[ Lyric S.- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] " Maybe Starfleet should update their uniforms. Instead of dark colors, they should- have more colorful options. You won't believe what I saw in the Museum. All the uniforms they ever had plus the old days when they had some kind of astronaut gear that looked so heavy, bulky, white, and had a patches on the side. Or badges." She looked over to Max, " No. I won't. A squeaky wheel always gets the most attention." She'd happily share the recipe. "I'll share the recipe with you. I'd have to get in touch with my Mom. She has the recipe in an old fashioned recipe box. I'll be happy to contribute to your next cookbook." Lyric was also talking in regards to cookbooks and acknowledging Anna as well. She watched the dogs walk into the kitchen to beg for food. "You have an audience, Mr Williams." [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]"They try this every day, and it never works for them," Max answered, looking at the dogs. "No food. None for you. No."The dogs continued to beg. "Well, technically, they used to feast with us. We got them a few months after the War, when Anna was 9 years old, and she fed them prodigious amounts of food, vegetables most of all," Judy recalled. "If she hadn't, she might've passed me in height by now.""Mom, I'm not the only one who ever fed the dogs and you know it," Anna protested, as they took their seats at the table. The entire family sat down on one side, with Anna in the middle between her two loving, doting parents. "Now, allow us to introduce the recipes. We have salmon, oven-baked, with rosemary and garlic on a bed of spinach, in my family tradition. We have pasta alfredo, with homemade sauce. We have salad, with dressing optional. My personal favorite is the cheese platter: reblochon, camembert, roquefort, comte, and if you don't like the strong French cheese, mozzarella," Judy presented the meal she and her man had prepared. [Lyric- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric smiled. "They are probably the most healthiest dogs then having eaten all those secret vegetables."
Lyric took a seat, as she surveyed the options of food. Some were familiar, the cheese platter was not except for the mozzarella. She wasn't familiar with the other cheeses. "I've never really had any strong French Cheeses and I'm pretty familiar with mozzarella having it on pizza and eggplant parm." Lyric placed her utensils on the side of her plate and put the folded napkin on her lap. "This looks good."

"You said you had thoughts about the Tholians," Anna said to Lyric, trying to ignore her parents making eyes at each other around her. "Do you think we appease them too much, or not enough?"

She wasn't about to talk about the Tholians over dinner. But to enlighten the youthful teen, she decided to tell her. "Yes I do have some thoughts about the Tholians." She really didn't answer the second question quickly as she took a bite of her salmon. "It all depends on what we've done to appease them." She replied. "And another thought crossed my mind. Whether the Tholians are an aggressive group of beings that warn all those who come too close to their territories, will be either met with their own 'armada'."

Everyone has learned not to build settlements anywhere near Tholian space, as one can see on the map; this has been the status quo for longer than you, or myself and Max, have been alive, and the Tholians remain just as mistrustful. They don't go out of their way to make war with us, and they sell their silk sometimes, but they have no interest in cooperation, only in being left alone."Anna served herself, taking salmon, pasta, and a small amount of salad, and Max took cheese from each kind as well as salad. "So are you saying they're teenagers?" Max asked Judy, gently teasing Anna in this manner. "Most international relations, in my experience, can be understood by taking a mom's perspective, and analyzing the sides as toddlers or teenagers. It's remarkable," Judy added, directing her words to everyone, as she served herself, taking a serving for now mostly of salmon and salad.

Klingons used to be enemies of the Federation. Vulcans not so much. Romulans may be." She gave a brief pause before chuckling at Max's next comment. "Hmm. Maybe they're all antisocial goths." She said, by explanation.
"Or an analytical scientists' view?" She asked by way of suggestion and sneaking a look to Anna. "Or maybe Tholians need a teacher that is willing to teach them?" She looked towards Judy and Max next. "How do they react to young teens?"

Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]In between bites, Judy tapped on the table. "If you take the analytical route, then you've built your hypothesis on two key assumptions. You've assumed that the Tholians' work processes, thought process, and society is structured like ours, and you've assumed the Tholians are treating the playing field as roughly level, as you are," she explained. "We already know, for a fact, that neither assumption is correct. Their society, with its rigid castes and punctuality obsession, is built on the fundamental postulate that inertia is the most powerful property."A glance from Max drove Judy to clarify. "They treat the universe as static. To them, nothing is subject to change, not an individual's profession, not the nature of a society, and not the possession of whatever small meteorite. Humanity, and many humanoid societies, works in the opposite manner. Everything is moving, changing, fluid, in flux. Careers come and go, Empires rise and fall, enemies become friends and friends become enemies. Much as it may sound absurd to you if I told you that nothing is ever subject to change, it will sound absurd to a Tholian to be told that things can and do change."She took a long drink of water. "The second fault in your logic is that the Tholians don't see the playing field as level. They look at humanoids as inferiors, genetically, inherently, and absolutely. The humanoids who end up within their borders are, to them, either dangerous wolves or disruptive termites to dispose of or beasts of burden to use, and the humanoids outside are like tigers or sharks, dangerous animals to be scared away, pacified, or avoided. You may try to make a tiger happy with you, if you were trapped together with him in a cave, but you would generally give the tiger a wide berth, because murder is just what it does. Since we've established that Tholians don't believe in change, they don't consider that the tiger can be tamed, much less domesticated, which leads them to continue treating the tiger as a tiger."Judy took another breath before finishing off. "Put together, their perception of humanoids and their rejection of change means that if one human comes up and tries to befriend them, they'll look at it as a tiger coming up to you slowly, like it's trying to pretend it's not a carnivore. When you accept their postulates about the universe, you can understand why they wouldn't give you an ounce of credibility. They'll assume you're here to eat them, but you're trying to trick them to get it easier."

[ Lyric - First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric was stunned into silence by the cmdr's debate. Maybe she should have kept her big mouth shut? Oh she enjoyed good healthy debates. Was this even a debate or pointing out faults to her logic? Lyric was grasping at straws. Her theories and assumptions were ways to 'gain knowledge'. "Well, maybe that's their problem- using the caste system is flawed. It shows that the system is due to fail as well as being punctual. No normal organic being is that perfect." A perfect civilization without any thing is just another 'Atlantis' or 'Bastille' waiting to happen. It was due to collapse. "If they are that perfect, then look at what happened to Atlantis and Bastille. Those two great civilizations crumbled because they reached an advancement. Then they sunk." Lyric paused a moment. "All great civilizations crumble and die." "The Universe is not a level playing field. It never was what I thought or felt." Lyric remarked in a defense. "The universe is chaotic. I was just saying other factors like war, hostility, and a great fear of other war-like civilizations may have convinced the Tholians that we are to be 'forever' banned from their 'society'. It's not because of tigers murdering others. There are many peaceful humans, humanoids, species out in the Universe. To judge a single person based on his or her past ancestors is like condemning every single race there is in the Universe." On a personal note, Lyric felt like what she was saying may produce more debate. She wasn't really sure whether she was defending her logic or standing up for what she felt. "The Tholians are a judgmental group of beings. I have never met a Tholian so how am I supposed to know how they're truly like? I spent all of my time on Earth studying sciences."
"Tigers for one thing don't murder. They rely on instincts. They're not a tamed pet. They're wild and untamed big cats. A tiger only thinks of protection of itself, of it's family, and it's territory. They will hunt for food. The difference between a tiger and a Tholian is their intelligence. Who can talk and not roar?"

Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Max eyed Judy with some concern, worried that she was going to keep going after the Ensign with the relentlessness and ferocity he knew his wife was capable of. "I have a leg up on you, that's true, since I'm more familiar with the Tholians, but such is the scientific process. The facts are revealed to us in pieces, and sometimes they support our theories, but sometimes they don't. That's why we keep investigating, instead of acting on our initial theories," she explained, easing up the intensity but not ceding any ground. Max wasn't satisfied, so he poked Judy. "Ow!" she protested. "You devil!"He met her eyes. "I wasn't claiming that the universe is static, that people can't change, or that the Tholians are like tigers. I was setting out that they treat it as though it's static, and that they view us as we'd view a tiger. This new information means we should reconsider..."Another poke cut Judy off. "I hypothesize that Max wants me to ease up a little," she quipped. "He's always been the calm, steady one, letting me be a little more all over the place. It's why we're so good for each other.""I've come to terms with the fact that Judy wins every argument she gets into," Max added. "That's because I'm good at choosing my arguments more than anything else," she countered, before finally digging into her food. "It's because of rule #1. Mom is always right," Anna interjected, before helping herself to seconds.

Who can talk and not roar?" [Cmdr. [ Lyric- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric was still silent as she hadn't any clue what she got herself into and of course, she wasn't one to 'Blurt out any expletive'. After all, she was a guest. That would sure fire way get her fired from this station or worse yet...She didn't need to 'say anything' in that fashion. She was nearly done with her salmon and wondered if she should get seconds. It was like she had met her match. "Without- any sort of theories, or scientific evidence, research, or inquiries, or hypothesis, or investigations, we would be living in a dark shadow of 'not knowing' what's really out there." Lyric had another way of putting things into a different perspective. "Had the warp drive never been invented, we wouldn't be explorers of space. We wouldn't be where we are now. We'd still be using a fuel source that would continue to tear up the ozone layer and only going to the planets in our solar system. We wouldn't have knowledge of other species. We wouldn't even have a database of allied species, and non-allied species." Lyric was reciting something she had learned from a text book she read. It may have been old. "We wouldn't even have a James T Kirk. He'd still be in Indiana married to his wife, Amanda." Lyric was surprised as the cmdr dug into her food at the mention of picking her arguments. Lyric suddenly wished she had declined. If that was what the cmdr invited her for? An argument over the Tholians? She decided that it was better to keep her investigations a secret from the cmdr. She decided to not say anything about that. Lyric knew all too well of that saying. But the Cmdr was not her mother. Lyric had been for the most part, not an aggressive tiger. She wasn't even out to murder anyone. She set out to expand her career and to work as an Ensign in the science department.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Having cooled off from the heat of the fight, Judy could now see that she'd pushed her debating partner into a shaky emotional space. Certainly, the attempt to defend the scientific method - which Judy herself favored - read as that. "Something tells me I've overwhelmed you a little, haven't I?" she asked, leaning into her more maternal side. "You just had your First Officer take an idea you had and tear into it, rather viciously at that. That's enough to frighten anyone, so I'm sorry about that. I can assure you that I don't go around looking for Ensigns to argue with. That's what I have a daughter who wears short skirts in the dead of winter for."Anna gently elbowed her mother. "I invited you here, to meet my family, because I think you're a promising young lady. Your idea about the Tholians is perhaps a little naïve, but sometimes I wish I could be more naïve again myself. I see a lot of potential in you, and a lot of ambition, and I want to be a door you can come to when you need support," the older woman further explained herself. "I just got a little carried away debating, and I'm sorry for that."Max met Judy's eyes again. She was a proud woman, and she didn't like admitting her mistakes. However, she also knew it was necessary sometimes. Part of being an adult was admitting your mistakes, and at 63 years of age, Judy was an adult.

[ Lyric- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric wouldn't really admit that type of weakness. In fact, she never had an idea torn in to, even from her instructors. They welcomed most of her ideas and theories. The instructors were always supportive. But always pointing out extra bonus points. Of course, being overwhelmed had it's second guesses...Then hearing the cmdr apologize was nice. But she was guarding and defending the scientific method. The very foundations of science existed on the questions in the scientific method and perhaps she hadn't debated all that much about Tholians. She could tell that the cmdr was being honest. "But being naive is normal at my age. I was always told to keep an open mind." The open mind was always looking ahead and the future. "The Tholians sound like they live in the past. The problem with living in the past creates more problems in the future. Keeping their 'caste' system and 'I'm Holier than thou' attitude does little to advance their race. It only proves that they're an inferior species. An inferior species doesn't always look towards the future and think that things do change. Humanity advances. Klingons advances, Vulcans advances, and the more they do advance, everyone advances. But the Tholians, by how they sound, are living in the past." Lyric proved another truthful point. "As everyone advances, the Tholians have yet to venture outside their galaxy...because they are afraid of every single species of advanced beings." She wasn't sure whether she was right about the Tholians. "That means they have no technological advances other than their own shuttles."

"My dear, I think that's more than enough of the Tholian topic for now," she said gently. "Perhaps you can set out a stronger hypothesis to test once you've had the chance to make more observations, to read about them properly. Part of being a scientist is knowing to accept when we don't know enough yet, and need to collect more data."Judy was happy to close this topic now. This argument was starting to feel almost painful in its asymmetry, as one of them had lovely ideas, and the other had the weight of facts. This wasn't a proper debate. "You'd mentioned Kirk earlier," she pointed out. "I'll be honest, I was never too enthused by that one. Why him?"

She could lie and not say she found anything of value. She didn't start the Tholian topic anyway. So she already figured she didn't need to bring it up. She was probably overdoing her debate now about them. Oh? Kirk? "Kirk did things heroically despite not following the orders and he was the first captain to ever pass his exam by cheating. They couldn't prove he cheated on it. Anyone knows that the Kobayashi Maru can't be won. But he managed to succeed." She wasn't really debating on that. "Captain Kirk's the second captain of the USS Enterprise, and he went on many missions to planets. Fighting Khan, whom he banished to Seti Alpha...IV? V?" Khan was a character. "Khan went nuts."

"It's funny you should mention his cheating on the Kobayashi Maru, since I actually think that's one of the negative marks on his record," she observed. "James Kirk was very brave, and very accomplished, and no one can ever take that away from him, but I think the decision to cheat represents a certain mindset. It's the kind of approach of someone who thinks the rules don't apply to them, and they don't have to follow procedures and rules. Like a certain child."She eyed Anna. "I follow all the rules, mom," the young woman protested. "Ehh," Judy dismissed. "My other thought on him is that he was a brave captain, he was, but so was all of the Enterprise crew. One of the things you learn, especially when you serve in tricky situations like the War, is that the ones carrying out the orders, the men and women of the lower ranks, are at least as heroic as the Captains and Commanders who issue the orders. It's usually not those of us like me, sitting on our chairs on the Bridge, who are killed or wounded in action."Judy had been wounded in action. She'd shattered her right hip in a fall during the Dominion War, and she had a Purple Heart medal on display (alongside her other medals). However, she'd lost crewmen under her during her service as First Officer in wartime. The respect for the common soldier, as opposed to idol worship of senior officers, was an emotionally significant issue to her.

[ Lyric- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] " James Kirk was also known to be a dare devil too." She pointed out as she recalled reading how he got into trouble with the law once when he was a kid. "He didn't want to look or come out as a failure." Lyric amended. "If I studied for a test all night long and that morning, I took the test. I was feeling accomplished and positive. That is until I got the test results and found I had failed it. Everyone else passed the test but me. I'd feel like a failure despite all the studying I did." Lyric explained her logic. It may not be sound, but it she felt it was. "Kirk possibly didn't want to fail that test and all he thought was succeeding and achieving what he set out to do on the Kobayashi Maru." She turned to look at Anna as she protested. "However, the captain is actually responsible for the actions of the crew." She pointed out another tidbit of lessons. "If the crew didn't follow the captains' orders, I think they would be chewed out or reprimanded, or given a court marital. I think Kirk had many of them. But he continued to represent the Federation."
Lyric took a sip of water from her glass. "All these rules and procedures are also meant not only to protect us, but if something causes a captain to break them, it's for a good reason."
