[Ready Room - USS Mac, Beta Irani System] [Approx 4 weeks since Road To The End] [Stardate 2381.12.01 - Captain's Personal Log] " Since arriving a couple of days ago, all I can say is that it's good to be back out here. I've enjoyed my time watching over Front Ear and never really realised how much I'd missed being out in space until now. Maybe it's the mission and getting to witness the truly wonderful yet thought provoking spectacle of a supernova and the death of a planet.
It certainly puts things into perspective and I hope that the crew get something positive out of it too. With that being said, viewing galleries were set up in both the Observation Lounge and the Scapegoat for those off shift or between shifts so that noone misses out. That's what's important as we never know when we'll get this opportunity again and I'm sure Science will also be very happy with all of the data that they've compiled with more to come.
I'll be going back out to the Bridge shortly as the next stage should be happening soon and Irani Prime deserves as much respect as it's Sun. We've been fortunate that the Aadoan who once called Irani Prime home until they were relocated, have kept extensive records so it won't be forgotten completely. Having read some of them prior to arriving, it was fascinating and in some ways sad too, with what's about to occur".Thea paused and thought over what she had said, contemplating whether to add more but ultimately decided to pause it for now. There would be time to continue later if needed and of course do the official log too. " Computer save at current time" she instructed, before receiving confirmation. Satisifed with that, Thea then got up from her desk, pulling her tunic down before exiting the ready room. ********** [Bridge - USS Mac] Returning to the Bridge as opposed to remaining in the Ready Room had definitely been the right idea as Thea emerged and stood taking it all in. " How long do we have before it starts to consume Irani Prime?".
1. The Aadoan are a warp capable race who are in the process of joining the Federation. 2. Prior to relocation, they lived underneath the surface of Irani Prime or Freedom as they called it (roughly what it translates too). Their city and surrounding residential areas were modest but spectacular in design and concept. No one knows exactly when they moved underground but to them it's always been that way. 3. Irani Prime is also a typical M class planet, with a slightly higher concentration of Nitrogen in the atmosphere.

[Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - USS Mac - Bridge]
Left Ear was off duty. She didn't expect to be needed much in a medical capacity for this trip, so she was on the overnight shift just for the experience.
Now, however, the cadet was visiting each station on the bridge in turn and watching the officers go about their work. She had jokingly looped her tail around her wrists when first entering the command center to show that she wouldn't interfere with anything, and Left Ear was careful to stay out of the way and not hover too close as she observed the workings at the various stations. It wasn't likely she'd ever have to man one of these stations, but the Sivaoan was curious and wanted to know how everything worked.
When Thea returned to the bridge, Left Ear glanced over and dipped her head in greeting from where she'd been peering at the helm.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - USS Mac - Bridge]Everything had been quiet since they entered the system, though the growing feeling of excitement was tangible among the crew. The pilot was definitely looking forward to getting a front-row view of the spectacular event. At least... she would until the time came to get the hell out of dodge. Catching movement from the corner of her eye, she glanced over to see Left Ear moving between the stations curiously. "Take a seat, Cadet," she commented in a friendly tone, gesturing to the chair at the secondary console next to her. "Want to try your paw at Navigation?" It hadn't been that long since she'd gone through the Academy herself, and Syl remembered well that they encouraged learning beyond a chosen specialty. Now seemed as good a time as any, since they really weren't doing anything yet but waiting. And navigation wasn't the sort of thing that someone could cause a problem with when they weren't actually going anywhere. Her eyes shifted as Captain Baker chose that moment to return to the Bridge. "If the Captain doesn't mind, of course..." While she had plenty experience with Thea as a doctor, Syl knew far less about the woman's command style. She wasn't interested in crossing a line with her so soon into the mission.

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Bridge, USS Mac ][/font] Well, all eventually came to an end. And for Eliska Bremmer, that was the period when she could happily just be just a mere guard who could stay the hell away from the terrifying nightmare that was the tactical console. She'd manned it before, and had barely been able to read the information in front of her, but now she was actually expected to tick that box on her proficiency records. Joy. Unbridled, unadulterated, joy. Not. But at least, this was supposed to be a routine enough survey mission, or so she was given to understand. Watching a star die. That, she had to look up as well. A star on the brink of going supernova, that was something else all right. Putting out enough energy to vaporize or knock out of orbit everything in the system, and a burst of radiation that could wipe out life in every system within a handful of lightyears, and cause serious ecological damage up to a hundred away, depending on the start blowing up. Now, those were concepts and numbers she couldn't quite wrap her head around, but the gist of it was clear enough: it'll be a hell of a show when it went off, and they would be treated to a truly but blissfully brief unpleasant time should the warp drive experience difficulties. When the Captain asked about how long they had before the detonation, Bremmer considered her question and brought up the readings... which meant very little to her, but at least she was able to do so without fumbling, so that was a start. "I'm, ah, not sure Captain. But I'm seeing increased... neutrino activity, and if I read the primer right, that means we're looking at... three to six hours?"

[Bridge - USS Mac] Seeing the Sivaoan dip her head in greeting made Thea smile warmly in response, happy to have the Cadet present on the Bridge. She only knew to well how beneficial it would be and with them not being in a battle or serious situation, it would no doubt be a learning experience too. Something the O'Connell seemed to pick up on as the pilot spoke to Left Ear and suggested that the Cadet try her paw at navigation. When asked if she didn't mind, Thea appreciated the comment, knowing that this was the first time that Syl had dealt with her in this capacity. " I don't mind at all, I think it would be great for Left Ear to get some additional experience" Thea replied in a warm tone, before Crewman Bremmer offered up a response to her earlier question regarding the time frame that they had before Irani Prime was consumed. Again Thea appreciated the effort that Bremmer was making as being at the sec/tac console wasn't something that she normally did. In Thea's opinion it was all part of the job description and perhaps being out of her comfort zone would benefit Bremmer. It was all about confidence, belief in yourself and not becoming overwhelmed by everything. Of course Science would confirm the information but for the moment, Thea looked at Bremmer directly. " Thank you Crewman, continue monitoring the tactical scans".Once she had heard from everyone, Thea would naturally make a shipwide announcement but for now, crossed the short distance towards the command centre. Although wasn't ready to take her seat just yet, especially since she had just spent the last hour sitting down.

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Bridge] Left Ear hadn't expected to do anything but observe on the bridge, so the offer to actually gain some experience had her eyes widening in surprise and excitement. When Syl tacked on the question to the captain, her head swung back around to offer pleading eyes to Thea. Her approval sent the Sivaoan's tail into paroxysms of joy as she darted the few steps to the empty seat and sat gingerly. Excitement shouldn't overwhelm caution, she reminded herself. The young healer had learned early in her apprenticeship when a moment of exuberance in the lab had sent a stack of petri dishes crashing to the floor. She'd spent long hours cleaning up the glass and producing a new set. The Sivaoans didn't have replicator technology, so while they had means to mass produce such items, it was a long, hot process with molten glass and molds. Left Ear set her hands in her lap and peered expectantly at Syl, waiting for instructions. Tag Syl O'Connell, soft tag for Thea Baker

[ SCPO Kaya Som, Chief of Engineering | Engineering, USS Mac ]It was a typical day in Engineering. The warp core was thrumming away, hale and healthy. The duty shifts were moving through the ship keeping well ahead of maintenance. The short-statured, too-young Trill chief of Engineering had fallen into this rhythm. Slowly but surely, she'd gained the professional trust of most of the Engineering crew, and was learning better how to delegate. "You're fine, that's fine. Go watch," Kaya waved away an Ensign who was itching to go watch the sun go nova from the lounge. They had their own viewports down here, but not the big ones. Kaya set down her lunch, confirmed a few things on the panel, then tapped her comm badge. :comm: Engineering, Bridge. Shields calibrated for nova radiation wave, propulsion ready for emergency spin-up. Science stations have all the computing power they could want. :comm: Thea Baker

[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Shuttlecraft Daintree ] It was quite a rare sight to witness the 'death' of a planet. Especially, one that had once been the home to a civilization that was now vying for membership into the Federation. Isaiah had found himself entrenched in the knowledge the Aadoans had shared about their former home. He had even found a few choice locations to position sensors on the planet surface itself. There was a part of him that actually wanted to position the sensors physically, but he had to settle for transporting them from the shuttle. He looked over to his right to see Ensign Banyss' hands dancing over the consoles. "The final sensor is in position, sir," said the Edosian. Isaiah nodded. "Excellent. Check in with Astrometrics and make sure that telemetry is sound," Isaiah ordered. He then turned his attention to the panel before him to activate the comm system. =A=Shuttlecraft Daintree to Mac. The final sensor has been transported down to the surface." =A= Isaiah looked over to Banyss who lifted his center arm to deliver a thumbs up while he used the other two to set course for a return to the Mac's shuttlebay. =A= "Everything is set. We're headed back now. Forwarding our flight plan to confirm our approach." =A=Isaiah sent the flight plan for the Mac to confirm. Because of all the solar activity with their proximity to the planet and the star, he wanted to be certain that there were no gravitational eddies that they had overlooked. The Mac's sensors were a great deal more sensitive and far more broad than that of the shuttlecrafts. Once it was cleared, the Daintree would begin its approach. [Bridge - USS Mac] The reaction that she had gotten from Left Ear after giving Syl's idea approval was worth it and sure they were about to watch the death of a planet. But moments like this were pure joy and not to be missed, especially as it left another smile on the CO's face. Thea's attention was then needed elsewhere as Chief Som reported in from Engineering prompting Thea to move to the comm panel on the side of the command seat. =/\= Thank you Chief, hopefully things won't get too bumpy up here and if things are under control down there, feel free to come to the Bridge so you can get a decent view =/\= It only seemed fair that their CE got the chance to witness this properly and besides if anything needed Kaya's attention, there was the Engineering console not too far away. Then came another call this time from Isaiah and Thea had to admit that she was relieved to hear from her Boyfriend. Taking the Daintree out to position sensors on Irani Prime had made sense from a scientific point of view, although Thea would breathe a little easier once the shuttle and it's occupants were back safely. =/\= Excellent , we'll see you shortly Daintree =/\=Thea knew that she didn't have to tell Syl to acknowledge the flight path from the incoming shuttle and perhaps this would also help with Left Ear's lesson. Now was also a good time to probably sit down and so that's what Thea did.

[The Chasm of Hope - 10km underneath Freedom]
This small piece of the once great city of Freedom had been the home of Elder Rolis, his wife Mina and their 3 children for the last 7 cycles. Ever since the mass migration of the Aadoan, the family had retreated deeper into the expansive underground. For Rolis had refused to leave, despite the promises of lush green fields and the chance to live on the surface of the world that had been found for them. As far as he was concerned Freedom was their home and why should they abandon it, when the great Madova would protect them.
Thinking that the others were fools, especially that Morani who spouted lies about the mighty Irani bringing destruction to Freedom. Rolis was certain that the interlopers from the Federation were responsible so they could secretly take Freedom for themselves. So yes he didn't trust them from the second that they visited their world and so he did what any good Aadoan would do and that was to disappear and return when they had come to their senses.
Any objections were quickly silenced as no one dared argue with the Elder and Mina respected her husband's wishes. Prayers and offerings were then laid out in the proper way and the family never wavered in their duty to Madova and their world. With the exception of their eldest child Marale, who was concerned with how things were rapidly changing and with everyone else gone, had taken it upon herself to find a way to help her family even if her Father had forbidden it.
She knew that he would be angry but she wasn't naive to know that he was ill and that Madova wasn't going to save them from death either. Slowly realising that he should of forgone his pride to leave with the others but his stubbornness had won and if this didn't work then she had no other choice but to accept their fate once and for all.
Sneaking into her hiding place filled with some of the equipment that she had managed to recover on her walks. Marale took a moment to get her breathing under control before finding the beacon, in the hope that she could get it to work.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - USS Mac - Bridge]The display of excitement from Left Ear at her offer caused her to grin, and she nodded her own gratitude to the Thea when the Captain agreed it would be a good idea. Syl turned back to the spread of consoles in front of her as the Sivaoan joined her, and pulled up the navigation display. She had just finished explaining each part of the screen to the Cadet when the message came in from the shuttle. "Perfect timing." Sure enough, the intended flight path showed up on her screen, and she transferred it to the secondary console so Left Ear could see what she was doing. "Okay, so it's our job to make sure that the shuttle isn't going to be running into anything that could be dangerous or knock them off course. So we take the flight path that they sent us and line it up over our navigation screen like so..." The green dot representing the Daintree appeared, with a yellow dotted line connecting them to the center. "We run a quick but thorough sensor scan. Anything that might be problematic along the path will show up as red." Syl pointed to the buttons that would initiate the scan, then sat back to let her student do the work.

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Bridge] The cadet paid avid attention as Syl explained the workings of the navigation console. It was one of those things that was particularly strange to the Sivaoan as her own people didn't use maps; rather they navigated by sight, smell and familiarity with the forests of their home planet. Then Syl was asking her to do something, and Left Ear had a moment of panic, but running a scan sounded simple enough. Couldn't be much more difficult than using a tricorder. She hit the indicated buttons and waited while the computer did its thing, watching the screen for any data. The console bleeped that it was done and Left Ear examined the results, pointing to a little red blip. ' What's that?' she asked, squinting. ' Space debris?' Obviously something large enough that it might damage the shuttle if they ran into it. Tag Syl O'Connell

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Bridge, USS Mac ]"Aye-Aye," Bremmer responded as she kept her eyes on the sensors. Though, when Chief Som came on and said the shields were ready to deal with the radiation, the Petty Officer had a need to bring up the specs, and the data she had about supernovae. Between the sensor platforms that were deployed in the inner system and the Mac's own suite, there would be a hell of a take... but that would be a hell of a ride. "Captain, all of Commander Quinn's arrays are tied in. Closest platform is... one and a half light-minute from the star; so when it goes up, we'll know within two minutes." The beauty of faster-than-light communications would indeed report the initial blast, and the destruction of the array by the initial radiation burst, almost as soon as it would hit the array. "And from there, it'll be 43 minutes or so until we get the light show. The shields should give us about a minute of protection against it, if I get the math right. Then the hull will start to vaporize. Shockwave will be... seven and a half hours behind it, moving about about a tenth the speed of light."Now, for someone who'd never attended the Academy, whose basic schooling was woefully inadequate by most Federation standards, Bremmer did have to do a lot of catching up to be ready for that assignment. Including getting a primer on supernovae and astrophysics to at least understand the situation she was in. Some of the concepts were fairly simple for her to grasp, but some others were fairly esoteric. Like the exponential rate at which their shields would fail if they were any closer to the star when the radiation burst would reach them at the speed of light; something to do about power density and the fraction of the surface of a sphere at their current position... The Petty Officer managed a deep breath. "There isn't anything inhabited within at least fifty light-years, is there? Because from what I've read, this is going to put out enough radiation to sterilize everything within 25 light-years, and cause serious damage at up to fifty..." Now, that was asked from no one in particular. This was the kind of event that was just barely within her ability to grasp in the merest of ways, and while she knew someone like Mister Niles would actually be able to grasp the kind of energy involved, that wasn't her. Though, it was a good thing that radiation burst would only be moving at the speed of light; there would be time to evacuate, or build some kind of planetary-level protection, right?

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - USS Mac - Bridge]Syl nodded encouragement as Left Ear ran the scan as she'd directed. Sure enough, a little red dot appeared along the yellow path. "Whatever it is, at least it's small enough for them to avoid easily. So now we run another scan of the surrounding area and ask the computer to find a safe detour." This time, she tapped the buttons herself as she spoke, but made sure to move slowly enough that Left Ear could see what she was doing. She could hear Eliska talking to the Captain across the Bridge, and while waiting for the computer to do its job she glanced over her shoulder towards the woman at the tactical console. "Relax, PO. This isn't the first supernova the Federation has dealt with." It wasn't even the first time a Starfleet crew got to witness the event first-hand. But it was all new to Eliska, so Syl gave her a reassuring smile as she spoke before turning her attention back to her own console and the impromptu lesson.

[Bridge - USS Mac] The anticipation had become even more real as Thea settled into the centre seat and quietly observed what was going on around the Bridge. The Daintree was on it's way back, the invitation to Chief Som had been made and for the Doctor Captain everything was as it should be. Appreciating the significance of these moments both for the mission and seeing her crew help one another. It wasn't often that they got to do this in any sense of the word and Thea had saw no reason to stifle or deny the opportunities afforded to them right now. Tearing her gaze away from Syl and Left Ear when Bremmer began to speak, giving the Crewman her full attention. The information that she gave wasn't anything out of the ordinary and what was to be expected given the situation. Having read the reports regarding the last mission, Thea hoped that there wouldn't be any cause for concern and hopefully lessons had been learned. " Thank you Crewman, that ties in with what we know from the data that Science has been collecting" Thea replied, knowing that Bremmer was trying. When she then continued and asked if there was anything inhabited within the supernova's trajectory. Thea saw and heard the nerves within the question, before Syl then encouraged Bremmer to relax. There was a warm smile directed to their pilot as she wasn't wrong. It wouldn't do anyone, any good to be nervous because everything was already in place and taken care of. " We've followed in the footsteps of some great crews in getting to witness such an event and as to answer your question. There was only one other inhabited system in close proximity and they've also been relocated".Thea hoped that the reassurance from both Syl and herself would help Bremmer and stop any further worry.
