2 weeks after S1M9 & S1E10 After Changes in Command Before A Front Ear Celebration 2 weeks before S2M1 & S2E1[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Commanding Officer's Office]The last few weeks had been so deeply focused on putting out fires, that there had been little room for planning ahead. In fact, Judy had even exempted Harmon from their previous weekly meeting. But now, as the new Captain, she felt empowered to look longer and harder at the way they'd been doing things, and maybe even to make a few course-corrections (within her mandate, of course - nothing insubordinate to the Admirals). Rather than the usual meeting, she'd summoned Harmon for a power lunch in her office, and baked a pizza. The office was still the same office, with the same furniture. All that had changed was that Judy and Mabel (sitting in the antechamber, as always) now each had ascended one rank.

All that had changed was that Judy and Mabel (sitting in the antechamber, as always) now each had ascended one rank. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Commanding Officer's Office]Though they often butted heads, Harmon was actually pleased Eastman had been promoted. She was competent and a good officer. And he trusted her, even if she'd make the wrong choices sometimes, he knew she was trustworthy and reliable. A lot had happened the past few weeks, interrogation of the Nyberrite officers had concluded and he'd cleared them of any potential charges over the attack against the Hera. Meanwhile, things on Caldonia had continued to get worse. He was glad to finally have the chance to update her on what has been happening given their last meeting was cancelled. "Good morning, Captain. Lieutenant," he said with a smile and curt nod towards Mabel. He hadn't spoken to either of much since the latest incident with the Alliance. He wondered just what Mabel had said about the little squabble with young Lieutenant Commander Quinn.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Commanding Officer's Office]"Did you sleep in?" Mabel teased, at Harmon's bidding her and the Captain "good morning". She had come to feel sufficiently at ease to treat senior officers more as peers, so long as Judy was around, particularly after both her patron and herself had been rewarded with a promotion. That, and Harmon was an easy target. "Mabel is feeling a little jealous today," Judy cut in, with a sly smile, and led Harmon into the main office. "Young man, I've always thought pineapple on pizza is a crime against nature, and I still do. The fact that you eat it really makes me question your judgement," she lectured, putting on a fake indignancy and pretentiousness. "However, in light of just how hard you've worked lately, I thought it only fair to indulge your heretical tastes."She lifted the lid of one of the two pizza boxes on her table, to reveal a medium-sized pie with pineapple. The marinara sauce, cheese, and dough were all perfectly made, only to be sullied by the tropical fruit. The other box, which she also opened, contained a more appropriate pizza, with a 5-cheese blend, alfredo sauce (instead of marinara), fresh tomato slices on the top, and basil.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - CO's Office]"I need my beauty sleep, Mabel," he retorted. Her snark reminded him of Chloe. Perhaps that was why the two of them seemed to get on so well together. As he followed them into the main office he was stunned by what he saw. An actual good pizza for once. "Pineapple is the one true way," he joked, playing into the 'heretical' thing, as he picked up a slice and took a bite. "You really ought to try it. Promote your sense of taste as it were," he was aware that was a bad joke, but he was too busy enjoying it for now.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"Don't quit your day job yet, young man," Judy dismissed Harmon's comment, relishing in this lighthearted banter. It reminded her of her younger days, when she was "only" in her 50s and not yet a senior officer. Not to mention, it also evoked her civilian youth, where rank wasn't even a thing. "Now, let's start with the Nyberrites. How's our investigation coming along?"Judy had taken a strategic step back, leaving it to Harmon to manage the search for facts while she managed the rest of the station, and so that she could manage the diplomatic fallout if there was any. It was a prescient decision, since as the CO, she would have to deal with diplomacy anyway.

Harmon shook his head and smiled as she dismissed his sagely suggestion. Alas, it was then time for business. "They gave us access to their pilots like the promised, but we didn't get anything new or useful from them," he said disappointedly. "They didn't arm nor fire their weapons, something knocked out their systems. Feedback from something within the ship they thought. When they recovered the saw the Hera was damaged and immediately called for aid. Their flight data logs corroborate this," his tone betrayed the frustration he was feeling. "They could have doctored the logs and coached their pilots...but I don't think that's what's happened. I think they're telling the truth. I'm not convinced the Alliance is innocent, but these pilots seem to be...Vasser too," he said reluctantly. "She was going to make the alleged saboteur avalible for a join interview with me, but he apparently killed himself."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy took a slice of the non-heretical pizza and enjoyed it as Harmon spoke. She was allowed her small pleasures as she dealt with the security of the Federation, wasn't she? "I think you're right," she said once he finished speaking. "Given what we saw, with the Tholian signatures, it's hard to believe the pilots did this."Down the list they went. "As for Vasser, she's still a little Starfleet on the inside. She also has ambition, more ambition than I think is healthy. So between how much this hurt the Federation - which I think she still loves - and how much being smack-dab in the middle of this hurt her own prospects, I just don't see how she'd initiate such a thing."With Vasser, Judy believed, it was clearly much more ambition than anything else. As far as Judy could tell, the younger woman left the fleet's ranks because she was denied this command; the great irony being that, had Vasser played the long game (as Judy Eastman had done), she might be sitting in the center chair right now. "Admittedly, Vasser duped me once before."For all her kvetching about her fading memory, and her capacity for forgiveness, Judy did not allow herself to forget.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Commanding Officer's Office]"Vasser is only one individual in a sizeable group of mercenaries. She may be complicit, directly or indirectly, she may not be. What is clear is someone involved with the Alliance was behind this. So far they found, or at least claim to have found, the perpetrator of this attack, however there is no way that they were acting alone. They had orders, suppliers, goals," he explained. "Even if Vasser is duping us again, working with us is more likely to give us some insight into what is going on than if we freeze her out. From the outside perspective, the most logical and straightforward response to our Commodore being nearly killed by the Alliance would be for us to cut them out, act more hostile. Most likely that was their short term goal. Why and to what end I have no clue," he theorised.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"We'll have to keep looking. I figure wherever we find a money trail - weird transactions, sudden windfalls - we'll find answers."Even the "post-money" society of the Federation liked its money very, very much, and every moneyed society had its corruption issues. The Nyberrites, a mercenary outfit, doubtless had their own excess of greed. Someone, somewhere, had likely been paid off. "Moving on from the Nyberrites, I believe we have a Caldonian-shaped, Caldonian-sized issue on our horizon."As rightfully upset as Judy was by Jeren's terrorist attack - and she was upset - she was clear-eyed about the horrors inflicted by the Caldonians that had motivated him. This was not an easy neighbor to deal with.

This was not an easy neighbor to deal with. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - CO's Office]"Yes...I expect things over there will get worse before they get better," he said. The little intelligence he had been able to collect combined with Jeren's words and his knowledge of how these sorts of oppressive apartheid regimes usually ended all suggested as much. "From what I can gather, Jeren's tribe has replaced him with Baram. A moderate. Jeren was not trusting of him, viewed him as a collaborator. He warned of instability, some would want revenge for Jeren's incarceration, some would seek rapprochement with the Caldonians. I've struggled to get much intelligence, save someone who reached out to me yesterday. I've verified the information. He goes by the code name 'Serlat', it's a Kurjarian word for fillibuster or something. He's leaked the Kaa memos, internal Caldonian government documents that describe torture techniques used against Kurjarians and dissidents and outlines how to spin acts of torture publicly," he pressed his PADD a couple of times and then handed it to Judy.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy shook her head. She wasn't inclined to take Jeren's judgement (at least, not without a grain of salt) on Baram. As for Serlat... well, the Kaa memos story made the front page of Judy's favored New York Times, although the name Serlat hadn't. "I'm familiar with the memos, more than I'd like to be," she said, setting the PADD aside. "I think we should give this Baram character a shot. Maybe he'll be the right leader, at the right time, to come to a deal with the Caldonians," she speculated, optimistically. Except, the optimism wasn't her own. She was just now connecting this news from Harmon, with directives from above. "At least, that seems to be what the Admirals - and the politicians - think. They're sending us out there in February to mediate talks between the free tribesmen - evidently Baram - and the Caldonian foreign office."Judy wanted to be optimistic, but the cynical take (that the Caldonians wanted to have pretend talks to win some goodwill they lost from the Kaa memos) was right there.
