[ Capt. Oberon Vega (bio), Rol the Ferengi pilot | Landing Zone, B-975 III ]"He talks too much," Rol grumbled as he finished tying off one of the last secures for the shuttle's covering. "He'll wake up every creature on this dirt-clod of a planet. Why doesn't he just shut his gob and spare my ears."He gave the cord a final yank. "There. Gabar! It's done!"Meanwhile, Captain Vega accepted S'Riia's evaluation of the pattern enhancers with a grunt. "Get them secured." It was then that Shavan Th'zhaar came through with their heading. "About time." Vega strode past to train his binoculars south-east. The purpling sky was beginning to lighten - they'd be driving towards the sun which was just beginning to breach the distant horizon. Vega could feel the cool air already beginning to warm. "Don't you lose that ion trail, Th'zhaar. Now load up!" Rol was climbing up into the lead rover, leaving O'Connell to drive the second one trailing. Vega joined Rol in the lead rover. "Keep an eye out for sandstorms," he said to the group at large. "We don't want to get caught off-guard." [Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - B-975 III - Landing Zone]Syl's attention was drawn away from the presumptuous Ferengi by the Captain telling Bremmer to help the pilot cover the shuttle. She had only taken a step when she heard her name, followed by an order to get the rovers started. That's right... She wasn't the pilot for this mission. At least it seemed like she was going to get to drive. "Aye sir." Leaving the remaining packs of science equipment on the ground - he hadn't paid her yet, after all - she deposited her own as well as the one she offered to carry for free into the back of the closest rover before going to the next one. It was pretty easy to get it up and running, and in a matter of moments she was moving back to the second one to get it started. Tag Kaya Som soft Felicity Ellis [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - B-975 III - Landing Zone]Without any specific orders of his own to follow, Cerjess kept his tricorder open to continuously scan for local life signs as he made his way to the front rover. With the limited range of the scanners, he felt it would be more conducive to remaining unseen if he could give them as much of a heads up as possible.

[Shavan Th’zhaar - Landing Site, B-975 III]
“Aye, sir,” Shavan replied quickly, keeping an eye on the ion trail’s signature. His expertise was in navigation; there was no way he was losing that trail.
It was a pity that someone might notice if they lost Vega.
A glance around confirmed that rest of the team had prepared the rovers and were also nearly ready to get underway. Since he would need to be in front to keep tracking the crashed ship, he deposited the rest of his equipment into the lead rover, then climbed in after Miren.

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Landing Site] Left Ear blinked rapidly as Ensign Waring went on after affirming that he wasn't injured from his fall. She wasn't entirely certain what he meant, other than seeming to be reassuring her, so she replied, ' Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.' Her head turned as Captain Vega issued some more orders. There hadn't been one specific to her, so the cadet headed vaguely toward the second rover, figuring most of the officers would want to be in the first one. Left Ear climbed up and toward the back, nearly falling as her long desert robe got caught under one foot. She recovered and hoped no one had noticed the clumsy moment. She wasn't used to wearing clothing that could get in her way. If one of the higher-ranked officers wanted her seat, she'd give it up, but Left Ear started wondering if she was also obligated to obey orders from the Ferengi team. Syl didn't seem to think so, but she was also an officer already. She wanted to ask one of her team, but realized that might be difficult now with how well Ferengi could hear. Their ears were even better than hers. Tag William Waring

Their ears were even better than hers. Tag William Waring The pilot grumbling about someone, either Captain Vega or Ensign Waring, talking too much, drew a growl from Bremmer. Seriously, they had just landed a shuttle in the middle of nowhere. If there was anyone within a few hundred kilometers, like nomads or campers or what have you, getting ready in the pre-dawn hours who'd just so happened to look up, they would have seen trace of their passage. She might not be a pilot herself or understand all the science behind it, but she knew what those things looked like! But at least, the job was done before long and she looked to the rovers. And, as luck would have it, she had stowed her gear in the second one. Not that she really cared. That is, beyond the fact she would be riding with Syl. Not that Vega looked liked the kind to be the least bit forgiving of any kind of familiarity between a commissioned officer and a non-com like herself. And besides, they had a job to do. With her usual athleticism, she pulled herself into the ground vehicle, selecting the passenger-side seat in the middle row. A few movements saw the mask portion of her headwrap drawn over her face, and topped it all with a pair of goggles; sunglasses were all well and good, but dust was a real pain on a good day. "Bremmer ready to roll, Ms. O'Connell," Eliska then reported with a touch on Syl's shoulder and an ever so brief squeeze. But, despite the fact she was reporting formally, there was a smile in her voice. He was more than ready to get going, and she just loved being dirtside. Even a mission this sensitive, with such narrow margins for error, that was her idea of a fun assignment, and it sounded like it.

[Officer Gabar - Landing Area, B-975 III]Gabar was left momentarily speechless by the human fee-male's greedy response. This had been unexpected; humanfolk, especially Starfleet humanfolk, did not have the lobes for business. Apparently this human did, yet she was a fee-male. "Disgusting..." He muttered. Then he started toward her as she wandered off. "Sand jewels!" Gabar called after her, then pulled out a shiny, sparkling tumbled rock from his pocket. "Left behind by the great oceans that once covered this now useless, dry rock. Beautiful crystals! Many colours! Ten percent of today's haul, for you, if you-"He was distracted by the Orion's report. It took a lot to distract Gabar from a sales pitch, but it became clear that the ion trail had been found. He tugged his own scanner from his utility belt again and rushed to confirm, fingers moving very quickly. When someone got too close, he pulled the instrument closer to his chest and covered the screen with his hand. Starfleet had a reputation for being nosy. They always wanted to share things. Rol's muttered report reached his ears, thanks to the Ferengi's superior hearing. "We will split up," he informed the pilot, beginning to move himself toward the second rover. "Keep your ears as sharp as your teeth." Forgetting the bags he'd dropped, Gabar hoisted himself into the rover. Inside, he stared at the others, sneer building on his face. "That's my seat, house pet," he said to the furry feline, before turning his attention to the demonstrative pair up front. "Enough touchy. Go!"In front of them, the first rover was already underway.

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - B-975 III Landing Zone (Rover-1)]Receiving orders to secure the pattern enhancers, S'Riia began to move to do just that. "Aye, Captain," she said as she moved to the rear of the rover and began to stow and secure the pattern enhancers. She wouldn't argue that it was among the most crucial pieces of equipment on this mission. With the heading given, it seemed that they actually had a direction to go in, and Vega wasn't wasting any time. He ordered everyone to load into the rovers. He stepped into the lead rover, which wasn't a surprise at all. S'Riia didn't leap right into a rover, pausing a bit to see how they filled out. When nearly everyone had gotten into a rover, S'Riia finally moved towards one. Would she have been more comfortable in Rover #2. Perhaps. Fewer officers and there was at least a familiar face in Eliska from her own department being there. And yet, that was the exact reason she knew she should probably board the lead Rover. Tactically, it made sense to have security on each rover and to watch over the Captain (not that Vega seemed the sort to require protection.) And if nothing else, it'd dilute the collection of testosterone in the rover. Climbing in, S'Riia stowed her phaser rifle and strapped in. With her goggles already over her eyes she took a deep breath and sighed... dreading the beads of sand that were undoubtedly about to settle into her fur.

Heading 142°, SSE Local time: 07:30a Sunrise: 06:45a Temperature: 27C/81F [ Capt. Oberon Vega (bio), Rol the Ferengi pilot | Rover 1 ]The rovers were nearly silent as they traversed the shallow rolling dunes of tan-gold sand. The loudest sound was the wind whipping at their canvas covers, their gear clanking in their stays, and any words exchanged. At first, it seemed the landscape on this nameless planet was empty and featureless with no signs of animation at all. But soon the sun rose over the horizon and the true life of the desert began to show itself. Thick-trunked cacti-like plants stuck out from the dunes like yellow-green spikes, casting dramatic shadows. A herd of shaggy, long-legged herbivores spied them from the top of a nearby dune and scuttled away. The sky remained clear. By now, they'd been traveling two hours in a single straight shot. Vega had been quiet, speaking up only to prompt Th'zhaar and Cerjess for ion trail status and life-signs respectively, as if they wouldn't have kept him informed without being badgered. Occasionally, he did turn back to check that Rover 2 was still there, if only because it carried vital equipment and the ranking Ferengi Gabar. Then, for no discernable reason, Rol the pilot threw the brake. Rover 1 slowed suddenly and coasted out to a stop in the sand, halfway down a dune. Occupants were jostled and Rover 2 narrowly missed them. Vega got to his feet. The hot morning sun strathing them all, he demanded an answer from the driver. "Why are we stopping?" Rol crossed his arms and put his feet up on the dash, mouth shut. For a moment, it looked like Vega might detonate. But instead of bothering any further with Rol dismounted the rover so he could be in full view of the entire party. He raised his hands in the air and let them fall. "Why are we stopped? What possible reason are we stopped?" he asked his crew. It had taken some negotiations, but the Ferengi scientists had given up all the data they'd gathered about the surface during their atmospheric surveys. There hadn't been much, of course, due to the atmospheric radiation disrupting any useful scans. The Ferengi had spent as much time on planet as the away team had: less than three hours. They were all in the same rover, as it were, driving blindly after an ion trail. If the Ferengi had stopped their progress over some internal pissing match or some slight, Vega would start twisting ears. [ Shavan Th’zhaar - Rover 1] At first, the ion trail had been clearly traceable in its direction, conjuring a mental picture of the crashing shuttle careening straight over the desert. Shavan stayed quiet during the ride except to give short status updates at Vega’s prompting. He kept his attention on the tricorder, as of yet unbothered by the heat. Until, ever so slightly, the trail began to falter. He began to notice the slightest irregularities in the output of the scans. Not as though the shuttle had changed course, but as if the trail itself was starting to fade. It shouldn’t be a problem, yet, but he looked up to report as much— when suddenly, they stopped short. His gaze followed the Ferengi pilot as, with little apparent prompting or explanation, he made a clear gesture of refusing to drive any further. Though Shavan quickly snapped his attention back to what he had been about to say when Vega turned the question on the rest of them. “I’m picking up slight irregularities in the strength of the ion trail and a drift by 2 degrees south. The readings are consistent with the beginnings of dispersion due to atmospheric interference or weather.” And then, reconfirming their course, quickly added, "Compensating for the drift now."

Isaiah Quinn , Felicity Ellis , Syl O'Connell , Eliska Bremmer , William Waring , Left Ear to-Ennien , Shavan Th'zhaar , "Co curva[fn]Czech expletive[/fn] Ferengi," Bremmer found herself muttering when the alien boarded their rover, and not only snarled at Syl, who just so happened to be the senior officer aboard, but also insulted the Cadet. Left Ear To-Ennien was perhaps not commissioned as an officer, but she was employed as one, which meant she was damn well entitled to the respect granted to one! "The Lieutenant and the Doc are officers, Ferengi," she reminded him, before they finally got rolling. Perhaps modern technology meant the rovers themselves were quiet, but the combination of the sand under the tires and the wind howling through the open framing was the sort of thing to preclude conversation. That, and even with her mask portion of her head wrap drawn up on, Eliska could feel some grit getting to her face, and chewing on grit was the last thing she felt like doing; especially knowing that in certain deserts, the dust could have a fecal matter content of thirty percent or more. And there certainly was a danger to the sameness of sand and dunes, even as the sun was rising and revealing more of the terrain and what life there was. Boredom and complacency were the enemies of good security, and Bremmer forced herself to keep her eyes moving, to notice everything bloody thing she could. After all, she was the one supposed to keep the crew of the rover safe if anything was to happen and... Violently their ride slewed over, slipping in the sand and next thing she knew they had just passed the suddenly stopped Rover 1 before coming to a halt themselves. "What the hell?" she snarled under her mask, her left hand shooting up to brace herself while her right instinctively went to her rifle to ensure it was still in its bracket. In fact, she pulled her weapon from its mount and proceeded to climb higher on the rover and sat on one of the cross-members, her rifle in her lap and scanning the horizon through a compact monocular scope. However, she did spot the driver of the other rover, seemingly taking a break. What the hell was going on there? And Captain Vega did not seem pleased about this particular development. Now, if that Ferengi was about to start asking for money to keep going, Bremmer certainly would not be one to mind if she was asked to explain the facts of life to him...

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - B-975 III - Landing Zone]The look of shock on the Ferengi's face when she had demanded payment to carry his packs was enough to make the rest of his snarling as everyone loaded up more bearable. Though it seemed her other passengers didn't have it so easy. Thankfully he stopped grouching as they got underway, following behind the other rover and staying just far enough behind to avoid any collisions if there was an unexpected delay. A decision she was grateful for as the distance between them suddenly closed rapidly. Cursing under her breath, the rover swerved as she braked and turned, sliding on the sand with the sudden change of direction. When they finally came to a halt, she glanced over as well, staring at the other pilot that appeared to have decided to take a nap. Was that really necessary? She remained in her seat, waiting for orders or information from Vega as he seemed to be equally confused as the rest of them about the sudden stop. [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - B-975 III - Landing Zone]At the unexpected change in moment, Cerjess threw his hand forward to brace against the seat in front of him, his tricorder toppling to the floorboard. Once they came to a complete stop, and were not rear-ended by the second rover, the Trill quickly bent down to retrieve the fallen device. Nothing had registered so far except the occasional wildlife... Had the driver seen something the sensors didn't pick up? Running another quick scan of the area, he craned his head to look at the space in front of them, then back at the tricorder. "I'm picking up a rather large swarm of insects heading straight for us..." Squinting behind his protective eyewear, he looked at the sky ahead once more. According to the scan, the swarm was almost on top of them, but all he could see was the occasional flash of light, almost like sun glinting off shards of glass floating through the air. "I suggest everyone take cover..." His warning was directed mostly at the Captain, whom had departed the rover to yell some more. Tag Kaya Som

[Officer Gabar - Rover 2, B-975 III]The house pet snarled at him, baring teeth in a very threatening manner. Gabar let out a little screechy noise and clambered backward, staring in alarm at Left Ear. "Sssavage!"He promptly took a different seat. He was going to tell Captain Vega that his pet had tried to eat him. "I am not edible!" He told her in slight panic as he strapped himself in. "They are softer!" He pointed toward the human females, who were really more useful for meal preparation, and if required to save them, as meals themselves. Every now and then he'd risk a sidelong glance at the large cat-like creature, suspicion narrowing his gaze. Once it became clear that she wasn't going to try and nibble on the meats of his cheeks, he became occupied with his work. He tapped away on a small device, seemingly making reports and studying scans. The thing beeped and pinged with regularity, as though it was receiving messages. When the rover came to a sudden stop, Gabar was just as unmoved as Rol had been in the leading craft. "Little wings. Flpf flpf flpf." His sound effects caused bits of spittle to fly from his mouth. "Millions of them."

[Ens. Will Waring - Rover 2]The landscape was just sand, sand, and more sand. If you wanted a change of scenery just look in a different direction and oh wait, more sand. To say he wasn't fond of the granular menace was an understatement only further reinforced by his constant finding of it throughout his uniform. He was convinced he had more sand in his uniform then could possibly be achieved with just his stumble. If it were up to him he'd use the sand to blow glass in the form of a middle finger that he would then use to flip off the sand. Many more sand rants laterAs the rover slid to a stopped position he was stirred from his sandy thoughts and reminded that they were on a mission and that the sand can be punished later. As he looked at the sudden stoppage he heard Gabar mention something about millions of something. He looked around at the others in his rover "Should we take cover or something..." he asked, slightly panicked at the thought of millions of things coming their way which wasn't helped by Lieutenant's report on them being insects "I don't suppose we have a bunker nearby do we?" he probed further into the hell they were likely to experience. This is the reason he liked space over a planet. In space you don't have millions of insects, heat, and SAND. "Can't we make them turn around? Loud noises? Weapons fire? Bug spray? Maybe a 'No Soliciting' sign? I mean we transport people as energy so surely we can repel some bugs with something, right? Right?"

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Rover 2] Left Ear lifted her eyes to the sky in exasperation as the Ferengi grossly overreacted to her. ' I'm not an animal,' she muttered as she flipped her hood back over her head, knowing that Gabar would hear her. She spent the next two hours slumped in her seat, the very tip of her tail trailing out the side of the rover. The hood shaded her eyes adequately from the sun, but she closed her nictitating eyelids to protect them from the sand. It meant she was looking through a slight haze, but her skills wouldn't be needed unless someone got hurt. Ordinarily, she might have shown some interest in cataloging the local wildlife, but focusing on her actual job was about all she could concentrate on. The rover ahead stopped abruptly, and theirs was thrown into a skid to avoid hitting it. Left Ear reached out to brace herself, tail wrapping around a rail. When Cerjess and then Gabar confirmed that a swarm of insects was headed their way, Left Ear dropped her hood again and cupped her ears forward to try to hear what they had. It took a moment, but then she faintly caught exactly what the Ferengi had described. She shivered. ' Pretty sure we don't have a bunker,' she said dryly in response to the hapless ensign. ' We might have to hunker down in the sand and cover ourselves with our robes and anything else we can.' But she didn't know for sure. Had they brought some kind of shelter that could be erected quickly? Tag Felicity Ellis (Gabar), William Waring and softs to the rest of Rover 2
