(He wasn’t actually interested in buying one of the figurines, but he was interested in attractive Betazoids.) (Apparently.) Then he turned back to her with amusement when she said she had named hers after Harmon. “I suppose there is a resemblance, if you squint.” He paused as he remembered the rift between her and Harmon, and the man’s continued absence. Maybe when they got back to the station, he should make more of an effort to find him, and see what it was like to be friends under ‘normal’ circumstances. Whatever that meant. Of course, there was nothing to be done about that now. “Sounds good to me,” Shavan agreed to go with Charlie for the time being. But before they could continue on their way they were approached by another human woman, who was also admiring the art. “Hi,” he greeted Ronnie, then hastily amended Charlie’s exaggerated introduction. “Just Shavan is fine.” He wasn’t one for formality, especially while off duty. [ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Town Square - Serenity] Left Ear had had to gather a good amount of courage to return to the Serenity colony. She'd spent the first little while jerking her head around at every odd sound, her ears and nose twitching madly as she tried to catalog all of the sights and sounds. They hadn't been required to wear uniforms, but the cadet had gotten used to how much easier it was to carry her things that way than in a satchel, and gave her a place to keep a combadge. Instead of her cadet colors, though, Left Ear had replicated a harness with a bright flowered pattern in blue, orange and green, with the attached pouches in the same design. It allowed her to carry a tricorder, medkit, a couple of usefuls, a knife and a snack and still drop to all fours for running or climbing or fighting. After awhile, the Sivaoan started to relax as the joy and excitement of the locals breached her nerves. Left Ear was still extra-vigilant, but she began drifting around the square to examine all of the games and wares, giving the beer tent a wide berth, a wrinkled nose and a sneeze. She'd spent long time watching the serenite blowers. She planned to buy a piece before returning to the ship. She also tried every kind of food that was on offer, having to take a few moments behind a tree to clean powdered sugar from her fur after eating a donut. Now Left Ear wandered and watched people as she munched on some sort of meat-on-a-stick. She noticed one of the Mac's crew members standing off by himself at the edge of the crowds and sidled over. She didn't know him, but recognized his face from looking through the crews medical files. Unsure whether Vulbrix was deliberately avoiding people, Left Ear stopped a few feet away and raised her tail within his line of sight, waving the tip slightly in greeting. ' Hello,' she said casually. ' I'm Left Ear to-Ennien.' She knew his name already, but had learned this song and dance of greetings from observation over the last year. Tag Myker Vulbrix [ Myker Vulbrix - Town Square, Serenity] The Betazoid was actively avoiding the worst of the crowds, it was common knowledge to anyone that knew him that he didn’t do so well in crowds. He could and would hold a conversation with people but to interact within a large group was far too much of a challenge for the telepath. So being off to the side was hardly unusual for him, a keen observer made him aware of things others may not be even without his telepathic skills. He could see various foods and items the vendors had on sale from where he stood and he considered investigating further but the sounds emanating from the beer tent were enough to shut that idea down. The hum of activity was pleasant, the wailing of liberated, drunken colonists was not. He wouldn’t be surprised if the voices from the Mac crew joined in at some point, it would sound the same just with that chauvinistic edge that came with being part of or working with the federation. While Myker found the songs to be agonising he understood liberation, he understood the colonists desire to celebrate, to have a moment where things were normal and peaceful. He was also well aware it wasn’t that simple, had he opened his mind to those around him no doubt there would be feelings and thoughts beyond simply euphoria drifting into his head. Myk’s attention was easily captured by the tail that was suddenly in his field of vision. He didn’t know the person...or cat behind the tail personally but knew they were part of the USS Mac crew too. His attention now on them, Myker Vulbrix. He greeted, and while he was avoiding people, he wasn’t altogether rude. He was trying to know more of his crew after all, it was important since they spent much of their time on the ship. It’s lively isn’t it. He noted about the atmosphere, his eyes again scanning the area falling momentarily on the beer tent again. He wasn’t particularly concerned, he was simply making a constant assessment of the situation. It truly seemed this colony had moved on from the horrors of before, they’d made a better world for themselves and let the past be exactly that or so it seemed. Left Ear to-Ennien[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Town Square - Serenity] The cadet was thrilled that Myker had responded to her. Left Ear was a sociable being and she enjoyed getting to know her crewmates. He hadn't told her how to address him, though she hadn't done so either, so she played it safe. ' Myk-ker Vulbrix-x,' she repeated, stumbling slightly over the difficult sounds that Sivaoan didn't have. ' Nice to meet you. Have you tried any of the food? I don't know what this meat is, but it's delicious.' The felinoid took another bite and looked out over the crowd. Her ears tilted toward the beer tent, at least one of the loud voices familiar to her. ' Sounds like everyone is having a lot of fun.' Tag Myker Vulbrix

[Charlie Fox - Town Square, Serenity]Charlie hadn't been on Serenity the first time herself, so she couldn't compare first-hand either. Yet this laidback, celebratory atmosphere certainly seemed like a far cry from what had befallen the crew and the colonists the first time around. Part of the reason she was here was to set the record straight about dangers of colony life, one way or another. The odds of a recurrence of the strange, very specific issues the raiders had last time were very slim. "We were just talking about getting a beer," she said when Ronnie made the suggestion. "I was going to be all responsible and eat something first, but we can do that afterward." There was a smell of charring meat coming from somewhere that had awakened her appetite, and those fried doughnuts looked pretty inviting, too, but they were standing right at the beer tent. It was a sign. From inside the tent came sounds of celebration, and more than once she could hear Kaya's voice above the others. With a grin she stepped to one side. "After you." Then, in an aside to Shavan, she added, "Maybe you can bring a refreshment to Andrus. He looks thirsty." Naturally, she'd caught his winning smile and the artist's responding wink earlier. She knew neither would need much encouragement, but Charlie couldn't resist being an irritant. It was part of who she was. "Can't bring you any where..." she muttered, amusement in her voice as she approached the tent.

He said looking around again now too. He picked out the Betazoid colonists quickly but didn't plan to introduce himself. [ LT Joshua Niles - Town Square, Serenity Colony ]{Quoted Posts} [Town Square - Serenity] [ Mara - Town Square] Business appeared to be going well as Mara finished yet another batch of doughnuts. Appreciating the custom especially from the Mac crew as Jovireh stopped by on the way over to Thea and Isaiah. She would understand if they wanted to avoid her but thankfully so far that hadn't been the case. Adding some powdered vanilla sugar to the new batch and after having a brief chat with Hendricks. The Colony leader smiled warmly as Lieutenant Niles approached, no doubt courtesy of Thea. She would thank her friend later or commiserate depending on how this exchange went as she greeted Josh. " Hi there, Lieutenant, could I interest you in a doughnut or two?".
Thea tag Isaiah Quinn Jovireh Velal , Thea & Mara tag Joshua Niles While he certainly would have been a third nacelle, Niles knew that being in the Skipper's immediate orbit would have shielded him of much interaction. That would have been a nice safety blanket at this point, and gone a long way in preventing anything... untowards from happening. But then again, how was he supposed to show he was trying to improve and rehabilitate himself if he refused to take any risks at all, even when he had a less than lively trust in his own judgement; and what did not help was that he harboured serious doubts as to what trust anyone else, especially those who held his future in their hands, had in him at all. And now, there he was, heading towards a stand... manned by the very woman who had been blackmailed into selling them out to those thugs. That was just lovely, and he found himself wondering whether the Captain had known this would be an encounter he would have actively tried to avoid the whole time he was dirtside. But if anything her motivations were beyond him, and frankly none of his business. That strong suggestion had been made, he had complied, and now he was committed. "Miss Rexan," he started if a little coolly. However, he did try to remember that she had been forced into this, that there was literally a phaser to the entire colony's head and a deep breath followed. "I'll certainly try one, thank you. I'm certainly glad to see that the colony has recovered and is thriving now."Yes, for now, avoiding poking the proverbial bear was probably a good idea, and he most certainly would not mind having another presence at hand, as he was not fully trusting of his temper either...

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Serenity - Town Square]After much deliberation, Syl finally decided on a small painting that would liven up Eliska quarters without taking up much space. After complimenting the artist, thanking her profusely and adding a little extra to the payment, she tucked the painting away in the bag she had brought specifically for souvenirs. Mission accomplished, she allowed the enticing aroma of freshly baked doughnuts to lure her back to the other side of the square. However, just a few stalls down from her destination she got distracted by another farmer selling some sort of alcoholic cider made from fruit native to the planet. Thoroughly intrigued, she stopped to try some. She was, after all, off duty... And from the voices coming from the beer tent, she wasn't the only one partaking.

Left Ear to-Ennien[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Town Square - Serenity] ' Myk-k,' Left Ear said again, still struggling with the last part. It just wasn't a sound in Sivaoan, and despite speaking very good English by this point, all of the Sivaoans had difficulty with the hard 'k' and hissing 's' sounds. Her tail, which had relaxed to wave gently near the ground behind her, sprang into a corkscrew at Myk's joke about the meat. 'Wouldn't mind if it were some grabfoot...or tritter,' Left Ear said, baring her teeth at the kebab and deliberately tearing some off roughly. Grabfoots[fn]chicken-sized, dinosaur-like animals from Sivao[/fn] were just plain good eating, but after the tritter scare on the last mission, Left Ear wouldn't mind sinking her teeth into one of them as well. Left Ear nodded in agreement as the Betazoid continued. Her tail dropped and her voice was a little sober when she replied, ' I am. Now. The last time we were here, it was...bad. I think most of us were nervous to return, but it's hard not to be affected by the atmosphere. This reminds me a lot of our camps back on Sivao. I've missed that.' [ Mara - Town Square, Serenity] The cool response that she received from Niles caught in Mara's chest as if it was restricting her heart like a vice. It appeared that it would take more than doughnuts and a warm friendly welcome to change the Lieutenant's perception of her. However the Trill wasn't about to let it defeat her as he then agreed to try one of the doughnuts before commenting about the colony. Mara hoped that he was being sincere or perhaps it was just forced small talk when he'd rather be somewhere else but here. " One doughnut with vanilla sugar coming right up and thank you, it took a lot of hard work but it was worth it, in order to see the colony survive".There was honesty in her response as she bagged up one of the doughnuts and handed it over. Unsure as to whether the conversation would continue, yet Mara hoped that it would in order to clear any residual animosity. If not then at least she had tried to mend the bridge so to speak. A curious saying but an appropriate one considering the situation that had led them here.

[ LT Joshua Niles - Town Square, Serenity Colony ]Well, if the look on Mara Rexan's face was any indication, she was about as comfortable with the notion of their meeting as one Lieutenant Niles was. Though, that might be on him as he made use of forced cool civility as a means of keeping his own temper in check. And when he was presented with one such doughnut, still hot from the oil it had come from, he worked it out of its paper bag and took a bite... and even without scanning the damn thing to see if anything would not play nice with his medication. It was not, after all, as though Sickbay wasn't just a transport away... but it turned out quite good. Mind, there was something he couldn't put his finger on, probably something with the locally grown grain used in the flour or somesuch, but it certainly wasn't unpleasant. And, while he enjoyed the taste of the pastry, he took a deep breath. "Look, the Captain must have thought it was a good idea we talked otherwise I don't think she would have specifically suggested visiting this stand. But then again, she's also a lot smarter than I am. I'm really glad the colony is doing well, and while you might be a perfectly nice person most of the time, I have a really hard time getting past how you sold us out to those thugs. Why didn't you warn us when we were in orbit? We could have stopped them on the spot, if we'd known." He managed another bite of the donut. Granted, it wasn't like the apple cider or maple syrup one he had grown up with in Eastern Ontario, but they were pretty good regardless. "Can you help me understand this?"

But on a more pleasant note, he’d also been thinking of going to the beer tent before running into them both. So he had no objection, and agreed to the suggestion with a grin. He wasn’t sure if it would have Andorian ale, since most of what was being sold had been made in the colony, but that was just fine. “We’ll just have to try it and find out. Responsibility can come later.”
Or not. Apparently Charlie had caught the look shared between him and the handsome artist. “Does he? In that case, I guess I’ll have to,” he leaned in and replied with a shameless smirk as they reached the entrance. Shavan had already decided to pay a visit to Andrus’s stall… and return when the outdoor market was closing up. With that, he stepped into the already crowded tent, and soon turned back to the others with a beer in hand. Veronica Li Charlie Fox

{Quoted Posts} [Town Square - Serenity] Thea smiled as Jovireh responded to Isaiah's teasing before the Chief thanked Thea and told her that she appreciated the CO's trust. When it came to the security of the crew and being planetside there hadn't been any hesitation or doubt. Something that Thea always instilled in her officers and seeing them thrive never failed to make her proud. " Anytime Chief and I appreciate what you've done" Thea replied, as Jovireh and Isaiah then acknowledged Niles. Of course Thea wasn't completely naive in having the two work together, especially with the Lieutenant's less than stellar track record of late. Although hoped that he would learn from this and put his ego aside if he had any chance of breaking free from the reputation he currently had. Even his hesitant answer in response to her suggestion of trying the doughnuts, wouldn't deter her from her goal. Things needed to be settled regardless of earlier mistrust and relationships mended so hopefully this wouldn't backfire on her. " Good idea and please have fun Mr Niles " she said sincerely, echoing her Boyfriend's sentiment before he spoke to Jovireh once more. His gentle chuckling and ribbing was synonymous with everything that Thea loved about him and the CO might be off duty but she was interested in what Jovireh's answer would be. That in itself had Thea thinking of her own plans with Isaiah apart from the dancing. [CPO Jovireh Velal - Serenity - Town Square]When the Lieutenant left as quickly as he had arrived, Jov watched him go, her lips pursed in thought. The empath had felt the bristle of something unpleasant, but she didn't have a chance to pinpoint it before he walked away. To his credit, however he was feeling towards her, he was trying to keep it to himself. Even so, it would probably be a good idea to talk to him about it at some point. Not right now, though. Isaiah's joking tone pulled her out of her thoughts, and she turned back to him with a grin. "Honestly... I hadn't planned that far ahead. I was more focused on the people than what they were offering." Although there were a few people that had caught her attention... [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Town Square, Serenity] Thea seemed to have similar words for the departing Lieutenant who made his way towards Mara, appearing to sample her donuts. As the conversation turned back to Jovireh, she admitted to not having planned that far ahead in terms of anything specific. She mentioned that she had been more focused on people than what they were offering. It made him wonder if her focus was personal or professional. Of course, he felt it wasn't his place to ask if it proved to be the former. "Well, the people of Serenity have proven to be quite unique in my opinion," Isaiah offered, but he had no way of knowing if it was the locals that Jov had been focusing on. "You know, Thea and I were just about to enjoy a dance," Isaiah stated. He didn't do so to make Jovireh feel like a third wheel, and thus amended his words potentially giving the security chief a reason to explore it herself. "I imagine you may make quite a few people's day if you shared a dance with them." Isaiah looked over at Thea to see if she felt the same way, or had a another suggestion to offer Jovireh.

[ Mara - Town Square, Serenity] Whilst she waited for the telltale sign of enjoyment that only freshly made doughnuts could bring, as well as the inevitable reaction to her response. Mara began to realise that Niles might be the toughest one to get through too. Her plan to speak to those from the Mac who had experienced the worst during the unspoken times, all rested on this exchange. So realistically she wasn't disappointed when Niles then decided to be honest with her. Mara appreciated his candor, however harshly it might sound. He had every right to be angry, to lash out as it were. However he also didn't know her properly and was basing his perceptions of her from one terrible experience. Still she listened, letting him vent before he took another bite of doughnut and asked her to help him understand. For a moment, Mara didn't say anything, other than to gesture for Hendricks to take over, before leaving the stall in his capable hands. Joining Niles on the other side, Mara looked at him with sincerity as she answered him. " Thea is a smart woman but don't undermine yourself Lieutenant" she began. " I appreciate your honesty and know that given the choice, you wouldn't be here right now. However you are and believe me when I say, never judge or assume until you hear the truth. The regret I feel over that day is a burden that I'll always carry with me, but given the circumstances I had no choice. I wanted to warn you but when faced with death and my people being taken, not to mention being sent body parts as a result of them being tortured. As well having Tobias's gang watching my every move, with a phaser trained on me, I was helpless to do anything".Mara paused as she looked out across the square, at the happy faces and people enjoying themselves. " I don't expect you to understand or for us to be the best of friends. But that's the truth and I sincerely hope, that you can move on from this in time as I've been learning to do".*************** [ Amira Leran - Town Square, Serenity] Even though she still bore some scars of her ordeal at the hands of Jaggah. The Betazoid scientist had recovered well and had soon gotten used to her prosthetic toes. Although the nightmares visited her on occasion, she was determined to enjoy this festival and hopefully speak to those who had helped her. As she walked through the square, Amira had spotted people that she had recognised, before Lars one of the farmers, caught her attention. Smiling warmly at her friend, Amira moved over to his stall and spoke to him, before her attention was cast towards a woman she didn't recognise. Picking up two cups of cider, Amira held one out to Syl and greeted her. " It's the best cider, this side of the quadrant and welcome to Serenity, I'm Amira".

[Town Square - Serenity] Thea appreciated Jovireh's honesty as the security officer responded to Isaiah's teasing with a grin and answered him. Understanding where she was coming from, in regards to the people as opposed to what was on offer. Grinning slightly as Isaiah then offered his opinion about the colonists and he wasn't wrong with his assessment. Although Thea was aware that not everyone would be so agreeing, but hopefully time would change that. " That they are and I'm sure this festival will only add to that" Thea added musingly, as Isaiah then mentioned their plans. The CO knew that he didn't intend for Jovireh to be a third wheel, before he amended his statement and looked over to Thea. She understood where he was going with this and thought it be a wonderful idea. " I think you will too and what better way to meet someone and have some fun".That's why they were here and if Jovireh liked their proposition then that would definitely be worth suggesting it.

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Town Square - Serenity] ' Myk-k,' Left Ear said again, still struggling with the last part. Grabfoots were just plain good eating, but after the tritter scare on the last mission, Left Ear wouldn't mind sinking her teeth into one of them as well. I've missed that.' It was a bit of a melancholy way to answer the question, she realized. ' I am having fun,' she added. Tag Myker Vulbrix [ Myker Vulbrix - Town Square - Serenity] Although the cadet still struggled with the last sound in his name, it was far better than struggling through the whole thing. It didn't bother the Betazoid at all either, since he'd grown used to people mispronouncing his name or struggling. His mother had taken him off world plenty of times so he'd grown accustomed to the variations his name had. Her response to his joke wasn't what he expected but then again it rarely was. He was just glad the Sivaoan seemed to recognize that he had indeed been joking. I don't think I'd like to know what it is. Myker rarely believed ignorance was bliss, but in this case he would rather remain ignorant of what exactly his crewmate was tearing into. He noted the droop of her tail, he didn't need his telepathy to sense the slight shift in mood. Her response was somewhat more somber than moments ago. He wanted to reach into her thoughts, wanted to find out what was the cause of the almost sadness that seemed to wash over her for a moment. He didn't though, knowing it was neither accepted nor the right thing to do. It seems the colony has come a long way since then.[/b] He'd only read about the last mission, he hadn't been there to witness it, but the nervousness of some of the crew was obvious and so he knew it must've caused significant damage, beyond the physical. He wondered how deep those scars ran. He shook his head briefly to clear his thoughts, right now it didn't seem important with how bright and cheery everyone seemed. The atmosphere is certainly contagious. He agreed, because even he himself had found it to be infectious. His posture was completely relaxed which was in stark contrast to his normal rigid stance. Have you spoken to the locals? He questioned, feeling more inclined to do that himself now that he'd finished observing them. Left Ear to-Ennien

[ LT Joshua Niles - Town Square, Serenity Colony ]When the colony leader came to join him on his side of the stand, Niles moved away as to not entirely block the front of the stall as to allow others to partake in those surprisingly good donuts. But then again, tasty fried dough was pretty much a staple of every single culture out there. And the sweetness of the pastry was in serious contrast to what had first brought them together, and the conversation they were having now. "I understand you were under duress, but I didn't know quite how much," he answered quietly. That much was true, but it still did not fully register with him. With Mac in orbit, filling the sky with runabouts and armed shuttles and beaming down a platoon of security to overwhelm those thugs could have been done within minutes of getting a distress call. "I think Sheriff Marais was also dying to tell me. Or he well might have tried to but I didn't pick up on it. For that matter, he's the one who made sure it wasn't a bloodbath when we were jumped."That moment, well, that was hardly a pleasant one; no one liked to lose, and everyone hated surrender. But the notion of leaving one's subordinates, or people who trusted in one, to suffer in order to get help defeat the overall threat? A Starfleet crew... And right there he stopped that train of thought. A Starfleet crew knew what they were getting into; civilians on starships all knew what they were getting into, or in the case of children their guardians had accepted the risk on their behalf. Those colonists had signed up for the hardship of founding a colony and accepted a degree of risks... but standing up to pirates with nothing but a limited stock of small arms? Not so much. And while a Starfleet officer could make the decision to directly endanger their crew if the situation warranted it, Mara Rexan had no such leeway. Nor, it seemed, the inclination. "You're right, that I probably misjudged everything here. You did what you thought was best for your people, I can respect that. And I'm guilty of, well, having expected a Starfleet-type response from you, and that your people had the same kind of risk acceptance we do. But even knowing that up here," he tapped the side of his head before continuing, "Doesn't mean it sits well with me."
