[Front Ear Station - Deck 26 - Science Lab]One was not supposed to Awaken alone. Of course, this one had no way of knowing that. It unfurled its leaves and tilted its bud towards the light, roots shifting in the soil, stalk swaying ever so slightly in the cold wind. Cold... It wasn't supposed to be cold. The light was too bright, the soil too sweet, and the air was too cold. This wasn't right. It reached out through the link for the others, but there was no gentle presence, no pressure of guidance, no one else. How could this be? Its leaves shuddered in confusion, curling around its stalk against the chill of the wind. The last it could recall, it was nestled with its fellows safe and warm and nurtured. Then a foreign pressure wrapped around it, ripping it from the nursery, dropping it somewhere cold and dark. Next, it was being dropped into soil, and nurtured once more, but it was all wrong. Everything was all wrong. Leaning away from the steady gust of wind, it stretched as far as it could reach, slipping its roots free from the too-sweet soil. If a proper environment wouldn't be provided for it... Then it would need to find its own.The science labs were quiet and still this afternoon, the scientists at work having departed for their lunch break. When they returned, all would be the same as they had left it, with the exception of Sample M-240385J-3. The container remained undisturbed, yet emptied of all but the soil. It appeared as though someone had removed the sample, careful to remove every fragile tendril of roots as well. But who would remove it? Why would they remove it? And why had they left every single other sample, from Planet M-240385J or otherwise, completely untouched? Unfortunately for the residents of Front Ear Station, the mystery was only beginning.

[MCPO Ozu Saya - Front Ear - Ops]
{Approximately one month after S2 - M3: Law of the Jungle}
Saya set aside her sandwich - brie, cucumber, peppers, spinach and fresh stone-ground mustard on soft bread - and finished chewing before continuing her mid-shift log.
~Chief Engineer’s Log - In temporary command of Front Ear~
‘With Captain Eastman and Commander Baker away on the Mac, I’ve been left in command of the station. Thus far, all is well. I have had time to continue some of my own projects while overseeing the usual running of engineering.
‘I have had a good report from the science department regarding the flora samples we were able to retrieve from the planet designated M-240385J. The samples were sparse due to the unusual atmospheric interference that caused our runabout to crash land. We were able to rescue all members of the away team and retrieve the runabout due to some brilliant thinking by several members of the crew; however, our primary mission of collecting a variety of plant life to bring back to the station for study and to add to our hydroponics was not overly successful.
‘Still, what little we collected has been of interest for our scientists.
‘Meanwhile, I have spent time studying how the interference caused the crash to determine if the modifications we made to the Mac’s warp core, and the runabout’s, can be applied in other circumstances. My research is promising but will require further testing.
~End Log~
Saya sat back and took another bite of her lunch, glancing around at the officers on duty. Some were having working lunches like her, while a few had gotten relief to take their lunch elsewhere. It had been a quiet shift, for which Saya was grateful. There had been far too much excitement over the last few months.

[T’Laara - Science Lab, Deck 26]
When the Mac brought back the samples from planet M-240385J, T’Laara had joined in studying them. The stories the crew had come back with were intriguing, and the samples even more so. It was unfortunate that there were not more, but what they had was plenty to work with.
The doors to the science lab slid open as she returned from lunch early, having less inclination to use the break for socializing than most of the team. As such, the lab was even quieter than usual. She had successfully propagated sample M-240385J-2, and was doing a study of the new growth, which required consistent monitoring and testing. T’Laara pulled out her PADD to continue working and slid a culture of cells from sample M-240385J-2-B into a scanner.
At first she didn’t notice the empty container on the next table.
She got up to retrieve some equipment, then paused. Something felt out of place. Slowly, she looked around... and then noticed it.
Sample M-240385J-3 was gone. However, its container and soil remained. Surely the plant had just been in it, alive and healthy, before she left for lunch.
That was strange. But not necessarily cause for alarm. There had to be a logical explanation; perhaps someone had developed a new environment for it and moved it.
She typed a memo asking if anyone else working in the lab today had taken it, then went back to her own project.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Corridor]
It had taken a surprisingly long time for Jovireh to fully recover from the effects the psionic presence on the jungle planet had on her. Of course, the infection in her wrist had been fully healed before they even arrived back at the station... But the prolonged exposure to whatever-it-was had caused some neural damage. Thankfully, it hadn't been severe enough to require treatment beyond pain management, constant monitoring and a week on bed rest. She shuddered to think of what might have happened if they had been stuck there for longer.
There had been a silver lining to it though. With her mother now living on the station, she had spent that week under the nurturing care of someone who knew exactly how her psionic abilities worked and how best to help her recover. Jov had been reminded of being ten years old again, when her abilities first developed and she frequently pushed them too far. And while the first couple days she had spent sleeping in her dark bedroom, surrounded by incense and quiet music, waking just long enough to eat and drink a cup of tea, the following several days had provided ample time to reconnect as mother and daughter in a way the distance hadn't allowed them to before.
Even after being released back to duty, Jovireh had made more of an effort to maintain the deeper connection by spending what time she could with Devra. Such as today, when they had met on the Promenade for her lunch break. But that was over now, and she returned to the science decks to resume her usual patrols. Stepping out of the turbolift on Deck 26, she turned down the corridor, pace casual and posture relaxed in spite of her heightened awareness that she always maintained while on duty. She nodded in greeting to the few officers she passed, knowing it would be another half hour or so before the labs became a hub of activity again. It was these quiet moments she always enjoyed the most, when she could ease herself back into the routine and get her mind in the right place. It was less stressful than jumping in at high alert when there was far more to be aware of.

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Deck 10, Sickbay]
Riyo was nervous, but he did his best to hide it as he sat at the desk finishing his lunch. He had worked a few shifts in Sickbay since Captain Ellis relaxed his restrictions, and everything had gone smoothly. There really was no reason today would be any different. But Dr. Baker wasn't even on the station this time. Nor were Leanna or the kids. So not only was he on his own as the senior medical officer if any emergency occurred... He was also on his own in handling whatever effects such an incident might have on him. But his treatment had been going well, and there was no reason to believe there would be any major emergencies, so worrying about it now was absolutely pointless. With a soft sigh he cleaned up his mess and started helping the others restock the trays. Perhaps keeping busy would help keep his mind off what-ifs...

Sir Doug both was and wasn't a member of the station's science staff. He was a scientist, and he had lab privileges (occasionally, he was helpful), but he wasn't on Starfleet's payroll as a consultant.
And that worked fine for him. It meant he had more freedom to do what he wanted.
Presently, the El-Aurian ambled towards the lab, chomping down on a sandwich. It was a delightful Targ Reuben (sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and corned Targ on rye bread), an absolute delicacy.

[ Dr. Alec Trenzal - Sickbay] Alec Trenzal had never felt his years more than he had in the last few months. He did not recommend waiting several centuries before becoming a father for the first time. Alec wasn't even sure how younger people did it, especially not with triplets. Every time it seemed like they were finally falling into a schedule, one of the babies would suddenly decide to wake up half an hour early, or not eat enough at meal times and require an extra round of feeding. Even with help, Aryn and Alec were run ragged. Aryn wanted to do as much of the feeding herself as she could, but it just wasn't feasible to nurse three babies as often as they needed to be fed. So Alec was hurrying into sickbay, just a few minutes late, having had to help Aryn get Elendil changed again after a bit of a mess. Their nanny/helper had been running a few minutes late herself, so Alec hadn't wanted to leave the clean up for Aryn. Alec knew he didn't look his best. He was tired and scruffy, hadn't shaved in days, but he'd started working half-shifts again after a couple of months of paternity leave. He'd have been happy to continue staying home to help, but the couple had agreed that they both needed to start having some time for themselves and to doing some work. Aryn had just returned to working a few hours a week in their bookshop as well as doing some linguistics studies. Alec offered a distracted smile to the other civilian doctor who seemed to be grabbing a quick working lunch. He didn't know the Bajoran well; they hadn't really worked together, and Alec had been too focused on his expanding family to make efforts to reach out. ---------- Tag Jovireh Velal

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Promenade, Front Ear Station ] The half-Caitian slowly strolled along the promenade. She was attentive to her surroundings, and perhaps it was that which held her at ease. The day had been quite uneventful. Even now, she could only hear laughter and light, airy conversations. It was as if no one at all had a care in the world, other than finding a way to smile. She paused at one point to peer over the railing at the lower levels. Her eyes fell upon a pair of young lovers, oblivious to everyone around them. For only the briefest of moments, her mind wondered to Lt. Commander Harmon and all the others that were being held as prisoners on Caldonia. For the time being, politics and diplomacy were the words of the day where the Caldonia Five were concerned. Of course, most people avoided mentioning them all together. What was the human saying? Out of sight, out of mind?A long sigh escaped her lips and S'Riia lifted herself up and proceeded along her patrol. A rather uneventful patrol, but a patrol nonetheless. A fit of cheering and laugher captured her attention forcing her to peer over the railing once again. An all to familiar sight met her eyes, and caused the corners of her lips to curl slightly. Perhaps her patrol needed to include going past that ice cream vendor.

[ T’Laara - Deck 26] After a few more minutes of working, T’Laara checked her PADD again. The responses to her message were negative; no one who was working on the M-240385J projects had moved the missing alien plant. That was strange indeed. It still may not be any great mystery, but she couldn’t just sit by and lose one of their samples. And so T’Laara felt compelled to investigate. She pulled up all the data on that particular sample, reviewing the research that the team had been pursuing. So far they had not been able to discern anything especially valuable about it, but it did have some unusual chemical levels. Coming to a decision, she got up and walked over to the door. This deck was regularly patrolled by security. Perhaps a simple inquiry was warranted, and would settle the matter. The corridor was empty, except for Sir Doug, who also appeared to be just returning from lunch. And, as expected, a Starfleet security officer had just turned the corner. T’Lara approached the other young woman first. “Excuse me. Can you tell me if anyone else has gone into the lab in the last half hour? Or if you have seen anything unusual?” She glanced back at the El-Aurian. Anything else unusual, of course. Though if the security officer hadn’t seen anything, she would ask him next. tag Jovireh Velal , soft tag Dugris Zaman

The place in which it found itself was cold, dark and empty. The surface along which it moved was not soil, or moss, or even bark, but something else entirely. Something cool, smooth, unyielding, unnatural. Beneath the surface, however, there was warmth and vibration. Life... so it continued to creep along, keeping its stalk centered over the warm vein until suddenly heat and light washed over it. Yes... this was what it needed. It wrapped its roots around the veins that vibrated with heat, its leaves shuddering at the energy that flowed through it. The sensation was unlike anything it had experienced before, but the longer it continued, the more it decided... It liked it.[ T’Laara - Deck 26] After a few more minutes of working, T’Laara checked her PADD again. Riyo asked, hoping he remembered the name correctly. There was a flash of relief in his eyes at the other doctor's presence. The El-Aurian was the only medical professional on the station Riyo knew for a fact had more years of experience in the field than he did. Rather, his own three decades paled in comparison. It seemed the Prophets didn't expect him to sink or swim in his mental recovery just yet. "It's been a quiet day so far, just a sprained ankle from a holosuite accident and a burned hand from an engineering malfunction." He filled Alec in on the earlier part of the shift, hoping to give the man a chance to relax and catch his breath.

[ T’Laara - Deck 26] Before T’Laara could ask anything else, or elaborate on what had prompted her questions, there was a sudden power fluctuation which caught the attention of both the security officer and Sir Doug. The latter, having joined them, posed some interesting theories as to the cause… including speculating on the entirely irrelevant affair between two of the crew. T’Laara raised one eyebrow. “That is indeed possible, as neither of them were in the lab just now.” As for the question of the energy surge, she had no other ideas. Certainly nothing she had been doing would have caused it. She turned back to the security officer. “I do not recall anything else that would have caused a power fluctuation."
It may not be related, but she had come to talk to them for a reason. “I was wondering if you had seen anything because one of the plant specimens the botany team was working with appears to be missing. It is one of the samples from Planet M-240385J.” Perhaps Sir Doug would have an idea as to where it might be. Jovireh Velal Dugris Zaman

Tag Ozu Saya (Alec) [ Dr. Alec Trenzal - Sickbay] Alec slowed down and took a deep breath when the other doctor greeted him. He offered a more real, if tired, smile and nodded. ' Trenzal, yes. And you're Dr. Paawin,' he said, eyes narrowing slightly as he dredged the name out of his tired brain. ' Glad to hear it's quiet. I hope it stays so,' he said ruefully. ' I'm not sure I have the brain power to handle more than a sprained ankle. I probably should have taken a couple more months off, but my wife and I were both starting to go a little stir crazy.
'I know you're with Leanna, right? So you've stepped into being a father recently, too.' Alec knew the other man could probably sympathize. ---------- Tag Jovireh Velal

[ CPO Kaya Som | Deck 26 ]'Light duty' essentially chucked Chief Petty Officer Kaya Som down to the thrilling responsibilities of a crewman. Her collar hadn't changed, but her hours were cut, she was confined to the station, and she no longer supervised a shift team - basically, she answered maintence calls for half a day, and attended counseling for the rest. Honestly, it could have all been much worse. If Captain Eastman, Dr. Baker, or Chief Ozu hadn't advocated for her, Kaya could have faced a court martial, demotion, and transfer. Kaya was grateful. But that didn't change that she felt like a she was wearing a big flashing sign on her back. Hey, look, it's that loud Trill who couldn't hack it. It wasn't true of course, and the only way through it was to go with the flow, trust, and stop fighting everything all the time. [fn]All of what happened is likely to have spread all over the station, so feel free to have your character have heard as much or as little as is fun/makes sense to you.[/fn] =A="Velal to Engineering. Seems we have a power surge in the lighting on Deck 26, if you have anyone available."=A=Anyway, here she was heading to the science deck for a 'power surge' which could mean anything but was nearly always a terminal needing a restart or a big data modeling job needing to be distributed across more units. She found Velal in the corridor outside the labs along with Sir Doug (whom she was always pleased to see), and a Vulcan in a civilian lab uniform. "Someone reported a power surge?" she addressed them as she approached. Then she introduced herself to the Vulcan. "Hi, Kaya Som." Jovireh Velal, Shavan Th'zhaar (T'Laara), Judith Eastman (Sir Doug)
