[Lyric - First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] She hadn't forgotten her skills, not one bit since coming into the First Officer's Office. What she needed to do was prove that she had skills? "Thank you." She said, even though it may be a bit of a pause before she answered. She didn't take another sip of water or had another bite of the knish for a little bit while she listened. She gave a small smile. Kerelia sounded like a wonderful place to study. She nodded in affirmation as she understood. "I'm not worried about the ocean and I'm still young. I may have plenty of time to take up another study. Firstly, you're right." Lyric's eyes moved towards the first officer and began to study her. She took in her family and her grandchildren. Although, she did not know all their names. Because she hadn't really met them. Lyric took a drink of water before she started. "You're a 42 year old mother and grandmother who started late in Starfleet. You didn't start in the Academy. You have a charming husband -" Referring to her family photograph. "Who can cook, four children, five grandchildren. You love to read printed works as you have a book case full of printed works. What I thought may have been holobooks is not. You like to look at the stars." She didn't know what type of materials she liked to read. "You seem to enjoy cooking and baking." She could go on with her observations on just one visit. But she could not deduce her thoroughly. She just learned what she observed when she came in. She didn't know what else to observe or deduce. "Also, on a side note, two of your lovely grandchildren are under the age of 6 years old." She paused to take another drink, but didn't consume another knish. "I hope I didn't forget something." She thought. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy chuckled, and ate another knish. There were a couple of mistakes. "Well, you got the ages off," she pointed out. "I'm 63, not 42, and the oldest grandson is only turning 6 in a couple of weeks. I can see how you got it wrong, considering they're quite tall. Take after their dads."She stood up and went around the table, to the family picture. "Over here are myself and my husband, Max," she pointed out. "The older two sons, boys, the twins, are Gerald and Lawrence. They're both 34 years of age, so about a decade older than you are. The younger two are Thomas, 18 years old, who's currently in college, and Anna, age 14, who lives with us on the station much against her will. The grandkids are Michael, Jules, Helen, Alyssa, and Benjamin. Mikey is the eldest, and Benny is the youngest."Judy sat back down. "Overall, I'd say your observations are solid, and I'm quite flattered about my age. 42 is actually the age I joined Starfleet, almost 22 years ago. Will be 22 years in June. About a year later, I met Max."Judy was very strategic. She revealed that she'd met Max just less than 21 years ago (in 2359), but had the twins 34 years ago (2346), to see if the young scientist would notice that the numbers didn't quite line up. [Lyric-First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric didn't really know she was wrong until she was told. Ages were often hard to tell on photographs and she really thought she was younger than 63. She also didn't know names of the people in the photograph. It was an interesting bit of information. She didn't usually read the personnel files of everyone on board the station. Maybe she needed more work or practice on observations. But she was enlightened. "Thank you." Lyric replied, about the solid observations. As she listened, she began to consider something. "You joined Starfleet at 42 years old, but if you met Max a year later, you would be 43. By then, you would not be able to have the twins and Anna. You would have had to be in your twenties and before you were 33-34 years old to have babies. Anna is actually the youngest sibling. You had to have the twins first, then Anna." Lyric wasn't even sure she was right. But something didn't add up with those numbers. "So, you had to have met Mr Williams earlier than Starfleet."

"That's a very sharp observation and a good hypothesis," she complimented. "However, as you know, our hypotheses don't always hold up to further scrutiny, and that's part of the process. In this case, we can consider the evidence that Lawrence and Gerald have the last name Eastman, my maiden name, whereas Thomas and Anna have the last name Williams, Max's name. There's also a very large age gap between the twins and the younger two children."Judy took another sip of water, and then continued. "I think I've tested you enough, so I'll just tell you: Lawrence and Gerald's biological father is my ex-husband. Since my ex and I split when the boys were very young, Max is basically the only father they've had," she explained. "That's also the reason for the age gap - since Max was so good with Gerald and Lawrence, we decided to have kids together. It's funny how much younger people will assume you are when you have a young child."It was clear from Judy's tone just how much she adored Max and all her kids.

[ Lyric- First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric noted the nod and smile. She didn't mind talking about family. It was great that Cmdr. Eastman actually recognized her sharp observation and a good hypothesis. Of course, some hypothesis didn't always hold up to further scrutiny. "True." She replied. "I may also need some more practice or skill sharpening." She listened to the differences of twins and younger two children. It made sense all together. She hoped that she did well enough for any other mission. She kept the fact that she may have had another husband before Max. "I deduced that you may have had an ex-husband. The reason why I didn't bring him up was I didn't know if he was good to you or bad." She didn't want her to relive any trauma. "Like leaving on bad terms." She explained. "And triggering bad memories."
The tone she picked up showed that she adored Max and all her kids.

It was rather sensitive not to bring up the ex. "It wasn't exactly a fun divorce, but I can laugh about it now, considering it was so many years ago," she answered, concerning her divorce and her ex. "Besides, if it hadn't happened, I wouldn't have gotten my PhD, joined Starfleet, or met Max. The simple reality of our existence is that sometimes, we have to fall down so we can get up."Judy took a sip of water. "There's an old saying which holds that life is like a wheel. It doesn't matter if you're up or down right now, you just need to hold onto the wheel, because you'll come back up eventually. That's possibly the greatest pearl of wisdom that any elder can offer to the youth like yourself. Just stay on the wheel."

But they never divorced or the thought of divorce ever ran through their minds. Had they, she would have been sat down. Things would be different. She didn't bring that touchy subject up. As long as the commander could look past it, it was ok, to her. But she didn't have any relationships unless you accounted for Starfleet. "I have a relationship," She finally said. It may sound weird. "With Starfleet. I wanted to further my education and it seemed they offered the best way to better myself. And not only that, meet new people."
She listened about falling down and getting up again. She had done that so many times and took a sip of her own water as well. She picked up her uneaten knish and took a bite. "My Mom used to say something similar and so did my Grandma. They used to always tell me, "When one door closes, another door opens." I think it means that one opportunity closes behind you and another opens in front of you. Your advice is wonderful and thank you." She smiled.

"The other things you pointed out, your education, other people, those are good sources of fulfillment. This organization has some of the most incredible people in the quadrant, the Federation's best and brightest. I'd definitely advise you to get to know the people around you, take interest in them, and maybe even give dating a shot if a cute guy comes around," she advised, winking a little as she said the last statement. "On which topic, I've been talking about myself for so long. Why don't you tell me a little about who you are?"

Starfleet was always on her mind. She was eager for adventure, too. 7y6z; "Is it good to love opportunities and adventure, too?" She asked. "The missions to planets sound like an adventure you wouldn't forget and you learn?" She couldn't help her curious questions. Maybe she likened the idea of having a career in Starfleet were something great. "Like reading is also a fulfillment. Does the station have holodecks?" Not only were they great for enrichment as well. She noticed the wink after the hint of giving dating a try. "That's what my Mom always said to me." She giggled. "Dating." "Oh? I didn't think you were talking about yourself too long. I think you have a lot of knowledge and history." She thought otherwise. "I was raised to listen to my elders and respect them." She explained. "My parents and I weren't always in San Francisco." She took a little longer swig of water.
"My Dad moved my Mom and I into San Francisco to be closer to his job. We lived in Northern California. I didn't have the choice. I wanted to stay in Northern California. I began to notice how San Fran. wasn't such a bad place. I made a lot of new friends. I took up the Debate Club in high school, then I joined a Diplomacy Club. From there, I found I liked Diplomacy and how it felt. I was eager to learn and decided after my graduation, I would join Starfleet to further my education." It seemed she loved to learn.

Her laughter died down as she listened. "Few friends of mine always went to the beaches and parks all the time. Hiking, biking, and surfing. They still do surfing and surfing competitions. The Bay Area weather's still the same, I believe." She had some degrees in science. "I have a Bachelor's in Science and Geology." Lyric followed her gaze to the alcove above her desk. She could see pennants from her colleges. She hadn't had the time to show off hers yet. Her experience was vast, it seemed. It made her think about pursuing some other courses in colleges. She still believed she was still capable of pursuing other degrees and diplomas as well. "You have a lot of specialties." She noted when Cmdr Eastman looked back at her.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]"I do have a handful of specialties. Crushing dreams, paperwork, embarrassing my children..." Judy joked, before giving a serious answer. "I had one major field of study, and that was Civil Engineering. I got my Bachelor's, and then went right to Grad school for the Master's degree. The PhD came a while later, after the divorce. My dissertation was about the merits of holistic urban planning considerations in terraforming projects."Judy sounded proud, and rightfully so, of her degrees and education. "I've actually written papers even after finishing school, during my time in Starfleet. None as long and intense as the dissertation, but I've managed to put out papers fairly often. The last one was about seismic retrofitting on planetside spacedocks. I rolled that one out around this past December, after my surgery."

"Starfleet Academy wouldn't let me pursue a career in diplomacy unless I chosen a course that would help me develop a better understanding of the world. I researched and found if I got a bachelor's degree in science, it would open a door for me." Lyric could go on about her career. But she had a feeling she would be taking too long. "It actually did open a door for me. I found liked science as a whole. Despite that the details of science is often messy." Lyric couldn't compare to Judy's education, but she was sounding encouraging to her. Even positive. "Have you ever had a Nobel Peace Prize?" In regards to her papers. She hadn't really thought of writing papers. "I never thought of writing any papers. Maybe I will write one one day." She liked the fact that the cmdr did a lot. She had a lot to show for too. "I hope you weren't hurt or anything?"

"Now, with the new heart, I feel better than ever."Other than her heart, Judy was in phenomenal shape for her age, and it showed. "Anyway, if diplomacy is something you want to dip your toe into, then I'd suggest you try to branch into areas of science that could help us, the command team, in negotiations. Anything that helps us understand the alien cultures around us, or the things they might be interested in," she added helpfully. "The advantage of being at the very edge of Federation space is that we are surrounded by other civilizations."

Would she read what she had written? Her curious mind wondered and was intrigued. When she heard about what she had, she learned about heart disease and how it affected people. Some infants even had heart issues and they were given heart replacements. It saved their lives. She had heard about heart replacements and they are a marvel of heart medicine and procedures. New artificial hearts were good. "I've heard about how heart replacements are a marvel of heart medicine and procedures." She said as she took another knish. "It helps prolong life and as long as the body accepts the replacement." She took a small bite. "I sometimes wonder how the doctors can replace a heart. The heart has so many connections, it must be hard work that is worth a life."
As Lyric listened, she couldn't help but have her interest piqued in diplomacy and trying to branch into the areas of science. "I can help with negotiations with any one. If some civilization speaks a different language, I'll need a translator. I also personally view science as a way to understand how they are. I spend a lot of time analyzing everything. Even behaviors." She considered something. "I'm not really fond of wasps or bees as I was stung by a nest of them in the ground. It was then I decided to look into their behavior." She paused for a moment. "I wanted to know more about their structure and how they live."

The bee comment struck her as a bit of a non-sequitur, and yet it was a very salient one, and she appreciated that. "It's funny you should mention bees, since we have the Tholians so close to us here. They have some insect-like tendencies," she remarked. She then stood up and walked over to her desk, motioning for Lyric to follow along. At the desk, in between the various tchotchkes and small pictures of the family, Judy reached into a drawer and retrieved a laminated map. "What can you tell me about our friends the Tholians, and what would you say is the most striking thing about this map?" she asked.

[ Lyric- First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric could hypothesize and theorize all she wanted about the Tholians as she followed the cmdr to her desk. They were remarkable beings and looking at the map, she answered to the best of her ability. "If the Tholians are like honeybees, then they are protecting the one being that matters to them. They're protecting their queen. Their queen sends them out to collect pollen for the welfare of their nest. In return, the pollen is made into honey. It's supposedly supposed to feed the colony and the future of their hive. Tholians defend their territory against any threats." Lyric looked around the map to see what else was there. "They also have a team of alliances that surround their territory. Another note is if they are strong enough to initiate mind control as well, they can also control those alliances. But it's kind of far-fetched and out of the scope of reality. The red part looks like the Federation? Or Neutral Zone?"
