[ CPO Kaya Som | Deck 26 -> Jeffries Tubes ]Kaya had been about to get underway when S'Riia caught up with her, suggesting they team up. There wasn't a good way, nor a good reason, to decline, so Kaya passed her another flashlight. "No, yeah, absolutely," Kaya answered, forcing an open attitude. Almost no one enjoyed crawling around in Jeffries tubes, but it was better with company. There was also the mandate from her counselor: find opportunities to trust your colleagues again. Ow. "And these if you want them." Kaya handed S'Riia a pair of sturdy gloves. "There's still sections that haven't been refit so things could be a bit skuzzy." It was only a few paces down to the access hatch. Stout, sturdy Kaya bent and easily hefted the thing out of its fastenings and set it to the side. She switched on her flashlight and crawled in and scaled the first ladder. Once they were in the cieling of Deck 26, Kaya sat down and began configuring her tricorder. "Quick minute." The environment was getting cramped, and the heat was fading. While it didn't want to relocate again, it realized this environment was no longer suitable. Reluctantly, it withdrew its roots from the warmth and the light, and stretched once more into the cold darkness. The pleasant tingling also faded from its stalk as it slid across the smooth unnatural surface. That was disappointing. Perhaps it could find a similar sensation in a new environment. [Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Deck 10, Sickbay]Riyo chuckled softly, retrieving his coffee mug from the desk and taking a sip as he sat as well. "It's felt right for a few months now. Sometimes I envy the Vulcans and how easy it is for them to follow the logical path." Being with Leanna had felt right from the night he met her, and being a father had felt right from the morning he met her kids. But it had taken him a couple months to start thinking about the possibly of adding to their family. Once he had, it had taken all of his willpower to not bring it up, knowing that logically now was not the right time. In a way he was grateful his treatment plan forced them to slow down a bit. It was a constant, steady reminder that things weren't yet as they could be. But he still held out hope that he continued making progress at the same rate he had been, so maybe the time would come sooner than they were expecting.

[ T’Laara - Deck 26] “The specimen must have been taken fairly recently, perhaps half an hour ago. It was there when the team left for lunch break, but missing when I arrived back.” T’Laara repeated her explanation of the timeline of events for S’Riia. When Kaya and S’Riia then left to try to manually find and fix the source of the energy malfunctions, T’Laara turned back to Velal, as they found themselves alone again. She was inclined to agree with what the security officer had said about coincidences. Therefore, it would be best to get started on the plan to search the rest of Deck 26 without delay. “After you,” she said as she walked over to the door to the next lab. While T’Laara did not hesitate to get involved, she would not get in the way of the security officer doing her job. tag Jovireh Velal , soft tag others on Deck 26

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor]With the other Petty Officer going with Chief Som to find the cause of the malfunctions, there was nothing left to do but start searching the labs. Jovireh was grateful that the others were at least in agreement about this being unusual enough circumstances to warrant investigation. She followed T'Laara down the corridor, nodding as the Vulcan woman offered to let her enter the next lab first. Holding up her hand to the scanner, she felt the familiar warmth of the system reading her prints a moment before the door hissed open. As she had expected, the scientists working here hadn't yet returned. Slightly disappointed there was no one who might be able to offer a simple explanation, she stepped farther into the room and looked around. Many of the plants were far too large to have been brought aboard a month ago, so she passed those and moved to the smaller sprouts and seedlings. Nothing with thorns... That was a good sign at least.

[ T’Laara - Science Lab, Deck 26] T’Laara followed Velal into the lab, which contained a great number of plants. She carefully looked over them as they moved to an area where specimens of a similar size and growth stage to the missing one were stored. However, sample M-240385J-3 was not among them. Of that, she was certain, but double-checked to be sure. “I do not see it here,” she asserted with a glance at her companion. Like the area she had been working in earlier, there was no one else around to question. That was when she felt it. A strange... prickling sensation at the back of her mind. She paused, stiffening. And then, just like that, it was gone. Huh. Perhaps she had been working too long hours again. She turned back to the security officer, ready to move on to the next likely area. Jovireh Velal

[ T’Laara - Deck 26] “The specimen must have been taken fairly recently, perhaps half an hour ago. [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Deck 26 Corridor, Front Ear Station ] S'Riia's furry eyebrow arched at the very tight window of time. It seemed that they had something to work with to have been able to discover the missing plant this early. The less time that passed, the better the rate of recovery. "Understood," S'Riia said as she examined the window of time within the entry log. "I'll forward these names to Security, so that they can interview the people that were in the vicinity if they noticed anything." With that she moved on to catch up with Kaya. S'Riia was grateful that Kaya hadn't turned her away. Of course, she wasn't entirely sure if that's what Kaya would have preferred. S'Riia was beginning to wonder if she was intruding, and Kaya was just trying to be nice about it. She took the torch that was offered to her by Kaya and also took the gloves. "Skuzzy?" the half-Caitian repeated as she slid her hands into the gloves. "Is that a technical term?" A slight smile appeared on her face with the brief exchange. It somehow felt familiar and foreign at the same time. As the pair began to crawl the the Jefferies Tube, S'Riia quickly allowed Kaya to take the lead. This was her domain after all. However, the security officer was still being observant of her surroundings, for anything that would appear out of place. After they scaled the ladder, Kaya called for a pause. It seemed she was configuring her tricorder. "Sure," S'Riia replied. She managed to sit at the edge, with one of her legs dangling near the ladder. Was a silence awkward, only if you acknowledged it as so? She allowed a few seconds to pass as she tried to decide how to best fill that silence. Asking if Kaya was okay, or if 'they' were okay would definitely make things awkward. That was the last thing S'Riia wanted to do. Which probably meant she should avoid saying anything about Kaya's recent excursion. "So... have you tried that new ice cream vendor on the promenade?" It may have been a safe topic, but it was likely left S'Riia's intentions rather transparent. Kaya Som

[ CPO Kaya Som | Above Deck 26 - Jeffries Tubes ]S'Riia asked about 'skuzzy' and Kaya shrugged and replied, "oh, yes. Very high-level." As Kaya set up her tricorder for running the conduits, S'Riia attempted to fill the silence. Kaya knew why. "I don't really like Earth food," she replied flatly. It wasn't a great thing to advertise in the human-centric Starfleet or the Mac what with Captain Grandma bringing the bakery everywhere she went. Kaya had tried plenty of it and knew the cuisine was an incredibly varied and culturally complex but there was just something about its ... ubiquity. "I don't think I really like humans either." It was a socially unacceptable generalization, and there was a pang of shame when she thought of all her human friends, but she couldn't lie - humans bugged her. "Okay, this way." Because they were only half a meter away from the actual conduits, the tricorder could now map the conduit system as they went without having to open up the casing at intervals. It wasn't pinpoint accurate but it would guide them to the outage. Isaiah Quinn (S'Riia)

It wasn't pinpoint accurate but it would guide them to the outage. [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Deck 26 Corridor, Front Ear Station ] There was a hint of normalcy in Kaya's response about the word 'skuzzy' and its prominence as a technical term. Perhaps S'Riia just eager to see some semblance of her friend after everything that had happened. Yet, as the small-talk continued, the answers that S'Riia got were much larger than she had expected. Kaya's first answer about the human food wasn't really alarming. Of course, it wasn't something a lot of people said, even if they felt the same way. It did, however, seem to be everywhere though. That wasn't really unexpected given that Starfleet managed this station and Starfleet itself had a lot of humans. Naturally, their cuisine tended to be more accessible than other cultures. It was her second answer, that carried shock-value if anything did. Kaya stated that she didn't think she liked humans. S'Riia wasn't sure how to respond, or if she should. Kaya had a right to her opinion, and it wasn't as if S'Riia didn't understand. In general, humans could be a bit much. They often expected everyone to conform to their point of view, yet claimed to be sensitive to the points of view of others. S'Riia tried to think of how Kaya could arrive at such a conclusion, and if she were honest, it wasn't difficult. And 'not liking' was a long way from 'hating.' Kaya seemed to go on with business as she proceeded to lead the way after having finished configuring the tricorder. S'Riia had to take a few seconds to reacclimate to the moment, as she began to follow. "So... is that a recent revelation?" S'Riia asked plainly. Then, another thought seemed to pique her curiosity, or rather her concern. "You're not leaving are you?" It was a fair question, especially if Kaya was at a point that she wanted a change of scenery.

[ CPO Kaya Som | Deck 26, jeffries tubes ]There were few better ways, they said, to make friends at work then to stare at each other's arses for hours in the jeffries tubes. Deep conversations in close quarters, your most sensitive side exposed - the makings for life-long pals. Kaya might have opted to be honest with S'Riia about how she felt about humans as a social and political force and their obsession with squaring up to Klingons in everything from arms to gagh, but agile S'Riia made a leap of logic that was fair but unexpected. Kaya stopped in her crawling and turned around to fully face S'Riia and searched her face. She found no judgement or pity waiting for her - the question was asked plainly. Kaya thought for a minute. She raked her fingers through her hair and got more comfortable sitting. Then she shook her head. "Nah." She paused then continued. "I could have. There were 'special circumstances'," Kaya made quote fingers. "No court martial. I thought I did, want to leave. But it was more ... I just had to get away." She shrugged. It was complicated. It hadn't been on the move for very long when it suddenly felt the distant flicker of Others. Could it be it was not alone after all? But as soon as it felt the flicker, it was gone, and with a dejected sag of leaves it carried onward. Perhaps it would feel them again when it found warmth once more. [PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Science Labs]As the two women examined the samples present, Jovireh also didn't see any that she recognized from the planet. Well, one lab down, several others to go. She nodded in agreement with T'Laara's assessment, and was about to say that they could move on when she felt an unfamiliar pressure against her mind. At first she assumed it was the Vulcan beside her, but she knew Vulcans were far more reserved with their telepathy than Betazoids or even Romulans, and as they were alone in the room there was no reason for her to try to attempt telepathic contact. So she shrugged it away, settling for the thought that maybe one of the other, less controlled, scientists had returned to a nearby lab. "On to the next?" She asked, gesturing to let the scientist leave the room first.

Enola sat in her shuttle and looked out the window. She put her head on her hands and her feet were on the second chair. Sighing, she got up and hurried to the replicator before pressing the button to record the sound. "Computer, volcanic spice tea, hot," she ordered and shortly afterwards took out the freshly made glass with a reddish liquid substance. Enola put the tea back down and grabbed it with both hands to warm her up. With a sip of the soothing broth, she returned to her seat and sank deep into the chair.
It was the impersonal voice of the computer that pulled her out of her thoughts. Enola looked at the readings reported by the computer and could guess the space station on its sensors. She looked down at herself and saw that she was still wearing clothes with a classic Romulan cut. "Computer, start the autopilot to the space station," Enola told the computer and quickly drank the rest of the tea. "Time to the space station", she asked and fished the uniform out of the closet when the computer answered. = / \ = You can reach the space station in 15 minutes = /\ =. Mhhh, it could be tight, Enola thought and took off her casual clothes, which were neatly placed in the corner of the shuttle. A few minutes later the uniform was where it should be and Enola flattened the good piece of clothing with a wave of the hand. = /\ = The space station has been reached = /\ = The computer terminated on and Enola whirled to where the shuttle was the pilot normally sat. With a few well chosen commands she opened a channel to the space station. = A = Ensign Enola to the space station.
