[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy tapped gently on the table. The bee comment struck her as a bit of a non-sequitur, and yet it was a very salient one, and she appreciated that. "It's funny you should mention bees, since we have the Tholians so close to us here. They have some insect-like tendencies," she remarked. She then stood up and walked over to her desk, motioning for Lyric to follow along. At the desk, in between the various tchotchkes and small pictures of the family, Judy reached into a drawer and retrieved a laminated map. "What can you tell me about our friends the Tholians, and what would you say is the most striking thing about this map?" she asked. [ Lyric- First Officer's Office, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] Lyric could hypothesize and theorize all she wanted about the Tholians as she followed the cmdr to her desk. They were remarkable beings and looking at the map, she answered to the best of her ability. "If the Tholians are like honeybees, then they are protecting the one being that matters to them. They're protecting their queen. Their queen sends them out to collect pollen for the welfare of their nest. In return, the pollen is made into honey. It's supposedly supposed to feed the colony and the future of their hive. Tholians defend their territory against any threats." Lyric looked around the map to see what else was there. "They also have a team of alliances that surround their territory. Another note is if they are strong enough to initiate mind control as well, they can also control those alliances. But it's kind of far-fetched and out of the scope of reality. The red part looks like the Federation? Or Neutral Zone?" [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]From a different drawer, Judy retrieved her glasses. They had rectangular lenses, and a grey horn-rimmed frame. "Well, that's an interesting assessment, except that the Tholians don't have a queen," she explained, as she put on the glasses. "We don't know much about their government, but their society is fundamentally predicated around their Lattice, a sort of shared awareness. Beyond that, they have rigid castes, they are fiercely territorial, and quite xenophobic, one could even say assholes, more like wasps than honeybees."She leaned against the side of her desk, though she remained standing for the moment. "However, going back to the original map, I think there are two things that are striking. On the one hand, we have the fact that we're surrounded by so many foreign nations - the Klingons over there in red, the Tholians, the Gorn, the Nyberrites - and we're so far from core Federation space, that's the first. The second is the fact that there is so much unknown here, especially over down, down and to the right from where the map ends. In that blankness, that unknown, there is immense potential."

A sudden thought came to her. "What if one person visited the Tholians and talk to them?" "Has anyone ever tried to communicate with the Tholians? See if they are willing to have peaceful, diplomatic relations with them? Have anyone tried the one person approach?" She was talking about a one on one meeting like they were doing here. Lyric stood standing there, gazing at the map thoroughly. She caught sight of each alliance and what may be construed as an act of 'war' against them. Perhaps these locations were something they considered an invasion. "I have to say they may be assholes, but there's always a chance to try for peace. Maybe, they view an armada dangerous and an act of war. Too many people seemed to have formed around their area of space. These peoples are acting like the old space race. A race to get there first. If you think about all the boundaries and alliances, they may be thinking that there's an invasion brewing."

We've had the Tholians as neighbors for 200 years, and many of the societies here have been around for as long as recorded history exists. The Tholians are a known quantity," she explained, as she then sat down. "We already know that they don't treat any non-Tholian as an equal. We know that they don't have much interest in reaching out and exploring, we know that they are quick to perceive threats and violations, and we know they resent the notion of cooperating with their neighbors, whether that's us or the Klingons. To be honest, I'm surprised the Academy didn't cover them," she then added. "It's been this understanding of their ways, and the ample space we've given them, that's kept us from war with them thus far. If you'd like to immerse yourself in the study of Tholians, and think of a possible pathway to a lasting peace, you could surely win a Nobel Peace Prize for that."

Societies evolve." If they were a known quantity, that meant that they're wholly into themselves. It would be nice to at least try to be on friendly terms. " Have they ever destroyed any ships that come into their area of space?" She asked, only to gain some more knowledge. Lyric was considering the facts in front of her. "Why didn't the Academy cover them?" "I'm not sure why they didn't cover them. Maybe they didn't want inexperienced cadets knowing about how the Tholians are and they would try to go into their territory and start a war." The ring of the Nobel Peace Prize sounded good. But then she'd be a little 'greedy' or not apart of the group. Perhaps in her spare time. She could try to think of a possible pathway to a lasting peace with the Tholians. "I think the Tholians may be uninterested in other civilizations because they are terrifying to them. For one, they could have studied every civilization that neighbors them and deemed them to be an aggressive group. Every civilization had to have some war in the past. They could be monitoring every civilization, every base, every station remotely by a far-range sensor."
"What if they're just plainly afraid to say that they're all afraid of us?"

There are resources in our database that can explain them a lot better than I can," she directed, calmly trying to pivot away from the debate. "Perhaps there is some key to the Tholian heart that we've been missing, and the best way to find it would be thorough research."Judy was a little jaded, but she was open to being proven wrong. "In any case, I have my paperwork to get back to, and I'm sure you have work as well, but I'd love to keep talking. Perhaps you can come over for dinner at my quarters tonight?"The dinner invitation was extended sincerely, and was a sign of trust and affection. Judy wouldn't invite just anyone to dine with her family.

She hadn't ever been asked to dinner at any one's quarters tonight. "Sure. That sounds nice." Lyric was surprised. "What time should I arrive?"

Around 1900 hours
[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]The living quarters occupied by the Eastman-Williams family were a very pleasant space by design. The main living space was a large, open combination of living room, dining room, and kitchen, retrofitted at the First Officer's direction and expense with proper cooking facilities. Outside of the kitchen area, which was tiled, the place was carpeted. The dining table was much larger than the three residents needed, having space enough for 8, and a portion of it was taken up by Anna and her Physics homework. There were four doors inside the quarters, connecting the living space to four rooms: the master bedroom, the bathroom, Anna's bedroom, and the room intended as a study. This room had been repurposed to be occupied by Judy and Max's model railroad, but with its door shut it appeared as just another room. In the living space now, the group was assembled. Max and Judy were both in the kitchen, and coordinated in their outfits: she was in a royal-blue dress and grey scarf, while he wore grey slacks and a royal-blue button-down shirt. Their aprons were matching too, reading "don't kiss this cook; s/he's taken". Anna was not coordinated, attired in a white "I NY" hoodie and blue jeans. "Your guest is supposed to be here at 7, right, mom?" Anna asked, looking at the grandfather clock in the room. "Our guest, and yes," Judy replied, glancing at Max's wristwatch. "We are a family. We make decisions as a family, and we entertain guests as a family."Returning her attention to the last preparations in the kitchen, Judy still eyed the door, waiting for Lyric to arrive.

Lyric arrived at the door to Judy's quarters and like usual, she always carried the act of knocking. She never entered a place unless invited. Lyric was dressed in a casual light green shirt and dark blue jeans. Her sneakers were grey and blue. Her hair was tied up in a high ponytail. She was on time, hopefully. It was 1900 hours now.
Lyric wasn't sure if they were going to continue on with the Tholian dicussion and she waited patiently.

With her glasses, dress, and apron, she struck a very matronly image. She opened the door. "Good evening, my dear," she greeted. "Allow me to introduce you to my lovely husband Max, and my daughter Anna..."Judy saw two furballs charging their way. "And our family corgis, Bridge and Tunnel. Mishpocheh, this is Ensign Lyric Sinclair. She has some interesting ideas about our geopolitical position."Judy's use of the Yiddish term "mishpocheh" to address her family was a sign of her Jewishness, as was the presence of a mezuzah at the doorway. "Hi," Anna acknowledged, looking up from her schoolwork. She looked, as she always did, very much like a younger version of Judy. "Pleased to meet you," Max greeted from the kitchen.

"Hi," Anna acknowledged, looking up from her schoolwork. She looked, as she always did, very much like a younger version of Judy. "Pleased to meet you," Max greeted from the kitchen. [ Lyric S- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] "Evening." She answered once she opened the door and she could see that Judy was dressed in a dress and apron. She also wore glasses. " Pleased to meet you." She added to Max and her daughter Anna. Then two furballs came charging their way. Lyric didn't mind the two corgi's coming over to sniff her scent. She allowed the two furballs- Bridge and Tunnel to sniff her hands. "Aw. Such cute names for two adorable corgi's." She wasn't afraid of dogs, thankfully. Especially corgi's. She wondered what Mishpocheh meant and decided to look it up on the database. After all, she did have interesting ideas about their geopolitical position. She also had some theories regarding the Tholians. "I have some theories." She admitted. "About our neighbors and the Tholians." "Hello," Lyric greeted Anna. She also noticed that Anna was a spitting image of a younger Judy. "Pleased to meet you as well." She thought about her title and full name. "I was thinking. If we're not on duty, should we use titles? Like Ensign? Commander?" Her instructors were formal. Formalities were always a norm around the Academy.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams. & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy heard the knock and headed towards the door. "I don't care for formality at home.""Part of the agreement Judy and I had when we moved in together was that she keeps her work outside the home. She doesn't really, but she tries," Max added, playfully teasing his beloved wife of so many years. "In all seriousness, I think it's a better vibe for us all that at home we're a family, and only a family. It's better for the kids that at home, mom is mom and dad is dad. Besides, the uniform is so unflattering and bulky," Judy added. "Mini-me, a little help setting the table?""Yes, Commander," Anna answered, deliberately contrarian. "It took me so many tries to get a daughter, and I ended up with a clone," Judy told Lyric, humorously. "Dairy plates, Anna. We're having salmon. Lyric, I hope you like salmon."

I couldn't imagine calling everyone by their ranks in a non-formal setting." She gave a small smile as she listened about the agreement. "I tend to leave work at the door of my own quarters, too. But I sometimes spend time reading files." She was an avid reader. "Half of those files are classic works. And I don't disagree with you."
The uniform can be boring and bulky. "We could always add some adornments to our uniforms to make them much less unflattering." She announced in a playful manner. "Add colors to the Starfleet emblem."
Lyric looked between her and her daughter. "She is a definite mini-you." She chuckled. "I do and it's going to be weird...I eat it with tarter sauce or strawberry mango English Cucumber relish."

Max, meanwhile, transferred a salmon from the oven onto a serving plate. "It's the whole of the uniform. The dark colors, the awkward silhouette, the red collar. Being blonde and as pale as we are, Anna and myself, red isn't our color," she complained about the uniform. "It's still better than the jumpsuits we had when I joined the fleet, back in the 50s and 60s - peeing in those was a serious pain in the tuchus.""Don't let Judy's complaining get to you," Max assured Lyric. "I've learned that if she isn't complaining about anything, it's a sign that something's wrong."Having spent the past two decades at Judy's side, Max knew her better than anyone, and the affectionate way he spoke about her, even looked at her, showed how much he valued that. "In any case, I'd be interested in trying your serving suggestion someday. We've tried salmon in mango curry in the past, so that's not too far," he added. "We're a family with broad horizons where food is concerned.""Dad writes cookbooks, and he tests the recipes on us," Anna shared. "Sometimes, I even help him cook."The dogs made their way to the kitchen to bother Max, who steadfastly refused to give them salmon, or the fettuccine Alfredo that he brought over next.

You won't believe what I saw in the Museum. All the uniforms they ever had plus the old days when they had some kind of astronaut gear that looked so heavy, bulky, white, and had a patches on the side. Or badges." She looked over to Max, " No. I won't. A squeaky wheel always gets the most attention." She'd happily share the recipe. "I'll share the recipe with you. I'd have to get in touch with my Mom. She has the recipe in an old fashioned recipe box. I'll be happy to contribute to your next cookbook." Lyric was also talking in regards to cookbooks and acknowledging Anna as well. She watched the dogs walk into the kitchen to beg for food. "You have an audience, Mr Williams."

"No food. None for you. No."The dogs continued to beg. "Well, technically, they used to feast with us. We got them a few months after the War, when Anna was 9 years old, and she fed them prodigious amounts of food, vegetables most of all," Judy recalled. "If she hadn't, she might've passed me in height by now.""Mom, I'm not the only one who ever fed the dogs and you know it," Anna protested, as they took their seats at the table. The entire family sat down on one side, with Anna in the middle between her two loving, doting parents. "Now, allow us to introduce the recipes. We have salmon, oven-baked, with rosemary and garlic on a bed of spinach, in my family tradition. We have pasta alfredo, with homemade sauce. We have salad, with dressing optional. My personal favorite is the cheese platter: reblochon, camembert, roquefort, comte, and if you don't like the strong French cheese, mozzarella," Judy presented the meal she and her man had prepared.
