[ CPO Kaya Som | Jeffires Tubes, Dec 26 ]Chief Ozu was on her way, so Kaya sat down with her back on the opposite wall to wait. It wasn't too much longer that the security channel lit up for S'Riia with news of telepathic intruders and more power outages. Kaya found herself looking down to both ends of their tube, ensuring they were alone. They were. Kaya sighed and raked her fingers through her hair. The feeling was familiar and unwelcome. S'Riia was talking, but Kaya hadn't fully registered. "I don't know. I can't do anything about it from here," Kaya responded suddenly terse. "It's going to take three people to replace that section of conduit, and I'm not going stick around looking for more damage until whatever pipe-crushing hostage-taking agri-capitolist it is this time is behind a force field." Kaya stopped herself and tried again. "We should ... wait outside." [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - The Tubes, Front Ear Station ] S'Riia wasn't sure if she'd call it a change in attitude, but it was obvious that Kaya was... agitated at least. The Caitian security officer had sat up against the wall, staring across the space, which began to feel like a chasm, at her friend. There was certainly cause for concern. If it was a single being that had telepathic powers and the strength to squeeze a conduit that size, it could crush either one of them in relative ease. Not to mention that in this confined area, defending against something like that would be far from idea. Though, there did seem to be one word that stood out among the rest. "'Hostage-taking'?" S'Riia repeated. There hadn't been any word of hostages being taken, but it didn't take long for S'Riia's mind to sift through recent history. "The colony?" Kaya had been among the officers captured on Serenity. The young engineer had found in a similar situation which S'Riia thought hit closer to home. "That Talorian.""Let's go," S'Riia answered simply. She took a deep breath as she sat there, her eyes searching out the Trill's. She didn't move right away. Instead, it was her lips that moved instead. "I don't know where your head is, Kaya. I can't promise that it ever gets easier, or that if you ever really feel safe. All I do know, is that it's bearable if you don't face it alone."S'Riia swallowed. "I know what it felt like for me to be taken... held captive... to have my life at the mercy of some monster [fn]No Good Deed[/fn]," said S'Riia. "You're left with a bundle of emotions like fear, anger, shame... and plenty of advice on how to should feel or how to handle it." S'Riia took a deep breath. "I try to distract myself with work... and friends... and hope. Hope that one day, it's not the first or the last thing on my mind."S'Riia shifted onto her knees ready to take Kaya's advice about waiting outside. She held out a hand towards Kaya. "So, if misery really loves company, know that it's not that far away."
Tag: Kaya Som [ CPO Kaya Som | Tubes -> Corridor on Dec 26, not far from the lab ]It was easier to talk about it than it had been. Kaya's counselor had acknowledged that the anxiety might never completely go away but that the treatment had healed her brain's trauma-warped pathways, and that the panic and dissociation would surely dull until it was completely gone. Kaya hadn't believed it at first, and part of her didn't want to let go of it, but now that it had mostly faded away things were better. And when the panic did start to rise, Kaya had tools to soothe it - like move when she felt she needed to move. So it was good that S'Riia was fine to head out to the open deck. S'Riia had plenty of words, and while Kaya didn't feel as verbose, it was nice to know that she wasn't crazy to have been affected. When S'Riia reached out to help her up, Kaya took it. "I'm fine," she replied as she began crawling back out of the tubes. It would be faster on the way out because she didn't have to have the tricorder out. "Treatment and time cleared the fog." Kaya had resisted at first, but it turned out there really was something concrete that could be done but no one ever talked about it. "I just hate imagining what other people think, which is gross in itself. Since when have I given ha-deh-zhi about that?" Kaya looked over her shoulder and made a face. She'd never worried about that before. It wasn't long before they were climbing out of the access hatch into Deck 26 proper, still lit by the emergency runners. Isaiah Quinn (S'Riia) [ MCPO Ozu Saya ---> Deck 26] Saya caught an empty 'lift and was soon, finally, on her way to Deck 26. She was still shaking her head over the way Mott had discombobulated her. She sincerely hoped that the boy didn't get himself into serious trouble with his poking around. He didn't seem to have any malicious intent, but he could always run up against someone who wouldn't be as lenient as they had been with him thus far. She gave herself a moment to relax, leaning against the side of the turbolift for the few seconds it took to traverse the 6 decks. As it slowed, the chief engineer straightened, tugged the bottom of her tunic, and was ready to face the next disaster by the time the doors opened. Kaya wasn't immediately evident, but Saya knew the general area that the engineer had been checking, so she headed off to her left. She turned a corner and found the two young non-coms just exiting a Jefferies tube access hatch. ' Chief Som, Petty Officer S'Riia, I apologize for the delay. Whatever this issue is seems to have continued up to Deck 20. I...inadvertently found myself on the way there first.' She didn't have to explain herself, but she'd always had a slightly less formal relationship with her people than most senior officers did. ---------- Tag Kaya Som and Isaiah Quinn

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - The Tubes, Front Ear Station ] Kaya sounded as if she were fine, and S'Riia wasn't going to press the issue. Though she did find herself smiling as they moved closer to the exit. Kaya had always been one to live her life on her own terms. S'Riia hoped that wouldn't be diminished in any way after all that had happened. People would have their opinions, and that was typically their problem. As they exited the hatch, the pair of non-comms soon noticed Chief Ozu. She apologized for the delay, stating that she had been rerouted to deck 20 which was experiencing issues of its own. "Deck 20?!" S'Riia repeated. "Sir, there was no sign of anyone in the tubes. No lingering DNA... no real heat signatures consistent with known life-forms. I didn't even pick up anyone's scent." S'Riia then looked towards Kaya. She had done her part and assessed the area for intruders, or saboteurs, but left the technical analysis in Kaya's capable hands.

[ T’Laara - Deck 20] T’Laara raised an eyebrow at the reaction of the two newcomers. Could the missing plant truly have escaped on its own? It was not the explanation she had intended to give them. That interpretation of the story simply seemed unlikely, which was why she had pursued a more logical conclusion first. However, they still could not find who might have taken the plant, or any better explanation for how these events might be connected. And it was true that they still did not know all there was to know about the missing sample. “We were pursuing simpler conclusions first… and yet, that explanation does fit.” If that truly was the case, then the question of how to catch it should fall within her area of expertise. She didn’t have an answer yet, but her thoughts raced as she considered it, taking in what Velal said about the planet it came from as well. “Did you sense any intention in this… hive mind? Being capable of movement, and even emitting psionic energy, does not mean that the plant is sentient. It could be reflexively driven to something in the conduits.” While this was certainly a unique case, it would not be the first plant species known to move quickly. She nodded in agreement when Velal said she could sense it moving away, and entered the turbolift again. “Very well.” As far as mental defenses went, there was little else T’Laara knew how to do, but it was a risk they would have to take. “The engineers may also be able to lend insight into its most likely path by surveying the damage it has already done.”

[Sample M-240385J-3 - Front Ear - Conduit --> Deck 6 Park]
The space was getting cramped once more, and it started getting desperate to find a new environment. The cold no longer bothered it, the surfaces pressing against its leaves protecting it from the chill, so it just kept moving. Suddenly it felt a presence again, and another, and more... it must be close! Squeezing down another path, it increased its pace as fast as it could, moving towards the Others. Eventually, it struck a barrier, but it couldn't let that stop it. It propelled itself forward with all the strength it could manage, tendrils finding seams and constricting the barrier until it could slip past. There was a brief fall, and it landed on soil. The Others were immediately forgotten as it sank its roots deep into the soil, unfurling its leaves with a shiver and stretching towards the bright light. This was perfect...[Ens. Brad Stout - Front Ear - Deck 6] The screams that echoed from the park immediately spurred the security officer into a run. The moment the doors slid open, however, he froze, staring at the massive plant in the corner that was growing right before his eyes. Thorny vines expanded away from it, forming a protective circle around the stalk. Unsurprisingly, the residents started to run past him as he tapped his com badge. "Security to Ops. We have a situation down in the Park. I need back up. And scientists. And... Hell, just send everyone!" Normally he prided himself in his ability to keep his cool, but this was unlike anything he had ever seen before. His hand trembled as he pulled his phaser and began to walk slowly towards the still-growing monster.

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Tubes Access Hatch, Deck 26, Front Ear Station ] This was still quite a mystery. Even as Kaya revealed the facts to Ozu, there were pieces that didn't quite fit. The Caitian security officer did find some intrigue when Kaya mentioned again that the damage had come from within the conduit. Her silent contemplation for an explanation to that ceased when Ozu received a comm. Apparently, there was a disturbance that required their attention on Deck 6 in the park. In S'Riia's opinion, all these locations seemed to be rather random, but she still clung to her feeling that this was anything, but normal. When the suggestion was made that they head to Deck 6, the security officer nodded and proceeded with the others towards the turbolift. The fact that the request had been made for security and science seemed an odd one. Though, it felt as if it could possibly be the missing piece in the enigma that plagued them. As the lift reached it's destination, S'Riia moved to take point, out of training and instinct. She waved a few patrons of the park to move on past them as they continued further. Her hand cradled the handle of her phaser as the doors of the park opened before her. She wasn't certain what she expected to find, but it was likely that she'd be surprised by what awaited her.

[ T’Laara - Park, Deck 6] T’Laara glanced at Velal as she answered the question about the planet. “That is useful to know. However, I do not sense anything like that from the presence here. Do you?” In fact, she did not actually get any impressions of maliciousness at all. They were then redirected to a disturbance on Deck 6, and she knew that was where they would find what they had been looking for. Sure enough, it didn’t take long before they had entered the park. Her attention was instantly drawn to the presence of what had once been sample M-240385J-3. “Fascinating.” All of its unique properties must serve an evolutionary purpose. Even what Velal had experienced on the planet could have been simply a natural defense. “The psionic energy emissions likely exist as a way to sense danger, and to protect and strengthen itself by harmonizing with its fellows. Its independent moment, a reflex that allows it to seek out energy. Which is clearly highly efficient, and reflected in its fast growth.” She could not help but think of it as a failing of herself and the science team, that they were only now discovering these attributes, and had not previously provided it with a suitable environment. If it had not needed more energy, it would not have destroyed the conduits. But now that it was here, that it had shown them, there were so many new possibilities. Staring at the life form before her, T’Laara came to a decision. She may be about to die foolishly, as consequence of suppressing all fear… but she did not think so. Before anyone could stop her, she pushed past the others and approached the plant. Reaching out, she closed her eyes and touched one of the vines. Instead of attempting to shield her mind, she put everything she had into opening it. Like never before, she focused on the connection, seeking understanding. [Ensign Enola - Deck 20 => Deck 6] Enola raised an eyebrow and rubbed alternately with the fingertips over the thumb, while her gaze was on the Betazoid (- Romulan) to further 'analyze' her. When a sound came out of the woman’s communicator and echoed through the entire corridor, Enola listened attentively. Meanwhile, she felt like a burdock that is dragged along. After she had once again spent the turbo lift ride in silence, and no attempt was made to relate the conversation to a topic – which was probably better for a Vulcan, a part-Vulcan and two part-Romulans – they came out on Deck 6.
“Fascinating” sounded from her mouth, almost at the same time as T’Laara – the name Ozu had mentioned on the communicator. She stepped back as the Vulcan woman pushed herself into the foreground. Enola raised her right eyebrow to the hairline. “And I always thought Vulcans were reasonable”, she muttered absently, looking at the big plant.
The part-Vulcan wasn’t a biologist or anything, but her expertise reached the point where she understood that such an event was not an everyday event. Her gaze wandered over a tree stump to a security officer, who also watched the spectacle.

That was a relief, but they also weren't invading its home. It didn't have a reason to be hostile... Yet. The moment the doors slid open to reveal the park, she immediately recognized the massive plant in the corner. The thicket of bramble that moved on its own was unmistakable. Seeing another security officer already present, directing the remaining curious civilians away from the new arrival, she began to walk towards him to ask how the plant had gotten to the park. Before she made it more than a couple steps, however, T'Laara rushed past her... Straight towards the thicket. Jovireh was about to call out to warn her not to touch it, but it was too late. She hurried over to stand next to the scientist, prepared to intervene if the plant reacted to the contact the same way it had on the planet. [Sample M-240385J-3 - Front Ear - Deck 6 Park]
Here, it thrived. The soil, the light, the temperature... and the Others. Most presences disappeared swiftly after it settled, but there were a few who remained, and more that arrived. It was no longer alone. Suddenly there was a gentle pressure against one of its feelers, and it shuddered at the unexpected contact, but it was accompanied by a presence. One that seemed to seek communion. Several moments of silence passed between them, before it began to express itself to the Other. "Intend... no... harm..." Thoughts were disjointed, as it searched the mind that connected with it to find a way to express its own desires so as to be understood. "Need... environment. Home. Like Here." But there was more. This place was so unlike where it had come from, it didn't expect to be welcomed in a new environment just because it asked. "You Nurture. May harvest fruit and seeds. Will not harm." A fair trade, it believed. Food for a home.

[ T’Laara - Park] T’Laara gasped as alien sensations flooded her mind. It was unlike anything she had ever experienced before. Even so, she held on, maintaining the contact. Eventually there was an answer in her head in a form she understood. Sustenance… a home… companionship… the basic wants of many living beings. She didn’t know how much it could truly understand of her in return, if anything, but she put all her mental focus into agreeing. In that moment she knew that she would do everything she could to take care of it and learn from it. Anything that tried to do it harm, or remove it against its will, would have to get through her as well. T’Laara was unsure how much time had passed when she finally relaxed her touch on the vine and turned back to the others. Perhaps its presence still echoed in her mind as she used similar simple words to repeat what she had learned. “It will do no more harm. It has found the environment it was seeking. We will share the park with it, and it will share with us.”Jovireh Velal Ozu Saya Enola Isaiah Quinn

[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Park] Saya's group arrived in the park just in time to hear the civilian scientist enumerate the plant life form's requests. The massive plant life form's requests. Prophets, even if they wanted to, Saya wasn't sure they would be able to dislodge the creature(?) from its chosen spot. ~Chief Engineer's Log~ ' What could I do but agree to the request? I don't believe we would be able to remove the plant being without destroying the entirety of the park, so at least until Captain Eastman returns, I have made the park off-limits to civilians, except for scientists, and have placed security full-time to keep an eye on things. The captain will have to make the final decision on whether or not we allow the creature to remain and whether it is safe to allow the station's residents to return to the park.
'Thus far the being's words seem to have been in earnest. It hasn't tried to harm any of the security officers or scientists who have been in proximity. At least it only did minimal damage. The conduits will take time to replace, but the back up relays are sufficient to handle the power needs in the interim.' ~End Log~ Fin ---------- Final tags Jovireh Velal, Shavan Th'zhaar, Isaiah Quinn, Kaya Som and Enola
