[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - Observation Lounge, Deck 11, Front Ear Station]The set up was simple and tasteful, much like Admiral Antoinette Ellis herself. She had not approved of the holographic presentation that was about to be made, nor the light show that was due to follow, but at least all of the relevant people had been invited and she would be available to minimise any damage or fuss that the deceased officers' loved ones might kick up. Pubic relations had taken something of a hit in the last year or so, and those in positions of influence in HQ and the Fleet were being strategically placed to manage it. Antoinette felt it was the worst use of her own talents, but she recognised the importance of positive opinion. The woman adjusted her already perfect, pristine dress whites, and continued with her carefully crafted speech from her place on the small stage. So far she'd spoken about the goals and responsibilities of the officers, their commitment, and the understanding their families were showing in the face of required sacrifice. It was time to add the personal touch; show her humanity. "Today we are gathered to honour those who gave their lives in the line of duty, and we salute their bravery and contribution. Without people like Bloggins, D'Amato and Saracen, we could not continue moving forward with unique discoveries that serve all citizens of our vast Federation." Yes, she'd even learned several of their names. She stepped out from behind the podium and moved purposefully toward a tall object which was hidden beneath a white sheet. "Before I pass you over to the Commanding Officer in Charge of your loved ones that fateful stardate, I would like to present you with a token of our appreciation. This piece of art was commissioned to commemorate your colleagues, friends and family, and will take pride of place in the Science Hall of Starfleet Academy. They will forever be remembered for their contribution to Science, and indeed, to our hearts and lives."The Admiral tugged the sheet with a sure flick of her wrist, to reveal the "art". She exited the stage to mostly silence, with only a small set of individuals not too shocked in the face of the monument and the Admiral's words to clap. [Felicity Ellis - Observation Lounge, Deck 11, Front Ear Station]Felicity was very taken with how ugly the statue was. So much so, that she almost forgot she was due to speak, and almost forgot that her own mother had basically apportioned all the blame for the deaths of the crew to her. But she remembered to avoid the other Ellis' gaze, having no intention of engaging any further. The issues Antoinette had with not being allowed to see her grandchild, Felicity's little niece, were not something she was willing to get involved with. Neither was her mother someone she wanted to give any more thought to - there were others who deserved it more. She hadn't wanted to do this. She'd wanted to play the holographic tribute and then retire to the bar for the next two days. In that moment though, she was glad to be there. Her mother's words had been cold, detached, and she wanted to give more, as self-absorbed as that seemed. Felicity took her place behind the podium, but she looked a lot less at peace than the elder Ellis had. "We each of us are here because we knew, deep within us, that there was more beyond our homes. We wanted to see more. We needed to experience it. There isn't any amongst our crew who hadn't at some stage during their youth looked upward - and wondered. This is what we share. What we truly have in common. It's not the uniform, it's not the pips on our collars or our commitment to service; it's our hunger to learn. That's our purpose."She couldn't help the irritation that surged within her, but she could not decide where to direct it. She was angry with herself for what had happened, but she was also angry with everyone else. Command, paperwork and politics stood between her and her pursuit of closure. Felicity was not good at accepting being told 'no', especially when she knew the right thing to say was 'yes'. "When I lost my brother I thought I was finished. It didn't matter that his contributions would save lives; I didn't care about anything that followed losing him. But I did know that I couldn't let his death be for nothing. And ensuring that his work continued helped me to recover my hunger for purpose." Felicity turned and looked up at the glittering holoprojections of their dead crew. Please, forgive me. The memory of giving the order to leave the Ellipse flashed across her mind's eye, reminding her of what they'd left behind... And the promise she'd made. We won't forget you. "We started this together, and our purpose now will be to see it through. We can do better."The memorial program played as she stepped down off the platform and made a beeline for the bar. Behind her the forms of the fallen came to life in a beautifully crafted film. Perfect captures of those they'd lost appeared before the crowd, playing important moments in their lives, giving glimpses and soundbites of the personalities behind the uniforms. A birth, a graduation, a smiling face in a Mess Hall, a studious head bent over a plasma manifold. "... We've made it!" "It's always been my dream to follow in the footsteps of the greats: Archer, Kirk, Picard..."
"One day I will captain my own ship."
"So, a Vulcan, a Romulan and a human walk into a bar..."
"Whiskey," she ordered, speaking around the lump forming in her throat.

[ Thea - Observation Lounge, Front Ear] Thea might not have been directly involved in the mission that had led to the discovery of the ellipse and their older selves. But she did appreciate the sacrifice and all the other emotions associated with having to leave the other Mac behind aside from the couple that had been brought back. She also understood the frustration over Command refusing the request to return and fulfil the promise that had been made, so wasn't exactly listening properly as Admiral Ellis spoke. Regardless of the words coming from the Admiral, Thea was here to pay her respects to the fallen and support those who had experienced everything out there. Naturally she had already shared her views and opinions with the others and had learned years ago how to appear as professional as possible despite what she might think to herself. Then came the reveal of the monument and well Thea was left speechless not even realising that Antoinette had left the stage. Not that many people clapped and yet Thea didn't feel guilty for not doing so either. When it came to Felicity, the XO had her full attention, knowing that she was speaking from the heart without having to do any research. Genuine emotion shone through in that moment as she stood watching the memorial programme. This was the part of the job that she never liked but would give her everything to not forget and always remember. *********** [ Mila - Observation Lounge, Deck 11] Numb was what Mila felt as she stood just off to the side, wishing for this to be over or at least the part where the Admiral was talking. Sending a silent prayer of thanks when it finally came to an end, before that so called piece of art was unveiled. It looked horrendous in Mila's opinion and an insult to those whose sacrifice she repeated over and over. Biting her tongue at what she really wanted to say as it wouldn't do her any good. Retreating a little more into herself, Mila then looked up as Commander Ellis took the podium and there was a woman who she respected, who hadn't wanted to give up despite the choices that had to be made. Every waking moment had been dedicated to studying everything she could get her hands on and the glimmer of hope of rescuing her daughter along with the others. Something that had been denied to them now and she would never forgive Command for doing that to them. Seeing Captain Baker observing the programme, Mila knew that she understood but what use was that. For now Mila sat nearest the window, wanting to gather her thoughts before doing anything else and then she would drink until she forgot.

[Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Observation Lounge]The bond between a Captain and her crew was longer than an employment contract - it was for life. Even though Judy hadn't been on that mission, hadn't been directly involved, the people were her people, and the fact that she had left Starfleet did not change that. She stood in the back, distinctly civilian in her black dress (she'd never liked the dress whites as funeral attire; they were inappropriately bright), trying her best to tune Antoinette Ellis out. The woman was an officer of the new kind - the kind that looked past morality, looked past the value of a life - in the pursuit of cynical ends that could justify any means. But the art, the horrific monument, that wasn't something she could tune out. It was a monument to the fleet's moral decline, a contemptible edifice with no ties to its actual purpose... and it was a dick. At least Felicity's tribute, genuine and heartfelt, redeemed the service. The young woman had known too much grief, and she had a good heart - she cared. Judy had been proud to call Felicity a subordinate, and before that a superior, and always a friend. Eagle-eyed thanks to her contact lenses, Judy saw Felicity move for the bar. She could at least imagine the personal hell that the other woman was going through, having endured the abandonment of the Caldonia Five. She made her approach towards Felicity at the bar, her knees silently protesting her decision to wear heels, as they always did. "That was very well said," Judy complimented, deciding this was a slightly more tactful opener than a joke about the sculpture. "From the heart, as it should be."

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]
Syl stood amongst the audience as the Admiral spoke, but her attention was far away, replaying another speech she had heard. You're trusting the wrong one. Her older self's words had been stuck in her mind from the moment they were spoken. It was part of the reason she hadn't contacted the Admiral for another report. A decision she was sure would be pointed out to her soon... And the severity of the repercussions would give her the answers that she was still looking for.
She had grown a lot since that deal had been made. The pilot's reputation now extended beyond being the rookie that escaped Caldonia. There was a part of her that knew she no longer needed the Admiral's assistance in her career. But she also wasn't naive enough to believe she could break that agreement without consequences. Her career could be ended in the same way it began. For yet another time in her life... Syl was trapped, completely at the mercy of the one with all the power.
So lost in her thoughts, she hadn't even noticed the unveiling of the monument, or the Admiral leaving the stage. But at some point, the Commander's more emotional voice broke through, and she forced herself to pay attention to the rest of what was being said. She didn't know any of those who had died, but even so she gave the holographic display the respect they deserved.

[Elder Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]
Cerjess had never been a stranger to loneliness. It had been a constant companion for the majority of his life. However, the time that had passed since being rescued from the Ellipse had been filled with a very different type of loneliness. On this station full of people, people he had once known, even cared about... Zyri was the only one who really knew him. The only one that he still knew. Everywhere he turned was a reminder of those he had lost, even before the rest of his crew was left behind. He had made a promise to his younger self when they returned to Front Ear that he wouldn't interfere in the scientist's life or relationships. It was a promise he kept by not really socializing at all. He wouldn't be surprised if many had forgotten he was even still here.
But when word reached him about the memorial service, he felt he needed to be there. While he honored those who lost their lives among the younger crew... Cerjess also remembered those whom had passed over the 57 years they were trapped. Sitting at the bar with his back to the projections, he picked up the third shot of Saurian brandy that had been placed before him, whispering a name over the glass. "Kova Sh'qaleq." Then he downed the shot, and set the glass beside the two other empty ones. His plan was to remember the lost until he couldn't remember the night.

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Observation Lounge, Front Ear Station ]When the memorial for the people lost in the Ellipse had been announced, Eliska wasn't sure if she would be going. But in the end, she had decided to go; she had been the one to check the vitals on Ensign Bloggins even when she already knew what pressing two fingers to her neck would have reported. And she had seen an older version of Syl, who had looked at her as though she was looking at a ghost; and that younger woman who'd called her 'mom'. A woman who could have been her own adopted daughter as well. Not that she was likely to ever know. Not that she knew what had happened to her counterpart, beyond that she had died. And they had been left behind in the Ellipse, at their own request no less. That didn't sit right with Bremmer; no more than it had when Syl and four others were abandoned in a prison camp. So she had dredged up her dress uniform from the deepest reaches of her closet and put herself in it to attend the memorial. And this Admiral Ellis, said to be Commander Ellis' mother, was just droning on about sacrifice and what it meant to wear the uniform... speaking many words yet saying so very little in her opinion. And then, she had to reveal that memorial sculpture of hers... and Bremmer was one of those who was struck dumb by the display; so far as she was concerned, it said nothing about commitment to science and duty, let alone of the gap left in the lives of those who'd survived. Not unless the Admiral associated such things with misshapen genitalia. But, at least, Commander Ellis' own speech was one that Eliska could get behind. She was speaking, well, like a person. Not like some empty fancy suit with a bunch of understated metalwork at the collar. And once she was done, Bremmer found herself, of all things, misty-eyed. And it was blinking away tears she wasn't even sure of the source that she made her way to the bar and ordered one, no, two glasses of lovingly chilled vodka, and picked her way through the crowd until she stopped next to Syl, and offered her one of the glasses. "To absent comrades," she quietly offered as a greeting, and as a toast.

[Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Observation Lounge][...] She made her approach towards Felicity at the bar, her knees silently protesting her decision to wear heels, as they always did. "That was very well said," Judy complimented, deciding this was a slightly more tactful opener than a joke about the sculpture. "From the heart, as it should be." [Felicity Ellis - Bar, Observation Lounge]"Thanks, Judy," Felicity murmured, before taking her drink in hand and raising it to her lips. She drained it, then placed the tumbler back on the bar and waved at the bartender for another. She turned then, her back pressing against the bar as she looked out over the people gathered, eyes avoiding the holograms as the film rolled. "It's all they'll let me give right now."They were just words. She meant them, of course, but in every other sense her hands were completely tied. She felt drained. Chewed up, spat out. "Was it always like this?" She asked the other woman, gesturing in the general direction of Admiral Ellis. Felicity had observed and felt a notable change over the course of the last year or two. "Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical."She felt ancient. She turned again when the bartender returned with the whiskey bottle. Once topped up, she raised her glass in a toast. "To service." [Admiral Antoinette Ellis - Observation Lounge]Arturo LaGanza was a genius, in Antoinette's opinion, and she believed the monument would make an excellent addition to the Science Halls. She moved through the gathered crowd, offering condolences and affirmation as she moved, once or twice pausing to comment on how striking the statue was when she spied several officers staring at it. She then spotted O'Connell and her eyes dropped to the extra pip on her collar. The pilot had not seen fit to inform her benefactor that she'd been promoted, instead leaving the Admiral to find out via other reporting means. She had also ran out on her mandated debrief, and had neglected to check in for weeks. They were overdue a little chat. Admiral Ellis approached, and spared the most fleeting of glances for the woman trying to ply O'Connell with alcohol. "Lieutenant O'Connell," she greeted, an approximation of a warm, familiar smile plastered on her face. "A moment, if you would. I have some news of your parents." Her gaze returned to O'Connell's friend. "You are dismissed."

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Observation Lounge] While he wasn’t sure he wanted to be there, it was only appropriate to attend this event. Shavan stood still in his dress uniform, watching Admiral Ellis impassively. The measure of attention he paid to the speech was only due to his prior meeting with the speaker. As was to be expected from such a thing, it was a lot of pretty words that left out more than they said. Typical and dull. Perhaps this event would bring a measure of closure to some, if they wanted to buy into it, though he was unmoved by listening. In truth he had not been closely acquainted with any of those on the screen. Though the story of the other ship, left behind, weighed more heavily. Something had felt off ever since the ellipse. He had spent so much time since studying it, but it still felt like failing. The sculpture looked terrible. Definitely a failure. Not to mention the grotesque but definitive resemblance to something that usually had little to do with memorials. Commander Ellis went on to speak of continuing on their work, and maybe she believed the words more. But without any more action, it was almost the same. At least there were drinks, right? Shavan went straight for the bar after, momentarily stopping near the older Cerjess. Not sure what to say, (there was nothing about any of this he wanted to think too deeply about), he simply raised a glass when he heard the name the Trill was toasting to. soft tag Syl O'Connell , open

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Observation Lounge]"You're not old. What would that make me?" Judy answered, subtly accepting Felicity's other points. Not having a drink to toast with, she nodded, and quickly turned to the bartender. "Synthale, please.""You are right that things have changed; I've felt it," she added, in a somewhat hushed tone. "Everyone's disposable now. At best, they get... that."Judy still wasn't sure which STD the memorial was inspired by, but it was definitely one.

[Lt. JG Rin Zakir - Observation Lounge, Front Ear]
Zak felt that it would be remiss to not attend this memorial ceremony, seeing as there were moments when it could have easily been him. He didn't know any of the deceased all that well, though there were one or two that he wished they had. He nodded along to the admiral's words, his mind going back to that particularly stardate. The ellipse had taken many lives among the crew, and he could not forget those still trapped there. Where they even still alive? He'd been angry when he heard that there would not be a rescue effort, even though those he thought of were from another life.
He'd met his older self, somewhat frail but still him. He'd met his daughter, a bright and hopeful young woman who he'd since learned had children of her own. Who was the father? Who was her mother? So many questions he would perhaps never learn the answer too, but nevertheless weighed heavy as he sat there in his pristine and very white dress uniform. He didn't blame Ellis. Not once, but he had since prayed to the Prophets every day for the souls that would perhaps forever remain doomed to their fate.
The mood was sombre, at least until the monument to the fallen was revealed. His jaw dropped as he tried to unsee what he thought he had seen. No, not happening.
"That...looks painful.", he winced to no one in particular as he tried to stifle a laugh. For the love of the Prophets, what was he, twelve? Though there were murmurs in the crowd, he was pretty sure he was the only one who was about to laugh out loud, and at a funeral of all places!
He tried to keep a straight face as Commander Ellis then took to the podium with some heartfelt words of her own. Again, he agreed, but he couldn't take his eyes off the phallic memorial. Would he be demoted if he asked the admiral what it was supposed to be? Best not to risk it.
As the memorial program began, he tried to focus on the faces that they would never see again but had once very much been real. The ensign who had been on the bridge that day, more than a twisted corpse but someone who'd once been full of life. The guy who was always telling jokes that were dumb even by his standards, he'd shared a drink with him once or twice. He would have loved that monument...
It was no good, he was going to need to find a quiet spot to hide and let it out. No matter how he tried to think seriously and remain solemn, he just kept looking at 'it'!
To his credit, he did at least make it look as though he was very calmly making a dignified exit, but he didn't go far. He intended to rejoin the gathering as soon as possible, but Prophets be his judge...
After getting that out of his system, he too made his way to the bar, ordering his usual tipple as he noticed and older Cerjess raising a glass.
"Prophets be with them", he spoke quietly before taking a sip.

[ SCPO Kaya Som ]"If I die on a mission, my memorial art better be yonic," Kaya said sliding up next to Shavan Th'zhaar. Her top collar button was already open, her thick brown hair still tucked up formally away from her ears. She didn't seem weepy at the remarks - her funeral demeanor this day was firmly about dark circles under her eyes and clumsily dealing. She'd lost Javi D'Amato, she'd lost her ability to Join, and gotten compliments on her arse from a lost-in-space-for-fifty-years version of herself. It was a lot to take in. Everyone was giving minimal effort at healthy coping, and that would have to be enough. At least they had each other, Kaya thought and immediately judged herself for the sappiness of it. But it was true. Solitude was not what Kaya needed in these trying times. She needed company. "They sent us an admiral this time." Kaya went on, in sing-song. "Upgrade..." She ducked a little around Shavan's shoulder to get a peek at Admiral Ellis who was pulling Syl O'Connell aside - an honor to avoid at all costs. "Oh, I'm asking everyone:" Kaya pivoted. "Did you have kids on the old Mac?" She sipped from her drink. A lot of people did. If they hadn't died in the old Mac's initial stranding. Shavan Th'zhaar

[Ensign Ic Arbrell — Observation Lounge, Front Ear]
With his back against the bar to watch the service, Ic cradled a still-clear samarian sunset against his chest, waiting for the end of it to drink.
He was not here to honor the lacunae of quietude left by this life’s absent crew. He could still feel the white embers of their fear if he breathed just-so, and their sour, percussive screams in a once-broken rib. Although he never knew them, their notes in the frantic Nancarrow orchestra of the Front Ear remained noticeably absent on the long way home, and even now. The harrowing abstracts of death-but-not-loss remained nebulous in his mind, sustained, while his heart worked on other things yet unresolved. It probably always would.
He was here (he was here in a suite of memories just beginning to fade) because he had to be— not out of some commissioned duty, and not because they’d called it after him, but because of a soul-deep binding of splintering fates impossible for Ic to ignore. He was for the crew who suffered the Ellipse the first time around. Death was one thing— death let go. Despair was another, digging its claws in all sharpened by grief.
It would have been easy to excuse himself from the event, and he was sure that everyone would have understood. Ic had not been the same since the Alpha Team boarded their past, and even less so when they left to uncertain futures.
Indeed, a darkened voice reminded him, they hadn’t really.
And this was the monument, um, erected in their honor.
There were universes in which they were still alive. There were universes in which he wasn’t, instead, and still others without any of them but Admiral Ellis to insult their memories like… that. He wondered if there would have been a more substantial budget to commission a better artist if the entire crew were devoured by the Ellipse, and then felt horribly for the thought. Oh, but it really was that bad.
Nearby, an unfamiliar-familiar tone belonging to Cerjess, a strange ghost, toasted a casualty of the fifty-seven years. Rin’s prayer followed. And Kaya Som forgave Ic Arbrell of the pretense of his manners. In his own salutation to the man she had asked and he had avoided, he chimed and chugged his drink before it had finished turning orange in the glass.
He never wanted to see that color again.

[ Thea - Observation Lounge, Front Ear] For all she could hear the voices and the beginnings of conversations going around her. Thea found herself transfixed on the memorial programme for a few minutes longer. Grief could be a funny thing and in some ways it reminded her of the loss she'd had and how more profound it seemed whilst remembering those who had been lost. Finally after straightening herself out and deciding that now was probably a good time to get a drink, Thea made her way to the bar. Obviously she wasn't the first one to think of that and didn't blame those already present as she placed her order with the bartender. Despite being on a bit of a health kick well changing her diet slightly and eating less junk or trying to after her operation a few months ago. Thea knew it was one of those occasions where it didn't matter and so didn't feel guilty with her choice of a chocolate mudslide. Creamy, boozy and everything delicious in between, Thea took a decent sip before seeking out Felicity and Judy. Catching the end of the former CO's comment, Thea didn't dare look at the so called monument for fear of breaking down in giggles. " Yeah I can't look at it .. no idea what they were thinking but we'll honour them in a much better way".

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]Hearing Eliska's quiet voice beside her, Syl turned to her with a grateful smile when she saw the glass. "Indeed," she replied simply, as there was nothing to really add. However, she had just lifted her hand to accept the glass when another voice - one more familiar than would normally be to someone of her rank - addressed her by name. Keeping her face passive, she lowered her hand away from the glass and turned to offer the woman an equally friendly smile. "Yes, ma'am." She highly doubted this had anything to do with her parents... Any such news she would have received from her siblings, first. However, Syl certainly wasn't clueless as to what this was actually about. Her gaze shifted back to Eliska briefly. "I'll catch up with you later." Her words had a double meaning - not only would she find her friend after the Admiral was done with her, but she would also be needing more than one drink. Then Admiral Ellis had her full attention once more, as she stood with her back straight and hands folded behind her, waiting to see if they were going to have this conversation here - or if they were going to be going elsewhere.

[Elder Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Observation Lounge]The bar was a popular place to be after the speeches were over. He really should have expected as much. As a few people gathered around him to order their own drinks, Cerjess did his best not to look at any of them. Faces so young, so real, so full of life. However, there was a shade of turquoise he was unable to ignore. A color he hadn't seen in so very long, until he did again. A person whose death had had among the most lasting impacts on his life. Shavan lifted his own glass in agreement, Zak's young voice spoke his own blessing. Cerjess's finger tapped the empty glass that was in the middle of the line he was forming in front of him. "That was yours," he muttered without looking at Shavan, his voice gruff with emotion. Kaya - much younger but always so exuberant - began to speak on Shavan's other side. He was about to answer the question for him, but he wasn't so sure that would be entirely welcome. And he wasn't done remembering yet. So instead, he gestured for another shot to be poured.
