[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]Judy raised an eyebrow. "It's funny you should mention his cheating on the Kobayashi Maru, since I actually think that's one of the negative marks on his record," she observed. "James Kirk was very brave, and very accomplished, and no one can ever take that away from him, but I think the decision to cheat represents a certain mindset. It's the kind of approach of someone who thinks the rules don't apply to them, and they don't have to follow procedures and rules. Like a certain child."She eyed Anna. "I follow all the rules, mom," the young woman protested. "Ehh," Judy dismissed. "My other thought on him is that he was a brave captain, he was, but so was all of the Enterprise crew. One of the things you learn, especially when you serve in tricky situations like the War, is that the ones carrying out the orders, the men and women of the lower ranks, are at least as heroic as the Captains and Commanders who issue the orders. It's usually not those of us like me, sitting on our chairs on the Bridge, who are killed or wounded in action."Judy had been wounded in action. She'd shattered her right hip in a fall during the Dominion War, and she had a Purple Heart medal on display (alongside her other medals). However, she'd lost crewmen under her during her service as First Officer in wartime. The respect for the common soldier, as opposed to idol worship of senior officers, was an emotionally significant issue to her. [ Lyric- First Officer's Quarters, Deck Three, Front Ear Station] " James Kirk was also known to be a dare devil too." She pointed out as she recalled reading how he got into trouble with the law once when he was a kid. "He didn't want to look or come out as a failure." Lyric amended. "If I studied for a test all night long and that morning, I took the test. I was feeling accomplished and positive. That is until I got the test results and found I had failed it. Everyone else passed the test but me. I'd feel like a failure despite all the studying I did." Lyric explained her logic. It may not be sound, but it she felt it was. "Kirk possibly didn't want to fail that test and all he thought was succeeding and achieving what he set out to do on the Kobayashi Maru." She turned to look at Anna as she protested. "However, the captain is actually responsible for the actions of the crew." She pointed out another tidbit of lessons. "If the crew didn't follow the captains' orders, I think they would be chewed out or reprimanded, or given a court marital. I think Kirk had many of them. But he continued to represent the Federation."
Lyric took a sip of water from her glass. "All these rules and procedures are also meant not only to protect us, but if something causes a captain to break them, it's for a good reason." [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), Max Williams & Anna Eastman Williams - First Officer's quarters, Deck 3, Front Ear Station]"Personally, I can't condone it. My life experience has been that without integrity, honesty, and other good morals, we are nothing," Judy said by way of disagreement. "My faith does too. The old Jewish sages wrote that 'Derech Eretz kadma la-Torah', proper behavior precedes the Torah. That is to say, since the Torah is the most important thing, and proper behavior precedes it, then it follows that proper behavior is the absolute, first, most important quality, the foundation without which nothing can be had. Someone like Kirk, who lacked Derech Eretz, isn't as valued as someone like Jean-Luc Picard, the current Captain of the Enterprise, God love him, who does."Judy had had occasion to hear Jean-Luc Picard speak, and she liked what she heard. However, then, she was hit by a realization. "Oh, sh...," she started, and then cut herself off. "Gosh darn it! Anna has her eye exam today, about right now. I completely forgot. Darn it!"She looked apologetically at Lyric. "My dear, I'm very sorry, but we'll have to cut this short. Unfortunately, the memory does start to go at this age," she said, trying to maintain her composure. She had forgotten, but she was going to get all the pieces in place in an orderly manner. "Anna, go get ready."

There was some good that Kirk did and some items were questionable. There was always forgiveness. She let her continue to talk as Lyric decided not to pursue. Then she quipped, "I guess First Officer Spock didn't have any good behavior. Though, he was a Vulcan and human."
Lyric hadn't had the occasion to listen to Jean-Luc-Picard. He was a decorated captain---Her musings were cut off. An appointment at an eye exam? It was almost like she had to cut her dinner time short. She was considering herself lucky had she taken seconds. "Oh. That's ok." She said, wiping her mouth on her napkin and setting it down next to her plate. "I should be heading to my quarters myself." The conversation about Picard would have to wait.

Her impression of him was quite different than of Kirk. She saw Spock as one who respected the rules and the society around him, but that broke them when there was a real moral imperative to do so. Kirk, at least in his younger days, she saw as much more self-serving. However, she wasn't going to debate that, because there was no time. "I'm very sorry about this all. It was good of you to come," she assured. "Best of luck with your scientific endeavors."After Lyric left, Judy and Max cleared the table, while Anna went to remove her contact lenses in favor of glasses. The trio then left as well, headed for the teen's eye exam. FIN

Lyric didn't want them late for the eye appointment. Maybe one day, she could talk about Picard and Spock on another occasion. The end.
