[ Ensign Rin Zakir - Briefing Room #2, Spaceport HQ] An hour had passed since the team had reconvened in the briefing room, and things were starting to happen. They had now been tasked with tracking a submersible vessel, seemingly harbouring the fugitive cardassian, Du Toollamé. It wasn't exactly what he had been expecting, but then it was always a good idea to expect the unexpected. Thankfully, it seemed as though Trax was continuing to co operate, despite the what he had overheard from the security chief still being very much on his mind. The same could be said for Director Ke, though his assistance had apparently been somewhat more reluctant. No matter, as after a brief tutorial of the systems he would be working on, Zak got to work on searching through what would be one heck of a hay stack to find a needle in. Silently praying to the Prophets as he worked, he had already noticed the similarities in the tactical systems, even as Quinn pointed them out to him. It made sense to employ the use of modified sensors operating on low theta-wave frequencies, in order to track their target underwater. He glanced toward the gaps that had been pointed out on the screen, understanding what he needed to look for. "On it, sir", he assured the more senior officer, his fingers dancing across the keys of the console as he made the necessary adjustments. Isaiah Quinn Kaya Som

[Charlie Fox - Conference Room Z, 5th floor, Capitol, Arkaria]Charlie read the transcript once, frowned, and then started again. She lay the PADD down on the table and then picked up another, musing aloud as she typed in some queries. "What was it that Palkor said earlier about the number 37?" She pursed her mouth, chewing on the inside of her cheek for a few moments before she found the answer herself using the limited database access she'd been given. "It's pronounced the same way as the word 'Outsider', as per an old language of the southerners." She looked up at Mabel and Josh, then pulled her feet down off the chair so she could lean forward as she spoke. "Ang and Kan seem to think of it as a joke. And according to this exchange, the idea was apparently planted in Kan's head by someone called Nella." [ LT Joshua Niles - Conference Room Z, 5th Floor, Capitol, Arkaria ]One thing for certain, there was a great deal of traffic to filter through. Much of it was truly routine, and without direct access to the ship's computers, a PADD was a pretty bloody stupid device so far as modern computing technology went. But he knew one thing: if there was any kind of evidence of an insider, he damn well needed to find some of it himself; he'd wound up yet again on the Old Lady's shit list because he would not let that line of inquiry go even impolitic as it was to insist on the integrity of the investigation. Even if he was right, he knew it would hurt; but if he'd been wrong, he might as well go for a long walk out a short airlock for such a fate would surely be preferable to what would await him otherwise. And though just as Charlie mentioned what she was working on, including a name, that same name appeared, flashing on Josh's own list. Apparently, something had tripped the PADD's search functions... and that name was Nella Pas. "I have a Nella here, a Nella Pas who's on Minister Palkor's staff. Just give me a minute."A few keystroke brought up not one, but three conversations that had been flagged as unusual and he quickly read them over. Once. Twice. Thrice. "Son of a bitch," he muttered, his voice cold yet imbued with a hard edge even as his eyes narrowed but burned with a dangerous light. "I got something."With a few taps of his PADD he shared his findings with Mabel and Charlie, and he couldn't help but exult in his findings... and in knowing that Sleebaggo had been wrong in deciding that looking into insiders was unwarranted. "I have a Nella Pas in contact with a Bram Krakis in Central Management at the prison. There's a lot that's been deleted, but reading between the lines it confirms there are insiders."Then, he had an idea, but one that was beyond him to implement. "Mabel, I would need you to ask the Captain for more access to the Department of the Interior's messaging logs. I need the full thing, including what's been deleted in whatever we were handed. And Nella Pas' complete comms logs, and financials. She looks like she's calling the shots for part of the operation, but something tells me she's not the one running the show."Now, that would be a test all right. Would Mabel, who for all intents and purposes was pretty much the Old Lady's right hand and understudy, actually consider what he was asking for, or reject it out of hand because of what had transpired earlier... [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Conference Room Z]While Mabel's own documents were underwhelming, both Fox and Niles had gotten a veritable treasure trove. "I don't think we can get the full financials under Arkarian law, but we have her quarterly financial disclosures," she stated. "Charlie, I'm sending you Ms. Pas's calendar for that week."While Nella Pas's financial disclosures were quite long, it was clear that she was in debt as of the last quarter, and the quarter before that. She wasn't well-paid, but she was clearly a hedonist. Her journal would show a handful of meetings with a Mr. Kellor Anka, at various cafés.

[Charlie Fox - Conference Room Z, 5th floor, Capitol, Arkaria]Charlie stood and stepped over toward the small unit that housed this miraculous energy hotness. She refreshed her cup as she listened to Josh work through his thoughts aloud. She had a sneaking suspicion that financials would be off the table; that would be highly irregular on most planets at this early stage of evidence collection, but remained quiet. She was sitting back down, ready to dig in to more transcripts when Mabel told her that she'd be receiving Nella Pas' calendar. With a nod, Charlie placed her drink on the table, and picked up her PADD again. The woman's schedule was filled with things that she would expect: meetings, calls, lunches... She paused, eyes narrowing when she noticed a name recur multiple times, and always at what would appear to be locations outside of offices. She ran a search for ANKA, KELLOR. Almost immediately, the information flashed on her screen, and Charlie automatically fell back against her chair, bouncing a little with the movement. She added Anka's image to one of the view screens in the conference room, splitting it so it would show stills of everything useful they'd gathered so far. "Pas has met with this man, several times in public places, and never the same place twice. His name is Kellor Anka, and he's a former aide of Vazk's." The plot was literally thickening before their very eyes. "Palkor mentioned Vazk earlier when I questioned him, I believe accidentally; said he'd cut off contact with him as soon as the investigation started." If Nella Pas was being paid for the risk she was taking, it wasn't via any method they could likely trace. That left loyalty and ambition as logical motivators, though to Charlie the waters appeared a little more muddied than that. With a few more taps, she'd located Vazk and displayed both his image and public record. "Former Prefect Vazk was implicated in a sex scandal and was forced to resign. Stellar citizen," she ended, tone wry.

Granted, full financials might be difficult to obtain, but full comms logs? At least he hoped that much could be wrangled. Well, at least the ones from the DoI would be nice, to fill in the blanks that had been redacted in what had been made available thus far. "Wait a second... while we're talking about information, can you see if we can get Bram Krakis' comms logs as well? Something tells me he's not as security-conscious as Pas, so we might be able to get the deleted lines through him."However, what other information was available was actually useful, to some degree. Pas' quarterly disclosures were not looking too good. In fact, it looked like she was well on her way to get into debt to her eyeballs. And with the mention of a disgraced prefect and Pas meeting with his former aide, the waters did not get any clearer, but murkier instead. In fact, it was looking like they were heading towards too much information rather than not enough. "Charlie, do you think Vazk is linked to this case at all or are we looking at a red herring there?" Perhaps the Old Lady didn't believe in red herrings, but then again she was an engineer, not a tactical officer for whom Sun Tzu had been required reading and who firmly believed that indeed all warfare was based on deception. "And come to think of it Pas being broke but enjoying a lifestyle she can't afford makes her vulnerable to being bought off. But maybe there is something else we should be asking: who on Arkaria would stand most to benefit from Toollame escaping? Who gets egg on their face from the escape?"

[Matthew Harmon - Subble] The Gul was far far too French for Matthew’s liking, but such was his feelings of nihilism that he didn’t care. “Cheers,” he said raising his glass before taking a sip. Then the Caldonian entered. He still hadn’t managed to figure out the connection between them and the Cardassians. That could be for others to figure out. Those that weren’t suspended. “Over so soon? But I was enjoying the view, mate.” _____________________________________ [LTJG Chloe Hudson - A different Subble] “Sensors locked,” Chloe said with a hint of excitement as she locked sensors onto object. “It’s a submersible!” she confirmed. [ Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle-Submersible Kenkrak] Pierce could feel his own excitement rising at the confirmation of their target. "Intercepting in two minutes. Can we get a read on any biosigns?" Could they really be so lucky to catch them before they left the planet? Their "informant" had mentioned two submersibles... He only prayed they weren't chasing down the wrong one. "There's a lot of interference," Velal replied, her fingers flying across the controls. "Attempting to clear it up." If whomever was controlling the other submersible was going through this much trouble to conceal themselves, surely it had to be the one they were looking for, right?

{Quoted Posts} [ CPO Kaya Som | Control Center, Spaceport HQ ]It was always nice to be appreciated for one's talents, to actually get to use the hard-won skills of pesky adolescence, getting vindication that one obsession or another had practical application beyond mischief. Thus Kaya was thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to outsmart someone who thought they were clever. It was just a shame she couldn't show off for Kel. Kaya had in the time alloted set up a filter of sorts that took in all the sensor readings and output a meta-layer. This would hopefully light up any data that might be mottled with fingerprints or anything that didn't quite match. Of course, she'd color-coded it, so the data stream going by was properly psychadelic. Kaya leaned over the panel, resting on her elbows, her face illuminated by the rainbow. And then something struck her, an idea. She rose from her chair, still bent over the panel and started keying in commands. "They're going to hide the hole. They're going to hide the hole," she whispered. "That's what I'd do. They have to figure we're going to be watching the gaps, but who's going to notice if a random gap isn't there? We have to watch for a scrubbed entry." Kaya's fingers flew as she adjusted her filter program. [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Control Center, Spaceport HQ] Time was steadily ticking away. While there was still evidence to support the fact that du Toollamé was still on the planet, there was no telling how much longer that would be the case. Quinn exhaled slowly as the search continued. Ensign Rin was working quickly and steadily to track any semblance of the submersible with theta-waves hopefully acting as a little blood in the water to bring them a little closer. Meanwhile, Kaya had come up with an entirely different approach to the search. He turned to the Engineer as she expressed her theory. "Hide the hole," he repeated. What she was saying certainly made sense. He didn't want to disturb the chief as she worked, but the one question plaguing his mind would likely lead them to the personal responsible. "Let me know as soon as you find what isn't there, Chief." It was hardly something that needed to be said. Quinn's eyes scanned his surroundings. There were only so many people that had the ability to pull off what Kaya was suggesting. Director Ke. He undoubtedly had access to all of the systems. Presently, he was spending more time fending calls from the Interior and the bigwigs of several corporations. Tullin Trax. Being the senior manager of security, he had just as much access as Director Ke, and he could direct resources and the search wherever he decided. Kel Kallis. She was the most familiar with the system, had complained about the maintenance falling behind and was trying to hold the entire net together. Somewhere in the southern hemisphere...The creatures of the sea veer away from whatever this creature is souring the water. Though a few of the smaller creatures fall victim to the low levels of radiation, and their small bodies float on the surface of the waves. Even as easy pickings, predators that typically pursue them from beneath the surface, as well as the avian predators from above, ignore the easy game. At the Spaceport...Another gap... this one too close. It takes a pair of key strokes to conceal the opening from wondering eyes. No alarm, so no one noticed. A heavy sigh passes through a pair of lips. The single assuring thought was that this would all be over soon. Just need to keep things going a little longer.

His scandal had rocked Arkaria. Niles seemed to be looking in a different direction. "Lieutenant, looking at Bram Krakis is punching down. We need to go up," she said, trying to project authority, while eyeing Charlie for confirmation. Mabel didn't know, but a quick search would reveal that deletions in the Arkarian government's instant messaging system were not recoverable. "Vazk or not, let's look at Kellor Anka. Charlie, I'll give you his disclosures. Mr. Niles, his calendar."Now an employee of the Foreign Office, Kellor Anka had a lot of travel under his belt, including to Caldonia and Nyberr, as Niles would see. Charlie would see he had a lot of foreign currency holding, including a hefty Caldonian Dinar account, which had recorded a handful of recent disbursements.

Let me show you le periscope," the Gul exclaimed. "Computer, deploy periscope."
The periscope began to move, until the Caldonian operator hollered an opposite order. "Computer, retract periscope.""Alas. We shall see the view from space," Du Toollamé lamented.

[ Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle-Submersible Kenkrak] "On it," Velal replied to the other PO's suggestion when the Commander didn't object. She filtered through the sensor's frequencies, trying to decide which might be the most likely to catch the sort of disturbances they'd need to look for. This was where an engineer or scientist would come in handy, but since they were all working on the spaceport, she had to make do with her limited systems knowledge. "There!" she called out triumphantly as a green flash lit up her screen. "A sonar pulse disruption, fourteen klicks off our starboard bow.""Adjusting course," Taggert replied, adjusting the navigation as indicated, unable to keep the hopeful note from his voice. "Well done you two." Sure, it might be too early for congratulations yet, but they at least had more to go off of than they did a few minutes ago. [LTJG Chloe Hudson - A different Subble] “Sensors locked,” Chloe said with a hint of excitement as she locked sensors onto object. “It’s a submersible!” she confirmed. [ Lt. Cmdr. "And, no, lowering it. Interesting."Elsewhere, the crew could see the other vessel making a sharp turn to the east, and diving - surprisingly - down.

[Charlie Fox - Conference Room Z, 5th floor, Capitol, Arkaria]When Mabel looked at her, Charlie nodded in agreement. The trail was leading upward, so they should follow it. Potential periphery players could be weighed later, when everything else had been exhausted. She considered Josh's question about Vazk, but she had no real answer. "At this stage, we've merely made some professional connections to him, there's nothing else to suggest he's involved. But Anka likely would have learned a lot from a man like Vazk."She opened up his public record accounts, and her eyes scanned through them quickly. First pass was always quick; it would tell her how much time or energy she'd need to spend on it. A brow arched as her gaze followed a very particular path. "There are recorded outgoing transfers here, originating from a Caldonian fund." Again she cast the information to the primary viewscreen but her eyes remained rooted to her own computer as she began to try and follow the money. "Sunrise Inc. On Nyberr. Only initials, no fixed address, shell corporation. Skirted Holdings - shell. Arkaria Strategic Growth Capital. Flying Pig Acquisitions. Bulging Pant Partners? Shell, shell, shell."Just as she was about to give up, the search algorithm she'd applied hit pay dirt, and pinged. "And Nella Pas." Surprised that they'd actually managed to find something almost concrete, she finally looked up.

[NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Conference Room Z]Vazk. Surprised that they'd actually managed to find something almost concrete, she finally looked up. [ LT Joshua Niles - Conference Room Z, 5th Floor, Capitol, Arkaria ]Somehow, Niles was not entirely surprised about being denied this particular request. Hell, all the physical evidence at the scene had come up blank, though through no fault of his own, but it seemed as though that too was being held against him. But creating a strong base to at least be able to confront one of the lower-level players to roll up those further up the chain was a valid investigative technique; it had been what had led up to Toollame being taken, through his own analysis no less. Henriksen, though, was entirely the Captain's creature, and at this point if he even suggested something as fundamental as the matter-antimatter ratio was always 1:1, he would likely find his claim challenged, or thrown right out, unless someone else said the exact same thing. Much like when he had brought up the possibility of an inside connection even before Sleebaggo had decided to insult him. And now, he was left looking at someone's calendar. There was the usual laundry list of domestic stuff, meetings with Nella Pas as had already been mentioned, and plenty that took him off-world. But as a Foreign Office official, that wasn't entirely unusual. However, as of late that had been quite a few trips to Caldonia, and to the Nyberrites. In and of itself that hardly meant much, but if some context could be obtained... And given Charlie just mentioned a Caldonian account being used, and some transactions leading to Nella Pas? That was hardly a smoking gun, but it was one more link in the chain. And, just like her, he sent off those travel dates to the screens around the room, and sought to correlate them with information tied to that Caldonian account. "Unless there's new arrangements being discussed between Arkaria and the Caldonians and Nyberrites, I'm seeing more travel to either than there ought to be. But nothing conclusive."And this time, he could not keep his frustration out of his voice. Everything he had looked at, it had either come out as inconclusive or barely supporting anything else that had been discovered by others, assuming he was not being summarily dismissed right out of hand. At this point, he was entirely certain he would be held responsible for every last 'inconclusive' finding that had cropped up through no fault of his own as well as having the nerve to seek to preserve the integrity of the investigation against someone who seemed more interested in politics than results.

[NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Conference Room Z]Mabel's interest in what Charlie had found was dampened by Josh's sour-grapes attitude. Rather than looking for connections between what they'd found, he seemed to be looking at how he had been wronged, and how he'd ended up - by happenstance - with the less dramatic piece of evidence. "Hold on, Caldonia. The Cardassian that Taggert's team found had a lot of Caldonian equipment on him," she observed. Mabel eyed Charlie, suspecting that Josh was too busy feeling sorry for himself to connect the dots. "What do your investigative spidey-senses say? Where does the story lead?" the youngster asked.

[ CPO Kaya Som | Control Center, Spaceport HQ ]Someone noticed. Kaya's psychadelic algorithm noticed. But upon this discovery, the Trill engineer made no crow of triumph nor did she slam any big red buttons. Instead, she discreetly bumped Quinn's arm. On the screen, Kaya had trimmed and isolated a sequence of the output. It was a sensor gap failure alert re-written to look like one of the dozens and dozens of all-clears. Now that she had Quinn's attention, Kaya tapped the screen to extract the hidden coordinates of the hidden sensor gap. They were -12.32 by -137.30: leagues out into the southern ocean. After more than an two hours of this, she was sure they'd found what they'd been looking for. At Quinn's go-ahead, the coordinates were packaged and ready for distribution. "It's coming from inside the house," Kaya said quietly. The failure re-write trick was clumsy but effective in that it relied entirely on hiding a needle in a stack of needles. It relied on no one looking closely, data buried in a sea of otherwise useless data. Unable to help herself, Kaya lifted her head to look casually around the command center. Someone was about to lose their job. If it was Kel Kallis up on Level 6, Kaya would be embarrassed for her, such an ungraceful maneuver. This was definitely the arrogant blundering of someone with a nice office. Isaiah Quinn, Rin Zakir

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - Subble]
As they cleared up the interfearnce, Chloe began to get a clearer picture of the other submersible. It was larger than theirs, and had a full crew complement. "I'm picking up 12 life signs. One of them is Du Toollamé, there's two Caldonian lifesigns, three Naussicans, a number of Cardassians, and...wait...that can't be right," as she ran detailed ID scans to see if they knew anyone else there she picked up Matthew. That couldn't be right. What was he doing? Was he working with them?! Or on some undercover mission? "They've got Matthew...Commander Harmon," she said. He'd better have a pretty good explanation for whatever he was doing over there. Then the periscope suddenly raised and then almost immediately dropped, before they took a deep plunge downwards. "I think they've spotted us, sir." [Matthew Harmon - The Other Subble]"I do so enjoy the sealife," Matthew sighed sadly when the Caldonian ordered the periscope to be retracted before he had a chance to look. "The view isn't quite so nice from space, mon amie...oh well." He took another sip from his win as he despaired at the rudeness of the Caldonians.

[ Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle-Submersible Kenkrak] Jovireh's head snapped around when Chloe declared Commander Harmon was also on that submersible. That was definitely the last thing she'd been expecting to hear, but she tried to avoid jumping to conclusions about the possible reasons behind it. Taggert controlled his reaction a little better, his gaze focused on the helm and navigation controls in front of him. But if one was paying attention, they'd notice his back stiffen, his jaw clench, his eyes flash. When he spoke, his voice was even harder than usual. "Increasing speed to intercept. Jenkins, get a transporter lock on du Toollame and Commander Harmon. As soon as we're in range, get them over here." He turned then, his sharp gaze locking onto the younger man. "The fugitive is our top priority. Understand?" If they only had time to transport one person, that person needed to be the Gul. They could figure out what to do about Harmon later. One submersible followed the other, steadily closing the gap between them. The countdown was on.
