Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Varek and T’Liri were well established and serving honorably within the Ministry of Defense when they had a second child. Their daughter, T’Karra had a mostly uneventful Vulcan childhood where tradition and service were emphasized. She was as bright as any Vulcan but seemed more adept at strategy than science, much like her mother T’Liri; and it was a talent that the proud parent was more than willing to encourage.
Midway through the Dominion War, T’Liri was dispatched with a portion of the VDF to bolster Federation forces in the Tyra system. Though the idea of her mother dying in some far off starsystem unsettled T’Karra, she tamped down the fleeting emotion and bid her farewell. T’Liri was not on one of the fourteen ships that survived.
For a time, T’Karra was unable to face her grief. Instead, she threw herself into her studies at the Vulcan Institute of Defensive Arts. It was easier to do than to cope. Though it took time and reflection, she did eventually confront her pain and move on with a new found determination to serve as her mother had.
Varek’s grief was not so easily overcome. Not wanting to see his daughter suffer the same fate as his bondmate, T’Karra’s father tried to dissuade her from service. Instead, he encouraged her to join the V’Ket, though the ceremonial guard held little interest for her. While she did find value in the traditional military unit, she knew that she would be unable to put her talents to good use.
T’Karra attempted to join the Vulcan Defense Force as an officer. She was by no means an expert but she was surprised when her graduation from the Vulcan Institute of Defensive Arts did not secure her a place in the academy. Failing to receive a reason for the rejection was also unusual. Shortly thereafter, she tried to apply again and was likewise rejected without explanation. It was after her third rejection letter and subsequent refusal to be seen by the recruiting office that she began to suspect that her father was wielding his influence within the ministry to stymie her efforts. When she confronted him, he made no effort to deny the accusation.
She briefly weighed the idea of joining the V’Kor but she surmised that her father may have very well been able to interfere with the hiring process of the Ministry of Security as well. When it appeared unlikely that she would be able to serve on Vulcan, T’Karra contacted her grandfather for assistance and did the logical thing. She left.
Academy/Technical Academy:
IDIC was more challenging in practice than in theory when she found herself having to share barracks, meals, and nearly every waking moment of boot camp around other people. It didn’t help that she was essentially an oddity in a majority human class. The constant barrage of personal queries, over-sharing of their own personal details, and a lack of adequate sleep frayed her nerves as the weeks dragged on.
Karra found that with time, the people around her began to distance themselves from the uncomfortably quiet woman, and while Vulcans prefer their privacy, they are not solitary creatures. Eventually, her own loneliness and curiosity about her fellow recruits’ customs grew and eventually won out over her wariness to associate with such an emotive species. She also discovered that refining her craft, especially marksmanship, proved to be its own sort of meditation when she had very little time for the real thing.
While she was unable to master the art of talking small nor reading people, she did part on agreeable terms with most of her graduating class.

Strengths: Calm under pressure, intensely curious, situationally aware, an accurate shot, thoughtful, and surprisingly kind-hearted.
Weaknesses: Poor swimmer, inability to read non-Vulcanoid species well, a lack of understanding when it comes to social cues, difficulty parsing out euphemisms.
Prejudices: She’s not too keen on serving with species that “lack Vulcan discipline” but she’s giving it a try nonetheless.
Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience: Learning about the death of her mother and the subsequent rift between her and her father that followed.
Your character's best or favorite experience: Playing kal-tol on a warm afternoon with her mother and older brother while her father watched her with something akin to pride in his eyes.
Your character's most crucial experience: Coming to the conclusion that while grief is an emotion and mourning should be illogical, it is sometimes necessary to move on from a loss.
Who is your character's role model and why? Her mother for encouraging her pursuit of knowledge in something other than hard sciences.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
The short sword fell from her trembling hand to the red sands below. T'Karra's knees followed soon after with a quiet thump, the only sound in the dark, empty courtyard besides her ragged breathing. The training dummy before her was rent with savage gashes and no longer fit for use. All it had taken was a single moment of inattention.
She reached up, her fingertips gingerly touching her cheek and coming away wet. The shame she felt at the loss of control burned through her but it paled in comparison to the white hot grief that gripped her now.
Her mother was gone. T'Karra had known it for days but only now did she feel the full weight of it. There was no turning to family and friends for support. Anguish and loss were burdens to be carried alone, not that she had much choice in the matter. Her father had closed himself off, she and her brother were never close, and her mate…
Never had she needed the calm serenity of logic than she did in that moment. The harder she tried to reach for it, the faster it slipped through her fingers like the soft sand beneath her knees.
Her mother was gone.
Do you have previous experience with a role-play forum? I’ve been a part of various play by post forums since 2011. Genres include: hard science fiction, modern crime drama, low fantasy, and post apocalyptic.
What brought you to the Frontier? A renewed interest in Star Trek and play-by-post roleplay.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us? This is my first time roleplaying a Vulcan. I’ve done considerable research but please bear with me as I get a feel for her. My schedule may be hectic so I prefer to be in DTRP status to begin with and see how well I can meet posting requirements from there.
