[ Stardate 2381.11.09 | Orbit around B-975 III ][ Mission Log - Captain Oberon Vega ]The USS Mac is in orbit around the third planet of the star system B-975 (Federation Designation). We are here to assist Ferengi Alliance science ship Gall-Laj in recovering their crash-landed light shuttle from the third planet in the system, where the Ferengi had been studying the outer levels of the atmosphere. Our mission is complicated by several factors. The first is B-975 III's unique atmosphere, the upper portion of which is irradiated in such as way as to terminally disrupt electromagnetic waves. The Ferengi also inform us that similar limitations to our communications and scanning technology will hamper our work on the surface as well. The exact location of the crashed shuttle is unknown, but the Gall-Laj has their last-known coordinates which should place us within a three-days' journey to the crash site. Probes or any other sub-atmospheric aerial survey have not been authorized by the Federation due to the second primary complication: B-975 III is inhabited by a pre-warp sentient people and the Prime Directive is well in affect. The Ferengi have somehow managed to avoid contact in this remote region, and we will take every precaution to keep it that way. When the away team and the Ferengi crew arrive on the surface, we will be able to hone in on the location of the crashed ship by tracking a signature ion trail. We will have at their disposal two light ground transports. We will travel during the day and make camp at night. When we find the crashed ship, we will assist the Ferengi in recovering their people. Starfleet point-to-point transporter pattern enhancers will provide the signal stability needed for all personnel and equipment to return to the ship. [ Science & Engineering Report ]Approximately 3 million years ago, the star at the center of the B-975 system experienced a massive flare which irradiated the outer atmosphere of the third planet. Irradiated particles in the atmosphere disrupt patterns embedded in electromagnetic radiation, scrambling and making this method of data transmission impossible. The Away Team should note that the following capabilities will not be available from the ships in orbit: communication to the surface; transporters; scientific scans of the surface from orbit. According to the Ferengi data, this phenomenon persists on the surface to a lesser degree. Electromagnetic waves remain clear across short distances, but quality begins to sharply fall off at about the distance to a flat horizon. The Away Team should note that the following capabilities will not be available on the surface: communication to ships in orbit; long-range surface communications; long-range surface scans. The Away Team has been equipped with vehicles, clothing, and survival equipment suited to an arid, sand-desert environment. Based on data gathered by the Ferengi about B-975's atmosphere, transporters will safely function if a transporter pattern enhancer array is erected on the surface. [ Command Report ]The Ferengi Alliance have shared all data gathered to date concerning B-975 III. They have provided a shuttle capable of navigating the atmosphere, and a pilot. The shuttle and Ferengi side of the mission will be overseen by Ferengi ranking officer Gabar. Starfleeet Command has sent Captain Oberon Vega to command the away team. Starfleet will provide an Away Team escort, and transporter pattern enhancer array, and act as representative of Federation interests in the system. [ Prime Directive Orders - Starfleet Command ]The USS Mac, in the course of its mission to assist in the rescue and recovery of the Ferengi ship Gall-laj crew and shuttle, is hereby directed to avoid contact with the sentient population of B-975 III in adherence to the Prime Directive. The B-975 system is located outside of Federation space and is protected by several inter-galactic treaties. Among other things, the treaty details strict rules concerning warp activity in the system and contact with the local people. The Ferengi Alliance is party to this alliance and the Federation has been designated steward. The Ferengi requested assistance insomuch as to make use of Federation transporter technology in their rescue operation. While in orbit, in transition, and on the surface, the USS Mac and Ferengi ship Gall-laj will conceal their presence from the local population, remove any trace of movements on the surface, and recover any material objects that may be on the surface. Furthermore, no attempt shall be made to contact the local population or interact with them in any way. We begin with the Away Team and Ferengi partners safely on the planet, preparing to get underway. Gear must be transferred from the Ferengi shuttle to the rovers, the shuttle must be concealed, and the ion trail that will guide them towards the crashed ship detected.
There's no time to stand around. The less time on the planet the better.
It's 5 in the morning, local time and the vast sandy desert is still cold awaiting the sunrise. [ Capt. Oberon Vega (bio) | Landing, B-975 III ]Captain Oberon Vega, a human of some height and enough years, was the first out of the Ferengi shuttle's bay doors. He strode out, totally sure-footed, into the sand as if B-975 III was his own chunk of earth. He'd spent the journey down from orbit standing directly behind the Ferengi pilot (called Rol), watching everything he did. Only when he wanted to bark some reminder at one of the Mac's crew did Vega take his eyes off the pilot's maneuvers and readings. "Th'zhaar, move faster," he barked at the Andorian/Orion science officer, who may or may not have been moving at an acceptable pace to Vega's liking. Vega had raised binoculars and was taking a slow, steady turn around the cool blue horizon. Dawn was coming from the east. Otherwise, the landscape was featureless. No hint of the crashed Ferengi vessel or its trail was visible. Just sandy desert in every direction, peppered with sparse vegetation. "And someone make sure the cadet remembers its gear." [Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Landing - B-975 III]
Left Ear's tail dragged in the sand as she exited the shuttle and stepped to the side to check her equipment, just as the commanding officer's words reached her. The Sivaoan's ears laid back briefly, but she made no further response, simply double-checking that her tricorder and personal medkit were firmly attached to her harness, along with the rest of her gear. As the team's medical officer, she also carried a large medkit slung crossbody. She was as prepared as she could be for most eventualities - the kit contained a few extras for treating desert-specific injuries and illnesses like heat stroke and dehydration.
Once she was sure she was ready, Left Ear stood quietly staring at the ground, ears at half-mast under her long desert robe. This was wildly out of character for the normally gregarious cadet. She was usually friendly and talkative, curious and active, but today all she could manage was being present and ready to perform her duties. She also typically hated having anything over her ears, but today it gave her a place to hide.
She'd spent the last couple of months dealing with the emotional impact of having killed another intelligent being, even though it had been in defense of others. She'd been seeing a counselor and her father and one of her sisters had shown up to surprise her. At first Left Ear hadn't wanted to see them, but being around family had actually helped some. Eventually, Left Ear thought she might start feeling normal, but she couldn't even work up annoyance at the sand that was going to be hell to get out of her fur later.

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Landing, B-975 III ]
Planetary expedition. That was much more like it so far as Bremmer was concerned! Solid ground, open sky, real gravity. No time-bending spatial sphincters, no dependency on power systems that could turn a ship Normally, crossing over to another ship to board their own small craft was a fairly minor matter. But when dealing with Ferengi, that could always get interesting in a number of ways. The odious little toads had come at her in a number of way, from trying to buy her charms for a duration, to trying to bill her personally for the shuttle passage to the surface, with a surcharge for her oversized pack and her rifle...
It wasn't even a good try!
Though, she did find herself realizing that the mission commander was nothing like the command team she was used to. Captain Vega was brusque, barked quite a bit, and she had the very strong impression that suggesting anything wasn't going to work well, that he was one of those who did not recognize any idea not his own to be flawed by default... But, this was the job. Upon hitting the ground, he did not even wait for his security detail, namely Bremmer herself, to get out first and he even started barking orders. First at Mister Th'zhaar, and then at Cadet to-Ennien. Now, Eliska had not been down on Serenity (and how she wished she could've been there!), but everyone knew that she taken a Klingon 3 times her size completely unarmed, and put him down for good. That put her in the Petty Officer's good books all right and hardly deserving of that kind of treatment. So, as she exited the shuttle, her pack slung over one shoulder and her rifle in the other hand, she used her free hand to pat the Cadet on the shoulder on her way past. "The Sir doesn't know you, Doc. We do," she quietly said as she made her way towards the rovers. At least, they weren't walking through the desert, so there was at least that.

[Felicity Ellis - Bridge, USS Mac]No communications, no reports, no chatter... nothing. Normally the XO got to lead the Away Missions. It had absolutely been Felicity's most favourite part about being demoted. She had always taken her duties as Captain very seriously, but it was true that they missed out on a lot of action. She'd been told by her "elders" that she'd get used to it, that she was immature to the role. She never did get used to it. Though perhaps she'd always been immature to the role. She placed another PADD on the stack. Her hands hovered to the side of her unsteady creation, breath held as she waited. It stilled. "Yesss... Thirty-two."Ensign Nork, whose PADD was currently on the top of this precarious pile, looked unimpressed. "That contained my report.""And now your report contributes to the greatness of my art."This was going to be a very long few days. [Officer Gabar - Landing Area, B-975 III]Orders from his DaiMon on the Gall-Laj had been very clear. Gabar, officer in charge of the sciencing here, knew he was technically the most important individual on this planet. This dry, arid, disgusting planet... "Science, coming through," he declared, brushing past a sorry looking creature in a hood. His bags containing his equipment and effects slid from his shoulders, and he dropped them at the feet of a Starfleet human female that he had heard others refer to as a 'lieutenant'. "You will carry these." He needed to be free and without burden in order to work. He turned toward the Captain. "We must begin the scans immediately." Time was latinum, after all. Gabar fished his eyewear from a pocket within his loose robes. Being that Ferengi had such magnificent, iconic lobes, his glasses were specially made to ensure maximum comfort and protection, but also did not detract from the impressive ears.

[Shavan Th’zhaar - Landing Area, B-975 III]
After checking his equipment and shouldering a pack, Shavan stepped off the shuttle into the pleasantly cool air… just in time to hear Captain Vega snap back at him. Fantastic. He knew how to deal with harsh commanders, though this was the first human with such a temperament that he’d gotten stuck with.
The appeal of the Ferengi as traveling companions was also dubious in this case, but they at least tended to be predictable, and therefore easy to manipulate. Though Gabar, too, brushed past them all and repeated the need for urgency. As if they were, what, about to lie down in the sand and do nothing? Of course, neither the Captain nor the Ferengi were worth a response.
Biting his tongue against the reply he would’ve liked to give, Shavan maintained a carefully neutral expression while taking out a tricorder to begin working. “Scanning for the ion trail now.”

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - B-975 III - Landing Zone]Being in a shuttle and not being the one flying it had been strange for the pilot. Part of her wondered why she'd even been selected for this mission. But considering the environment of the planet, her extensive survival training could come in handy. Not to mention having an extra pilot was beneficial if a swift getaway was needed. Hopefully she wouldn't actually be needed for either of those. Following the others into the hot open air, the blinding sun immediately reminded her of The Pit. At least this time, they had Starfleet protective gear, and she smiled slightly to herself as she fitted the eyewear in place to block out the worst of the rays. Yes, this was definitely better than Caldonia. The Captain that had been assigned to them was barking orders all over the place, but Syl was rather used to that. Vega sounded a lot like her father. It was the Ferengi scientist that caught her attention by dropping all of his numerous packs in front of her and informing her that she would be carrying them. With her own pack of survival gear already slung over her shoulder, she gave him an incredulous look before she picked up the smallest of his packs and slung it over her other shoulder. "I'll carry this one out of the goodness of my heart. Any others, you'll have to pay me for. One slip per pack." Syl couldn't care less about the latinum, but she refused to bossed around and walked all over by someone who wasn't her superior officer. Ferengi only spoke one language; she had no problems with using that language to stand up for herself. Tag Felicity Ellis (Gabar) [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - B-975 III - Landing Zone]The Trill was excited to be on a mission that somewhat fell within his specialty. Sure, they weren't there to study the planet, but at least they were on a planet. That was better than the last mission he'd been on. Nothing made Cerjess feel more helpless than spatial anomalies. Apparently, 57 years in one hadn't changed that. He hadn't run into his older counterpart since the Mac returned to the station, for which he was grateful. Just knowing he existed was difficult enough. The sudden blinding light of the sun jarred him from his thoughts, and Cerjess fumbled with his protective eyewear. Thankfully it only took a moment for him to get situated, and he was pulling out his own tricorder. Since Lt. Th'zhaar was scanning for the ion trail they were to follow, there wasn't much for him to look for, except "No other lifesigns within tricorder range." At least they weren't in immediate danger of violating the Prime Directive on a massive scale. Tag Kaya Som Felicity Ellis Shavan Th'zhaar Eliska Bremmer Isaiah Quinn

"A planetary mission, of all things" he thought to himself as he checked his kit "What good is am I on a planet! I wasn't even born on a planet!" he continued before realizing he was too busy wondering and not actually getting his gear together. As the only Operations Management Officer (the full title of Ops that he insisted upon using) assigned to the away team it was his responsibility to carry things like toolkits, spare equipment, and diagnostic tools for usage in the recovery of the shuttle. Of course he felt like more pack mule then officer right now but he'd be important, they'd see!
Satisfied that his gear matched the list he prepped before departure he made his way out of the shuttle and... promptly tripped and fell face first into the desert. Picking himself up and brushing the sand off his uniform (and being thoroughly displeased with the sand that found its way into the uniform) he made his way to the rest of the group who he hoped hadn't seen his graceful exit "That natural gravity...heh" he joked sheepishly as he wished he could just stay in the shuttle and hide.

[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac ] A smile managed to slide its way onto Isaiah's face as he overheard Commander Ellis' exchange with Ensign Nork. Of course, it was a testament to what awaited them all aboard the ship: waiting. Presently, they weren't able to make contact with the away team, which was actually working on the planet with the Ferengi to help them locate their missing vessel. In a number of ways, Isaiah very easily could have been down on the planet as well, but for several reasons... he wasn't. In his opinion, the scientist assigned to the away team were easily capable of providing the scientific support that would be required. Cerjess' expertise was in planetary science and Shavan would make certain that they wouldn't get lost. There wasn't much more that Isaiah felt he could offer to the away team that the rest of his fellow scientists could. Of course, that left him with the opportunity to focus on a different mystery altogether. Isaiah knew that there were restrictions and that it was important to do nothing that could place the Prime Directive in jeopardy, but he was thoroughly intrigued by the planet's phenomenon. Which meant he was planning on spending the next few days running plenty of inconclusive scans and running a few tests in hopes of finding a potential means to cut through all that interference. His last communication with the Ferengi ship had been in hopes of collaborating and getting a look at the data they had accumulated thus far. Of course, it had been made clear to Isaiah that he would have to pay for that information as it wasn't covered explicitly in their current arrangement with the Ferengi. "I'll have number thirty-three ready for you shortly," Isaiah said with a smile as he looked over the reports that he had received and begun to consolidate.
[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - B-975 III Landing Zone] S'Riia would have preferred different surroundings, but in her opinion, the job was the job. She just knew that when this mission was over, she would be treating herself to the spa treatment. How sand had never been classified as a living being was unknown, since it seemed to be able to travel practically everywhere. In her opinion, even some places that water itself couldn't reach. S'Riia secured her gear, checked her rifle and side-arm were fully charged, and slid the goggles over her eyes. It wasn't nearly as bright as it would likely get, but S'Riia could see just fine as she stepped onto the planet's surface. She instantly felt herself sink into the sand and sighed. Her eyes scanned first the rest of the team and then the perimeter. Everything seemed clear for the time being. That was a good sign. Hopefully it'd remain as such. She proceeded to load some of the gear onto the rovers. The most evident addition to this team was that of Captain Vega. He had found a way to make himself stand out, and more importantly set himself apart from their other commanders. He was an alpha, plain and simple. He wasn't leaving that open for interpretation in the least. When he gave an order, he expected it to be followed to the letter. At least that was the impression that S'Riia got. Definitely a different command style than either Captain Eastman or Baker, as well as Commanders Ellis and Quinn. Of course, while the rest of the crew was getting used to that, it was possible that Vega's style of command was what this mission warranted, especially since they were working with the Ferengi. S'Riia's ears twitched as she took in all the exchanges. How, Vega had harped on both Th'zhaar and the cadet. The Ferengi's failed attempt to make a servant of Lt. O'Connell because she was a woman. The scientist were hard at work, confirming that there were no life signs in the area and already searching for an ion trail. The half-Caitian continued to load supplies. Bremmer had offered comforting words to the cadet... not coddling. And then there was Waring. Yes, she'd seen that exit. "Yeah... really brings you down, huh, sir?" Maybe he'd be able to wait on the shuttle... though S'Riia doubted it.

[ Capt. Oberon Vega (bio), Ferengi pilot Rol | Landing, B-975 III ]Rol, a relatively rangy Ferengi of few words, was the last to exit the shuttle. Once the two dune rovers were off-loaded, he began making quick work of darkening the shuttle's systems and securing all hatches. They'd cover it over with a sandy-colored canvas to conceal and protect it until it could be discreetly returned. Meanwhile, Captain Vega was circling the two rovers tightening straps and double-checking cables, not leaving it to chance or their vestigial Ops officer who was conducting an oral geological survey. The two rovers were open to the air with the capability to support awnings for shelter once the sun came up. Each rover could each seat six which was enough room for the away team and equipment. "Where's my ion trail, Th'zhaar?" he called out with an edge of impatience. "Bremmer, help the pilot cover the shuttle. O'Connell, get these rovers running. S'Riia, I want the transporter pattern enhancers re-checked - last I saw, Waring had his hands on them." The array of transporter pattern enahncers was the whole bloody point. If they arrived at the crashed shuttle and they couldn't establish a signal, the rescue team would need rescued themselves. "Underway in five!" [Ens. Will Waring - Landing Site]”It’s different then what I’m used to. That and I tripped over my own boots.” he admitted S’Riia “I wish it was something less… sandy, ya know? I’m going to start an anti-sand club, mark my words” he chuckled though it wasn’t really a joke. “Oh, the pattern enhancers. Uh…” he paused as he fumbled around his back and felt the first enhancer detach “Ah, here we are! Enhancers are here, sir!” he said to Vega triumphantly as he presented it to S’Riia. Another few moments and he had two more enhancers in his hands ready to be inspected. He didn’t know why he was selected for this mission but he honestly he wouldn’t be surprised if Vega was doing it just for shit and giggles. Between him and the Ferengi he didn’t know who’d be the topic of conversation at his next therapy session…

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Landing Site] Left Ear paid little attention as the others exited the shuttle and got their gear together. Even Eliska's words barely registered, earning only the flick of one of her hooded ears. It had taken the cadet a moment to even recognize that the security officer was speaking to her. Left Ear had heard others call doctors 'Doc', but wasn't used to hearing it applied to her. In the infirmary, she was called Doctor or Healer, and it was 'Cadet' or her name the rest of the time. Eliska was an unusual Human as far as Left Ear could tell, though she didn't know the woman well. And then the operations ensign faceplanted in the sand. Left Ear's tail twitched slightly, barely moving the hem of her desert garb. The accident did shake her out of her funk slightly. The cadet took a couple of steps to the ensign's side, her toes splaying in the sand, claws digging in to help her keep her balance. ' Are you hurt?' she asked quietly, glancing at the half-Caitian security officer from under her deep hood. Tag William Waring and Isaiah Quinn

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Landing, B-975 III ]Bremmer did not wait for an acknowledgement from the Cadet. And honestly, she didn't need one. Even as a mere Cadet, technically the Sivaoan outranked her, given she was employed as an officer. But, she had been taught from early on that it was an NCO's job to look after junior officers. And even as a very junior Petty Officer, it was Eliska's role to set a baby officer on the right track. Now and again it could mean just as little as reassuring them they were doing the right thing, such as this case, or sometimes they would need a firmer hand. As Will Waring just demonstrated by faceplanting with his first step off the shuttle. Just bloody lovely. Seriously, how had he drawn this detail of all people? He was a hot mess when things were decidedly low-intensity, but under a scorching sun, on a planet inhabited by a pre-warp civilization, on a mission with very little room for error? This couldn't be good all right. And Syl... it was good to see her out there, and confident enough to tell off that Ferengi who expected to use her as a pack mule. But given that Vega looked about as flexible as a length of rebar, it meant she would have to be on her best behaviour with the pilot; any hint of familiarity could end really badly for her... And then, the order to help camouflage the shuttle. Well, she could do that all right. "Aye Sir, on it." Well, she was not on it instantly, taking just long enough to stow her pack on one of the rovers before making for the tarp. Now, that was something for which materials science could only do so much. Of course extreme lightweight materials could be produced, but if a camouflage cover was blown away by the wind, it would be only so much use. But with only five minutes to work, with a Ferengi no less, that would be problematic to get the job done in time. Which meant that she didn't even ask the little troll for help and instead proceeded to drag the net to the bow of the shuttle, and then start dragging it over it. At least, in this particular gravity, her strength was making short work of the task, with the net being more cumbersome than heavy. "Hey, how about you stake that net down behind me so it doesn't take off with the first stiff wind," she called out to the Ferengi pilot.

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Landing Site, B-975 III] Despite the distance and time since the crash, the ion trail was distinctive to the trained eye. And with the addition of the data the Ferengi had provided about the crashed ship, Shavan already knew exactly what to look for. The scan quickly picked up trace readings consistent with a Ferengi ship’s emissions. As predicted, the scan was unable to reach far before becoming disrupted by the atmosphere’s interference, but its path was traceable. His antennae twitched just slightly at the sound of his name from Vega, again, but he kept his eyes on the tricorder as he calculated the ion trail’s trajectory and the heading and course they would need to follow. “Ion trail detected, bearing 142 degrees from our current coordinates,” he answered as soon as he had it, walking quickly toward the rover to be ready to navigate. [Ens. Will Waring - Landing Site]Will looked up from the pattern enhancer that he was hold to look at Left Ear as she inquired into his well-being "Oh, no. Just a little embarrassed, that's all. I don't suppose it is a common sight to see an Officer tumble out a doorway though. I appreciate the ask nevertheless." he said, smiling at Left Ear and giving her a pat on the shoulder "And if I may offer some advice... don't take the Captain's statements personally. When I was assigned to Starbase 74 I worked under a Lieutenant Commander who didn't need a reason to rip someone apart. I could strip down a transporter pad and reassemble it faster and better than he could so you know what he'd do? He'd point out that I scuffed the deck plating or a had my tools laying about. Captain Vega strikes me as that kind of person would bring up the scuff." Will set the pattern enhancers dow and fully turned to face Left Ear "Superior Officers are a mixed bag and sometimes you get some that are just abrasive. I used to hinge my entire day on what they thought of me. SB-74 fixed that particular problem, heh. Besides, I quite like having a doctor on hand. As is learned from some of the rougher Academy Training Exercises, you can never have a medic too close!"

Between him and the Ferengi he didn’t know who’d be the topic of conversation at his next therapy session… [ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Landing Site] Left Ear paid little attention as the others exited the shuttle and got their gear together. As is learned from some of the rougher Academy Training Exercises, you can never have a medic too close!" [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - B-975 III Landing Zone] S'Riia wasn't entirely certain what to make of the Ensign's rambling about gravity being tricky. She was aware that some people adjusted differently to natural gravity's, but knew that it wasn't her place to make much of an issue of it. "Yes, sir," she replied simply. "It can be tricky." She couldn't recall having many issues with gravity herself, though she had spent plenty of time on planets, even growing up mostly on Earth. It was Zero-G that took getting used to for her. Idle chatter seemed to have no place as Captain Vega began doling out orders once more. Hearing her name and her assignment of re-checking the pattern enhancers refocused the Caitian's attention. "Right away, sir," she responded. Her eyes darted back to Ensign Waring who began to fish out the pattern enhancers. Upon taking hold of the first one, S'Riia proceeded to check the enhancer, making certain that it would activate and that it was still calibrated to the specifications from the briefing. Everything seemed to be in working order and no damage. Around that time, Cadet Leftear came over to check on Ensign Waring, having overheard him saying that he'd tripped before. S'Riia nodded at the Cadet and proceeded to check the rest of the enhancers. In some ways, S'Riia could certainly relate to the Sivaoan, or so she believed, especially in this climate. Yet, that was beside the point. S'Riia could overhear the ensign speak about gravity... a former assignment... and then CO's... though he seemed to be speaking in generalties. "Enhancers are in working order, Captain," S'Riia announced and proceeded to prepare the enhancers for storage so that they could begin to get underway. Which sounded like it could be sooner rather than later. Captain Vega was ready to roll in five minutes and Lieutenant Th'zhaar seemed to have locked on to the ion trail for them to follow.
