[ T’Laara - Deck 26] After a few more minutes of working, T’Laara checked her PADD again. The responses to her message were negative; no one who was working on the M-240385J projects had moved the missing alien plant. That was strange indeed. It still may not be any great mystery, but she couldn’t just sit by and lose one of their samples. And so T’Laara felt compelled to investigate. She pulled up all the data on that particular sample, reviewing the research that the team had been pursuing. So far they had not been able to discern anything especially valuable about it, but it did have some unusual chemical levels. Coming to a decision, she got up and walked over to the door. This deck was regularly patrolled by security. Perhaps a simple inquiry was warranted, and would settle the matter. The corridor was empty, except for Sir Doug, who also appeared to be just returning from lunch. And, as expected, a Starfleet security officer had just turned the corner. T’Lara approached the other young woman first. “Excuse me. Can you tell me if anyone else has gone into the lab in the last half hour? Or if you have seen anything unusual?” She glanced back at the El-Aurian. Anything else unusual, of course. Though if the security officer hadn’t seen anything, she would ask him next. tag Jovireh Velal , soft tag Dugris Zaman [PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor]The Petty Officer turned the corner just in time to see one of the Vulcan scientists step into the corridor just a few paces from her. About to give a standard greeting as she passed by, she stopped when the woman faced her and addressed her. Jovireh shook her head with an apologetic smile. "No, but I've only just arrived on this deck a few minutes ago. Is something wrong?" No sooner had she asked the question, than the lights in the corridor began to flicker. Her brow furrowed. That would definitely count as something unusual, though she didn't feel the need to state the obvious. Instead, she tapped her com badge. =A="Velal to Engineering. Seems we have a power surge in the lighting on Deck 26, if you have anyone available."=A= Her attention shifted back to the Vulcan, and the El-Aurian across from her. "Know of any experiments going on that might be draining the power?" She asked them casually, more to give the engineering team an idea where to start when they arrived by ruling out the obvious possible causes. [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Deck 26]"Several experiments, actually."Sir Doug had many talents, but talking was the greatest of them all. He held the sandwich in his hand, gesticulating in a gentle, but chaotic, manner. "T'Shrek[fn]The retired Lt. T'Shrek was Quinn's predecessor as Chief of Science[/fn] is developing fancy kitchen utensils for Brack that he can stick in the EPS grid, for reasons all his own. He's probably going to stiff her soon. Lieutenant Orosa is doing something in particle physics. Oh, and Ensign Joel is working on a plant-based fire extinguisher. He's in early testing stages."Of course, it was far more interesting that Ensign Joel was alleged to be sleeping with a superior, but it wasn't to the point... No, it was worth mentioning. "Although it's possible Ensign Joel is making out with Lieutenant Harris in a utility closet again."The El-Aurian took a big chomp of his sandwich.
Tag Shavan Th'zhaar , Jovireh Velal [ T’Laara - Deck 26] Before T’Laara could ask anything else, or elaborate on what had prompted her questions, there was a sudden power fluctuation which caught the attention of both the security officer and Sir Doug. The latter, having joined them, posed some interesting theories as to the cause… including speculating on the entirely irrelevant affair between two of the crew. T’Laara raised one eyebrow. “That is indeed possible, as neither of them were in the lab just now.” As for the question of the energy surge, she had no other ideas. Certainly nothing she had been doing would have caused it. She turned back to the security officer. “I do not recall anything else that would have caused a power fluctuation."
It may not be related, but she had come to talk to them for a reason. “I was wondering if you had seen anything because one of the plant specimens the botany team was working with appears to be missing. It is one of the samples from Planet M-240385J.” Perhaps Sir Doug would have an idea as to where it might be. Jovireh Velal Dugris Zaman [PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor]Sir Doug was the first to respond, and she felt her own eyebrow lift in an expression that mirrored T'Laara's, uncertain whether or not to believe that particular list of experiments. As for the Ensign and Lieutenant making out in a utility closet... while it might be making their power surge, she doubted they'd be able to affect the lights on the entire deck. Jovireh also couldn't help the smug thought that at least she wasn't the only one physically involved with a superior officer - at least she was the last he was on the station - and at least they were professional enough to keep it off duty. As expected, the Vulcan gave a more serious response, and Jov's brow furrowed slightly at the mention of the missing specimen. Things going missing from the science labs were always concerning... though she couldn't think of why a plant would suddenly disappear. The planet designation didn't immediately register with her, since jumbles of numbers tended to all sound alike to her. "That is strange... Was there anything special about this sample?" Plants were far from her expertise, but she knew they didn't just get up and walk away. If someone moved it... It would help to know why. Hearing another voice down the corridor, the Petty Officer turned to see Kaya approaching, and gave her a welcoming smile. She'd heard the Trill had returned to the station, after having quite an adventure on the Klingon homeworld, and it was good to see her holding herself together again. Jov had been concerned with the state Kaya had been in the last she'd seen her... then finding out she'd gone missing... but it was far from her place to say anything about it. Knowing that she was likely tired of hearing such things as 'welcome back', and 'I'm glad you're okay', the hybrid instead simply smiled and pretended like nothing had happened. "Lights started flickering across the entire deck a couple minutes ago," she filled the engineer in on why she called. As if to prove her point, the lights flickered once more, before shutting off entirely, casting the entire deck into darkness for a moment before the backup power kicked in and the dimmer lights illuminated the corridor.

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Deck 10, Sickbay]Hearing the door hiss open, Riyo glanced over and offered a smile at the man he recognized as one of the other doctors on the station. They hadn't directly worked together before, but occasionally relieved each other. That was before the El-Aurian had taken paternity leave. He didn't give a second thought to the other man's haggard appearance. Over the past few months Riyo had been lucky to be able to ease himself into the family routine Leanna had already established with the kids... And he still found it to be quite chaotic and overwhelming at times. He could only imagine how chaotic it was in a household with newborn triplets. "Dr. Trenzal, right?" Riyo asked, hoping he remembered the name correctly. There was a flash of relief in his eyes at the other doctor's presence. The El-Aurian was the only medical professional on the station Riyo knew for a fact had more years of experience in the field than he did. Rather, his own three decades paled in comparison. It seemed the Prophets didn't expect him to sink or swim in his mental recovery just yet. "It's been a quiet day so far, just a sprained ankle from a holosuite accident and a burned hand from an engineering malfunction." He filled Alec in on the earlier part of the shift, hoping to give the man a chance to relax and catch his breath.
Tag Ozu Saya (Alec) [ Dr. Alec Trenzal - Sickbay] Alec slowed down and took a deep breath when the other doctor greeted him. He offered a more real, if tired, smile and nodded. ' Trenzal, yes. And you're Dr. Paawin,' he said, eyes narrowing slightly as he dredged the name out of his tired brain. ' Glad to hear it's quiet. I hope it stays so,' he said ruefully. ' I'm not sure I have the brain power to handle more than a sprained ankle. I probably should have taken a couple more months off, but my wife and I were both starting to go a little stir crazy.
'I know you're with Leanna, right? So you've stepped into being a father recently, too.' Alec knew the other man could probably sympathize. ---------- Tag Jovireh Velal [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Deck 10, Sickbay]Riyo nodded in affirmation of his name, grinning a little at the other man's relief over it being a quiet day. "Great! You take the sprains, I'll take the lacerations, and we'll activate the EMH for anything else," he joked. He could only imagine having to explain that to Dr. Baker when she got back from providing relief from a natural disaster... Hearing Alec mention Leanna and the kids, Riyo couldn't hide his smile even if he tried. "Yeah, but I was lucky enough to miss the up-all-night stage." As much as he joked about joining the family at the perfect time, he'd recently realized that he would do anything to have been there from the beginning. He had missed so much... and he was missing even more since he couldn't be around as often as he wanted until he got his head on straight. At least he was able to see Aven take his first steps, so he hadn't missed all the milestones.

[ T’Laara - Deck 26] It wasn’t long before an engineer appeared in response to the call, and introduced herself as Kaya Som. The Trill looked familiar from the group expedition to Kerelia several months ago, but it had been some time since they crossed paths. “T’Laara,” she repeated her name in turn, for the others' benefit as well. While Kaya Som inquired about the power surge, T’Laara turned back to the question of the missing plant. Sir Doug seemed to know of the planet the specimen had come from, though she might have phrased the description differently. “Indeed. I am certain that the specimen was there in the lab when most of the team, including myself, left for lunch break. That was approximately half an hour ago. I recently returned and noticed that the plant was gone, but the container and soil it had been in was still there where it had been left. All of the other botanists claim not to have taken it.”She considered Velal’s question of whether there was anything special about it. “The specimen was primarily of interest due to its source.” So far, they had not yet discerned anything about it that would be particularly remarkable to non-scientists. “It is highly unlikely that it has been eaten by a PooDoo. Or that it will eat anyone’s arm.”Jovireh Velal Dugris Zaman Kaya Som

Her headache threatened to return just thinking of that particular away mission. "The plants weren't as dangerous as the insects... But it wouldn't hurt to use caution," she advised Kaya. "Don't touch anything that has thorns." She rotated her wrist absently, remembering the way the brambles had caught her. While the insects were the ones that literally chased them off the planet... That plant had been the only thing to draw blood. Her attention returned to T'Laara as she gave more details about the disappearance. It certainly sounded like someone had removed it... But she couldn't think of why someone other than the botanists would do so. "I'll do a sweep of the area, see if I recognize it in one of the other labs. With luck someone just moved the wrong sample." At least the backup power was holding up. Speaking of which... It was rather odd that there would be two unusual occurrences on the same deck in such a short time span... She tapped her com badge again. "Velal to Security. We've got some strange things happening on Deck 26. Nothing to raise an alarm about, but I can use an extra set of eyes down here." Com traffic had been quiet that day, so there was likely plenty of Security personnel looking for something to do.

Or that it will eat anyone’s arm.”[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor]Jovireh's expression fell slightly when Sir Doug commented on the plant's origin.

"I'll stay out of your way," he announced. The ancient man took a few steps down the dark hallway, until he found a sufficiently discreet place to stand and wait. After all, it wouldn't do to bother Starfleet during a critical situation, even if it was the relatively not uptight Kaya.

[Lt.
Tag Ozu Saya [ Dr. Alec Trenzal - Sickbay] Alec snorted, covering his eyes for a second as he realized that he might just be too sleep deprived to do any serious work. Great Bird of the Galaxy, I really hope we don't have any emergencies. Then Riyo went on and Alec couldn't help the foolish grin that took over his face. ' It's worth it. Absolutely. When they look up at you with their little faces and recognize you for the first time... First smiles, first laughs, even the first fart. Which was so funny to us at the time that we couldn't speak for twenty solid minutes.
I just don't recommend waiting as long as I did. Most El-Aurians my age have had children, grandchildren, even great-grandchildren.' ---------- Tag Jovireh Velal [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Deck 10, Sickbay]Riyo recognized the look on the other man's face as similar to the one he had worn the first time Aven took a step, and Lea had suggested the boy had been waiting for him to be there. He hadn't expected to become a father to them, and certainly not so quickly, but Alec was right. There was no feeling like it. When the El-Aurian suggested not waiting as long as he had, Riyo couldn't help but grin. "Considering the unlikelihood I'll even reach your age, I'm certainly not planning on waiting that long." But age wasn't his primary concern. "I'd be lying if I said I haven't thought about it," he admitted, part of him glad to have someone to talk to about it. Since meeting Leanna, his lacking social life had become blatantly obvious to him, and he found the thoughts spilling from his mouth without concern of the fact that he really didn't know Alec. "We haven't talked about it though. There's a few more things we need to get through before we add another child to our lives." When he first decided to seek treatment for his trauma, they'd agreed that he wouldn't spend the night around the kids again until he could fall asleep without taking his medication and not risk having another nightmare. Ari was still too young to fully understand, and he didn't want to scare her. He certainly wasn't going to bring up having another kid when he wouldn't be around all the time to help with the care.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor][...] She tapped her com badge again. "Velal to Security. We've got some strange things happening on Deck 26. Nothing to raise an alarm about, but I can use an extra set of eyes down here." Com traffic had been quiet that day, so there was likely plenty of Security personnel looking for something to do. [ PO1 S'Riia - Promenade --> Deck 26 Corridor, Front Ear Station ] S'Riia's hand closed around the ice cream cone as the vendor handed it to her. Sure, it was average vanilla, but it was draped in Yriddian white chocolate and Walla-nuts from Cait. Her tongue rested on her lower lip a she brought the treat closer only to hear the chirp of her comm badge. She paused as she heard Petty Officer Velal ask for additional support on Deck 26. The half-Caitian waited with bated breath to see if anyone else would respond, but the channel was silent. S'Riia's ears drooped as her sense of duty kicked in and she reached up and tapped her comm badge. =A= "This is S'Riia. I'll be right down." =A=S'Riia gave the cone one last, longing look before she dropped it into a trash dispenser. It was better to avoid it all together rather than to sample it and have to do away with it so quickly. She made her way towards the turbolift and promptly proceeded to Deck 26. After stepping off the lift, it didn't take long for her to reach Velal's location. Of course, quite the gathering seemed to be waiting there as well. There were a pair of the resident scientists: the Vulcan T'Laara and the El-Aurian Doctor... Sir (human titles were so confusing) Zaman. At least she believed he'd inherited that particular title on Earth. And then, there was also Kaya. S'Riia wasn't quite certain what to feel at the sight of the young Trill. Relieved... annoyed... frustrated... ashamed. She considered Kaya a friend, but had clearly missed all the signs before she'd left the station. Perhaps it was a title she applied too loosely. She hadn't even spoken to Kaya since her return, of course, she wasn't sure what to say. How, or even if she should apologize. She swallowed and took a deep breath, before turning her eyes and forcing her attention on Velal. "You said there was something strange happening here?" said S'Riia, hoping for an abbreviated explanation of exactly what warranted a second pair of eyes from the station's finest.

Tag Ozu Saya[ Dr. Alec Trenzal - Sickbay] Alec's 'Listener' senses were tingling as Riyo spoke. He didn't know the other man's story, but based on the fact that he was Bajoran and his approximate age, it was a pretty fair guess that Riyo had probably suffered in the Cardassian Occupation and probably still experienced some trauma from it. Alec would never presume to voice his assumption, though, nor try to draw out more information. People just couldn't seem to help talking to El-Aurians once they got going. His smile became a little less manic, and Alec nodded. ' That's wise,' he said. ' Don't rush into things, make sure it's right.' To give Riyo an out if he didn't want to keep sharing, Alec sat at one of the other workstations where he could still easily see and hear Riyo but not make him feel like he had to keep talking. ---------- Tag Jovireh Velal

[ T’Laara - Deck 26] T’Laara nodded in greeting at the arrival of another security officer, S’Riia, and looked around at was fast becoming a diverse crowd of people. They were still no closer to discovering the source of the power fluctuations or the whereabouts of the missing plant, but surely they had enough help to figure it out. “A plant specimen has gone missing from the lab, and there have been unexplained power fluctuations on this deck,” she offered as explanation to S’Riia, leaving the others to fill in the details. She turned back to the others. Velal’s idea of checking the rest of the labs in case someone working on a different project had taken it was a reasonable course of action. “I can accompany you and see if I recognize it,” T’Laara offered. However, there was still something about all of this that made it seem like more than a simple accident, or the mistake of someone working in a hurry. “It is unusual that the container was left behind. There were no fragments of roots stuck in the soil, as there might be if someone repotted it in a haste. Nor was there any other physical trace of the plant. That makes it appear to have been moved deliberately.”Jovireh Velal Kaya Som Isaiah Quinn Dugris Zaman

[ CPO Kaya Som | Deck 26 ]T'Laara (whom Kaya remembered now) claimed the sample wasn't dangerous, Velal advised against sharp objects, and Sir Doug did was so many would love to do and disappeared into the shadows. A shame, as he was, like many of his rare kind, exceedingly easy to talk to. When S'Riia arrived, Kaya noted the long uneasy look and did her best to pretend she didn't notice. Kaya knew S'Riia was probably just embarrassed for her, it was better for them both to save a little face. Best just get on with the work. After T'Laara finished with a more detailed breifing, it was clear enough now - the power issues were coincident with a plant sample being lifted from the lab seemingly without a trace. Her comm chirruped a message from Engineering. :comm: "Fournier to Som, we ran a pathing trace and it came back as a MT failure. Sending the full report to your tricorder." :comm: "Oh, lovely news. Thanks, Fournier." She tapped at the screen and sure enough - this was very likely a hardware failure. Kaya began to remove the flashlight on her wrist and as she did so, it illuminated her face from below. She'd need it for a headlamp in the dark. She explained things to the party. "It's the tubes for me. I need to run the conduits to check for a probable physical malfunction." Shavan Th'zhaar, Dugris Zaman, Jovireh Velal, Isaiah Quinn

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor]Jovireh looked over as S'Riia approached, briefly relieved since she was a rank senior to her. Though she doubted the Caitain had much more experience with this particular matter than she did. Thankfully, T'Laara filled her in on the problem, and Jov gave a small shrug. "I know individually they don't sound like much, but I stopped believing in coincidences a long time ago."At the Vulcan's offer to help search the other labs, Jov almost turned her down, feeling rather confident she'd be able to recognize anything from that planet. However, T'Laara had been looking at this particular plant every day for the past month. If she wanted to help, there was no reason for her not to.

However, T'Laara had been looking at this particular plant every day for the past month. If she wanted to help, there was no reason for her not to. [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Deck 26 Corridor, Front Ear Station ] It didn't take S'Riia to long to get caught up on the facts thanks the the Vulcan T'Laara. It seemed that there was a missing plant, which on its own didn't seem like much of a big deal. In all likelihood it had been misplaced and lacking a paper trail to let others know where it had gone. Still, the note of power fluctuations on this deck did seem like an odd coincidence. Or, as PO Velal pointed out, coincidences weren't something they tended to put a lot of faith into. S'Riia paid further attention the details that T'Laara mentioned about the missing plant. It's original potting was still there, but there weren't any lingering signs of the plant at all. So, if it had been moved deliberately, the questions were where and why? The Caitian took a deep breath, still trying to determine how or why the power fluctuations could tie into this. She pulled the tricorder from its holster. She interfaced with the door's entry log to see the last people in the area. No one really stood out as abnormal, which hinted that there wasn't a security breach... or someone was much more clever. Either way, interviews could be conducted to make certain that these people were actually in the area at the times listed in the logs. "Before you go, have you determined a working timeline of how long the plant has been potentially missing?" the question was moreso directed at Velal, though T'Laara could likely speak to the question as well. The half-Caitian then heard Kaya announce that she needed to hit the tubes, to investigate what could be a physical malfunction. If Velal was going to look into the plant with the Vulcan's help, then perhaps S'Riia could focus on these fluctuations. "Mind if I tag along. Just in case there's evidence of sabotage?" In all honesty, Kaya was more than capable of identifying those signs on her own, but being there would allow the engineer to focus on the malfunction. At least, that was what S'Riia was telling herself.
