[ LT Joshua Niles - Conference Room Z, 5th Floor, Capitol, Arkaria ][...] And given Charlie just mentioned a Caldonian account being used, and some transactions leading to Nella Pas? That was hardly a smoking gun, but it was one more link in the chain. And, just like her, he sent off those travel dates to the screens around the room, and sought to correlate them with information tied to that Caldonian account. "Unless there's new arrangements being discussed between Arkaria and the Caldonians and Nyberrites, I'm seeing more travel to either than there ought to be. But nothing conclusive."[...] [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Conference Room Z]Mabel's interest in what Charlie had found was dampened by Josh's sour-grapes attitude. Rather than looking for connections between what they'd found, he seemed to be looking at how he had been wronged, and how he'd ended up - by happenstance - with the less dramatic piece of evidence. "Hold on, Caldonia. The Cardassian that Taggert's team found had a lot of Caldonian equipment on him," she observed. Mabel eyed Charlie, suspecting that Josh was too busy feeling sorry for himself to connect the dots. "What do your investigative spidey-senses say? Where does the story lead?" the youngster asked. [Charlie Fox - Conference Room Z, 5th floor, Capitol, Arkaria]"It leads to a place the Federation will not like," she said, this time her tone of voice completely serious, without even the slightest hint of sarcasm or derision. Charlie looked at Mabel, then sucked in a thoughtful breath. "Increased travel to Nyberr and Caldonia, Caldonian funds for backing, Caldonian equipment on a Cardassian, on Arkaria, payments to Nella Pas..." She looked from Mabel to Josh, and then back at the screen. "I shudder to think of these players in bed together." What did the Caldonians want from the Cardassians; what could the Cardassians possibly have that might interest them enough to fund Du Toollamé's rescue? "I say we follow the money." It was always invariably the best avenue to take, and with the access she had here via Fleet connections, it would likely prove much easier than using the resources available only to one lone reporter. Two pings sounded in quick succession. "The fund appears to have been opened by the Caldonian Foreign Office and it gets regularly topped up. There's a new transaction, here..." She paused her tapping to point toward the new entry, which was pushing the older ones up the table of the holoprojection. "Someone has just used the account."She accessed the latest entry and overlaid the location ping with a 3D representation of the Capitol's street map. A little blue dot began to blink furiously. "That's right here. It's this building. First, no, second floor!"

"Miss Henriksen, I am going to be very strongly recommending we have building security may Mister Anka a visit and drag him up here. Right now. And then shake him until we see what falls out."

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - Subble]
As they cleared up the interfearnce, Chloe began to get a clearer picture of the other submersible. It was larger than theirs, and had a full crew complement. "I'm picking up 12 life signs. One of them is Du Toollamé, there's two Caldonian lifesigns, three Naussicans, a number of Cardassians, and...wait...that can't be right," as she ran detailed ID scans to see if they knew anyone else there she picked up Matthew. That couldn't be right. What was he doing? Was he working with them?! Or on some undercover mission? "They've got Matthew...Commander Harmon," she said. He'd better have a pretty good explanation for whatever he was doing over there. Then the periscope suddenly raised and then almost immediately dropped, before they took a deep plunge downwards. "I think they've spotted us, sir." [Matthew Harmon - The Other Subble]"I do so enjoy the sealife," Matthew sighed sadly when the Caldonian ordered the periscope to be retracted before he had a chance to look. "The view isn't quite so nice from space, mon amie...oh well." He took another sip from his win as he despaired at the rudeness of the Caldonians.
Tag: Judith Eastman, Jovireh Velal [ Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle-Submersible Kenkrak] Jovireh's head snapped around when Chloe declared Commander Harmon was also on that submersible. That was definitely the last thing she'd been expecting to hear, but she tried to avoid jumping to conclusions about the possible reasons behind it. Taggert controlled his reaction a little better, his gaze focused on the helm and navigation controls in front of him. But if one was paying attention, they'd notice his back stiffen, his jaw clench, his eyes flash. When he spoke, his voice was even harder than usual. "Increasing speed to intercept. Jenkins, get a transporter lock on du Toollame and Commander Harmon. As soon as we're in range, get them over here." He turned then, his sharp gaze locking onto the younger man. "The fugitive is our top priority. Understand?" If they only had time to transport one person, that person needed to be the Gul. They could figure out what to do about Harmon later. One submersible followed the other, steadily closing the gap between them. The countdown was on.
Tag Judith Eastman Matthew Harmon [NPC - PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Kenkrak]For a moment, Jenkins wondered if he should loop the Captain in. He had a strong feeling she'd overrule Taggert's order in a second, and throw the Gul away to get Matt. However, he knew that insubordination was generally frowned upon, and even if the Captain would've acted as he expected, she'd also be disappointed with him. Besides, Du Toollamé was a valued geopolitical asset, and Harmon... maybe he was a merc now, who knew? "Aye, sir."Soon enough, he got a lock. "I got the Gul, sir. Transporting now."And just as the transporter's distinctive hum concluded, and Du Toollamé appeared on the Kenkrak, something truly peculiar happened - the other submarine left their sensors, as though it disappeared, somewhere in the depths of the ocean. "What is this?" the Cardassian protested, now in the company of dreaded Starfleet. [The other Shubble]Through the craft's portholes, which grew ever dimmer, Matt (now without Du Toollamé's company) could recognize that they had gone deeper and deeper. In fact, they were on the very floor of the southern ocean, using sensor echoes to disappear.

[ CPO Kaya Som | Control Center, Spaceport HQ ]Someone noticed. Kaya's psychadelic algorithm noticed. But upon this discovery, the Trill engineer made no crow of triumph nor did she slam any big red buttons. Instead, she discreetly bumped Quinn's arm. On the screen, Kaya had trimmed and isolated a sequence of the output. It was a sensor gap failure alert re-written to look like one of the dozens and dozens of all-clears. Now that she had Quinn's attention, Kaya tapped the screen to extract the hidden coordinates of the hidden sensor gap. They were -12.32 by -137.30: leagues out into the southern ocean. After more than an two hours of this, she was sure they'd found what they'd been looking for. At Quinn's go-ahead, the coordinates were packaged and ready for distribution. "It's coming from inside the house," Kaya said quietly. The failure re-write trick was clumsy but effective in that it relied entirely on hiding a needle in a stack of needles. It relied on no one looking closely, data buried in a sea of otherwise useless data. Unable to help herself, Kaya lifted her head to look casually around the command center. Someone was about to lose their job. If it was Kel Kallis up on Level 6, Kaya would be embarrassed for her, such an ungraceful maneuver. This was definitely the arrogant blundering of someone with a nice office. [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Control Center, Spaceport HQ] Eventually, Quinn felt the subtle nudge from Kaya indicating that she had seen something. He casually gave her screen his attention and realized that they did have a sensor gap... as well as an attempt to conceal it. She wasted no time in prepping the coordinates for distribution. "Send those coordinates to the Captain and the search teams right away," he said softly. "Can you tell where it came from?"The young engineer confirmed that whomever was concealing had done so from within. His eyes immediately sought out the most proximal suspect, Trax. However, he seemed engaged with one of his subordinates. That didn't absolve him of suspicion, however. Yet, what had captured Quinn's attention was the sight of someone approaching: Kel Kallis. "Kaya," she said as she approached at a quick pace. "I mean... Chief Som." She assumed it was best to be professional while in the presence of Kaya's supervising officer. "I think there's something you should see." She was about to hold up the padd that was in her hand, when Director Ke called out. "Miss Kallis," he said approaching, "last time I checked, I was the director of this facility. Anything you have to report, you'll do so to me." He reached up and snatched the padd from her hand. "You can return to your duties."Kel's eyes narrowed as she stared at Ke. "There's been a security breach. Someone is tampering with the sys--""From what I see, it seems your command codes were the ones used to alter the system's records," Phass said looking at Kel. "I'm sure this is just some petty attempt to deflect our attentions.""If I had done it, why would I expose it?" Kel said. "Besides, I know the system well enough to make those adjustments and not get caught."It probably wasn't the best statement to make in that particular moment, but Quinn wasn't about to let this turn into a finger-pointing session. "Miss Kallis, is there anyone else that could have gained access to your clearance codes?"Kel's eyes stared at Phass Ke, though it was more of her anger at his accusing her than in response to Quinn's question. Yet, as she thought about it, her eyes moved across the control room. "Mr. Trax has access to everyone's personal clearance codes," she said. "Mr. Rin, see if you can have Mr. Trax join us over here," Quinn said to the young Bajoran. He then turned back to Kaya. "Chief, any ideas how to clear this up? Perhaps narrow down the origin of this patch?"

[Matthew Harmon - The Other Subble]Matthew was enjoying his wine when suddenly his unlikely makeshift drinking buddy disappeared. He wondered if it was the Mac or Arkanian security. "Uh, excuse me, mate," he said to the Caldonian, "What happened to Monsieur Du Toolome?"

[ Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle-Submersible Kenkrak] The moment Jenkins reported having the Cardassian in the transporter lock, Velal prepared her own console... and as soon as the fugitive materialized, she erected a forcefield around him. "Exactly what it looks like," she replied to his demand. "You're under arrest. Again." Jovireh wasn't thrilled with the order of Commander Harmon being a lower priority - the man had already been left behind once! - but she understood the strategic reasons behind the choice. They had no idea if he was on that vessel by his own free will or not, and du Toollame was a known threat they had been sent to apprehend. Although she didn't know the (former?) Intelligence Officer very well, and she fully believed he was an asshole, she didn't think he was a traitor. Hopefully they'd be able to stay in range long enough to get him, too. "Damnit!" Taggert growled as the other submersible suddenly disappeared from his screen. They may have the fugitive in custody, but he had no intentions of leaving a Starfleet officer - suspended or not - in the company of whomever had orchestrated this. "Lieutenant!" he barked over the sudden commotion of questions and demands. "If you want to get Harmon back, I need you to get them back on sensors! Jenkins, keep searching for Harmon's biosigns; get him over here the moment you're able to get a lock! Velal, see what information you can get from our guest." This time, it was the hybrid that received his steeled gaze as he glanced behind him. "Don't be shy."Jovireh swallowed at the order, nodding in acknowledgement. This would be the first time she'd ever done an interrogation alone, but they didn't have time to be nervous about it. Rising from her seat, she moved to stand in front of the forcefield, facing the Cardassian on the other side. "Where are they going?" She asked, her voice calm and level, her gaze unflinching.

[ Ensign Rin Zakir - Briefing Room #2, Spaceport HQ] Though he had been concentrating so much on his own work that he didn't notice the nudge from Som to Quinn (although it wouldn't have been all that subtle otherwise), it did not escape his attention when things began to escalate. First, after informing Quinn of her findings, Som was denied a PADD from Kallis containing some further findings. From Director Ke, no less, who then went on to accuse the woman of pretty much being behind the whole thing. Something the engineer denied very strongly. Yeah, very professional without more evidence than that, he thought as he once more glanced at his screen. Was that really all he had to go on? Som had beaten him to it, but it wasn't like it was a race. More of a concern was that now it had been revealed that Trax had access to all of the command codes. Coupled with the overheard statement from earlier, and it was a valid path to follow. The man had been very co operative with their investigation, but it was also possible that could also have been a front. Again, he wasn't willing to announce guilt before all other possibilities had been exhausted, so when he was tasked with finding him, Zak nodded and stood from his console. "Sir", he acknowledged the order, before heading back into the direction he had last seen Trax. Whoever the guilty party was, the net was closing in around them, and he would need to keep his guard up. "Mr Trax?", he called out, hoping the man wasn't so far away to not hear him. "Can I have another moment of your time please?", he added. He wondered if the director himself had access to any of the clearance codes, but again, until their was sufficient evidence, then despite the three suspects (in his eyes at least), then all were innocent until proven guilty. [Charlie Fox - Conference Room Z, 5th floor, Capitol, Arkaria]"Lieutenant," Charlie muttered absently in response to Josh's addressing Mabel as 'Miss'. She had no idea why he was doing that; it was something she'd only ever really seen command officers do, certainly not someone referring to another of equal rank. Her eyes were still on the read outs as the others spoke around her and she forced her internal rant regarding the outdated uses of titles that denoted whether or not women were married or single into a black box in her mind, to unwrap and get irritated over later. She was about to respond to Lieutenant Henriksen's statement, when the man of the hour himself arrived. Overall, she agreed with the plan of action. In her experience people in positions like Anka's began to talk, and quickly, once they realised they were being nailed to the wall. In order to escape it, they usually started naming names to share in the misery. Professional criminals weren't so easy - they sometimes had a code or a legitimate fear of reprisals, but politicians and those within that sphere, tended to be even more self-serving. Had she not experienced both sides of that fence, she might not have believed it. "Ah! Kellor!" She raised her hand, twisted it at the wrist, and Olsen spun into life to capture the manhandled aide from every angle. "Good, you're easy on the eye. That always makes for better numbers. They'll pick up your trial all over the quadrant!"Her voice was enthusiastic; her expression carrying a hint of a manufactured leer. She was playing her part. "Former aide of disgraced prefect and sexual predator conspires to free Cardassian murderer..." She waved her hands and pursed her lips, considering her by-line options. She'd purposely left all of the evidence projected over the conference desk.

[ LT Joshua Niles - Conference Room Z, 5th Floor, Capitol, Arkaria ]This was starting to get old. Granted, there were Lieutenants, and there were Lieutenants (even if those were still Junior Grade), and the authority that came from them was... variable. Working for someone of lower rank, that was nothing new for Niles. Hell, he'd seen a Master Chief, an engineer no less rather than one trained for ship-handling, left in command of the Mac and at first his Chief of Security was a Chief Petty Officer. But when it came to Henriksen? It was only fools of epic proportions who took her lightly, especially when she was so close to the Old Lady. And at this point, one Joshua Niles was certain that absolutely everything that happened with this particular detail would make its way back to her. Including his having the nerve to try and establish a strong base at a lower level of the chain of suspects to use up later, and having the absolute gall of not immediately making certain connections. And while he had seriously worked on his investigative technique in the last month, Charlie Fox was most certainly better at it than he was and he could think of but one person whose ability to work through records and files was superior to Henriksen's, and he was not it. But to be entirely ignored yet again... that was the worst part. Why had he not been relieved entirely if he was deemed to be so bloody useless? Was that just to push him to make another mistake? To push him to such a point of frustration that he would indeed lose control of his temper entirely and lash out? Well, he was getting near that point, especially given Mabel's suggestion to the journalist. They already had enough to thoroughly bury Anka without too much effort. And, there went Charlie, doing what she did best... and applying pressure through the use of her recording drone and starting to lay some groundwork. And even though it hadn't been discussed, well, there was time for the proverbial bad cop of this scene to make an appearance; and if word that he was a 'bad officer' had made it to Kallor Anka, even better if it meant he could generate a degree of fear. Now if only Mabel would see herself as the good cop of the scene... Rising from his chair, Niles nonchalantly refilled his cup of coffee-analogue before taking a slow, measured sip and turned towards the man of the hour. "Being tied to Vazk can't have done your career much good, can it, Mister Anka?" One more sip of the hot drink. Well, it was good, but it seemed it made his stomach sour much faster than coffee. Even better, as that would add to the anger and frustration he had to channel to come across as the most threatening person in the room. "But you know what else won't do you any favour? An account in Caldonian Dinars, opened and maintained by the Caldonian Foreign Office. That's not looking good, but the good news is that right now least of your worries are words like 'conflict of interests'. What should be a lot more worrisome to you are a series of payments, like to one Nella Pas whom we damn well know had a hand in getting a high value prisoner not only improperly incarcerated but also broken out of jail. We also have a Cardassian in custody who was loaded down with Caldonian equipment and I'm really looking forward to see what he might have to say about you. We also know about a pair of Y-4 shuttles. Nyberrite markings and Kzinti callsigns, registered to a Tzenkethi shell corporation. What are the odds we'll find that Caldonian slush fund behind those? And now that we've tracked down that account, I have to wonder, just how much more are we going to find to guarantee you never see daylight again? Oh, and before I forget, there was a dead body in the rubble of the explosion and under Federation law that's felony murder."His voice was like steel, cold and precise. He would have to come in heavy and hard, and the felony murder charge, that was a nice cherry on top. "I hope you're none too fond of daylight, Mister Anka, because while I don't know what Arkarian life expectancy looks like I don't expect you'll see much of it ever again."Now, hopefully that kind of initiative would be appreciated. And if it wasn't, well, it's not like things could get much worse for one Joshua Niles at this point.

He's hiding out in neutral space in one of the Y-4s."Nothing about Kellor suggested duplicity, except for the preposterous nature of the allegation - which, admittedly, wasn't the only bizarre thing about this case.

[ Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle-Submersible Kenkrak] It was somewhat reassuring to hear that Commander Harmon was, in fact, being held against his will. The other man was in enough trouble with Starfleet as it was. A growing sense of urgency filled the submersible as Jenkins announced the other team had sent coordinates for a potential opening in the grid. "Adjusting course and speed to intercept!" he replied, his focus now entirely on pushing the vessel as fast as it could safely go through the deep water. Well, that was a relief. It seemed the rescue no longer hinged entirely on Velal's interrogation skills. They weren't done yet, though. "The more you tell us, the more your cooperation will be taken into account at your sentencing. What do you know about the technology they're using to get past our sensors?" Knowing exactly how to bypass the cover would make finding and retrieving Harmon much easier. "Approaching the coordinates. Please tell me you've got something." Taggert asked Hudson and Jenkins as he slowed the vessel. They didn't need to find out what a full speed underwater collision would do to the submersible.

It was a statement, but Charlie was betting he'd confirm it all. [ LT Joshua Niles - Conference Room Z, 5th Floor, Capitol, Arkaria ]Well, that was fast. No negotiation, no asking for a deal, no refutation of anything. Just pretty much admitting to everything right then and there. And providing one name. Yatin. Instantly the image of the oily, pretentious Caldonian Foreign Office representative flashed in Niles' mind... and somehow he wasn't surprised that he would be named as the Caldonian connection to all of this. Now the question was why. But regardless of what that answer would be, this would be opening a serious political can of worms that could have strategic implications for the Federation, and would need careful handling. But, that was above his level all right. And, truth be told, beyond his caring; he was told to investigate, he investigated; even if it would lead to some rather impolitic results. "I don't suppose you happen to know why Yatin wanted Toollame freed, do you?"Politics, hateful game. Of course someone as greasy as Yatin would find a way to weasel out of getting detained and interrogated, and pressing the issue would make things even more interesting with the Caldonians.
