4 days before S1M1 and S1E2[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy moved over from her desk, and then sat at the conference table. It was a large, wooden piece of furniture, as distinguished and old as most of the furniture in the First Officer's space. She preferred the more egalitarian, spacious table for meetings, even one-on-one, instead the more regal desk she worked at. And a meeting this was. She had on her agenda a meeting with Ens. Lyric Sinclair, a new Science Officer who'd taken up the First Officer's general offer of meetings for all. Judy had prepared some meeting munchies, as was her custom, namely little baked knishes filled with cheese. Now, she sat at the table, plate of knishes and pitcher of water sitting neatly in the middle, and waited.

[Lyric Sinclair- First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station]
Lyric hoped she wouldn't get lost on the station. It was easy to find out where the First Officer's Office was on Deck Three through a question she asked the computer. When she arrived at the door, she raised her fist and knocked on the door. She made a promise she wouldn't be so nervous. But she was nervous as this was her first time out on a Station.
She waited for Commander Eastman to tell her to come in.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]
A small smile crossed Judy's face when she heard a knock on the door. It was a very civilian practice, and as a late entrant to the Starfleet game (she'd joined at the age of 42), Judy was at home with civilian practices.
"Come on in!" she called out, as she then stood up to greet her guest at the door.
The doors came open, revealing to Lyric the expanses of the First Officer's large workspace. There was a modest alcove separated by a beaded curtain, which housed the workspace of Judy's yeoman, the large conference table flanked by ergonomic swivel chairs, a massive bookcase heavy with printed works, a window out onto space, a workspace for Judy with a wooden desk and various small photos, and a large picture hung on the wall of Judy, her husband Max, their four children, and their 5 little grandchildren (the oldest of them approaching the age of 6, the youngest only 1 year of age).
"Ensign Sinclair, I take it?" Judy then asked, as she extended her right hand for a shake. "Commander Eastman, First Officer. Welcome to my office."
Judy spoke in a manner that was warm and welcoming, but still quiet and dignified.

She pressed a button and the door swooshed open, revealing the expanses of the First Officer's large workspace. She hadn't expected such a large room in a space station. Then again, things did surprise her. She was used to the smaller offices in Star Fleet and as she stepped in, she gave a small friendly smile at the commander as she entered the room. The door closed with a hiss. The room also housed a yeoman's workspace, a large conference table flanked by swivel chairs, and what caught her attention were the books on a bookshelf. She was an avid reader of printed works herself. The books Lyric read were both printed and holobooks. She could also see a wooden desk, small photos, and even a large family picture. "Yes." Lyric spoke, but without the formalities of ranks. She had spoken at length on the transport from Earth to Front Ear. She also remembered when she first boarded. Space-legs, she would later find out, was a 'trip' in itself. Not exactly falling. Just a little moment of uneasiness and perhaps dizziness to get used to the station's gravity. "Pleasure to meet you, Commander." She finally said, extending her own right hand for a shake. "Thank you. This is my first trip to a station out in space." Lyric was a little more nervous and she supposed that was normal when meeting a new commander.

Young officers like yourself are so nervous, so reverent towards me, but I can't even get my kids to make their beds in the morning."She chuckled slightly, and then redirected her attention to Lyric. "How have you been settling in?" she asked.

There was no reason for her to be sitting across unless there was 'some type of order'. She wasn't sure whether there was a seating arrangement. The other reason why she was reverent was because of her parents. The nervousness that was there was always there based on whether the meeting brought good news or bad news. She didn't really think she was in any trouble. Wouldn't there be another commanding officer there? She was sure that if she were in trouble, she'd know. "I'm only nervous meeting new people or I'm thinking I got into some sort of trouble," She said, not really sure whether it'd be every time. Perhaps. "But then again, I don't think I've really caused any trouble." Hearing that her own kids didn't make their beds brought a smile to her face. " Hm. They know to, but won't." She said, chuckling. " My Mom used to have that problem with me in the mornings before school. I never made my bed. That is until I joined Starfleet Academy and slept in the dorms. They always would instruct every cadet to make their beds a certain way. To be honest, I find the way they made them weird. They called the folding at the foot of the bed -- hospital corners. Hopefully, I won't have to do that here." That question had always been plaguing her. "How have I been settling in?" She thought to herself. " I guess I'm settling in pretty well." She admitted, eyeing the knishes with a little curiosity and saw a pitcher of water.

Graciously, Judy then poured water from the pitcher into two glasses. [ Lyric- First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station] "They were strictly into spot-checking every month." She told her. "It's interesting how they were using that particular bit of discipline. It taught me a lot though about responsibility and I'm guessing they did to be sure we weren't harboring any illegal substances." That was so old fashioned, too. "I'm not too worried about any spot checks." Lyric didn't know that officers offered refreshments during a meeting. She hadn't heard of a knish before nor tasted one. They looked delicious and might be sweet. She could only guess that they might be sweet. Or savory. "Knishes." She replied, hearing water being poured into two glasses. "Are they sweet or savory?" Now she was interested in knowing a little more about Judy and she was a little hungry.
Lyric wanted to bring up another subject, but decided to wait on that. Maybe she could bring it before they departed. Her question was something about furthering science studies in the field.

My husband will come in here every now and then to confiscate any chocolates I try to hide in my desk drawer," she shared. "These are savory. I used sharp cheddar, mozzarella, and gouda for the cheese mixture. I love to cook, and my husband is a chef by training, so food is a big deal for me."Judy ate one knish, sipped some water, and then continued. "Something tells me you didn't ask for this meeting just to hear me talk on and on about myself," she commented, in a tone that left it open for Lyric to bring up what she wanted to talk about.

Maybe the commanding officer wasn't really aware of the year or he had reasons to believe that we were young foolish young cadets." She was laughing. "Looks like we both of have chocolate addictions and hide them in places for later."
They sounded wonderful. But she never ate gouda or tried gouda before. The other two, she liked a lot. "I love cheddar cheese and mozzarella. I never had gouda." If she had a kitchen, she would burn water if she could. She had boiled the water until it evaporated and nothing was left in the pot. "I can't cook to save my life." She admitted. "I burned water."
Lyric took a knish and sampled it. It was good. "These are good." She complimented. "Family secret?"
Lyric chewed silently as she pondered over how to ask what she had on her mind. "I've been thinking about furthering my science career in the field. The Academy trained us in a classroom and required us to 'use the holodecks' for field training. But nothing really compares to real actual fieldwork." "Did that come out, right?" She hoped so.

"I'm a little more observant than when I was a teen." "And I'm very observant." She added, helpfully. She was back to being ambitious and had a desire for development. She wanted the higher officers to know she was reliable. "I'm always asking questions, making observations, and noting new things with a keen eye. I always feel emboldened when I feel like I'm doing something right." She also added.
She didn't eat another knish as she was thinking of more than geology. "I like studying new life and I wouldn't mind adding to our collective knowledge. I'm interested in learning about the oceans' life of new planets." She took another small drink of water and settled back into her chair. Science was always changing.

[Lyric - First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] She hadn't forgotten her skills, not one bit since coming into the First Officer's Office. What she needed to do was prove that she had skills? "Thank you." She said, even though it may be a bit of a pause before she answered. She didn't take another sip of water or had another bite of the knish for a little bit while she listened. She gave a small smile. Kerelia sounded like a wonderful place to study. She nodded in affirmation as she understood. "I'm not worried about the ocean and I'm still young. I may have plenty of time to take up another study. Firstly, you're right." Lyric's eyes moved towards the first officer and began to study her. She took in her family and her grandchildren. Although, she did not know all their names. Because she hadn't really met them. Lyric took a drink of water before she started. "You're a 42 year old mother and grandmother who started late in Starfleet. You didn't start in the Academy. You have a charming husband -" Referring to her family photograph. "Who can cook, four children, five grandchildren. You love to read printed works as you have a book case full of printed works. What I thought may have been holobooks is not. You like to look at the stars." She didn't know what type of materials she liked to read. "You seem to enjoy cooking and baking." She could go on with her observations on just one visit. But she could not deduce her thoroughly. She just learned what she observed when she came in. She didn't know what else to observe or deduce. "Also, on a side note, two of your lovely grandchildren are under the age of 6 years old." She paused to take another drink, but didn't consume another knish. "I hope I didn't forget something." She thought.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy chuckled. "Observant, attentive, and real humble too," she ribbed. "You have to remember to show your skills, not just tell me you have them."She took a sip of water. "I'll try to connect you with some research over on our planet, Kerelia. I can't promise the ocean, but I'll see what we can find," she then added, in a more encouraging tone. "But, if you'd like, we can test your powers of observation. Look around you, and tell me what you can observe and deduce about me." [Lyric - First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] She hadn't forgotten her skills, not one bit since coming into the First Officer's Office. She thought. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy chuckled, and ate another knish. There were a couple of mistakes. "Well, you got the ages off," she pointed out. "I'm 63, not 42, and the oldest grandson is only turning 6 in a couple of weeks. I can see how you got it wrong, considering they're quite tall. Take after their dads."She stood up and went around the table, to the family picture. "Over here are myself and my husband, Max," she pointed out. "The older two sons, boys, the twins, are Gerald and Lawrence. They're both 34 years of age, so about a decade older than you are. The younger two are Thomas, 18 years old, who's currently in college, and Anna, age 14, who lives with us on the station much against her will. The grandkids are Michael, Jules, Helen, Alyssa, and Benjamin. Mikey is the eldest, and Benny is the youngest."Judy sat back down. "Overall, I'd say your observations are solid, and I'm quite flattered about my age. 42 is actually the age I joined Starfleet, almost 22 years ago. Will be 22 years in June. About a year later, I met Max."Judy was very strategic. She revealed that she'd met Max just less than 21 years ago (in 2359), but had the twins 34 years ago (2346), to see if the young scientist would notice that the numbers didn't quite line up.
