[ Crewman Layne Bira - Public Replimat, Deck 9, Promenade, Front Ear Station ] Bira rubbed at the back of her neck as she approached the Replimat. Her thoughts were not really on food but she had a break in her workout routine and knew it would only energize her for the later half of her day. When on a break she liked to keep to a schedule, even a modified one, just to keep herself sharp. As a result, Bira was dressed in casual attire rather than her Starfleet uniform. She didn’t have that fresh from the gym look about her though, for she had cleaned up and put on fresh clothes before venturing out onto the promenade. Letting her hand fall to her side, her hair was secured at the nape of her neck by a thin band, her pony tail only a few shades darker than the black of her thin cotton jacket. While she worked out in a black tank top and exercise pants, she knew enough to keep warm and avoid cramping up from catching a chill. Her shoes, however, resembled something better used on a mountain hike than in a gym as they had the look of boots with heavy tread and a possible steel reinforced toe. Bira wasn’t the sort who collected a lot of different pairs of footwear. She didn’t like having to be encumbered in case she had to relocate and preferred to travel light. A light meal would probably do her more good than not too, she decided as she requested her meal from the replicator, ”I’d like a serving of groat cake with syrup of squill, a glass of kava juice and some chilled moba fruit.”Taking the tray of food to one of the vacant tables, she arranged her meal before her and began to nibble away at her late breakfast. Her thoughts ran to her new assignment on the USS Mac and how she would be received. She thought about her daughter’s latest grade reports and how the teen ager seemed to have her uncle wrapped about her little finger. She thought about what sort of stone she should acquire for her next carving. In short she thought about everything except those things that could not be fixed but one must endure. ”Mmmm”, she murmured before taking a sip of the juice and pretty much dismissed the past from her mind once again. [ Ens Ari Kriax - Public Replimat, Deck 9, Promenade, Front Ear Station] Dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt with his usual heavy combat boots the now very awake officer made his way towards the Promenade. He had woken up about two hours ago, gotten some Holosuite time for his morning workout session, having chosen to wake up with some Mok’bara practice followed by a Karate session. He’d hit the gym after something to eat, he’d only managed to get some Holo time by booking such an early session. Of course the Trill had gone home, gotten showered then changed before heading for breakfast. Deciding to just go to the Public Replimat, the easiest option with the smallest queue, he lined up for his turn at the replicator. Truthfully he mostly just wanted a steamed Raktajino. He could never stomach the stuff in the past but thanks to Ebin’s influence he now loved the stuff. It was one intrusion on his identity that he did not despise. He was running a few data sets through his mind, he had some data modelling work he’d promised to do for a colleague back on the Hecla using the Station facilities, when he found himself standing in front of the machine. Switching his attention back to his surroundings he cleared his voice. “Raktajino, hot and a breakfast croissant.” he said automatically, and quickly, as someone coughed not all too subtly behind him as he tried to make his mind up. Picking up his tray he swiftly moved away from the queue as his social anxiety began to thankfully recide from his mind. Glancing around for a vacant table he swiftly, with a sinking stomach, realised there was no such area available. Seeing at least one table with only a single woman sitting at it he approached the table with an easy smile. His plan had been to ask if he could take a seat but, as she looked up at him, his mouth seemed to move involuntarily. “Laynie?”It took a microsecond for the Trill to realise what he’d just said and he flinched as if struck even as his cheeks began to redden. Clearing his throat he realised that memory had not been his own and he quickly drew what he could from the mix-mash of recollection to speak more plainly. “Ah… Crewman Bira. H-Hi, hello, you might not remember but I served on the Hecla. What are you doing here?”This was improper. He shouldn’t be speaking with her. Even as a poor excuse for a host he knew about Reassociation. They should avoid contact altogether. More than that he couldn’t imagine this would be good for Layne, all things considered. “Ah… sorry I’m disturbing your breakfast.” he apologised, beginning to turn away. Layne Bira

Work would have to solve itself, she decided after wondering how she would fit in with the new crew and how long it would take her past to catch up to her again. Bira stretched her legs out underneath the table and slumped slightly against the back of the chair before setting her Kava juice on the table. It was a pretty good thing that she had or she may have ended up on the floor and embarrassing herself to death. It was the soft sound of approaching footsteps that caused her to raise her head, but it was the calling of her name that made the image of the face before her cement in reality. The voice was unfamiliar, no one addressed her by that small term of endearment; no one left alive except Kiax and he and his new host were still assimilating to one another. She had been certain of the fact; even as her eyes stared up into his, Bira found no familiarity there save the glint of her own wishful thinking. The man seemed to catch himself, and that tone of connectivity rapidly left his voice as he stammered out her proper name and rank. Her eyes drifted to his neck instinctively seeking his rank but that was ridiculous being dressed as he was. His question was like a slap in the face, however, for how could she ever forget who this man was? At least he found the faculties of speech while she sat there paralyzed from the surprise. It filled her head that she should have kept tabs on him and then she would not have been taken unawares like this, but that would have defeated the point of no contact. He seemed to come to his senses all on his own, and it ran through her mind to marvel at how well he was holding himself together when she couldn’t even find her voice. Then he ended the encounter and began to walk away. She knew she should just let him go, but there was a pain in her stomach that just would not let up. Her chest felt as though it just might explode. Bolting to her feet, jarring the table enough to cause her juice to splash a bit, she reached out and attempted to lay hold of his elbow with her hand to stop him from leaving. ”No, Kiax, Don’t”, she blurted out but that was not what she wished to say and she shook her head before retracting her hand and trying to address him once again. ”Ari, don’t leave. You are not disturbing me…”, she sighed and raised her left hand to rub at the back of her neck as she often did when a bit stressed out. She wet her lips as though to speak, then shook her head and bit lightly at her upper lip for a moment. Her body sagged a bit in the shoulders as the air seemed to be released from her lungs and then she raised her eyes forcing herself to meet his gaze. ”This isn’t very adult like, is it?”, she asked then smiled and gestured to the table. ”We can do better don’t you think? Sit and eat. Let’s at least be civil over breakfast for a minute?”Civility had nothing to do with it and it was hardly what she wished to say, but she knew there weren’t any words that could make sense of everything and that sometimes you just had to go with what the day delivered. Her arms wrapped around her ribs and she folded her hands into her elbows before saying, ”There is no sense running away scared, do you think? We can do this?”. She nodded her head to indicate she thought they could but her arms holding onto herself that way seemed to belay the bravery and the tone of confidence she affected. Ari Kiax

The voice and light touch halted him. “Kiax.”Unwanted emotion belonging to a dead man surged through him and he forced them down, gritted his teeth as if fighting off the pain from an injury, before allowing that well practiced casual smile to return to his lips albeit a little more timid and unsure than usual. For a moment he weighed the risk vs the simple wish to speak to someone he knew, well sort of, someone knew. Part of him knew. Damn! It was getting worse just being around her. Still this was the perfect time to learn to deal with the new him. Smiling he nodded and took a seat. “Thank you.” he responded with no little gratitude in his voice. “I’m sure we can manage.” he added with awkward warmth. Ari’s fate smile grew into one of genuine mirth as he responded. “No one has ever contributed to me an overabundance of courage but I can surely try not fleeing.” Well that wasn’t true really. Ari himself had numerous commendations and even a medal to his name, Kiax had uncountable merits, but he’d never been comfortable with praising himself and the Joining certainly didn’t help with that. Sipping at his Klingon Coffee he sighed with pleasure as the caffeine flooded through him with it’s wakening touch. Ebin hadn’t even been able to properly wake up until he had his morning raktajino but luckily Ari’s new enjoyment of the beverage hadn’t come with that particular weakness. Although he was, admittedly, less of a morning person than he’d been at the start of the year. Taking a bite of his breakfast he cringed and dropped the food back onto the plate with a look of disgust followed by shock. He glanced at it and realised that it was a filled croissant sandwich filled with various pieces but, most notably, cheese. He hated cheese, why would he… Oh. Glancing at Layne he smiled and shrugged as he wiped at his mouth with a napkin. “Joran liked these.” he explained. “I got… that is to say, I misremembered.”Sighing he sipped at his coffee. “Soo...” he dragged out the term, a habit of D’yer’s, before continuing. “Why aren’t you serving on the Hecla?” The words weren’t out of his mouth too long before he realised she might be on grief leave but, if that was the case, then why would she be in Front Ear station. Hardly an exciting holiday resort and surely she’d want to spend this time with Greela. Layne Bira

The play of emotions she witnessed fighting for dominance over his features was painful to watch; for a moment she was sorry she had inflicted herself upon him like that. Just an instant’s hesitation and he would have made his get-away and left herself scrambling to find her equilibrium on her own. Timidity, however, had never really been her thing. But this… death and not death ending...it was gut wrenching to say the least and she wasn’t used to being so out of her depth. Bira had gone through various stages of rage, grief, acceptance and a whole heaping amount of rage, followed by more grief and then a little more acceptance. That was just to be expected as she never did give her emotions away cheaply. The three of them, D’yar, Kiax, and herself, had chosen to enter into a relationship and while it was true none of them had figured it to end this way, she was more than aware how Ari didn’t choose any of this. Sure, he could have walked away and let Kiax die, but then he would have had to turn into someone he was not to be so indifferent. This was no different. He didn’t ask for these feelings and to foist them on him was insisting he turn into a different person altogether. Relaxing a bit as he took the offered seat, she sat back down and used her napkin to wipe up the bit of juice she had spilled. ”It is a bitter pill”, she muttered as she avoided his eyes and focused on cleaning up the tiny spill, ”this coming to terms with being part of nothing anymore. But I see the necessity”. At least she knew who she was and Ari couldn't even manage awareness enough to order his own food. Bira couldn't even begin to understand how retched that must be. Her eyes glared at the offending croissant before they lifted to seek his. Snorting softly because she was about to be self deprecating, she said, ”It’s truly ridiculous the lengths to which a man will go in order to avoid making a commitment, don’t you think so Ari?”Her sense of humor was a tiny bit macabre but hopefully an appreciation for gallows humor had not been lost during this new blending. She smirked and reached for her juice before taking a sip. Life was rough; what of it? She’d be damned if she walked around on egg shells avoiding anyone, but damn this was about as tough as things could get. It wasn’t until he asked her why she was not on the Hecla that her acting skills were put to the test; all she could hear was D'yar's voice and it was all she could do not to gasp or tear up. Anger pulled her back from the edge for she detested tears in the worst way. This seemed to give her clarity enough to realize it was the second time he had inquired as to why she was here on Front Ear. Setting her drink down, she began to lie her ass off. It was for his own good, this new host had enough on his plate without having to deal with her drama. He hadn’t even trained his entire life to be joined. ”I could ask you the same thing, Ari. I didn’t expect you to be off Trill for some time yet to come.”, she said then shook her head incase she had just insulted him. ”What I mean to say is that you’ve been through alot. I don’t know how you manage.” She leaned back in her chair and crossed her ankle over her right knee. ”As for myself I am waiting to start my new assignment aboard the USS Mac. The Federation says jump and we say how high sir!” Surely her grin would fool him unless Kiax chose to rat her out. Obviously the last place she wanted to be was aboard the Hecla, lying in her bed, alone, dying in her memories night after night. She put in for transfer immediately and it hadn’t taken long for her request to be granted. Ari Kiax

Ari smiled at her joke although in truth he found little humour in it, but perhaps that was just because the memory of the accident was so fresh. It was as if Ari had suffered the fatal injuries himself although, thankfully, the Symbiont had been removed before he could experience death itself. Let one thing remain a mystery. He met her gaze properly, perhaps for the first time, and saw familiar features and well recognised characteristics. A smile hiding hurt and rage. Even as she began to speak he instantly knew she wasn’t being forthright. It was rather unfair really. Ari knew Layne… well intimately. Meanwhile to her he was simply a Science Officer who had happened to serve aboard the same vessel but who had rarely crossed paths, nevermind actually socialising. He also knew her knowledge of the Trill-Symbiont relationship was somewhat limited. D’yer had never really liked talking about the specifics. He had been a powerfully confident man, he had often ignored his status as a Joined Trill and as far as he’d been considered he was simply D’yer Kiax. Like it or lump it. “Of course.” he returned accepting her words. The Mac was a Sovereign Class starship, a crewman of a Nova Class Science Vessel did not simply get “reassigned” to such a more prestigious assignment without cause. He knew her well enough to quickly comprehend the real reason. She had wanted to simply escape the memories aboard the Hecla. It was a fair reason to request a transfer. But why did it have to be this assignment? The universe had a cruel sense of humour. His smile twisted, amused but also somewhat sour, as he considered her question. “No you were quite right the first time. I wasn’t meant to leave Trill for… well I’ve no idea how long they’d planned to keep me but certainly longer than a few months.” he admitted. “The Symbiosis Commission’s Evaluation Board was quite distressed to learn that my preparation for joining had been a ten minute lecture from a Human who’d never operated on a Symbiont before.” he told her with a tinge of amusement as if he took pleasure from the board’s discomfort. Sipping at his coffee he shrugged. “But, frankly, they just weren’t able to help much more beyond counselling sessions and a luxury apartment suite in the Capital.” he explained, somewhat glad for someone to speak to about this other than his own sister. The inherited feeling of familiarity helped. As far as Ari Kiax was concerned she was his friend, although instinctively he knew that wasn’t right. Damn it would have been so much easier if she had only been his… D’yer’s... friend. “This sort of thing rarely happens so there’s no standardised way to prepare someone after the fact. It’s a case of ‘you passed the basic psych exam so you’ll be okay… eventually’.”Time. He laughed softly. “Even I could have said it would take time to integrate 7 other lifetimes into my own. 31 going on 557 as it were.”Realising he’d been speaking rather a lot he cleared his throat. “So Security Detail upon the USS Mac? That must be quite a bit more exciting than patrolling a Science Vessel. Have you been here long?”

She was more than a little paranoid that he possessed more than just impressions but was fully aware of intimacies that had been difficult for her to share...with a man she’d known for years. To have this stranger now be privy to those memories left her more exposed than she had ever been...if he didn’t know everything it would not be unthinkable for that to occur eventually...he had his whole life ahead of him. Did he know that people lived and died in the mining camp upon her word? The pronouncement of a five year old? Perhaps she should have been more appalled but whatever visions of her nudity and the sharing of their bodies he had rattling around in that brain of his, but she had never been permitted privacy or ownership of her own body, not until after her liberation from slavery. No, it was the emotional connections that left her feeling more exposed and violated than ever before in her life. Bira didn’t know much about how all of that worked. Was Kiax just naturally a big blabbermouth or did he have any more control of what bled through that Ari did in what he received from all those prior hosts? Sitting there listening to him just seemed to make her grow angrier and angrier by the minute. Not at him, not at Kiax, not even at D’yar so much...damn him for dying anyway. No, she was pissed at their people. What the hell didn’t they know how to handle these aberrant events? You didn’t just sit around and wait for life to happen, you prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. Certain that someone, somewhere, needed a big boot shoved up their backsides, she sighed heavily and shook her head to clear her thoughts. He seemed to clear his head, or need a change of subject, but she just waved her hand dismissively at the notion she would ignore all this and just talk about how life was on the USS Mac. ”Pft”, she uttered unintelligibly before speaking her mind, ”Eh, it’s an assignment and It’s only been a couple days at best. But this?” Bira had shifted her posture a bit growing more animated so that her forearms rested upon the table. Lifting her forearms up to the elbows she spread her hands wide shaking them a bit jazz hands style. ”But this sounds like a bunch of BS to me. I …”, she cut off stuttering a bit on her words and shook her head before continuing. ”I don’t even know. I mean I do, but I don’t. Like, don’t let those guys bury you. You are the one in charge, so lead.” She stood up and walked around behind his chair pivoting a bit toward the replicator. ”For starters, why don’t you go order something to eat that YOU like?” Folding her arms over her chest, she shifted her weight to her rear facing leg and waited semi-patiently for him to get up and show all those personalities exactly who he was. “It’s an assignment” he parroted jokingly with a smile. “Being assigned to not only to the exciting frontier of Federation territory but also aboard a Sovereign Class Starship, the most advanced vessel in the Fleet.” he stated with a grin, the position was one any Ensign or Crewman would kill for. However he tilted his head in obvious confusion at her next words looking genuinely unsure about what they were talking about. “Those guys?” he asked with confusion. “You mean the Evaluation Board?” But that didn’t make sense in context. Wait. Frowning he added with obvious surprise in his voice. “You mean my past lives?” From the tone of his voice Ari clearly didn’t understand what she meant. Glancing at the replicator he tsked and shrugged. “Honestly I don’t even eat much for breakfast usually. All I need is coffee and the Klingons make the best coffee at all.” Tag: Layne Bira

When Ari refused to let her down play the assignment and make him the object of conversation, she just nodded her head and sighed. True enough it was a prime assignment but her irritation at the council for not having contingency plans in case of unusual circumstances seriously pissed her off. Images of the incident, the rush to get Kiax into his new host, no one with any competency in such matters on board, nearly losing them both… well she had been shunted out of the way once Kiax was removed from D’yar and they tended to the living while she sat with the dead. She was pissed at Starfleet too for not having better medical data on hand with not one but two Trills on board. The doctor should have been educated better as to these crew member’s specific needs. ’You’d think a research vessel would have given that detail a bit more thought.’, she inwardly fumed. Inhaling, she smoothed her hands down her front and moved back to take her seat as she endured the resurgence of emotions surrounding D’yar’s death. ”Yes, I was meaning your past lives, but I’m sure you hardly need advice from me”, she clarified and immediately squashed the impulse to object about his not eating. She didn’t want to impose herself on him, in fact she was strictly forbidden as part of his tradition, and she couldn’t be sure of her own motivations for they were too altered by her emotions. Perhaps the best course of action for now was to act like they were strangers and let their interactions be guided by those social rules. What she needed was a benign topic and she had one that would sate her curiosity as well. ”But what about you, Ari. Why are you here?”, she asked while trying to imagine they were complete strangers. Her tight lipness might have been annoying if Ari wasn’t already so familiar with her behaviour. Setting his cup aside Ari smiled and shrugged. “It’s more complicated than just imposing myself upon them… also that’s not really possible.” he explained tapping a finger against the table before deciding to continue. “There are very few symbionts in comparison to our overall population and as you can imagine alot of people want to be joined.” he said with a slight shake of his head. Such aspirations had never crossed Ari’s mind, he even had the academic sort of record needed for application after graduating the Academy but he’d had no interest in such things. Ari had always been happy being himself. “Well those who pass and go into the programme spend quite some time learning how to make sure the experiences of the Symbiont don’t overcome them.”Ari spread his hands out in front of him with a dry chuckle. “Obviously I’m just learning as I go. However the bottom line is that there is no real me and them. After the joining we become integrated at the most base level, I am those previous lives although I am not them.” he explained before pausing and realising that that wasn’t the most clear explanation. “It’s like a piece of software I guess. I’m a later rendition built upon previous iterations of Kiax.” he paused again and chuckled. “Sorry, it’s a good thing I don’t teach at the Commission.”“One moment please.” he said getting up and moving over to the replicator once the line had completely vanished. Moving up to the machine he reordered another hot raktajino and this time a plain croissant. Returning to his seat he sipped at his new cup of coffee and sighed with pleasure as he took a bite of his pastry. “Anyway… as for why I’m here. I got sick of twiddling my thumbs on Trill, despite the pleasant accommodations, and I told them I was done. They could do little to stop me really, on one hand they can’t afford to drive away any joined Trill too much but apparently we Kiax’s have a bit of a habit of doing what we want so they just accepted it.” he told her with a grin. “I wanted something away from any previous assignment to make the integration period less confusing so I requested a Frontier assignment. I guess my record was considered impressive enough to be given an exciting placement like this.”Leaning back in his chair, cupping the hot drink in his hands, he chuckled. “Although I don’t actually report in for a few days so I’ve no idea if I’ll even be on the ship. Maybe they’ll just assign me to the station. Also I’ll likely have to meet a doctor to see if I am getting phased in or not. It’s pretty much up to the medical office and the commanders I think.” Layne Bira

His words drew her focus as he explained and as he did so she wondered why she was ever worried about him losing his individuality? D’yar never would have spoken about these things and that Ari was now? Well, she couldn’t help but be enthralled to hear his explanations. The squall syrup on her groat cake had no doubt gone cold, but she had lost her interest in food for the moment anyway. A few things stood out for her, causing her to make a list of questions in her head. He didn’t seem to share the popular desire to join as most from his world possessed, at least that was her opinion based on him shaking his head when he explained about joining being a coveted state and that he hadn’t trained for bonding. Then he went on to explain how there was no longer a real him. It left her a bit dumbfounded and when he apologized for his lack of being able to explain properly she set her foot back on the floor and leaned forward to say, ”Oh no, I could follow along well enough.”She leaned back appalled by the apparent sacrifice Ari had made, and for what? There was the sanctity of life and she could see giving everything to save someone you loved, family, a comrade in arms but a complete stranger? No, she realized. That was not right. The symbionts had been with the Trill for generations and their connectivity might well touch upon every family in their world by now. They were not strangers in the least and their passing would be viewed on a different level of grief than she felt capable of understanding. Not truly, at least no more than she really understood what it must be like to blend and become one with another being. Her eyes looked to her plate and as suspected the cakes were ruined, at least to her way of thinking. Instead she sampled some of the fruit while she waited for him to come back with his selection. The smell of his drink hit her senses and she chuckled softly, ”You weren’t kidding about the Raktajino were you?”Finishing her fruit while he spoke, she remained silent for the most part save when he spoke of Kiax’s doing what they pleased. ”Yeah, that part is actually no secret.” D’yar had a pretty strong personality that had been hard to resist. It pleased her to know that Ari was not so easily held in check either. Surely they would be alright. But then he went on to speak of what prompted him to choose his assignment and just her being here could make all his plans go up in smoke. Bira was about to apologize for crossing paths during such a critical time when he brought up the doctor’s consult she wondered just how critical a time it was? Could just be the regular assignment process, all the exams and formalized meetings. However, he was returning to duty, even a distant and unrelated duty, earlier than usual. ”That all sounds amazing, Ari. I mean if you are on your own then yeah, why not get back out into the thick of things and get busy living?”, she said with sincerity in her voice. ”It’s a great assignment too. Sure to be loads for a science officer to do on the frontier. I have to admit I am hesitant, though, about being a source of difficulty during this time in your life.” She felt like someone in division headquarters needed to go on report. The whole reason they both did not stay with the Hecla was to get away from each other. Ari Kiax

Eating the rest of his pastry he nodded along to Layne as she spoke. It was nice to have someone familiar to speak to, someone he felt close to, albeit there were some extra unpleasantly strong emotions in there but he’d have to deal. Thankfully she hadn’t been D’yer’s wife or something. That would have been completely impossible to deal with. He chuckled softly at the comment about his caffeinated hot beverage. “You’re not wrong.” he commented raising the mug in her direction. “One of the changes I’m actually pleased about.”Sighing heavily he put aside his drink and crossed his arms while putting on a small but genuine smile. “I admit your presence here was a… surprise and it’s not… easy... however I’m sure it’s not exactly pleasant for you either. However I didn’t leave the Hecla to try and avoid you. I left it because there were far too many memories mixed up there. Too many people. Two sets of memories for the same place was just too much to deal with.” he told her. Leaning into his chair he tilted his head backwards to look up at the roof. “But this is nice too. I know you and D’yer where… more than just close friends but i feel like all his friends are mine too, I feel the same for all the friends I remember, even with things as jumbled up as they are.” he looked back down and met her gaze. “So I’ll leave it up to you. If you want to be friends we can give it a go, if not I’ll make sure to stay out of your way.”Taking up the hot cup again Ari sipped at his coffee and began to redden slightly as he realised how much he’d said, a little more than he’d meant. Since when had he become so open? Or maybe it wasn't him… maybe it was Layne? Clearing his throat he decided to move on to the less personal topic. “Oh definitely! I mean I loved the Hecla, she was a wonderful science ship, but an actual exploration mission? There’ll be a lot to do out here. unchartered regions? It’s a Stellar Cartographists dream come true… if I get assigned to that department. I honestly have no idea where or what I’ll be doing.” With a grin he added. “They may stick me in data processing or just decide I’m not ready for active service at all.” Layne Bira

Arching an eyebrow when he attributed the love of the Klingon drink to his joining, she chuckled and asked spontaneously, ”Have there been any other changes that you enjoy, like”, she paused in her words to search her mind for something reasonable then said, ”oh I don’t know, some new skill? Like”, she sat up and chuckled softly before saying, ”the ancient art of ribbon candy making? You know, something mundane?”She was putting a light spin on things when really his words had struck notes that were a little too clear. She’d always known that she put a bit too much importance on their relationship, at least more than D’yer had. Clearly. Running into her had been a surprise, and not easy. While his assessment of her experience was termed unpleasant, to paraphrase a smidge. On the one hand, she had left the Hecla over D’yer and on the other he had not. On the one hand she was being unfair and petty making everything about herself even though she understood how grievously it was not. The threat of losing your mind, your soul was the greater struggle; greater than grief over the death of a loved one. And she had loved him. She’d loved twice in her life and both were now dead. Only yeah, a large part of D’yar was sitting right there across the table from her right now. There was no him or symbiote or how ever many past hosts. It was as Ari said, only the one of them now. Funny, that is what D’yar always said too. He was D’yar and that meant D’yar, take it or leave it. And on the other hand she knew what the loss really meant. Awkward words spoken among semi strangers based on what, half impressions or full on immersion memories? She had no idea how it worked and to ask just felt intrusive and rather pointless. She didn’t need to know and could just move on. Sometimes she wondered if Starfleet had made her soft. It was like she wanted to hurt. There was no sense in re-examining everything based on some passing remarks. Bira knew, however, that her first instincts in calling out for him to stop were spot on. It was the right thing to do and she was glad to hear Ari voice his desire to keep a friendship between them. She did have to quirk a bit of a questioning grin at him when she thought she saw his cheeks flush. Her confusion was genuine but only because she frequently missed small subtleties and innuendos. Humor once more came to her rescue and she dove right into the deep end. ”Oh sure. I think making our own friendship would be a good thing.”, she said then shifted in her seat to cross her right leg over the left at the knee. ”But if you need a break, you know, if being around me gets to be too much, you just speak up. I know I am quite a lot of woman to take.” She grinned letting him know just about how serious she was being. The change of topic was a good notion though and she didn’t do anything else to derail them back into dangerous waters. He really became animated when he talked about work, which just made her smile. ”I doubt very seriously if they are going to waste you on data processing when any non-comm can do the same. Unfortunately, you don’t see many of those that can do your work in return.” Still, she was gentle in tone knowing full well the different thoughts that went through a person’s mind when taking on a new assignment. She had basically spent the whole day trying not to worry herself into a sleepless night. Still, might there be medical issues that could decide the issue? ”Those medical evaluations…”, she said in all seriousness, ”do you anticipate anything that would keep you from active duty?” Ari Kiax

“Many.” he admitted with a smile. “About 588 years worth of preferences, experiences and everything else all jumbled together.” he told her with a smile. “I’ve found mornings are a bit more difficult than they used to be. I’ve a sweeter tooth than I thought I did. As for skills… engineering, botany… anything that requires hand-eye coordination as well. I’d been warned I might become more clumsy but it seems the joining rather improved that weakness of mine.”Leaning back in his chair he frowned for a moment. “But mundane?” he asked for a moment as he tried to think for a moment, it wasn’t just sieving through the memories but making sure they weren’t just his own. Before an amused smile crossed his face. “Archery.” he said at last. “Joran was very much a Terraphile, he picked up all sorts of Human interests and I feel like I’ve inherited more than my fair share of them but the one that sticks out to me is Archery. I sometimes use the Holosuites for practice, it’s quite relaxing really if a somewhat useless skill for anything besides enjoyment.” He did not however mention the Karate, the kickboxing, the Mok'bara or anything else that D’yer had shown a lot of interest in. Swirling the dark hot beverage in his mug he smiled a little. “You know it’s odd. I have always been a rather… talented individual. But those talents lay in the realms of academics. I could have qualified for entry into the Symbiosis Institute after graduation from the Academy, my grades were easily enough, but I never had any interest despite certain societal and familial expectations.” he said softly in a moment of introspection. “However other than that I was a rather average officer. Yet, now, I find that I probably have more experience, training and skills than most my superiors in Starfleet.”He glanced up and grinned, realising what he’d said. “That is if I can ever sort out these experiences and integrate them properly.”Chuckling slightly he waved her comment away. “Ah fear not, if there’s one thing Ari Katren has always been capable of is the utilisation of bluntness when required. That hasn’t changed since I became Kiax.”Finishing off his coffee the Trill chuckled. “Oh you’d be surprised. Usually they need a few Data Scientists and Engineers within the Data Processing Teams and the Premiers I graduated with in the Academy would point me that way. I do quite enjoy Mathematical and Statistical work, and research, but I’m rather hoping I get to do a turn in Stellar Cartography. I missed the chance on the Scott and Hecla but a frontier posting is the perfect place for such an assignment. Mapping the unknown.” he shook his head with a smirk at his own excited chatter. “What about you? Any postings you’re hoping for in particular?”Putting the empty cup aside he folded his arms again and considered the medical question. It was one he’d been wondering about himself. “Possibly. If my sense of self isn’t strong enough there’s a good chance it’d be considered too unsafe to allow me to operate fully in my capacity as an active officer. Then who knows how else I’ve been affected by the joining? For example I find I have Arachnophobia now whereas before I had no problem with spiders. Anari’s fault no doubt, she was terrified of anything with more than four legs. But if I’d picked up some rather more worrying phobias, say astrophobia or something else that makes life in space impossible then that would rather swiftly end my career.”Shrugging slightly he made a show of not being too concerned about it all. “At the very least I imagine they’ll have been seeing a counselor on a frequent basis, probably a light workload and perhaps reduced hours to begin with.” Tags: Layne Bira

”Ha… I guess there would have to be.”, she said after his remark about 588 years of preferences. She couldn’t even begin to imagine how convoluted things must get. Nodding her head as he spoke about his mornings and such waited while he tried to come up with something mundane to tell her about. ”Now archery is something I don’t know anything about. I mean I know what it is, naturally, but I have never used a bow before. Relaxing though?”, she ceased speaking to lay her arm at the table’s edge and drum her fingers in thought for a moment. ”Well I’d never really considered that aspect of it before. Interesting.”, she said then fell silent to listen to him speak on his talents. There it was again, his whole life being derailed by suddenly becoming joined. He hadn’t wished to lead that sort of life and it didn’t sound like his family was very pleased by his choice. She wondered why he was not with them back on Trill but perhaps they were over bearing and he needed more space in which to adjust. She knew these pressures existed, but her parent’s expectations were more survival based; not dying in the mining camp was a successful goal. Bira chuckled, however, when he talked about his current qualifications. ”Well I guess you know how the Vulcan’s in Starfleet feel? Whatever they call it.” She knew Vulcans claim not to indulge in emotions but most she had met were fairly high strung. She still felt like they wouldn’t waste his talents in data processing regardless of the need for analysts in the field. ”Well I hope that you get to indulge some. It couldn’t hurt to let someone know what sort of goals you have. You never know, they may just be looking for someone to add to the team.”Bira knew that she had really limited herself when it came to her career, what skill she wished to learn, how she wanted to progress through the ranks of Starfleet. ”Oh Ari. I can tell you that going from an officer to enlisted wasn’t much of a career choice. I hadn’t really made any goals beyond securing my daughter’s safety and regaining entry into Starfleet. Most of my goals have just been centered around base survival.” She laughed slightly and then commented, ”I guess it’s way past time to stop living like a refugee.”She was a bit relieved to know he wasn’t experiencing any overt health issues but she had to acknowledge there were quite a lot of medical criteria an officer had to meet just besides their physical well being. ”It sounds like for the most part you won’t have to worry about those issues Ari. But if you do experience some difficulties Starfleet is the place to be. Lots of resources to draw upon to help out.”She was pretty much done with her food and stacked her dishes together in anticipation of clearing the table but she really didn’t want their visit to end. Maybe they could come up with something else to do, provided he wished to and didn’t have other obligations later. Best to just find out and not be too timid to ask. ”So, what do you have planned for the rest of the day? Perhaps if you are not busy we can explore or something?” To her credit she didn’t roll her eyes though she sounded pretty cheesy to herself just then and was feeling a bit embarrassed. Ari Kiax
