform first. Her gaze shifted to Eliska's team... of which the women seemed to be clearly upset with the man - the doctor that had spoken to her earlier. While Syl had no idea what he had done, she almost felt sorry for him, pissing off those three. Almost. It looked like she may not be the one buying dinner after all... At least this time when Eliska came over, they wouldn't be sitting on the floor the entire time. It had taken a couple weeks, but her body had finally adjusted to the softness of the furniture again. She picked up the model of the Erudite that had been a clue, a small smile on her face as she examined it more closely. As she couldn't think of any reason why Felicity would need it back, she'd make sure to ask if she could keep it before they left. It would be a nice reminder of their escape, to counter all the reminders of their imprisonment. And she already knew just where to put it.

[ Cwm Eliska Bremmer - Observation Lounge, Deck 11, Front Ear Station ]And there he went. Again. While Hunt started on his diatribe, Eliska could not help but bring her fingers to her temples to massage an incipient headache. Was he going to accept any responsibility for antagonizing the judge after he was already warned? Whether or not she truly was a member of the bench or one of the Commander's merely mortal henchmen brought in for the purpose of the exercise didn't bloody matter! "Doc, that's enough hojnivo[fn]Manure, in Czech[/fn] to cover my family's fields three times over, and I have a big family." There was really no nice way to say this, just as both her teammates had done thus far. However, both had made good points in their statements, and now was the end of it... and really wasn't entirely on the team to fix this. Turn on him, it would be bad. Kick him out, it ought to be worse. There remained one thing. "Candy's right, a team's only ever as strong as the weakest member. That means the mission succeeds with the crew you have, or fails with the crew you have. But you know one thing I was taught? The concept of an after-action review. Where faults are pointed out, and ways to improve them come out. Sometimes it's formal, sometimes it isn't. But you know what else is part of being part of a team environment? Admitting that you've screwed up; you can't have a working team if you're not willing to hold yourself accountable either. Expecting you to step up isn't turning on you, it's expecting you to accept you were wrong. Same way I'd have to step up and own up if I'd gotten the team lost when going for the shortcuts."Now that she'd said her piece, the Commander made her way back to them, demanding an answer. "Well, Ma'am, I think it's up to the doc to decide which way we're going here."

[Valkyries - Observation Lounge] Leanna smiled when Flick told her that her offer of drinks had been a wonderful idea. However before she could say anything, her best friend's attention was needed with the team including Jurgha, Candy, Eliska and Doctor Hunt. Clearly from the raised voices and explanations that didn't seem satisfactory, their exercise hadn't gone that well either. " See you later" she replied quickly as Flick went over to deal with it. With Syl then accepting her offer and taking the miniature model of the shuttle as a keepsake. Leanna thought it was a great idea as she picked up the Starfleet figure. " I think that the kids will love this and I'll see you all at the bar".Still clutching the figure and deciding to go ahead in order to prepare for Syl and anyone else who wanted a drink. Lea then exited the Lounge and headed towards the Promenade.

[Observation Lounge, Deck 11, Front Ear Station] As he finished his explanation he waited to see what his team thought of the answers. It was clear by Jurgha's reaction that he wanted to apologize. Hunt responded in silence but merely nodded in that direction. He then listened to Candy as she gave a somewhat neutral approach as her goal was fixated on the prize. In fact, he guessed that most of the team cared more about the prize than the experience from it. He listened to Eliska who said it was his choice but obviously mentioned that it was his fault. “ All right, I will do what needs to be done. It appears that you all have made your positions perfectly clear. Thank you for listening to me.” He said with a lack of emotion. He took a couple of seconds and wrote a short message on a PADD. “ Now if you excuse me, and before I leave I am sorry for being a horrible teammate.” Hunt said He grabbed a PADD and headed towards the Commander. He handed the PADD to Commander Ellis and said “ Here you go, Commander. Here is a detailed report of my notes on the exercise. Additionally, here is a second Padd.” Hunt then handed over a second PADD. “ Here is my apology, for behaving in an inappropriate fashion. My teammates explained that I behaved in error and I agree with them. I should have answered the question better and should not have made the answer that I did. My answer appeared to not be done in the spirit or it was seen as offensive by either you or the Judge as affronting against your authority. As such, I cannot go back and change my actions but I can offer this” Hunt then added. “I am saying if my team gets any prize that may share or resources should be evenly redistributed among the rest of teammates as they should not deserve to be punished by my lack of judgment. If you do this, please do not tell the team, as it should be only me that deserves the punishment and I don’t want them to know about that. Additionally, if you request. I am willing to accept a demotion to Ensign no question asked. Additionally, I am sorry to you and for my team.” Hunt then said. As he was ready to accept his punishment, he hopes that the team would not get punished for his misbehavior. Tag Felicity Ellis Departing Shavan Th'zhaar Eliska Bremmer

[Felicity Ellis - Observation Lounge, Deck 11]Felicity waited for the A Team to produce their solution. What she did not expect was Jonathan Hunt throwing himself on a pyre, over a team-building exercise. But she stood, silently, as the man spoke and dutifully took one PADD, then another as he passed them, filled with a report he'd compiled himself, along with a written apology. Felicity was a decent poker player, and being her mother's daughter, had learned to keep the semi-regular turmoil within a secret from her facial expressions, but not even she could stop the look of pure surprise from dawning when he made mention of a demotion. "There's no need for such dramatic gestures, Doctor," she told him, believing she might have been amused if she hadn't been so bewildered to begin with. "My intention was to remove rank from this process, and ensure civilians and officers were on the same ground. If rank didn't factor at the beginning of the day, it's certainly not going to at the end." She found herself wondering if it was the crew's inability to separate themselves from their pips that was at the core of the issue between them and the non-Starfleet inhabitants they shared the station with. Next time, she'd make it clear that everyone was to arrive in their civvie attire, she decided. "I will pass on your apology to Maria, I think she deserves one." Maria Callas might not be a real judge, but she'd still done Felicity a favour, and deserved respect from the participants. The Commander shook her head then, and her hands wrapped around the PADDs. "As for your prize, as you've removed yourself from the exercise, so too will your prize be removed." It made no sense to share one fixture between an entire group; she really wasn't sure what the point of that was, aside from perhaps making himself feel better. All Felicity knew for sure was that so much of this could have been so easily avoided. "In future, Doctor, if you're going to fall on your sword, I suggest you do it for something a little more useful. Dismissed."Light blue eyes locked in a cool stare slid from the Lieutenant, and toward his former team. "Team A, congratulations. I'll expect your requests by end of day." A smile slowly returning, she turned to address the room at large for one last time. "Alright folks, that's a wrap! Leanna has invited everyone to the Beta for post-game analysis and a well-deserved break. Thank you for participating in the spirit the day was intended. I look forward to reading all of the weird and wonderful requests."At this stage, she'd rubber-stamp just about anything. "XO's log - supplemental.
Overall, I believe the teambuilding event was a success. The aim was to combine groups of individuals who would otherwise have little to no reason to work together, and see if they could finish out the day. The tasks were of less importance, but each team surprised me by not only following the rules, but embracing the spirit of competition. This may have been a product of the prizes available, and nothing to do with enjoying the spirit of comradery instead, but the end result was the same.
Despite unforeseen problems that each team had to overcome; a former enemy, believed responsible for a great injustice, two grieving victims of oppression, looking to take vengeance on anyone who resembles their old enemy, and someone choking on a popcorn kernel, everyone came through. I do believe that one or two may have made some decent connections as a result.
However, I'm not the blind optimist my mother believes me to be - quite the opposite, in fact. The likelihood of this mending any issues between our residents and our officers is slim to nil, the chasm that separates their perspectives remains vast, after all, but it's a first step.
Perhaps a good first step. Time will tell."
FIN.
