{Quoted Post(s)} [Felicity Ellis - Bar, Observation Lounge]"Thanks, Judy," Felicity murmured, before taking her drink in hand and raising it to her lips. She drained it, then placed the tumbler back on the bar and waved at the bartender for another. She turned then, her back pressing against the bar as she looked out over the people gathered, eyes avoiding the holograms as the film rolled. "It's all they'll let me give right now."They were just words. She meant them, of course, but in every other sense her hands were completely tied. She felt drained. Chewed up, spat out. "Was it always like this?" She asked the other woman, gesturing in the general direction of Admiral Ellis. Felicity had observed and felt a notable change over the course of the last year or two. "Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical."She felt ancient. She turned again when the bartender returned with the whiskey bottle. Once topped up, she raised her glass in a toast. "To service." [Admiral Antoinette Ellis - Observation Lounge]Arturo LaGanza was a genius, in Antoinette's opinion, and she believed the monument would make an excellent addition to the Science Halls. She moved through the gathered crowd, offering condolences and affirmation as she moved, once or twice pausing to comment on how striking the statue was when she spied several officers staring at it. She then spotted O'Connell and her eyes dropped to the extra pip on her collar. The pilot had not seen fit to inform her benefactor that she'd been promoted, instead leaving the Admiral to find out via other reporting means. She had also ran out on her mandated debrief, and had neglected to check in for weeks. They were overdue a little chat. Admiral Ellis approached, and spared the most fleeting of glances for the woman trying to ply O'Connell with alcohol. "Lieutenant O'Connell," she greeted, an approximation of a warm, familiar smile plastered on her face. "A moment, if you would. I have some news of your parents." Her gaze returned to O'Connell's friend. "You are dismissed."

Her top collar button was already open, her thick brown hair still tucked up formally away from her ears. She didn't seem weepy at the remarks - her funeral demeanor this day was firmly about dark circles under her eyes and clumsily dealing. She'd lost Javi D'Amato, she'd lost her ability to Join, and gotten compliments on her arse from a lost-in-space-for-fifty-years version of herself. It was a lot to take in. Everyone was giving minimal effort at healthy coping, and that would have to be enough. At least they had each other, Kaya thought and immediately judged herself for the sappiness of it. But it was true. Solitude was not what Kaya needed in these trying times. She needed company. "They sent us an admiral this time." Kaya went on, in sing-song. "Upgrade..." She ducked a little around Shavan's shoulder to get a peek at Admiral Ellis who was pulling Syl O'Connell aside - an honor to avoid at all costs. "Oh, I'm asking everyone:" Kaya pivoted. "Did you have kids on the old Mac?" She sipped from her drink. A lot of people did. If they hadn't died in the old Mac's initial stranding. Shavan Th'zhaar [Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]Hearing Eliska's quiet voice beside her, Syl turned to her with a grateful smile when she saw the glass. "Indeed," she replied simply, as there was nothing to really add. However, she had just lifted her hand to accept the glass when another voice - one more familiar than would normally be to someone of her rank - addressed her by name. Keeping her face passive, she lowered her hand away from the glass and turned to offer the woman an equally friendly smile. "Yes, ma'am." She highly doubted this had anything to do with her parents... Any such news she would have received from her siblings, first. However, Syl certainly wasn't clueless as to what this was actually about. Her gaze shifted back to Eliska briefly. "I'll catch up with you later." Her words had a double meaning - not only would she find her friend after the Admiral was done with her, but she would also be needing more than one drink. Then Admiral Ellis had her full attention once more, as she stood with her back straight and hands folded behind her, waiting to see if they were going to have this conversation here - or if they were going to be going elsewhere.
Tag Eliska Bremmer Felicity Ellis [ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Observation Lounge, Front Ear Station ]This was hardly the place and time to get plastered, but there would always be things that were easier to digest with a moderate bit of alcohol. Dealing with a memorial for people they had lost in the Ellipse, and the entire crew, the entire community they had left behind to save themselves was one of them. And she drew comfort from the pilot's presence; Syl might be downplaying her own resilience, but Eliska had nothing but admiration for the sheer force of her will to just never give up. Eyes met, smiles were exchanged, and a hand came to grab the glass... that was until the Admiral herself interrupted them. What the hell did she want? Typically flag officers didn't interact with the help, whether they be junior officers or non-commissioned, unless they absolutely had to. Or was she the sort to think that a noncom's place was to be nowhere near an officer unless spoken to? And the Admiral wanted something with Syl, with news from her family? Oh, that couldn't be good... And it got worse when three words were spoken. She was dismissed? In a social event? That was... brutal. "Yes, Ma'am," she managed, and when Syl mentioned coming back to her, she did manage a brief smile, a real one. "Of course, Miss O'Connell." She wanted so much more. To give Syl a reassuring squeeze, to call her by name, let her know she'd be right there; but there really wasn't time for that, was there? So, it was with both glasses of vodka still in her hands that Eliska headed back to the bar, where she found herself leaning next to Mister Th'zaar and Chief Som, and she downed the glass in her left hand in but one go, and considered the second one, but decided against hammering that one back as well. She had the metabolism and tolerance to deal with that much booze entering her system that quickly, but there were still appearances to be kept. Though, with the pair next to her, she had to ask; scuttlebutt was something that always traveled in the fleet, and generally speaking, who was better-informed than a Senior Chief, without being a commissioned officer? "Mister Th'zaar, Chief," she acknowledged the pair as she turned towards them. No, she would have to approach this delicately... though she couldn't help but look towards the Admiral... but especially at Syl O'Connell who'd just been so cornered.

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Observation Lounge, Front Ear Station ] The Andorian's head tilted to the side as she studied the artwork before her. Or at least that was what Admiral Ellis had called it. Kova wasn't going to disagree with the woman. Besides, she clearly had to be more of an authority on Terran culture than Kova. Of course, this was in line with humans' preoccupation with phallic symbols. After all, their planets were littered them. Grand monuments that stood... erect and shameless. Which begged the question why they tended to be such prudes when it came to things such as nudity and sexuality. Of course, this particular phallus appeared to be... crushed. Supposedly, artists were always making some sort of statement with their pieces of work. Whatever message was being sent by this, however escaped Kova. Though, she was confident it was sending the exact message that Admiral Ellis desired. Her eyes found the Admiral who seemed to be casually speaking with Syl. It was common practice for admirals to approach legacy families of Starfleet. Perhaps that was all this was, yet Antoinette Ellis rarely did anything that she did not benefit from herself.
[NPC - Zyri Zh'raal - Observation Lounge, Front Ear Station ] Zyri hadn't been certain if she should come. In many ways, she found herself so confused. Sure, there were a number of faces that were missing in that room. People she had grown up with and admired. And yet, there were just as many still scattered about the room. She didn't know if she should feel sad, or guilty about not appearing as upset by all of this as her father. So many of the people he cared about and treasured were gone... and yet surrounding him just the same. Perhaps it was out of instinct that her eyes shifted to find Kova. The Andorian appeared to be in thought... and isolated, at least for now. She was admiring the statue of... of... well, Zyri wasn't entirely sure what the statue was supposed to be of. Yet, it had been a kind gesture. She made a mental note to thank the Admiral... though it wasn't something she wanted to do alone. The woman seemed rather intimidating. And Zyri would prefer to avoid a panic attack while she was at this memorial. She simply began to move around the room. She avoided eye contact as she nursed the virgin drink in her hand. She had considered exiting early, but wasn't certain that her father would approve of it. So, for now, she'd do her best to simply blend into the background and bide her time.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Observation Lounge]"You're not old. What would that make me?" Judy answered, subtly accepting Felicity's other points. Not having a drink to toast with, she nodded, and quickly turned to the bartender. "Synthale, please.""You are right that things have changed; I've felt it," she added, in a somewhat hushed tone. "Everyone's disposable now. At best, they get... that."Judy still wasn't sure which STD the memorial was inspired by, but it was definitely one. [ Thea - Observation Lounge, Front Ear] [...] Creamy, boozy and everything delicious in between, Thea took a decent sip before seeking out Felicity and Judy. Catching the end of the former CO's comment, Thea didn't dare look at the so called monument for fear of breaking down in giggles. " Yeah I can't look at it .. no idea what they were thinking but we'll honour them in a much better way". [Felicity Ellis - Bar, Observation Lounge]Felicity didn't respond to the question about age, knowing so much better than to fall into that trap. Instead she managed a wry grin, and took a sip of her whiskey while Judy busied herself with getting a drink to toast with. Hearing that others were noticing the strange tonal shift was something of a relief. She pointed with index finger at the statue. "If I ever get that, kill it with a torpedo, please." Honestly, getting nothing at all would be better. Then she too lowered her tone, and continued, "Whatever direction we're going in, I'm not sure I'll like the destination."It was the first time she'd said anything like that aloud. She hadn't even brought it up with Greg, who largely understood her position, but had managed to extricate himself from Federation business seemingly just in time. When Thea joined them, she returned her gaze to the offensive piece they were all somehow supposed to be admiring. "An unintentional but effective safe-sex advertisement for those poor students." She took another sip of the freshened drink. "A reminder to always take your meds before certain away missions. Speaking of, the appeal to return to the Ellipse was denied. Again." Her eyes swept over the officers present, knowing that a good portion of them would not accept that. Felicity felt as though she was standing on the edge of a cliff, and the only way across to safety was a tightrope.

[ Thea - Observation Lounge, Front Ear] For all she could hear the voices and the beginnings of conversations going around her. Thea found herself transfixed on the memorial programme for a few minutes longer. Grief could be a funny thing and in some ways it reminded her of the loss she'd had and how more profound it seemed whilst remembering those who had been lost. Finally after straightening herself out and deciding that now was probably a good time to get a drink, Thea made her way to the bar. Obviously she wasn't the first one to think of that and didn't blame those already present as she placed her order with the bartender. Despite being on a bit of a health kick well changing her diet slightly and eating less junk or trying to after her operation a few months ago. Thea knew it was one of those occasions where it didn't matter and so didn't feel guilty with her choice of a chocolate mudslide. Creamy, boozy and everything delicious in between, Thea took a decent sip before seeking out Felicity and Judy. Catching the end of the former CO's comment, Thea didn't dare look at the so called monument for fear of breaking down in giggles. Much more so when Felicity mentioned that her request had been denied once again. "Don't make the same mistake that I did," she advised. "At the end of the day, it's not San Francisco that's losing sleep."It was a simplistic, maybe understated, statement, but it was Judy's issue with Starfleet in a nutshell - the Admirals didn't care anymore about right and wrong.

"Did you have kids on the old Mac?" She sipped from her drink. A lot of people did. If they hadn't died in the old Mac's initial stranding. [Elder Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]The bar was a popular place to be after the speeches were over. He really should have expected as much. As a few people gathered around him to order their own drinks, Cerjess did his best not to look at any of them. Faces so young, so real, so full of life. However, there was a shade of turquoise he was unable to ignore. A color he hadn't seen in so very long, until he did again. A person whose death had had among the most lasting impacts on his life. Shavan lifted his own glass in agreement, Zak's young voice spoke his own blessing. Cerjess's finger tapped the empty glass that was in the middle of the line he was forming in front of him. "That was yours," he muttered without looking at Shavan, his voice gruff with emotion. Kaya - much younger but always so exuberant - began to speak on Shavan's other side. He was about to answer the question for him, but he wasn't so sure that would be entirely welcome. And he wasn't done remembering yet. So instead, he gestured for another shot to be poured. [ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Observation Lounge, Front Ear Station ][...] So, it was with both glasses of vodka still in her hands that Eliska headed back to the bar, where she found herself leaning next to Mister Th'zaar and Chief Som, and she downed the glass in her left hand in but one go, and considered the second one, but decided against hammering that one back as well. Naturally, he had looked up what had happened to himself in the other timeline. And that was now another thing he was trying to forget… or at least keep pretending would never happen in this life. Shaking his head, he turned back to Kaya when she asked if he had kids on the other Mac. “Nah. I don't think kids are for me, anyway.” Shavan drained his glass and gestured for another. “Did you?” There had at least been an older Kaya on the ship that day. Eliska Bremmer arrived next. “Hey. Join us.” He returned her greeting, less formally, before following her gaze to Admiral Ellis and Syl. Syl O'Connell Kaya Som Eliska Bremmer

[ Thea - Observation Lounge, Front Ear] Felicity's take on the supposed monument to the dead was quite accurate in Thea's opinion as she finally tore her gaze away from it. As far as she was concerned she had given it enough of her attention. " I'd agree with that and I feel sorry for whoever has to see it every day" she replied in a quiet tone, before Felicity shared that the appeal to return to the Ellipse had been denied again. That was incredibly frustrating for her never mind those who had been there and Thea thought it was mind boggling as to why Command would constantly deny them the chance to save the other Mac. Stupidity was one word for it or had they become so detached from reality that they would only consider it, if it benefitted them in some way. Judy's advice was sound, especially after seeing what she went through with the Caldonia 5. They couldn't do that again and so Thea spoke again in a quiet tone so only her friends would hear. " Personally I think it's stupid that they've denied it again and I can't see the harm in going back".She might be a Captain now but she wasn't cold and emotionless and knew that they couldn't just leave it like that. *************** [ Mila - Observation Lounge, Deck 11] A glance towards the bar told Mila that she hadn't been the only one interested in getting a drink. Although she wasn't sure if she was up to having a conversation with anyone, especially as she considered the possibility of leaving and maybe visiting the Spotty Alibi instead. Usually she was more outgoing and sociable but lately hadn't felt like it, preferring to stick to her quarters or the Lower Promenade. Deep down Mila knew the reason why, even if she wasn't ready to admit it and yet came to the realisation that she couldn't just sit out of the way all night. So as tempting as it was to leave, Mila took a deep breath then slowly made her way towards the bar.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]Syl nodded and silently followed the older woman, grateful that even though they left the crowd they remained in the Observation Lounge. And sure enough, as soon as she was certain no one else could hear them, the Admiral whirled on her with a far less pleasant tone. The pilot blinked with an internal cringe and tried to ignore the flash of tingling heat that spread through her chest. Somehow, she managed to keep her voice level as she replied. "I apologize, ma'am. I haven't wanted to waste your time by contacting you just to tell you I have nothing to report." Which was the truth, mostly. Although she kept to her ear to the ground among the varying circles on the station, there had been very little happening that she felt the Admiral needed - or wanted - to know about. She had even followed through with spending several hours off duty with Captain Eastman and hadn't learned anything of note. Everyone seemed to be pulling their act together over the past couple months. Or they were at least getting better and hiding their screw ups.

[ Kaya Som ]"Bremmer," Kaya lifted her chin in greeting and shifted to make room in their circle. It was odd seeing so many of the castaways from the Old Mac all together in one place. There were hundreds of crew on the ship at any given time, so unless you shared duty or quarters, you could go weeks without encounters. See there, that was Cerjess Miren - the older one. Now there were two Trill on board who'd helped her to Sickbay that day, who'd seen the shard of bulkhead sticking out of her. Which one was she supposed to thank? It was hard to know. And over there, the Andorian Trill - a union one just didn't see in this galaxy, the obvious offspring of Kova Sh'qaleq and ... someone. There was a sort of unspoken rule among expatriot Trills to look out for each other, but Kaya hadn't fully fulfilled that obligation, at least not in terms of seeking out Kova's girl. Old Kaya might have smacked her for the laziness of it. Oh there, and now Kaya felt an ache too deep to heed. She put a smile on her face instead. "Nah, no kids that I know of. We didn't get that far into conversation before, you know." In fact, Kaya's older self had said very little about her fifty-seven years in the ellipse. "I can't imagine in though, having kids when you have no idea if you'd ever get out? Doing that to a kid...?" Kaya wasn't shy about sharing the opinion. Eliska Bremmer, Shavan Th'zhaar

No, whatever Admiral Ellis wanted, it couldn't be good. Not when she knew the relationship the pilot had with her parents... and not in the way she'd bee summarily dismissed her. No, there was something more... could it have something to do with what Syl's counterpart had said, back in the Ellipse? Well, there was no way for the Petty Officer to know at this time. And like everything else, she would not be prying; if Syl wanted to share, she would in due course, on her own time. Though, when the conversation went towards children, Bremmer felt the need to speak. She hadn't given the whole thing much thought, but the memorial had a way to hurry those things along. "I died," she said softly. "And I still don't know if it was me me who died, or someone else. Can't wrap my head around it." After all, that second glass of vodka was really appealing right now, and she took a sip from it. "And I don't know how. I spoke to Sy... "At the end of the day, it's not San Francisco that's losing sleep."It was a simplistic, maybe understated, statement, but it was Judy's issue with Starfleet in a nutshell - the Admirals didn't care anymore about right and wrong. [Felicity Ellis - Bar, Observation Lounge]These things were easy for Judy and Thea to say; one had retired and the other wasn't directly or ethically impacted. Neither faced losing their position or their jobs. She remained silent for a few moments, taking another sip of her whiskey as she considered. "Would you have done it differently?" She asked Judy eventually, referring of course to the incident with the Caldonians. "Would you have given up your command to do what you felt to be the 'right thing'?" Hindsight was a wonderful thing, and Felicity wasn't all that sure the other two ladies held an honest answer for her. She loved and respected them both, but this was her own grave she was digging. She caught sight of her mother cornering their pilot, and her eyes narrowed.
[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - Observation Lounge]"Don't insult my intelligence and I won't insult yours," Antoinette Ellis bit back, her smile diminishing a couple of notches. "Walking out on your official debriefing, as ordered by me, enduring a mercenary attack on our newly colonised Serenity and being pulled into an graviton ellipse and experiencing multiple paradoxes, is hardly "nothing to report". Or are you just being obtuse?"Nearby a server was kind of hanging around, holding a tray filled with champagne flutes. He'd been ordered to make sure the admiral had a fresh drink in her hand at all times, but she looked entirely unapproachable. Sensing the eyes on her, her head snapped in his direction and she bestowed upon him one of her patented 'looks'. As he scurried away, she turned that same look on O'Connell.

She supposed she had already crossed the Rubicon of criticizing her former employers, but it still felt odd. She took a long gulp. "Well, at the time, I believed that Starfleet, as an organization, still cared about such things, like it did when I joined it all those years ago. I believed, perhaps naïvely, that their release would become a high priority, if pushed through the proper channels," she explained. "Had I known then what I know now, I would've been happy to part with my commission."Indeed, it was this realization - reached gradually and some months later - that had led her out of the fleet. Not to mention, this time, Starfleet had even less reason to care - the ellipse was just a temporal anomaly, wasn't it? "But I had a lot to retire to. I have a husband, children, grandchildren."She certainly could understand why Felicity might be less ready to take the plunge. The younger woman was in such a radically different place in her life. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Antoinette bothering Syl. That was... not a pairing she would've expected to see interact.

[ Thea - Observation Lounge, Front Ear] The questions that Felicity then put to Judy also gave Thea the chance to think about what she would do if she had been in their proverbial shoes. Caldonia had been a sore spot with the former CO, Thea knew that and how it had affected her deeply. She had seen it, offered support and yet deep down, Thea knew that she would of stayed behind and ignored orders. Then there was Felicity herself who had lost her command and been demoted. It was ultimately a difficult situation to be in regardless of who you were and even thinking about it now, doubted that her own view would change. Taking a sip of her drink as Judy then answered the questions. It was good to know why she had done what she did and how she had come to the realisation, with how things had changed with the higher ups. For Thea, these two women were her closest friends and perhaps they wouldn't expect the answer she was about to give but seeing Antoinette practically accost Syl, simply encouraged her more. " Given everything that's happened lately with the death of my mother, the surgery etc, well it puts everything into perspective".All of this was said quietly as Thea then continued. " So what I would do is risk it all, do the right thing regardless of orders. Because regret and guilt are awful mistresses".Those still trapped in the ellipse especially deserved freedom and if there was any way for them to help them then Thea wasn't opposed to turn a blind eye and deny everything if approached by the higher ups.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]A muscle in her jaw flexed as Ellis reminded her of the "debriefing". It had taken weeks for her to get the nightmares back under control... A slightly glazed expression settled in her hazel eyes as she replied. "What he demanded wasn't an official debriefing, it was a type of psychological torture the Federation has outlawed against prisoners." Part of her wondered if the Admiral was actually aware of what her Lieutenant had done... or if he had created that program on his own. "And it did not escape my notice that I was the only one expected to go through that." Matt didn't even have to leave his living room. Shavan got to chat in a bar over drinks. Kova was invited to a fancy dinner. Charlie never even got debriefed... "I beg your pardon, ma'am... but my understanding of our agreement was that you wanted information that would not be included in official reports. The attack on Serenity... escaping the Ellipse... Everything that I saw and heard fell well within Starfleet standards of expectation." It seemed redundant to make the call just to tell her that these happened, when she'd already received the reports. Syl had gone through her memories of those events in great details several times, searching for anything that might be worth mentioning. Every time she reached the same conclusion - The COs, and everyone else for that matter, did everything right. Even her father wouldn't have anything negative to say, and that in itself said a lot.

[Felicity Ellis - Bar, Observation Lounge]The inference that she had nothing because she was childless and unmarried was like a slap to her face, but Felicity had to remind herself that different people placed importance on very different things. She was comfortable with the decisions she'd made thus far, and that was what mattered in the end. And with that realisation, she answered her own question. If she did nothing, she'd never get over it. "Excuse me," she murmured to them both. She drained the remainder of whiskey in her glass and moved away, her mother and Syl O'Connell in her sights.

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - Observation Lounge]O'Connell chose obtuse. She chose victimhood, she chose this moment to challenge an admiral. Not just challenge, but arrogantly so; daring to tell Antoinette that she had the right to decide what the admiral needed to know. "Smüggintel's job was to see how much you remembered about the mining process by walking you through a reconstruction." Admiral Ellis was regarding O'Connell with disbelief at the other woman's precious carry-on. "And our agreement was that you regularly report in to me after each assignment. As you appear keen now to move the goalposts of our arrangement, perhaps we should end it."She smiled and raised her hand. She snapped her fingers, drawing the server back to her. She took a champagne flute and, still smiling, looked back at O'Connell. "Are you still here?"
