[Operations - Command Deck] Hearing Evoris and Bremmer working efficiently in front of her was very reassuring to Thea, not that she had any doubts when assigning the pair to work together. So far they had worked brilliantly, especially with the ideas they had shared and how those had formed their plan of action. Knowing that things were in hand, allowed the Doctor the time to look through the Sickbay data without rushing or overlooking anything. Giving her the opportunity to help those affected further and from what she was seeing, there was a definite pattern emerging. Agreeing with the prognosis so far, in regards to those who were unconscious and how their abilities had been compromised and essentially stripped from them. Thea then looked at those who were still awake, comparing between the two before realising that their paracortex was still functioning albeit in a weakened state. This gave her the answer or at least a place to start as they couldn't let those who were awake to fall asleep whilst at the same time finding some way to get the paracortex working again. In theory this should help them fight off whatever was causing this. However before she could share that with anyone, particularly Sickbay, her spine began to chill when they received a distress call. It was gutwrenching to hear and be witness too, especially when the person on the other end stopped speaking abruptly. Not needing confirmation to know that they had gone but did listen as Evoris did just that along with other important details. These shadows or whatever it was behind all of this, wasn't going to threaten her station any longer as she addressed those present. " Crewman, take a team to that location and see what you can find, especially any information on these shadows and keep me updated" she began, thinking that Eliska would want to be more hands on. " Ensign, continue with those scans but see if anyone else has reported seeing shadows, I've got a call to make to Sickbay".Thea knew rather than repeat herself that those in Ops would hear what she had to say and hopefully it would be the start of things turning in their favour. =/\= Baker to Sickbay, I've looked through the information that was sent and concur in regards to the paracortex being affected. Whilst it's currently dormant in those who are unconscious, it's weakened in those who are still awake. I recommend that we do all we can to stop them falling asleep and find some way to get the paracortex working again, for all of those affected =/\=For the moment she left out the part about the distress call until they had chance to investigate and had more information. Knowing it was vital to have all that so they could take the necessary steps.

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Sickbay]The voices around him faded from his awareness as he gripped Lea's hand, his eyes never leaving her as he searched his mind frantically for even the slightest feel of her. How could their link be gone without him feeling it happening? Floren's voice reached him, and Riyo obediently took a step back, reluctantly releasing her hand so the other doctor could move in. A moment later, what the other man had said actually registered in his mind, and his blue eyes snapped with shock and concern. "That's not possible! Scan her again!" It took all his willpower to remain where he was and not take over. Thankfully, Thea's voice over the intercom caught his attention, and he breathed a sigh of relief as they at least had some answers. =A="Acknowledged, Captain. Any ideas what might give that part of their brain a boost?"=A= Eager for the distraction, and the ability to actually do something, he stepped away from Lea's biobed (there's no way she's pregnant!) and began preparing stimulant injections for their two conscious patients. He could feel the plant in the corner watching him... as though it sensed the sudden change in the atmosphere of the room. As unnerving as it was, at least it knew to stay out of the way. Which was a very weird thing to think about a plant.

[PO1 Jovireh Velal - Dreamland - Ghost Ship]The taunts only angered her, and a sneer formed across her features. Of course she would find them, she had to! She knew this ship better than the back of her hand, and - She turned a corner to see her mother disappear behind a door. A door that had never been there before. Her pace slowed as she began to realize what was happening. This wasn't real. A word came to her mind, a distant memory of a story filled with fear and death. "Ssuaf-ha. Hwiiy aehallh...[fn]I understand. You are aehallh (Mythological nightmare creature)[/fn]" That meant she was dying. Well... she wasn't going to let it take her without a fight, and she certainly wasn't going to help it along. Jovireh stopped in the middle of the empty corridor, turning slowly as she searched for the creature once more.

[ Ensign Ic Arbrell & [NPC] Dr. Floren Rafa, civilian physician — Sickbay, Front Ear] Enola, not alone; he warmed to her touch, unable to distinguish her reticence without his Senses. Ic sat quietly in the pause between their words, observing the racing of his thoughts without quite feeling it. Quietly, listening to the captain over the intercom. Enola, not alone; she was logical (or was it rational?) as always. Logic, or rationality, like talking a man back from the edge of a cliff. But Ic Arbrell had always been risky for the most outrageous views. “I’m thinking I’ve never heard of an inorganic cause for psionic field disturbance,“ he said quietly, even toned, almost blank. He couldn’t keep his eyes open very long, even to pretend he could see. The migraine crept along his skull, and his eyes still watered viciously through the pain. “I’m thinking we’re under attack. Someone’s behind this. Even if it’s effected by a machine of some kind, machines don’t make themselves.”Enola, not alone; he wanted to know if she was afraid, but he didn’t dare ask. In fact, he didn’t know how. He was getting a little too tired to even try. Dr. Floren delivered a deadpan stare in exchange for Dr. Paawin’s denial. “Unless there’s an underlying condition, I assure you, it’s possible.” He let the look upon his colleague linger for just a second, maybe less, as he prepared the biobed to scan Leanna’s abdomen. It was none of Rafa’s business how it happened or who was involved, but he knew the signs when he saw them— even on a tricorder. While the scan worked, Rafa turned to their conscious patients again with initiating paracortex function in mind. Naturally, the first thing to come to mind was ancient inspiration, though he hardly expected Starfleet to approve something without established therapeutic effect on telepaths, despite its well-known effects among Humans. But emergencies were emergencies, and if no one else had any ideas... “There’s always psilocybin. But what do you—?” he stopped with a gasp, staring at the two patients with black, black eyes. “What the kosst1 is this?”

[ Cwm Eliska Bremmer - Ops - Front Ear Station ]It didn't take long for the Vulcan to nail down the source of the signal, and Bremmer was about to send someone to check it out when the Captain changed things. "Aye-aye!" she acknowledged and before long she was considering who to call to back her up. The sweep team would be in full EVA suits, not well-suited for an actual chase, so that meant she'd have to get someone else. The nature of such an evacuation drill meant that every station would be overmanned by design, so there would be a manning pool to draw from to make up any casualties that may have been incurred ahead of time. One quick check pointed her to the nearest shelter station, and she hit the communications button. =A= "Hebert, Shugahira, Lek, this is Bremmer in Ops. We've got casualties and intruders on Deck 15. Meet me at Turbolift 3 and come in heavy."=A= With the message sent, the Crewman made her way away from her console, and to the turbolift. She knew she was headed into danger, but at least out there she'd be doing something she had real control on. The ride in the cab was swift, and rather lonely, but as soon as the doors hissed open, she found the three she'd called to meet her, and they'd taken her words seriously, and she'd not picked the detail out of a hat. Shugahira had a tricorder in hand while Hebert, who had taken an advanced first aid course, had a medkit strapped across her chest. And all carried a rifle as well. Hell, Lek carried one in each of his blue hands... until he tossed one to the newly arrived Bremmer. "This way," she simply said, pointing in one direction, and the four-person team started moving down the corridors they knew like the backs of their own hands, ready to get jumped. Before long, though, they rounded a corner and there, they saw their casualty. A man was laid out on the deck, and there was this... shape hunched over it, indistinct in the dimmed overhead panels and the sickly green pulsing of the radiation alarm lights. "Hey!" Bremmer shouted as her rifle snapped up, but she did not pull the trigger; instead, the shape, the... shadow simply... flew away around the corner. "Shugahira, corner. Lek, check six. Hebert, with me!"The orders flew out of her mouth with precision and intent; all four knew their trade well, and Hebert had a medical tricorder in hand even before she had knelt next to the fellow in question, a Betazoid as Evoris had said. But, it didn't need a scan to know the poor bastard was gone. His skin had gone sallow, and his eyes were wide open... and his face was contorted into a rictus of sheer terror, an impression that was supported by the stench of urine and voided bowels coming from him. "Bremmer, there's nothing on him. No stab wounds, no phaser burns, nothing just... this." Hebert had indeed taken a quick scan, and the only thing that looked out of the ordinary, save for apparently having been scared to death, was tracks of pitch-black blood that was running from the victim's eyes. "And I got nothing here! I don't know what the hell that was or where it went, but it's gone!" Shugahira's own voice was far less than steady, almost as though he'd seen a ghost... Though truth be told that unsettled even Bremmer to some degree. And now, she had to report in. =A= "Bremmer to Ops. Found the source of the call; Betazoid, male, dead at the scene. Not a mark on him except black blood coming from the eyes and looking like... I know that doesn't sound right but looks like he got scared to death and some black blood coming out of his eyes. We... I think we've see the aggressor, some kind of... shadow. I have no idea what it was but it was hovering over him when we got here and it just vanished around the corner."She might be sharp and confident, and even sound like she knew what she was doing... but there was a quaver in Bremmer's voice: she was actually... afraid.

[ T’Laara - ?] T’Laara's movements slowed as fighting only seemed to make it worse. The shadow encircled her, tightening its hold. Clearly she was not dealing with anything ordinary… and there may not be any reasoning with it. She had to focus on the answer. It had told her admit she was lost. It wanted her to show fear, or weakness. Here, in the Vulcan desert. A test, then? She fell still, but a spark of anger flickered to life deep inside her. “You are trying to provoke me into being afraid.” A sandstorm began to brew on the horizon. Thea Baker

[Jovireh] Just a few more steps and this one would be snared forever in another unbreakable cage. She had already proven to be worthy of the feast and all she had do was follow her Mother. However when she stopped in the still empty corridor and uttered a name that it had not heard in sometime. The shadow was pleased, utterly delighted that it had not been forgotten. Quickly casting aside the form of Devra, it emerged from the door to look straight at Jovireh. " Yes, yes I am and unless you follow me, you'll never return to your family".[T'Laara] The tendrils held T'Laara in place but didn't tighten any further as she slowed her movements. Hopeful that it wouldn't need to teach her another lesson about consequences and how to be obedient. The shadow cackled, especially when it sensed the flicker of anger from within its Vulcan prey. " Why would I want to provoke you Dearie?, then again if you don't want to feel real fear, then I suggest that you do as you were told or I shall leave you to die in the sandstorm".This was the perfect test and if she chose to die in this desolate place and at the mercy of the elements, then it would just feast a little earlier than anticipated.

[Ensign Enola - Sickbay]
Enola noted his words with a nod, and thought about it some more. In a way, the Betazoid was right, that something living had to be behind it, and she also doubted that something mechanical would trigger it by. But the voice of the captain pulled her out of her thoughts. Stay awake. All clear. But that might be difficult. Her gaze slid briefly to Ic, who was nestled against her, and she really hoped that he would manage to stay awake despite his tired-looking eyes. But no matter how today would turn out, there was nothing they could do at the moment. Enola was in intelligence and not an expert on such matters, and Ic should just relax. Even if it wasn't pleasant for her, putting her legs up, there wasn't anything she could do at the moment. Well, she could do something, but it was a question of whether the doctors would allow it. "How are you feeling?" she asked Ic a few seconds later, glancing over at him as her thoughts drifted a bit to Evorís again. She wondered how he was doing at the moment. And she still fervently hoped that his symptoms would not worsen as well.

[ Ensign Ic Arbrell — Sickbay, Front Ear] How, she asked, and he sniffled in dull distress. How he felt had stopped— and that was the whole problem. Unsure of how to respond, Ic confessed the first and the loudest thing in his mind. It was an unwelcome change from the echoing analysis of psionic disturbance. “...I don’t want to die.”On a better day, he might have wondered why Enola was so nice to him. On such a day, though, she might not have been. Not like this, anyway. Their meditation sessions were logical enough (they kept his energy down and therefore, presumably, her own was kept safe from it) but she didn’t have to keep talking to him now, if she didn’t want to. On any other day than this, neither of them would be here. He almost broke a promise to himself, and to her by extension, not to show affection. The clinging was enough but the temptation toward tenderness was there. That impulse always was, and probably always would be, no matter how much of his brain was left. He wished desperately that Shavan was here, but didn’t dare to admit that out loud. “What do you wish you could have done, Enola? I wish I had something named after me. And I would have gone to Risa. I don’t know if I even have an imzadi yet,” he lamented, his soft voice almost hollow with the thought. He wouldn’t be even able to have one if they lived, somehow, if there was no cure. But maybe, probably, Shavan wouldn't mind. He staved off a yawn with a clenching of his jaw; it did nothing to keep the tears back from the crushing loneliness of death as it crept in.

[Operations - Command Deck] When asked if she had any ideas as to how they could boost the part of the brain that had been affected. Thea thought for a moment, allowing her mind to search through the knowledge that she had acquired over the years. She may not physically be in Sickbay but that didn't matter as she answered Riyo. =/\= I would recommend the usual stimulants, protein boosts. Although I'm willing to also try any natural remedies that might be useful.... Thea paused mid sentence as Bremmer reported in and told them what her and her team had found. Her stomach tightening at the thought of the man dying in such a horrible way, not to mention the black blood coming out of his eyes and the shadow like something that had been seen. The fear in Eliska's voice was equally concerning as Thea addressed the Crewman. =/\= Acknowledged Crewman, follow the usual procedure and have the body sent to the morgue. I'll notify Sickbay about this latest development and once you're done with the investigation, return to Ops as there might be more to these Shadows and we need to know what that is =/\=Reactivating the channel to Sickbay, Thea then updated them on the latest developments. =/\= Apologies for the slight delay but Security have just confirmed our first fatality, a male Betazoid who looked as though he had been scared to death by some kind of Shadow. The only other visible signs was black blood coming out of his eyes. That might be something to look out for in the others and will keep you updated once we have more information, Baker out =/\=With everything that had happened so far, this was definitely not an ordinary day and yet Thea feared, that something far more sinister was at play and that they didn't have long to figure it out and stop it.

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Sickbay]Well... That just added a whole new level of urgency to the situation. Turning towards the conscious patients, he froze when he saw what Floren had reacted to. But they were still talking, seemingly unaffected by the change in their eyes, so he decided not to comment. Ic was already upset enough. "You're not going to die if I can help it," he spoke reassuringly as he approached. "The rest of your brain is still functioning normally. This is a stimulant that should make it easier for you to stay awake." He injected both Ic and Enola, then turned to the other doctor. "I'll work on the medical treatment. Please keep an eye on Lea... Let me know if there's any change." The only reason he was able to even function right now was that her vitals remained stable. She needed him to stay focused just as much as the others did. Sitting at the desk, he began to synthesize a few proteins, enzymes and amino acids he knew to benefit brain function. "And if you can think of anything else that might help, don't hesitate to speak up." They were well outside Starfleet standard experience, and with Baker being open to non-medical treatments, he would be too. And Dr. Floren was the perfect one for that side of treatment.

[PO1 Jovireh Velal - Dreamland - Ghost Ship]Jovireh wasn't sure what she found more surprising - that she was actually right about this creature, or that it still expected her to believe it. A snarl crossed her face as the anger built at the threat of never seeing her family again. "rha?[fn]Oh really? (very sarcastic)[/fn]" This was a dream, regardless of whether she was asleep or in a coma. And while she didn't practice her defenses as often as she should have, she still knew them. A kaleh[fn]Romulan ritual dagger[/fn] formed in her hand, and her feet shifted into a familiar stance. "khoi-udt![fn]Drop dead![/fn]" She didn't strike just yet, watching the figure in front of her carefully. Thea Baker

[ Cwm Eliska Bremmer - Ops - Front Ear Station ]To say that Bremmer's team was on high alert and somewhat unsettled would be an understatement; they had all seen that... shadow on top of the Betazoid, and one of them had practically chased it around the corner only to have lost it. And now, a dead body that seemed to have been scared to death? Starfleet trained its people well, but there were things that nothing could prepare you for, and that was one of them. But, the Captain had orders, and beyond the obvious immediate she might not agree with them, but the gulf in authority between a Captain and a Crewman was that between a dust mite and a divine being. =A= "Bremmer, acknowledged. Out."=A= The answer was curt, but that was all that needed to be said for the time being. As for a local investigation, there really was not much to do. Log the location, mention the state of the body (including the voided bladder as part of the biohazard contamination of the scene), and attach an isolinear tag to the body so it could be beamed to the morgue at their first opportunity. That took about thirty seconds, including notifying medical types of the need to retrieve the body, and Eliska was leading her detail back towards Ops, still treating the entire trip as moving in a combat situation. However, when they reached the Command Deck, she seemed to relax a little despite the rifle hanging from its sling in front of her. "Captain, just thought I'd bring my team in just in case we're needed again; wouldn't want to get folk panicking by stripping more Security from the shelters and traffic control than's absolutely necessary. And we've seen the damn thing, all of us, so we know we're not crazy."

[Ensign Evorís - Operations, Front Ear] With each passing minute, it was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore his own symptoms, and preserve his composure. His movements were slower than usual, fingers clumsier, thoughts muddier. Even his eyesight clouded at the edges, a murky grey that narrowed even as he focused more intently on his screen. His limbs and eyelids felt heavy, but he dug his heels into the trenches of his Vulcan veins, and bit his lip to maintain concentration. Evorís had no intention of losing consciousness anytime soon. He saved the current scan on an open file, sent out a message to all stations to report back any unusual sightings, then configured a new scan to do a more comprehensive scan of the area surrounding the initial report. Though several life signs could be detected on Deck 15, all of them could be accounted for, and none appeared to be either the victim or the... shadow. He ran through every scan he could think of, though admittedly the list was far more condensed than was ideal in an emergency situation such as this. The station would be much better off with a more senior officer, or someone trained in Science or specialized Operations. Evorís ( —he clutched at the feeling of empty that rolled like hunger through his chest, and blinked through the cobweb darkness that clung to the edges of his vision—) was nothing. Still, the console responded to his desperate incompetence. “Captain, I’m detecting an unusual displacement of neurogenic energy on Deck 14,” he said, the moment it appeared on his screen. It reverted to normal readings instantly, almost as if reacting to his acknowledgement. “It’s gone. Reading within normal parameters.”

[Ensign Enola - Sickbay]
Enola stopped stroking Ic for a moment as she perceived his admission. The fear of death was probably very present in most people, but she always felt it was very illogical, which was why she had successfully repressed it. However, she certainly understood the survival instinct of most species from which this type of fear could result. "I don't know...maybe I should have spent a little more time on Vulcan," she replied to his question about what she would have liked to do. But the captain's voice echoed through the infirmary again. And this time with...news. Not for her, but for Ic. She braced herself for him to jump up and nag again. But she also braced herself for possibly being completely clutched soon. Or maybe he was just too tired to say anything else. She let go of him completely for a moment to sit down in a way that would be easiest to inject her the drug, and then watched how Ic got injected as well, before she hugged him gently. What was she doing here anyway? She was an intelligence officer, not a counselor. But at the moment, someone from that discipline would be quite appropriate. "Please do me a favor: don't have a nervous breakdown," she asked the Betazoid, but also wondered if he had totally noticed the message.
